The characters of Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei developed differently from the beginning, they were pure raw innocent and funny. The last 10 episodes they grow darker and high voltage. Ning Yi wasn't as playful as when he was the prince, and Zhiwei wasn't as brave as when she was before. And that suits the ending best, as they become mature, they aren't children anymore so they won't make a happy couple, they will fight even more as husband and wife, another betrayal perhaps between the two? Good to know they walk each other dream, one wish to be an emperor, one wish to be free. But the last 10 episodes aren't memorable enough and I still can't move from the first episodes where they're teasing and seducing each other, they were playful and fun to watch. Let's appreciate the hardworks of the crew and the actors. 🎉🎉🎉

@@xikibo It's a shame some of the dialogues got dropped in the final cut. From the behind the scene clips, seems like 1 reason she chose that path is to give him no reason to quash any more rebellions. As long as she as the last heir of the previous dynasty is alive, those who want to revive the old dynasty may continue to harbour unrealistic dreams that lead to more bloodshed.
A real shame as a marriage between the new & old dynasties could just as well bring the two sides together, especially since both strive for wise governance & justice. Then again, given the palace intrigues of previous 69 episodes, maybe the people around them would continue to plot murders & mayhem.
Supposedly the novel this is based on has a happier ending, with her death being faked.
Interestingly the Chinese title of the series emphasise Ning Yi (Tian Sheng [dynasty] Long Song) where as the English title could arguably be more about Zhi Wei (surname Feng = phoenix, her brother's secret org called Fire Phoenix, phoenix representing empress vs dragon representing emperor). I wonder why they chose inconsistent titles for Chinese vs English.
Anyway, too sad an ending 😭

In the real story, it ends well. There is another legend attached to it too.
Fun fact: besides the novel actually having a happy ending. Another epilogue also reveals that the 1st empress of Dacheng (aka FZW's ancestor) was Fuyao (from Legend of Fuyao). Iykyk. She and Wuji were legendary figures who established the empire together and FZW is their last descendant

The beautiful thing about this series, they both ❤ each other, and same heroic. Ning Yi very charming of course zhiwei fall for him. Story of Juliet with her extraordinary Romeo. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I watch this series, never ever skip anything till 70 episodes, it's so worth to see even when there's nothing, Chen Kun make it worth to watch. I can't believe there is only one kissing scene throughout 70 eps. But many teasing in the first episodes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤Chen Kun.

I knew it from the few first episodes hintings it won't be a happy ending romantically but they parted without anger at eo. I hope we get to see them together again as commoners or modern time for their next life hahahah

Great show! I am always amazed at the amount of poisonings that occur in Chinese dramas, but then I read Chinese history and I realize how much history has been changed by poisoned tea or wine. I am also impressed by the soldiers who stand for hours at a time and don't talk or react to any shenanigans they see.

It has been on Netflix since 2018. I am glad now that it is on you tube because now hopefully more people can come to appreciate it.
Sad ending. Will we ever see a imperial drama with a happy ending? We can find many explanations to make it logical like Feng Zhiwei was young and ideologist. While Ning Yi was a more realistic character with real life goals. Like we said in French, he knew “we can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs”. Their differences grows with the time. But Feng Zhiwei suicidal is just not right according to her optimistic personality. Agreed with other comments that this drama could have resumed in 40 episodes. If the producers push it to 70, I would have expected that they developed maturity to the characters. Like in real life, most couples had conflicts but times are sometimes the beat remedy for reflection what’s really matter. I read on a psychology article that when you hurt someone, the apology is only the first step. It take in average 10 good actions toward the personne to get a real forgiveness. This very long drama will definitely had the screen time to make it right. Drama doesn’t need to be a synonyms of tragedy.

I don't think the change in Zhi Wei is unrealistic. Losing your family & other loved ones in such a brutal way could change someone's outlook entirely. Put yourself in her shoes, would you be able to forgive your soulmate if his family was responsible for the death of yours & he cannot extricate himself from his family? On top of that you have family members who insist on life & death feuding with him. Surely it would be a complicated love-hate relationship, not just little quarrels that can be forgiven that easily.
It'd be especially hard in a society with strong social rules. Most people in such society were not individuals who can just do whatever they want.
I didn't see all episodes realizing it's sad ending but now I learned the reason from your point of view . Very good thanks.

