This year's Variety series of actors on actors/directors on directors has been THE best pairings. I've loved every single pairing in a way that has never happened in prior years/seasons.
Its so cute, how Jon came prepped. So humble and respectful. He will make it very far in Hollywood. Wicked is already such historical milestone for him. 👏👏👏
this is hands down the BEEEEST directors on directors conversation of 2024!!! SOOOO insightful and with ACTUAL TIPS for aspiring directors and even producers!!!!
I love these _____ on _____ interviews because it’s really just two film nerds talking about their passion projects and being blown away by each other lol
I didn't want them to stop. So insightful and I love the fact that they both knew about each other's film so well that they were connecting similarities with WICKED and DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE.
I had lowered expectations for Wicked the movie, because I loved the musical theatre version and wasn't sure how it would translate onscreen, but Jon Chu exceeded my expectations. The casting was great and everyone brought their A-game. I can't wait for Wicked For Good! I really hope Jon Chu gets nominated for Best Director, because he deserves it.
I actually had my expectations on a moderate level. But they were exceeded as well. I thought the extended run time was going to be a bit of dent in telling this beautiful, complex and timely story
@@amadeusmalonje6948 It was honestly not my favorite show cos it was weird but I enjoyed seeing Robert Ri'chard in HOUSE OF WAX. I'd endure watching CS cos there were no more "kiddie shows" at night, lol. 😆
As a budding director, this was such an insightful, inspiring, instructive interview. Excellent pairing and I LOVE the convo and how they addressed who they thought might be watching -- it felt like they were directly (pun slightly intended) giving ME and my peers advice. I loved it! Saving and returning to this video. Thank you.
We could use a little bit more that right now in these crazy times we’ve been living in right now. That’s why I seek out stories that have a bit of resonance in them.
There are far better directors that actually gives us joy, music and comedy that didn't get much recognition nor their millions and millions of Amazon/Disney money, you gonna talk about them?
@@ryanlts_9684 Yeah, but the impact that these 2 directors made this year was just unexpected really. Wicked, especially, was under a lot of pressure to live up to its legacy. They exceeded everyone's expectations. Jon Chu made one of the best movies of the year, so I'm glad he was invited to do this segment.
Cousin Skeeter was one of the few American shows we had here in Holland growing up, it had my favorite theme song at the time. Had no idea Shawn was connected to that show, crazy. This was a great conversation, I loved each of the movies these guys made this year and it's so nice to see that from the top down the success of each movie wasn't accidental, it was clearly the result of incredibly talented and dedicated people who really care for what they're doing.
Such a great pairing! Deadpool and Wolverine and Wicked have a lot in common as buddy movies with two characters who start out as enemies and end as friends.
When Jon M Chu holds the camera very low on Galinda when she becomes ~~~~~Glinda~~~~~, it's an angle that is so different than any other part of the movie, it's art.
We all know Shawn from Stranger Things and Deadpool 3, but This Is Where I Leave You, so underrated, please watch it, so f--ng good and Wicked is an instant musical classic, Jon M Chu, best director this year!!
I worship Lin as a millennial theatre kid. But there is no way you can top the proshot. Especially with Lin and his castmates. These amazing people that turned American history into an unlikely theatrical sensation.
sad it cut so fast at the end i felt like theres so much more, loved seeing both of them get nerdy about films they made and what cinema means to them, i also loved that both of them really taking in on the movie they watch and discussed the tiny detail from the films and not just a known point from the film
I, too, feel that having a person of color playing Elphaba made the themes of the show so much deeper, so personal and poignant. I cry every time I hear both Ari's and Cynthia's voices in this movie, and I cannot WAIT to see how Part Two unfolds. Plus the tiny tonal changes they brought to each of the famous songs just makes me so happy...like when Elphaba sings "I'm Not That Girl"...in the stage show, I always felt she resented Galinda, but in the movie, I feel she was just happy that her friends were happy, but she's sad, because she can't feel that.
