Rekha (Bhanurekha Gemini Ganesan) is an Indian actress who has acted in over 60 Hindi films. She was born on October 10, 1954, to Gemini Ganesan, a popular Tamil actor, and Pushpavalli, a Telugu actress. Rekha's career began as a child actress in Telugu films, and she has won a National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards.
Due to her upbringing, she found herself enveloped in gloom and pessimism during her formative years. However, an opportunity to debut in Bollywood emerged in 1970 with "Sawan Bhadon" opposite Navin Nischol, under the screen name Rekha. Her lack of fluency in Hindi, dusky complexion, and weight did not align with the typical assets favoured in the predominantly fair-skinned, Hindi-speaking North Indian actresses.
Determined to transform her circumstances, she embarked on a journey of self-improvement. A new and enhanced Rekha emerged through yoga, shedding excess weight, and mastering Hindi and dance. This revamped persona went on to deliver one box office hit after another, including "Nagin" (1976), "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar" (1978), "Mr. Natwarlal" (1979), "Khubsoorat" (1980), "Umrao Jaan" (1981), and "Khoon Bhari Maang" (1988), among others. In her later years, she transitioned to character roles, portraying mothers and even grandmothers, as seen in "Krrish" (2006).
Her slim and graceful appearance earned her numerous admirers, including esteemed Bollywood actors like Kiran Kumar, Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, and Amitabh Bachchan. In a 2004 television interview with Simi Garewal, she dispelled a longstanding rumour of marriage to Vinod Mehra, describing him as a well-wisher. She revealed that her sole marriage was to businessman Mukesh Aggarwal, whose tragic death left her a widow. Since then, she has chosen not to remarry. Currently, she resides in her self-owned bungalow in Bandra (West), Mumbai, with her secretary Farzana and pets.
Rekha has acted in over 180 films in a career that has spanned over 40 years. Throughout her career, she has often played strong female characters and, apart from mainstream cinema, appeared in art-house films, known in India as parallel cinema.
She has won three Filmfare Awards, two for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress, for her roles in Khubsoorat (1980), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), respectively. Her portrayal of a classical courtesan in Umrao Jaan (1981) won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Rekha rarely gives interviews, and she mostly avoids parties and events. In 2011, Rediff listed her as the ninth-greatest Indian actress.