Romeo kills Juliet's relatives and she is deeply hurt. But she puts her love above everything else and forgives him.
As we know, neither of them survive, but their love retains its dignity and beauty beyond death.
🥺🥺ahhhh, this drama was amazing. Tbh I think i may be a tragedy junkie by this point because all my favourite dramas end so miserably 😅 I find the character building and chemistry is always so deep in the saddest dramas and that's what makes them so special and memorable. Also thematically, it shows the struggles of power and staying true to one's original goals which I find so interesting, especially when it comes to how much the original goals have the potential to become distorted and stray so far from the characters' original intentions (e.g: love becoming obsession, the desire for peace becoming the need to control, the need for safety becoming vengeance etc.)
I know many people aren't happy with how many historical dramas end tragically but I kinda think it's part of the realism and also the greater meaning behind the genre? Idk but I think often there's a greater emphasis on exploring morality in historical imperial dramas and the idea of death and an unhappy ending sort of acts as a consequence (as the characters' obsessions and overlooking of the simpler things leads to their downfall- such as the prince's obsession with power and vengeance, neither the ML or FL being able to put aside their own personal troubles and positions)? I think the idea of responsibilities to those around them is often a driving point for the characters' downfall as neither are able to prioritise their romantic relationship and this repression of feeling ultimately ruins them both in the end.
Moral of the story- don't forget to prioritise your own needs sometimes and never forget your original goals. Even the strongest relationships can be broken if you don't communicate with one another.
Dramas that I think have a similar exploration of morality are 'The Wolf', 'Empress Ki' and 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo'- both really show how the strongest relationships can end broken and in tears.

I don’t like how the story had ended.Now they are free and can be together, why? They could have unite two sects in their marriage and bring peace to all through their union. All the lives that were lost and all they both fought for is useless.. Such a horrible way to end the story. At the end, I regretted watching it😢.. Those sleepless nights I wasted!😢
I even got schooled by my hubby for my addiction of watching constantly.😆😆 . Usually by experience told me to watch end episode, since I like the flow of the story I don't read end . But now regretting . I only like and appreciate happy or logical even sacrificed endings rather sad and no sense ones

