The Airbus A380 vs A350 - What Plane Is Best?

  • The Airbus A380 is a groundbreaking aircraft in many respects. When Airbus launched the double-decker behemoth quadjet program in 2000, it generated a massive amount of excitement for an industry that, at the time, saw no end to the need for capacity. However, it turned out to be a financial disappointment for its manufacturer.

A380 is a beast to fly on . So comfortable but the future is going to lie with the A350 which has magnificent range.

@Su Geun Some people are agree to travel semi standing, if this makes flying cheaper.
A380 was just made too late, they don't have any resell value. And range of A350 XLR with 370ETOPS just make spike and hub obsolete.

Emirates make money because this is tourist destination, they can be more profitable if they change a380 to a350.
IRC JAL also make money using a380 because they fly into Hawaii.

The biggest market demand on A380 isn't full passenger / freighter version...
    but the combi version
Using the main deck as cargo compartment and upper deck for passenger,
A380 can carry cargo and passenger similar to A330-300 + B767-300F in a single flight
Unfortunately, airbus didn't go for that, or unbale to.
That leave A380 is a very bad situation as it can't carry much cargo in lower deck.

      @@pandafatmat
As a load control of multiple aircraft type including A380,
The MTOW of A380 is enough to carry more than 130T of cargo in standard 9~10hr cargo flight.
      A380 average fuel burn ~12T/hr * 10hr + 1hr extra (ALTN/Final Res) = 132T
      MTOW 560T (some version 570/575T) - 285T (DOW) - 132T (final) = 143T (payload)
The limitation is MZFW (less than 360T, = max payload ~72T)
Similar with B747M or converting B747-400 to B747-400BCF,
By inputting additional structural strengthen (Body and gear) to increase MZFW of A380
      If airbus can increase MZFW to 385T and MLDW to 400T or 405T, A380M can carry a total of 100T payload (pax + cargo) with ~13.5hr flight time (HKG-LHR / HKG-LAX / NRT-JFK / ICN-LAX / LAX-LHR / etc)
The upper deck for pax, approximately 200~250 /25T (estimate 100kg per pax, include body weight and baggage)
Main deck for cargo, around 19~21PMC with 96in height (Standard Q6 contour) / 60T (3T/PMC)
Lower deck for cargo + baggage, 6PMC+6AKE ~15T, 10AKE for baggage (weight included in pax calc)
*For main deck, we may have the fwd section for pax if can be approved by FAA/EASA
      That will be similar to a A330-200 (250~260 in 2 class + 15~20T of cargo in lower deck) + A330-200F (68T max)
The questions are 1) Approved from FAA/EASA and 2) landing gear
I wish I can really see this happen,
      Airlines will love it

can you do a segment on the a350 versus the 777x? on paper, it seems like the a350 beats the triple 7X even before introduction. how could a partial composite aircraft like the 777x compete with a full composite aircraft like the a350 even has a freighter although it carries a slight bit more?

A350 is not a complete composite airframe.. and neither is the 787 .. but 787 has more carbon fiber .. not carbon panels inlew of aluminum pannels riveted to a aluminum frame.

I am very much love the A380 but sadly i have never been onboard an A380 in my life and at least 36 A380s are retired and again here's the list (because i am sorry to repeat this again but i think this is very important to us and you better copy this list) :
    4 Singapore Airlines (2018) + 2 (2021)
10 Air France (1 retired few months before covid)
All (14) Lufthansa (6 A380s sold back to Airbus by October 2022. Lufthansa confirmed the retirement of the entire A380 fleet back in April 1st 2022, however might reactivate 4-6 A380s due to the rapid return of air travel demand and further delays of the Boeing 777X.)
    1 Hifly
    2 Emirates
2 China Southern Airlines (February 2022)
    1 Qantas (June 2022).
Maybe next year, i will get a chance to fly onboard the A380 and choose window seat for the flight.

For 14 -15 hr long- haul flts, my first choice is and would be A-380s ( as long as it’d be available / flying ); ex.: JFK to Dubai ; for 6 -8 hr flts, A-350 is absolutely ok ( although many airlines, in the near future, will be using A-350s for the long-haul flts ); A-380 deliveries has ceased but may be operating until 2030 with the existing equipments..!!

It will never come again. Makes sense if you think about it. Airlines have trouble filling the plane completely, so it is not flexible at all. Planes with only 1 floor are much easier to fill and are much more flexible in use.

Double decker planes can’t be serviced by every airport too so that limits what routes an airline can use them on (aka mostly major cities). Even Emirates, the largest operator of A380s still runs single decker 777 for flexibility
Not to say it can’t be done but it would be a pretty niche product that can’t be reallocated if demande shifts

    then i start imagine on both aircrafts;
    1. re-engine A380 with 4x Trent-XWB-84 to gain efficiency, range, shorter takeoff & quieter noise.
    2. transfer the previous GP7000/ Trent-900 to power older A330-200/300
    3. what is like if there's an ACJ350 Combi/ Convertible (VIP area on Front, Airline seating on Mid cabin & various cargo in the Aft & Lower space......or additional convertible passenger layout in the Aft) just like what #AlexanderCraker doing with his latest design...
then added 2 sets overhead Loft (commonly serve as A350 Crew Bunk) on door-2 (upwards & backwards) fuction as additional bedding for Passengers.

The A380 is an excellent aircraft for long haul flights. I also agree that most airlines didn’t implement it correctly. Meaning is some situations airlines should offer extended long haul flights like 2 to 3 times a week. Vs everyday. For example I can book a flight ✈️ from Denver to Munich 7 days a week. Why not offer it 3 days a week instead and use a 380?

A380 is perfect for Hub and spoke Business model. Only Middle East carriers can fill the entire A380. It's based on the airline's region and geographical position of the region. For- ex, DXB, Doha and Turkish Airways. yet there are so many disadvantages when you operate A380. on the other hand, A350 is unique, fuel-efficient, and more accessible to new networks. Even though I'm a massive fan of the A380, for the airline's better performance, I would go for 350-1000.

Who wrote this. The landscape has shifted, covid aside it’s still the best aircraft for slot restricted airports. London Paris etc
It’s more relevant now than ever. Comparing co2 per hour is foolish when one has the additional passenger capacity as another 737.maybe co2 per passenger which the a380 is ahead. Or if you could put on twice the flights to include the A350 is slot restricted airports the economies of scale of staff os loss. It has been under utilised by most airlines

Controversial, but in terms of traveller's perceptions, I think the A380 is a bit overrated. I hear lots of travellers tell me nothing can beat the A380 and they had a lot to say when Mr Al Baker called the A380 what he called it. In terms of passenger experience, from my experience, the only area where the A380 trumps the A350 is noise levels. I didn't find the A350 lacking in sense of space, luggage storage, etc. I guess I'm somewhat spoiled growing up in Asia, where the air travel experience seems to be more pleasant than in Western countries. That goes some way to explaining why people rave about the A380 that's typcially operated by airlines in the east, or it could be be simply down to prestige about flying on "the biggest".
