Such a classic design! I love the "record grooves" too. I am good with the date, and the double 15. I've got no complaints, and also like that it comes in a 42mm for those with bigger wrists. It's a great first Swiss automatic watch for people, in my opinion.

Thanks for the review! I finally pulled the trigger and purchased this one. It’s been on my list for a long time and I’m glad I held out as now it has a 100 m water resistance where as the former model did not. I see some reviews that says the loom is better as well which is a major drawback and some thing that has made me put off getting this one. Here’s to hoping! I have the Sorbo 17 alpinist and now I will have this. I think I’m good on field watches! Now back to buying 3 drivers a month! P.S. I do not mind the 15 being pushed in a bit…

I just bought it, i definitely prefer the thickness as is, even used as a tool watch.
I got mine about a month ago. I find it hard to take it off and give my other watches some use. Not that I have many, but I could do just with my Hamilton. Leather strap for me, though. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I'm on mobile so I can't search to see if anyone already posted this, but any aftermarket bracelet that fits the Seiko Alpinist will fit this watch, so you do have more options.

If you have the watch on a strap instead of a bracelet, you definitely benefit from sapphire on the back, since the watch will be resting on a flat potentially scratchy surface often.
Just ordered the Hamilton khaki field. Thanks for the info! I’m a musician and my band just made our second vinyl album. The grooves on this watch look like grooves on a vinyl album and I didn’t notice this til after I ordered the watch. Think it’s a sign?
Having a "Date" is a MUST for Me. I just won't consider buying a Watch without a Date Complication. As for Hamilton's, I cat wear (most) of Them because of the Long LUGS.

i find the dial/crytsal too reflective. they need more AR coating. that's it's only weakness. i also saw a mod with cathedral hour hand which brought it to the next level.

I have a 7” wrist and I can’t pick between the 38 and 42!!! The 38 is classic and wears larger, but I’m intimidated by smaller watches. I also don’t like 15 on the 42.
38 for sure. It took me a while to go down to smaller watches. But now I enjoy 36mm on my 6.5inch wrist. And when I wear a 38mm I can't believe how HUGE it looks on me. You have to have that "AH-HA Moment" may take awhile

Got this last month, just not click on me, this watch looks beautiful on pic's and videos but the lug to lug and reflect sapphire is not enjoyable returned after one week, got seiko srpe53k1 instead waiting to arrive!

I just purchased this watch. I wear it on a brown nato strap. I do not understand why they would make anything on this "field" watch high polish. Just makes me anal when I wear it in the field. Great watch overall I love the weight and the sleek case.

@@ChaPPie01 Just pick up a sapphire crystal with AR from Crystal Times. CT98 is the item number. That’s what I did and it made a big difference in the overall dial clarity.
This is my first serious watch. But it got out of the rotation for over 2 years.
Recently went on a 3 day solo travel and decided to take it with me for old time’s sake.
Wow, I now remember why I fell in love with this one. Classic american design language, versatile, wears so great on my 6.5 inch wrist, 80 hours reserve, 100m WR, comfy bracelet.
The hamilton khaki auto should be in everyone’s collection.
It is not perfect, but you will always find a fault even if you got a million dollar watch. So get it!
Love the centre links of the bracelet split into 2 pieces. It makes it look different than every other watch bracelet out there. This watch is a superb value. Excellent bracelet, great case, great movement and decent lume. Plan to get one down the road to replace my Seiko SNK field watch.
Mine replace my SNK. Very pleased with the upgrade!

The 38mm is the perfect field watch and is much more desirable than the 42mm. The 42mm wears more like a pilots watch but can still work if you like looking at a larger dial. Another great review FallingTitan!!!!
It’s interesting though. I went and tried both sizes and although my other three watches are all 42 mm and fits spot on, this watch looked weird on my 7 1/2 inch wrist with that size. Now I’m a tall guy and normally wouldn’t go below 40 but this 38 mm version is very elegant looking and can even be passed as dressy.
I tried on the 42mm today, and it felt big because of the lug to lug length.