Awesome written story. I knew from the beginning when her mother made her take a vow not to marry Yi she would be his enemy but this was all based on many misunderstandings of what really happened with a small child being used as a pawn. Then when the old emperor planted that seed in her mind that her marriage would never survive because of all the trauma from the countless deaths that she blamed herself for; as well as, Yi then she believed the lie of hatred and revenge. Without true love, without fault finding and having forgiveness along with an intimate romantic love relationship with Yi they would have made it. 100% sure.
They got caught up in all the political drama instead of truly loving one another. I guess they felt they could not afford themselves the luxury of actually forgiving themselves and each other as well as loving one another.
It's traditional Chinese values reigning supreme. Personal happiness took second place behind duties.
Feng Zhiwei just stabbed me in the heart with that ending😢 I really hope that the hardships they had been through together over many episodes would remind them of how difficult it was to get this far and of the deepest love they developed throughout. The prince would go to her rescue without hesitation, not caring if he would die or not. With that, they grew even deeper in love. And I am sure that, with her intelligent mind, she could see this through. But clearly, what Prince Chu had done for her was not enough for her to live on. How sad! She doesn’t want to feel anymore pain by taking the dumbest short cut but has left him with the most painful thing to live with. I just feel like he doesn’t deserve to live on like that for what he had done for her. Who’s cutting the onions?😢😢😢
When Feng Zhiwei threatened the old Emperor with the knife, she really intended to kill him with her words. Ironically, his response back to her inflicted more damage because what he said was hard for her to reason out of being true. Feng Zhiwei had so much strength and endurance in this journey for so long, but after being worn down, her unprocessed sadness, depression, and guilt overwhelmed her. In the end, I don't think she did feel love for Ning Yi anymore. He still regarded her warmly, but she was pretty cold and a bit manipulative. Her priority was merely to save the last of her people before exiting. She started out as a resilient intellectual opponent who could think her way out of any situation -but in the end, all the trauma couldn't be rationalized, and her life wasn't what she wanted it to be. There needed to be a way to solve it. She refused to play Go with Ning Yi at the end, saying she didn't have the skills to play the game. Even though she had beaten the Emperor at the game earlier in life, she now viewed herself less confidently or just lost all interest. Ning Yi was pretty pissed about her attitude, but he still tried to get her to come around. Maybe he just wanted to believe they would finally be together happily in marriage, even though they clearly weren't in good spirits.
ning yi lives for the future whereas zhiwei lives for the past. their path crossed but it's time to say goodbye. coz as you said, zhiwei is worned out. ning yi as well actually. but zhiwei just couldn't take it anymore. i bet, it is because those ''resentment and gratitude forced by those who missed the old era'' to zhiwei. her zhangsun brother literally evil! while ning yi focused on other thing, let say state affair?, zhiwei's mind only revolving about the past and feelings. but our mc, their love can't save them if only one side work for the others. sad ending (ps. it's not the same as the ending from the book).
I get the same sense that she had given up. But the dialogue that didn't make the cut seems to imply she chose that path so he wouldn't have to worry about more rebellions (& become more ruthless like his father). With the last heir of the previous dynasty gone, those who still harboured any thoughts of reviving the old dynasty would have to give up. So sort of save his soul type of love? Still unbearably sad though.
She refused in such way because it's a polite way to refuse. And about the other things, it's a cultural thing too. You must take culture into consideration. Yes, she was too damaged by the trauma in the end.
I had to skip 24 episodes and jump to the last episode just to find out the ending is full of sadness . Chang Kun or Ning Yi and Ni Ni ( Feng Zhiwei ) are the most best actor and actress . It was a Magnificent drama 🎭🎭🎭🎭👏👏👏👏✨✨✨✨✨✨

I absolutely enjoyed this drama.. The ending is unexpected and I would have wanted to see Gu Nanyi at least wind up related to the protector gang leader and getting married himself, which I thought was why the Si con girl was in the story for.. Oh well. I would have liked a union of the kingdoms, Tiangshen, Dacheng and Jinshi even if threaded through marriage.

What a great drama with great meanings to ponder what life is all about.
用了两个月把这个剧看完了，服装、美工、场景、制作精致，画面看着非常美。剧本是最大的弱点，人物行为动机前后不一致的地方很多，情节上不合逻辑和情理的地方也很多，这可能是导致很多人不满乃至弃剧的地方。演员还好，都演得很认真，个人最欣赏辛子砚，演技超级赞，台词功力深厚，查了一下他的经历才知道他因为说错话被封杀，真是太可惜了。
不到4个小时看完了全部70集，感觉没落下啥
Dear croton media, please keep it shorter next time. And please, if you’re going to drag it out make sure you give the characters a happy ending. This ending was too sad, and, because English subtitles only played till episode 40 or so, I couldn’t really watch the rest, so skipped through it mostly.
They didn't make this series, this series aired on Chinese television in 2018, and it might very well have been a happy ending, the original one that was in the book, if they weren't forced to cut it short.
I found English captions in bilibili channel Google search. I commend the acting skills of the actors but regrets at the end because how the story ended. I think it's a coward way to end her life by jumping off the cliff. For her character, it did not bring justice to her character..

