Apart from being a fantastic player that really enunciates his sound, that horn is known for having a sound that really speaks and doesn't get foggy. I guess you could call it a present sound, hence, "Chicago Presence". His sense of tuba sound mixed with that horn is a great combination.
Practice, mainly. But you gotta practice the right things, such as proper airflow to create the ideal sound, thinking of space in between the notes and what your lips and air have to do to connect large-ish slurs and lip slurs alike
@@tubamarc8891 Is it possible to get that quality in the extreme low range (like anything down from an Eb pretty much) on a 4/4? What's an effective way of building the lower register?

That’s actually a shelf liner! It’s so my tuba doesn’t slide around on my lap.

You need to do some slow lung expansion exercises