Ok, I've only had mine for two days now, I got the 40mm version in blue, but so far the accuracy has been insane. I set it against my iPhone clock and it hasn't lost or gained a single second. I'm well impressed. I really like the watch. It's robust and solid, looks good and sits very comfortably on my seven inch wrist. Two areas for improvement might be a screw down crown for extra water security and some anti reflective coating. I don't think it has any. But man, if this new watch maintains this level of accuracy I'll be a very happy Hamilton fan. Good review-I like your friendly style. 👍
Agree, also on your points of improvement. I took care of the crystal myself (had a watchmaker replace it with another crystal I found online). Screw-down crown would be good but I'm not sure how easy this would be to mod.
Give it AR coating underside and this would be the ultimate GADA watch, hands down.
I have the 42mm version on the oem leather strap. The 15 next to the date is unnecessary, but that’s the only fault I can find. This one probably gets more wear than my Planet Ocean or my Rolex. I’ve got a 42mm Longines Spirit on order as I love the simplicity of this and the Longines.
Just won a bid on mine can’t wait to wear it .... I’ve had many Hamilton’s over the years and every one has been spectacular and I’ve sold every one for a profit - they hold or increase in value 👍
I have one of these on a leather strap and it has served me well for several years. Looks great, easy to read, can wear almost anywhere. Great field watch.

The double 15 is a bit redundant but in terms of design consistency I think it works better than only deciding to choose 1

blue dial if I remember correctly seem a little dull to me. I'm a fan of the white/silver dial version of this watch.

They kept the 15 next to the date for visual balance. Otherwise we’d have a big black area on the right without a counterpart on the left.
Nice review of a great watch. I used mine as an every day GADA and it excelled better than any other model I've ever tried that with. I liked the bracelet but agree it looks amazing on pretty much any strap (I had it on a dressy croc as well as a Zulu and both were perfect matches).
One question - does it in fact now have AR coating? Every Hamilton field watch I've seen lacks AR which is a shame as the dials are beautiful with excellent legibility, which is compromised imo by the lack of AR coatings.
They started to put AR coating recently but it's still very reflective because of the double dome.
Have this watch myself, great piece, tho I agree with you on the bracelet. Not a fan of that line!

Nice watch...I prefer the quartz...accurate, cheap, tough and robust. you dont care about the movement if it fall or exposed to magnetic field or hard shocks.
This and the longines conquest 39mm are my favourite field/everyday watch. Maybe you can do a review of the longines conquest 39mm?

Are you seeing AR coating? I loved this watch except for the insane glare. I had to return it.
Yes that's why I took long swinging it back and forth. They say it has it. But it's weak. And double dome makes it worse.
I had the crystal replaced with an AR-coated one (underside only). It still has some glare (and it should, in my opinion) but more manageable.
Choose the Hamilton 42 version every time guys. It's subjective I know, but the quality and accuracy for the money is outstanding and on my average 7inch wrist the 38 seems a bit too small. My go-to everyday watch when not wearing my Rolex Sub 16610 or Omega Seamaster 300.
All your criticisms are very valid, especially taking out the 15. It's a detail that didn't bother me about my watch until you mentioned it, but it is what it is. I've had it for a while now no regrets.

I didn't like how it looked on my wrist with a leather strap and was never fully happy with all the aftermarket and oem bracelets. so in a way the braclet was a deal breaker for me. some watches I love on straps but not the alpy.
i currently have the spb117 in for review and its tempting. wish the clasp was more flush tho and more micro adjusts.
Escapement & Watch thanks for going deeper into your reasons. I actually think the oem oyster that’s on the 117 you mentioned is really nice. I know some have mentioned the clasp being flush but it’s certainly not a deal breaker for me. I like the fact that the taper isn’t very big and I do think the alpinist works well on a number of straps. But it depends on the dial colour you choose. The 117 or the newly released 201 look like they’d be easy to pair with various straps. Look forward to your review of the 117, certainly stands out with the different indices. Thanks 🙏

Yes I just serviced my Hamilton which is new because the mainspring screw broke. It was my fault but I found out that they don't even service it. They just send the movement back to Switzerland and throw in a new one for you.
Just purchased my 38mm to mark my Covid vaccination. Agree the line down the middle of the bracelet was a turn off. Went w/strap but replaced standard with Hamilton quick release olive green leather. Killer.