Menurut gw ini adalah ending yg paling epic.. karna jika ning yi & zhi wei bersama maka "kutukan" kaisar gakan berakhir.. seperti kata kaisar... zhi wei hanya akan jd batu sandungan Ning yi, akan ada terus pergejolakan, karna latar belakang zhi wei... malah kl hepi ending kesannya terlalu di paksakan... yg paling masuk akal adalah ending yg seperti ini.. faktanya di dlm kehidupan nyata ending seperti ini yg selalu terjadi.. kehidupan yg tidak selalu sesuai harapan.. kl sampai mereka bersatu akan terjadi never ending konflik.. This ending is just too sad. Love the drama, but don't think I can rewatch the last few episodes, at least not for the storyline. Happiness ended after episode 47 😭 The costume design though... I can watch & drool over all day all night forever.
Over the years even though the ending was not good. There were many videos made on character studies of the main characters and also Quippe Quest did a synopsis of the whole story. I think those who did stick with it agreed the acting was really great and there was a lot of money in the production right down to the brocade in the costumes and the intricate expansive sets. While the story was a slow burn many people appreciated it did not heavily rely on tropes and their relationship wasn't rushed. It was only in the last 20 episodes that it seems someone else was doing the writing because it really did not make much sense and a lot of those episodes and arcs weren't necessary.
Chen Kun is indeed a really good actor, I also liked him in Painted Skin and Lost in 1949. Ning Yi was such a multifaceted character. He was morally grey as he would make promises and then break them. He also broke the rules a lot and somehow got away with it. He had two faces. When his hair is down, he is his true vulnerable self. When his hair is up he can be more theatrical , affective, manipulative, and sometimes just plain mean like when he kicked Zhi Wei to "help her" and made fun of her predicament when Helian Zheng said he wanted to marry her.
In the book Nan Yi's character is autistic which is why he does not socialize or talk much with other people and why he is focused on just Zhi Wei. However, when he pretended to be the doctor, he was very verbose which really did not make a lot of sense that he could convincingly pull that off if he was really autistic. I found that to be a character break that really stood out.
I really did not like the actor who played Feng Hao much, but later appreciated that he was playing a teenager and what do teenagers do. Fight with their siblings, play hooky, and just want to have fun and not care about consequences. Qiu Ming Ying on the other hand was so controlled herself, but she did not really try to discipline her children well. She was a martial artist and Feng Hao did not even know a single move to protect himself.
While the emperor will never be father of the year, he did love his children and pretty much knew when they were up to something and was not adverse to manipulating them and use them against each other or dangle carrots in front of them to control them.
Loved your write up particularly the last paragraph 😊. I left the show at 48th episode and saw the 70 th episode. Now at peace spending for better story.

Just a remark about Fenghao ; Mrs Qiu intentionally harbored an objective that is to USE fenghao as foil as not to make fengziwei shine as she was exceptional.
The only person who did SEE through Fengziwei is Ningyi from chapter 1 in the book while he was on secret mission inside her uncle Qiu residence .
That's why I do agree with your analysis of Ningyi 's psyche , he was indeed an autistic character..truly revealed in the book with many incidents from. The 3 parts of the novel . Shame though , in the drama they decided to look away over FZW/NY s tendency to kill easily and that caring for " innocent lives " wasn't even a matter to them .
He wanted Zhi Wei and Power ,if he ever sensed any loss of those two elements , he was so ready to take away all the world down along with him...

Audiences rarely root for the villains if they don't have any redeeming qualities. Many of the deaths were not in their control, and people did die for them. Those deaths they ordered were for people who "deserved " it. However, killing for vengeance never has a good ending. As Confucius said :"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." Nin Yi decided to give up power to be a commoner and learned that without power he was still targeted and could not protect anyone, himself or anyone he loved.
i never quite understood why Qiu Ming was willing to give up her son, to save Zhi Wei. After all she had already lost the unnamed child and her husband for her. Was this a diehard loyalty to the dynasty or something else? it isn't like she was giving Feng Hao a choice. At the end ,Feng Hao at least was willing to die for Zhi Wei even though he had been lied to all his life.
Nin Yi had a lot of baggage. Mommy issues, daddy issues, the only thing that actually kept him from going crazy like the Dayue Prince who had similar experiences, was his stubbornness and quest for vengeance and his dream of a peaceful word Even his mother said she did not want him to give up his dreams, she only wished him to have a happy life.
I now understand why the censorshop board decided to curtail production episodes to just 40. When you keep dragging it for so long like 70 episodes or more, you simply lose the plot in the end! Actors cannot do much when the script itself defies logic!
I doubt it would have ended this way if they had allowed the series to finish properly, this isn't even the ending from the book.
@@justbg Actually, I took a peak at ep 70 simply because Eng subtitles had disappeared from ep 39 )): So out of curiosity, I skipped 29 episodes. But some where in between watched the build-up too & realised that she killed herself out of spite than anything else. Ning Yi was simply too traumatised to have made a good partner for her. She being so much more righteous & forthright was simply heart-broken in the end for the loss of so many people who stood in his way, however he had reasoned to getting rid of them. Such a lovely but sad story. 😮💨😒