Every one wants to make a block buster movie.really You want to produce a film that generation upon generations not only talk about it but always want to rewatch it sparks an a emotion connection within you that you forgot about. Even if it’s one line that triggers those feelings. This interview was Very I slight full
@@manuelorozco7760 the industry don’t make “wholesome”‘movies anymore They don’t want unity amongst people They want audiences to fight which fictional characters are better or which animated movies are to sell the most figurines and other products they’re selling within in the movie. It’s all about money making not making memorable lasting movies.
18:47 that's honestly really good advice because that takes a little bit of pressure off of the director; and to focus on the actors. There are some movies where the director trust members of their crew (the Director of Photography, the editor, the stunt team, and the VFX) if they themselves had started in one of those positions. Then there are directors who obviously didn't trust someone on their team because they think "oh I shot one movie with vfx, or I used to do this person's job so I know what I'm doing.". I say that as someone who's seen plenty of bad films where the director has no idea what they're doing at all.
I'm a 90s kid Millennial, so that "Alex Mack" reference got me like 😮😀😃 I even had an A.M. middle-grade book I got from like, the Scholastic book fair or something. I also watched "Cousin Skeeter" (but I'm black, so maybe that's why? lol).
I loved this, but I did get annoyed a few times by how often Shawn interrupted Jon - it was usually to give him a lovely compliment but I kept wanting to hear where Jon was going to take his point!
I also love these Variety interviews whether it's actors, writers, directors, doesn't matter, they're all great. However the amount of interrupting that takes place is extraordinarily disrupting, curious if anyone else finds this distracting? There was a different interview recently where I could not follow the interview because of the talking over each other that was happening. I had to turn it off. I get that these people are not professional interviewers though what happened to actually listening to one another? When a person has asked a question could they wait until the other person is completely finished answering instead of answering the question for them OR asking another question??
I could never say that i was a director when working on set in G&E, because I felt like a fraud. Insecurity issues, unsustainable career, blah blah blah. Though, that was also due to the fact that my ADHD wanted to try new things. Plus, friend groups, social media, etc. Not so simple of a world as it was back then.
17:48 i was definitely one of those tarantino-type learners when it came to that aspect of storytelling. However, I was never quite sure where I wanted to go with my work. Well... I knew, but I was the sort of guy who wanted to try every directors style.
Deadpool & Wolverine is (unpopular opinion) overhyped and a slight downgrade from the usual satisfaction I find as a Marvel fan. Wicked however is my favorite movie of 2024! It was a little above what I expected. I love superheroes and musicals. But examples of pure cinema from the two genres are not easy to find. Other than that, I respect these two storytellers as a young cinephile. My favorite Shawn Levy movie has to be Real Steel!
Okay love this conversation… however Shawn talking about the wizard and I annoyed me. I just wish people did a little bit of research before talking about Cynthia Erivo and Ariana for that matter. LET PEOPLE SURPRISE YOU. When you watch a movie hope that this person is gonna BLOW YOUR MIND with their performance. Also with the song Wizard and I, the song just started. What do you expect her to do? Belt it out instantly??? That’s how the song starts, and by the end she belts. Like dang give her a second smh 🤦🏾♀️🙃
I've always thought Shawn Levy's output was pretty mid (Although I have a soft spot for Night at the Museum 2), and I've gained a lot more respect for him as a craftsman after this
gotta give credit props to Shawn for not stereotyping, CRA movie by saying Asians. Rather have him saying Asians than CR model minority stereotype word
Ok. Luca and Denis were unbelievable in this format, but I'm not the biggest fan of both these directors. I hated every single second of DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE. Besides it being unfunny, awful looking, annoying and stupid, the direction wasn't THAT interesting. But I enjoyed FREE GUY and I like Levy's work on STRANGER THINGS, but he's more like a director to do the studio projects, that knows how to technically make a film work. But not a big ARSTIST, who has his own distinct style, like Denis, Luca, Nolan, Wes Anderson etc. Same with Jon M. Chu. He has no real distinct style of his own and the way he directs his projects mostly bores me. But I loved WICKED (mainly because of the story, the songs, and the cast) and he got the job done! He did a wonderful job with the "Defying Gravity" sequence!!! But I'm thrilled to see who's next.
