    New to candles as of this Halloween 2015. I went to thrift stores and found bronze hammered candlesticks for my Halloween table setting. Knowing absolutely nothing about Yankee, I picked up a small Yankee jar with Lavender scent for .50 cents. It was lit only for a short time with only a nickel sized burn indention around the wick.
    After watching this video and knowing more about Yankee, I got a bargain. I will keep my eye open for more of these when shopping at thrift stores.

    Though they are more expensive, I strongly recommend beeswax candles. They smell wonderful even without fragrance, yet they don't have any of the petroleum or chemically synthesized fragrances that may not be as healthy. They can also come in natural fragranced varieties. Candles are also not difficult to make. I recommend using filtered beeswax, which can be bought online or at craft stores. Most craft stores will carry wicks and wick tabs (the metal things that hold the wick at the bottom). I haven't tried it yet, but Candle By the Hour looks like a pretty neat product. Of course, always sure to practice good safety precautions when crafting, designing or burning a candle!

    I had a thing for small jars when i first started buying yankee candles and only recently i realised i was being ripped off! if you calculate the weight of 2 votives its 98g...which is almost the same net weight of a small jar candle (104g). 2 votives have up to 30 hours burn time, also the same as a small jar candle...but small jar candles here are £7.99 and 2 votives only cost £3.60 so you're saving money buying votives as a pose to small jars! the only real benefit of jars is you get to capture the fragrance and you can revisit the smell as you keep the jar.

    I am a manager in a yankee candle down in florida and i completely APPROVE of this video!!! Fantastic job! And most of my guest adore when they can see the abundance of oils in the candle....But i have had guest request candles such as lemon lavander without the ridges of oils. And if you know we do not make lemon lavander in a lg tumblr...so finding some with little to no oils is insane!

    I’ve learned so much from your video and I appreciate you doing it! One thing I must disagree on... The candle after a year will start separating from the oil. It does not ferment or become stronger or anything like that. It’s simply separating the oil from the wax... but thank you for teaching me that I should find candles with extra oil in them. I did not know that!

    I bought over 20 large Yankee candles this past January. In order for me to smell these candles I have to light up 3 at a time. Yankee candles done lost their smell and fragrance. This company are ripping us off because they are making the candle smell cheaper and lighter. Disappointed.

      I totally agree with you years and years ago that used to smell wonderful. That used to be my favorite. I would have so many Yankee Candles. But now you can't smell them hardly at all. Something changed in the company.

      I agree, so I switched to wax melts and one warmer makes my entire house smell wonderful! We have a huge open bay type house, and it really works. Also, if you warm the Yankee candles then they smell much stronger. I got so disappointed with them not being strong anymore, so I started busting the glass and chopping them up and making tarts. Then I have soooo many pieces to use and it’s wayyy more concentrated that way for some reason.

    I rarely trim wicks either. I just get a napkin, when the candle is cool of course, and turn the candle upside down over it. Then I use the napkin to pull off the mushrooms and the tips of the wick. The napkin catches the ash too. It's ready to relight.

    Great, great info! Thanks! My trick: to "trim" my wicks, I get a Kleenex or napkin and, once the candle is completely cool, turn it upside down and pull off the tip of the wick. The wick will be longer than 1/4", but the messy, sooty tops end up in the Kleenex, not all over the candle or your fingers. You can always come back and trim it shorter if you want.

  • @TT-oq4fj

    As a soy candlemaker, I like all your advice but if you get the beads of fragranceoil on top it is an indication that the wax and oils didn't get mixed properly or rhe candle "sweats" because there is too much oil in it, after aging the wax gets seperated from the oil, although you get more scent, it is a fire hazzard because you are burning pure oil, so be carefull. Love the vids.

  • @BeautyandtheBlogify

    Well, of course it always comes down to the "nose of the beholder." If you are going for Yankee, a top one for me is Fluffy Towels. It's such a pretty, clean scent that doesn't knock you out. And I actually really like Sun & Sand if you like the beach scents but want a light version.

    You know, I've always had that problem too & have never really thought about it. The only way to ensure that it does not poof everywhere is to only put it out by a candle snuffer. That way it simply loses the heat & goes out. Of course when we blow on them that air is going to make those embers pop everywhere. Some people I know have just set the candle lid back on but that depends if you care if it gets discolored or anything. Hope that helps :)

    You can use the same burner using Yankee tarts. I don't personally use a bulb warmer I always just use a hot plated electric one. The only thing you would ever need to worry about the wattage is the difference between wax cubes/tarts & burning oils. Fragrance oils need to burn on a different temperature. Hope that helped :)

    This video was very educational. I am a first time buyer from Yankee candle so I'm only buying a sample set so I can test out their scents (I don't live anywhere near a store) and a whoopie small candle since it's on sale and I don't wait to spend double the money or more on a bigger candle in case I don't like the smell. I hope the lid works on small, you didn't say in this video and Yankee doesn't say on their site. They say it's for the jar candles so I assume it works on all sizes.