@@cloudfish1829 In the book Zhi Wei faked her death to give Ning Yi a clean slate as the emperor. Ning Yi really did not want to be the emperor. At heart he wanted to be a commoner and spend his life with Zhi Wei. He also fakes his death and the hapless 10th Prince Ning Ji becomes the emperor, but he got Ning Yi and Zhi Wei ( he knew they were still alive) to agree to stay nearby so he could get their advice. Ning Yi grew tired of Ning Ji calling on him for every little thing no matter if it was day or night. He told Zhi Wei it was time for them to run away and change their names and start a new life away from the palace. Actually this is a new translation. The substance of what was said is actually more accurate. In the old translation Zhi Wei was his "racoon" in this one, she is a "Civet Cat". I am glad this new copy was made. The old ones were in poor condition after being run so many times.

One of the best chinese historical dramas. Ning yi and this drama will always be in my heart.
So far I haven’t seen a Chinese historical drama with happy ending or satisfying ending. Ending your life after so many people sacrificed their lives to save yours is the epitome of selfishness.
中间各种故事线，没有一个误会得到解释、没有一个冤案得到平反。弄到后来摊子摊的太大了，故事线一个都没收回来。最后一句“他们的目的就是让我们反目成仇”就一笔带出了结局。大成遗孤不是要复国吗？让两个爱人反目就能复国了吗？女主每次都要离开寻找安稳的生活，怎么每次还要冲到男主可能出现的战火中呢？男主要留下她结果她又不肯。是不是这种作的死去活来的女人就可以让男人爱不释手？亏的演员那么卖力演出，内容实在是无脑。
The end saddened me. As they are free, they were supposed to reap and enjoy the time, energy, sweat, the family, and friends they had lost during their struggles to survive . Most importantly, nothing should be able to separate them or shake their love for each because they survived at the end, and they should be able to enjoy their freedom and love. Ning yi will leave a sad life because he will not be able to forget her. I love their customs and make up, it has a touch of elegance, giving the audience the impression of reality .

A very good drama..I shed a lot of tears and so sad they end up in separate ways however so much lesson I learned from this drama.. thank you for letting me watched this unforgettable series ..

It has been a while since I watched The Rise of Phoenixes and the ending still upsets me every time I remember it. After everything they had gone through and sacrificed, Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei deserved so much better than this. What makes me more upset is that they did have a better ending in the source material, which is the novel, so there was absolutely no reason for the drama to have the ending it had.
After watching so many cdramas for 3 years, this is the only time i finish the 70 episode series in almost 2 days just by skipping and fast forward many scenes. The main lead couple's chemistry and quality of acting are not worthy for this kind of project 😢 if ever they make this in 2023/2024 with other production company like IQIYI, We tv/Tencent, Huace, Youku, etc. and other directors & producers with proven quality works and also just keeping Chen Kun and Ni Ni then surely they could justify the story/plot & turn this into one of the best drama of all time.
Side note, the main lead resembles me the cast of Dong Yi, Han Hyo Joo and Ni Ni have the same aura and beauty they could pass as a sister 😅
I have to say that some of those drama companies do produce commercial successes, but very few of their dramas really shine in terms of quality and acting ability. For the most part, there are some I like, even though I see the flaws ( tropes, predictable lines, cookie cutter plots. Rom-coms in historical dramas, bad makeup or costume choices, sets with peeling paint, bad lighting, a few young actors with promise but a lot of bad acting from the main leads, including some popular ones that rely on their looks not their ability.) There are a few low budget films that were well crafted considering their budget restraints. But the trend now is for shorter dramas. That led to some dramas being cut into a part one and part 2 that played consecutively. It has also led to some really short dramas with a tighter plot and fewer arcs. Now, the rule is you have to wait something like a year for a sequel. I am still waiting for Joy of Life second part to air. Its' been 5 years now. It took 2 years or more to write the script, the actors made a couple of other series together, they finally filmed it and still waiting. The actors are getting so old, some of them won't be recognizable and some roles will be recast.

love how this drama series tell a story, but a little confused in some parts. love both male and female lead actors. love the settings, costumes, and the music. l wish the love birds could be together, but sad ending they were not. 😢
Hope to have a special episode where in they live happily. I can't get over, it's really sad.huhuhu...however the acting, the plot, and cinematography is a masterpiece. But still I'm so sadddsd..it's realy hurt.

