Orson Welles and Elizabeth Taylor compassionately narrate this harrowing documentary about Jewish persecution in Nazi Germany, which soon turned into a notoriously industrious plan to wipe them from existence.

Yep Wiemar Germany was by many measures more cultured, more educated, more "liberal" than the US at the time. It was the place to go if you were an artist, a philosopher, etc. As for the US, well .... the luckiest of us will be able to leave.

Very hard to watch as a German. These events were not taught when I went to school in Germany in the 60's and 70's. Only after the show "Holocaust" aired did the German public finally start talking about it. I did not know this documentary existed but I knew about the Genocide. I'm glad to know that I had no relatives that were in uniform or participated in any of these atrocities.

Eastern Europeans were enthusiastic participants too. If you read about the recent genocide in Rwanda (in 1994) or the triple genocide (of Armenians, Greeks, and Syrians - all Christians) in the former Ottoman Empire, the same thing happened: people murdered their neighbours and sometimes family menbers (as there were intermarriages). In Rwanda, Tutsis, including women and children, and the elderly, were rounded up in a church, then slaughtered... by people who attended mass with them at that same side.
If you have the stomach for it, read Kurzio Malaparte's memoir of WW2, Kaputt. He visited the ghetto in Krakow and was an eyewitness of a pogrom in Iasi, in Romania, where the Jews were murdered by policemen and soldiers in uniform.

That TV series holocaust was really good. It is hard to believe that this actually happened and the people who survived are probably the strongest people ever. When it comes to history you learn from the bad and never repeat it, grow and focus on the good. I am an American and we do not have a good history as well but I hope we can all learn from it and build a better future for everyone and understand we have differences but can get along

It's easy to just blame Germans and move on with life, but that hasn't made a difference as we saw future genocides happen. We have to figure out why it happened and stop it long before concentration camps are built. Humans have a long way to go before we can live in peace. Politics needs to be moderated when allow extremism to grow like we have in the US we could end up with a Hitler as President.

What about the amount of Palestinians being killed by Israel every day now? Does that not qualify as genocide? When other countries are calling 4 the international court in the Hague 2 hold them accountable 4 their disgraceful actions?

The sad fact is the words "never forget" are meaningless since the 1950s persecution of minorities still happen,
Or are we saying unless the numbers of those being persecuted isn't in the millions then it's o.k to obliterate minorities
We all know that 6 million Jewish people perished at the hand of Germany throughout the 30's and 40's
But little is said about the 4 million other minority groups that suffered the same fate as the Jews, minorities like the mental ill, Roma, Sinti and Slavic people, homosexuals,
as well as political opposition parties.
The fact is percentage wise all these minorities suffered as much as each other.
But numbers wise the Jewish community heads the list of those murderer
History needs to acknowledge all off the atrocities committed by Germany in the 1930s and 40s, not just those committed against the jewish people

I met a survivor of Auschwitz in the summer of 1994.
I was sharing a noon meal with a female acquaintance at an indoor food court.
An older gentleman walked by our table.
The acquaintance knew him, stopped him for a chat.
After about a minute, he crossed his arms at his waist.
When he saw my eyes widen at the tattoo on his outer left forearm, he angled his body so i could get a better look (i think he was surprised that a ‘twentysomething’ knew what the tattoo meant.
      Me, ‘Which camp?’
      He, ‘Auschwitz’
Me, ‘how many in your family were murdered?’
      He, ‘74.’
He didn’t want to accept my condolences, but the acquaintance knew me well enough to say, ‘she means it.’

I've watched this beautiful little gem several times. I cannot seem to see it enough!! It makes me think of how life must've been for my Grandmother and extended family. My family are Jews from Kiev. How wonderful it must have been to have the simple beauty that being a Jew during this time affords us! Blessed memory be all those who suffered the indignities and horrors, and died with pain, suffering and yes, honor!! To my own Grandmother: thank You for being who you were, and being strong enough to live through it and I'm alive because of your strength and humility. Love You, Babushka!❤

Glad you’re grandmother lived through it but it was more luck than being strong. It was confirmed that an SS shot my great grandfather in the back of the head without him ever knowing what hit him. I was told he was very strong willed and that’s why it happened. Something like that could have easily happened to your grandmother. Whoever survived the Holocaust is more lucky than anything. So many strong people who were totally helpless at the time died at the hands of the Nazis. 99% luck.