    I never knew there was so much to know about candles & maintenance! I've recently fell in love w/ candles, & I consider them my indulgence. Thank you so much for this! I'd love to learn more about "collections" vs "seasonals", & those "toppers". Where would I find those? Thanks!

    • @BeautyandtheBlogify
      @BeautyandtheBlogify  10 років тому +1

      Well it's one of those things where I look at it as a $28 candle so I'm going to make sure I get my money's worth. As far as collections/seasonal & such, seasonal are pretty basic as far as scents that are going to be themed to what time of year it's targeting. Christmas tree scent for Christmas. Collections will be a theme in general like the "Popsicle" ones last summer that were all scents relating to popsciles. They kind of get inspirations for a category & stick with that. And the toppers are technically Yankee Candle's. I've noticed places like Michael's have started making their own but I've never used them. The best time to buy the illuma lids is with a coupon or during the friends/family sale they do a few times a year. Hope that helps had to cram in a few words : )

    I am a new candle enthusiast ha now that I live with my girlfriend and we have two cats. We pretty much need these to not smell cat piss, I like village candles with the two wicks, it provides a more even burn and they last extremely long. They are probably the number one off brand Yankee you could buy. I like Yankee, but boy are they pricey! Plus the jars burn weird, I have to have two flames.

    • @rambow70
      @rambow70 9 років тому

      I like the two wicks in winter because I like to think that they help heat my apartment just a tad haha but those metal jar tops that insulate the candle and help it burn efficiently is what I am lacking.

    • @bensmith9714
      @bensmith9714 9 років тому

      With the two wick candles instead of parrifin wax, quite a few of these are made using soy wax (looks smoother) but they don't really burn that well and leave a not so nice wax mark as it burns down. Obviously, just my opinion.

    Well, I haven't really had any problems with pooling. The few times I have were with 2 wick tumblers. I have a very odd way of fixing them but it's just what works for me. I literally scoop out the side wax that isn't pooling because it is soft & mushy & put on a paper plate aside. It will take several hours of burning for the candle to correct itself. Once it pools evenly & deep I can add the wax back in a little at a time until it's gone. It's strange but it's my little method.

    I see that your video was done in 2013, back then yeah the candles did smell good but they do not have as much smell to them as they used to. I don't know what happened with the company but they used to be my favorite I used to love Yankee Candle I would spend all my money on candles. But now there is hardly any smell to them whatsoever. I really think they have changed through the years.

    Hello Stephanie! Thanks a lot for the helpful video, especially about wax types.
    I do have an issue with one of my YC though (Jelly Beans): it keeps spitting out little puffs of black smoke. And the problem is that it puffs so much that one day I realised my appartement was filled up with smoke, had to clean up the entire appartement afterwards because pretty much everything was covered with a light layer of soot. So I guess the wick might be faulty. I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried trimming it several times but it doesn’t change a thing. I never had any issue with my YC before, only that one. Would you recommend a solution? Also I totally agree with you about Illumina lids, I never burn my candles without a lid 👌

    Hi. I just wanted to ask a question to see if I understood right... I know some hand-made candles have to cure but I never thought about Yankee benefitting from it. Did I understand right that if you leave them for some time the wax evens out? Spreads throught the candle? If so I'm definitely going to try this. I bought a Beach Wood which smelled of nothing so I returned it but I might buy another and hang on to it :)

    I know this video is a bit old but I just wanted to know if using a votive candle in a wax burner is as good as using a tart because I have seen some videos of people using them?

      Lydia yea you could melt them in it. They may not come off quite as strong since the tarts have more oils in them but in a smaller space they do great!

    Do Yankees not lose throw after a few years?

  • @BeautyandtheBlogify
    @BeautyandtheBlogify  11 років тому

    Oh yea. People always say crap like "you'll never burn that in a lifetime" it's like yea if you burn stuff regularly it's very possible. People never stop to think that EVERYONE has a vice. I just hate how people slam wax/beauty gurus because it's "wasteful" to them. Well Hell season passes to sports events or clothing is "wasteful" to me? lol Sorry that troll form last week still has me geared up!

    It’s so insane that Yankee has one wick in the large jar. For 20 years I’ve known it won’t burn right. They haven’t noticed?🤦‍♀️

    The throw with the smooth wax is NOWHERE near as good as the marbled wax. I refuse to buy anything with the disgusting new wax because the throw sucks and it leaves a horrible residue on the inside of the tumbler. Also, votives and tarts are made of the same wax. Tarts aren't packed at tightly, but if you cut them in half and use them as tarts as I do, they crumble just like tarts do. Neither one is the same wax as a jar or tumbler.

    Yankee candles are made from cheap wax (paraffin), it's a rip off and there are better brands.