Vielen Dank fürs Hochladen. Das Drama hat mir gut gefallen, trotz teilweise schlechter Bildqualität. Es ist sehr professionell umgesetzt und die Musik und Kostüme sind ein Genuss. Manches ist jedoch unrealistisch, wie etwa die Kampfszene in der die Hauptdarstellerin gefangen wird. Das Ende ist auch frustrierend. Für gewöhnlich wurden in historischer Zeit Allianzen durch Heirat geschlossen. Insofern verhält sich der Kaiser unklug.

Acabo de terminar de ver este drama: IMPRESONANTE !!! Felicitaciones al o los guionistas una historia con mayúsculas, el casting de los actores perfecto, cada cual estuvo a la altura de su personaje. He llorado un montón pero no podía terminar de otra manera, creo que en los primeros capítulos ya sabia como iba a terminar, pero aún asi seguí mirando..... Super recomendable, como el hombre es capaz de sacar su lado más feróz pero también reflejar la bondad, la lealtad, el amor.... Estas palabras me salen del alma y no quería dejar de escribir. Felicitaciones al director. El trabajo de todo el equipo se vió reflejado al contar esta triste pero maravillosa historia. GRACIAS !!!!!

and most the killed people was because of the previus dynasty revenge and stupidity of the emperore and the other sons
they should be together and give example of foregivness .
the two are very clever and fit to rule by faith they could do alot to the country and the people .
the end is un logic made fengshiwei stupid without no aim and that is against her smart character that was showed in the 51 episodes
if they didnot want to make them together fine she could have been lift ning yi without killing her self these un logic at all

The burdens of being born into a royal family made it impossible for them to be together. NIng Yi is left alone to complete his dream of becoming a good emperor. Zhi Wei knew that only her death could make both the Da Cheng refugees and NIng Yi move on. Too many people died in the struggle for power. This is not what either or them wanted. Ning Yi changed from a calculating "damaged" Prince who early on had to learn not to trust or love anyone easily and to have two faces. One of a weak calculating Prince, and the other a vulnerable abandoned child missing familial love. Zhi Wei was a smart Princess raised as a commoner who had the opposite of NIng Yi. She had a loving family, only to be used as a pawn in the power play. She matured into a noble woman, who no longer could lead the carefree life she had and was restrained by her status. Both of them lived with the guilt of all of the lives that were hurt or died for them.

Ridiculous ending! She had already married before anyway. She should have just gone back to Jingsi to live her life as queen. That would have been a better ending.

It seems unusual for Ning Yi to stay at his mansion after becoming the emperor rather than the palace.
They never ended up together so sad. She lost so much including him but heart will always have that stain......the stain the royal family placed on her.....her mom, her brother are no more....nevertheless they both understand each other.

Debería haber una segunda temporada ya que se trata de una historia creativa, creo que el final es un error del autor ya que se pudo haber canalizado la historia y hacerla más larga e interesante y buscar al fina un final feliz pero de película porque muchas veces la realidad supera la ficción ya que la mayoría de veces las personas buscan la paz y no creo que en esos tiempos solo sean sangrientos porque más se parece a una historia de terror y sin esperanza, creo que el final debería ser reescrito en una segunda temporada. Cómo debería de ser porque la esperanza debería ser lo último que no se pierde.

Poor Ning Yi. Although I do not like the ending, a happy ending just wouldn't make sense. So many lives lost, I too, perhaps, would not be able to calmly live with the guilt. Bravo to the whole cast and everyone involved in producing these series. A masterpiece for sure!
