Rosered Homestead said that meat will only absorb whatever water they need so you can just pour off the extra. Thanks for sharing!!! I'm a newbie at freeze drying & love watching your videos.
I ALWAYS weigh the product before and after freeze drying to KNOW exactly how much water is needed for reconstitution. I love watching all of your videos....they always lead to me trying something new or making a few modifications to other things with added heat....(sriracha)
I get good deals at H.E.B. for 1/3lb 80/20 FRESH burger patties for $1 each....I freeze dry them because you can always crumble them up and use them for other things... Burger patties are the way to go for freeze drying....in my opinion
What a great idea to pull out an "old" packet of food to check out, even though you're dealing with crazy weather. That meat looks darn good, like it could even be made into a burger if you added in a little oil or fat. 🍔 But you can't go wrong with a Manwich, lol. 😋 In 2019, I had absolutely no idea that home freeze drying was even a possibility. I truly appreciate your adventurous pioneer spirit, sharing what you've learned along the way. Maybe you were winging it back then, but you've blazed a wonderful trail ever since, with lots of delicious recipes. 👏😄 I'm truly sorry you're dealing with stormy weather and possible power outages. Wish we could take some of that snow and moisture off your hands... it's pretty darn dry in my part of New Mexico, big snow in late October and not much since. At any rate, BE SAFE, stay warm and thank you for another terrific video! 😁👍
Thank you, I'll do my best to send any snow your way. We all survived the ice storm here with no power outages which I was worried about especially with the near zero temperatures we had. Too dad gum cold for Missouri!
Thanks, John!!! I have done a lot of cooked ground beef, but have been skeptical about doing raw meat. I will have to do some now. I hope you didn't get too much bad weather!
A sandwich is a sandwich but a manwitch is a meal. FYI you can over hydrate any meat and just drain the excess. It will only absorb what it needs. Good stuff, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this video. It really got my brain going. 🤯 What do you think of making a meatloaf with the rehydrated meat? It looked like it stuck together pretty good. That would be awesome.
i think i have mostly done cooked meat , with your video, I've seen several that have done raw meat. school reports is one. so that being said, your hamburger video made me think, i believe my next load I'll throw some in. I live in NC and we got snow today . less than 2 inches but everything is just about frozen solid. Hubby closed the shop down early and came home and said all the roads were slick. so stay warm and keep on sending us those great videos.
I hope you are getting through the winter storm. We had it here in Oklahoma yesterday. I think we ended up with around 4 inches of snow. Luckily no ice.
You can freeze it under a vaccum like you did the steak, and it absorbs the liquid quickly. I do quite a bit of raw ground beef. Thank you for sharing.
If you had someone who you were trying to convince to buy a freeze dryer, what would be the one rehydrated entree that you would serve them? Also, for bonus points, what would be the one fun / snack item that you would serve them?
I would probably never try to convince someone to do anything they didn't want to do but if I were that way inclined I would freeze dry something that they really liked
Thanks, John for your videos. I think your way of adding just the right amount of water would save nutritional value of the food, rather than pouring access water off. Not sure, I'm not a scientist. Question for you? Do you think the meat would hold together to make a patty for the grill? Thanks.
I watched one of your videos where you spoke about liking the mTorrs to be around 250. I have an older model where the mTorrs drop below minus 100 at times. Food does well so far. Would you have any idea about this reading?
Makes me want to freeze dry some raw hamburger. Great idea to put pre freeze dried weight on the bag. I do weigh my bags in grams after packaging. I weigh again before opening to make sure no moisture entered the bag.
Florida here! About the only times I don’t run my freeze dryer is when a hurricane may cause a power outage! I hope you fare well through your inclement weather! ❤
I heard you all had a cold snap down to the 60's or something. I miss Florida I was stationed at Homestead AFB and just missed Andrew by about 2 weeks.
@ we’ve dipped below freezing! We’re in Jacksonville. I keep telling hubby, “I’m moving to Florida, I hear it’s warm there”, LOL! Come back to FL! Missouri sounds icky! 😉
Have you ever tried using an oxygen absorber in a tightly sealed package to extend the freshness of something like a steak that hasn’t been frozen or freeze dried?
I have not but I googled "can you use an O2 absorber with raw food" and got this result: "While you can technically use an O2 absorber with some raw food, it's generally not recommended for most fresh, raw ingredients due to the potential for bacterial growth even in a low-oxygen environment; it's primarily designed for preserving dried or properly prepared dehydrated foods where oxygen is the main spoilage factor. " So I would not do it.
Oh very cool! That is so exciting! I don’t have but probably 100 items in my art bag since I’m still brand new, less than a year in freeze drying but I’m going to start eating up some of the very first things just to be sure that I’m either doing OK or could do better or where I needed to improve or if everything looks great! Yes, we got our snow today! And it is still snowing. Beautiful. Quiet and peaceful. But stay warm!
I cook first only because that means I'm taking out even more fat, not to mention that I don't have to cook it later. No judgement, just the way I do it.
As a connoisseur of my channel many will know that I pre cook over 99 percent of my FD stuff simply for the quick rehydration in an emergency situation.
Five and a half year old ground beef sounds incredibly disgusting to those who have not grasped the concept of freeze dried. I can’t get my daughter to eat it 🙄

Ty for this science experiment! I've freeze dried cooked but never raw. Brilliant!
Thanks, I am sure I am not the first to try this. I am always looking for new ideas.
Hi John! I have freeze dried my meat raw and cooked. I think you make freeze drying fun. I did purchase your dessert book!! Stay warm!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words!
I purchased his books also! Thanks for helping fund John's adventures. I love his videos.

Another stellar video - thanks John!

Enjoyed your video. I’m still trying catch up watching all the older ones. Stay safe. It’s icy here in Georgia also!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video. It really got my brain going. 🤯 What do you think of making a meatloaf with the rehydrated meat? It looked like it stuck together pretty good. That would be awesome.
I think it would work very well!
Look delicious, John. Stay safe!

I have no doubt on your hobby. Thanks for sharing.

I hope you are getting through the winter storm. We had it here in Oklahoma yesterday. I think we ended up with around 4 inches of snow. Luckily no ice.
Our storm was over the weekend, we got about 12 inches with about a quarter inch ice first. I didn't loose power though, Thank God.
@ oh that’s right. Did you get any of this second storm?
We were just on the southern edge of that weekend storm. There were power outages and it was cold.
We got about an inch or so but that pretty much melted today
Very cold it was LOL
You can freeze it under a vaccum like you did the steak, and it absorbs the liquid quickly. I do quite a bit of raw ground beef. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds great!
I have about 5 inches of snow in Southeast Mo.
We got hit pretty bad here in the Kansas City area with the first storm, we only got about an inch last night
@@JohnInBibs We were lucky, the ice missed us.
Congratulations, John. Five and half years ago ground beef was about $2.50/lb. Today, about $4/lb. You just realized about a 60% return on investment.
Fantastic, I like the way you think!

This seemed to hold together very well when I was rehydrating it.
stay safe and warm my friend
Thank You

I understand, some people are turned off by the concept of freeze dried food.
I see everyone say to cook it first I guess they full of bolone
Or cooked ground beef, LOL