Are you still a believer Steve? Do you believe that a just and loving god could just sit back and allow this to happen on the pretext of not interfering with the free will of the murderers to kill the innocents? What about the will of the innocents... to live? Either god is a monster, or he does not exist. The most likely explanation in the face of such evil is - that he does not exist. This is my firm conviction and so should it be yours, for no god worthy of your worship would allow this to happen.

At what point should this God have gotten involved? Hitler’s parents? Before 1900 years of The Church teaching deicide? How far back? Or in the other direction, the Nazis lost the war, so maybe God just got involved too late for your tastes. Your question is valid, but I would like it to more dimensionalized.

@@GD-rd6ig My view is that there's no need to over-complicate things. If we presuppose the judeo-christian god exists, such a god - supposedly omnipotent and omniscient - who could have foreseen and prevented evil of this magnitude yet didn't, and who do this day champions the free will of evildoer to perpetrate evil at the expense of the innocent, is simply not worthy of worship. If we discard the presuppositionalism, the most likely explanation is that god doesn't exist and this evil (and all other evil ever committed) is simply the result of man's brutality to his fellow man. That to me seems like the most logical and straightforward explanation.

There were Nazi supporters in British India rss. But what is perplexing is having been victims of such sufferings the present day Jewish State is not magnanimous enough to find peace with fellow Palestinians and share just living space with them. Intolerance, bigotry and discrimination begets it in return in full measure with no one left to live in peace.

For all the horrors of this just remember that there is hardly any country on earth that has not had genocide as a part of its history. None of us can claim total innocence even though many of us have not participated in genocide in our lifetimes. In Australia the claim is that we have BENEFITED from genocide and that makes us complicit. Other countries can face the same accusation. The USA was inhabited when the pilgrims arrived and before long those inhabitants were being destroyed to make the lands available for white settlement. Unfortunately there is only so much in the world and for one race to thrive another race must be eliminated. That is the sad reality of the world and its history.

The history of humanity is brutal but truth is essential. We can’t build a positive future by denying & hiding the crimes of the past. Humanity has had amazing teachers/philosophers & technical advances. We don’t have to watch our societies declining back to the Dark Ages of cruelty, ignorance & anti-science. We don’t have to share the same religion to honor human equality & live by the same civil justice system.

This documentary flat takes my breath away. To think that the USA had immigrant openings for 400,000 and we turned away boat after boat of fleeing Jews; women and children seeking freedom and life escaping Hitler and his Nazi beasts! That’s embarrassing and saddening. How could the USA do this.
This documentary is overwhelming at times; hard to listen to, shocking, nauseating. How could people be so stupid and bestial; following men like Hitler, Goebbels, Eichmann, and legions of men that had lost all contact with God. It could surely happen again! The Free World must stand with all peoples protecting them from evil; in the USA we must never go hide again.

These documentaries never focus on the three waves of immigration of the Jews, just one. I get it. First, the perpetrators who believed they lured their pry by way of putting a carat in front of them not only did they succeed but also they themselves were the biggest pry and were caught up in a Genocide. When asked what happened? In return, declare a declaration of faith-that became Jewish.

A great documentary important to show that this happened and could happen again. it's a shame that in 1933 a sort of 'Jewish Militia' or even Union of Jewish people couldn't be created to take on the Nazis. Men of fighting age 17-45 should have done some sort of special army training especially after 1933 all those strong, able bodied men being marched to there deaths or forced to work to death when they could have at least fought back in some sort of militia.

There were groups like that, many Jews fought in the Resistance also. In the mid-20th-century there had been genocides, for instance the Armenian genocide, the Americans' genocide against the First Nations people, and of course the slow burn of American chattel slavery. But to nice, middle-class people in Europe, educated, and while by no means not all wealthy, all with a mindset that esteemed education, hard and honest work, social order, etc. it just did not seem possible that it could happen there, where they were. Hence, Jewish militia type groups were seen as extreme. Since then we've seen not only the Holocaust but the Pol Pot regime and other genocides large and small, and we know it can happen, anywhere. Militia-type groups are not a bad idea, not a bad one at all.

If you insert Israel into Isaiah 53, then the interpretation Has to be that when Israel is beaten and stricken and spat upon that it will not open its mouth but suffer for the good of the nations. That is a perverted interpretation of Isaiah 53.
Jesus’ appearance in Israel in the first century is a historical fact, as is his trial, death, and resurrection. The holocaust is a historical fact. The modern day teaching of rabbis like Tovia Singer, calling Israel, the suffering servant in Isaiah, 53 is in historical fact.
