Try the same cooling experiment with a conventional mains powered fridge, I bet the timings wont be that much shorter to get your drinks down to 5 degrees
I've had mine for a few days now. I run it off the van cigarette lighter, it gets unplugged at the end of the day and turned on in the morning and, I find that you can chill 6-12 cans down to 5°C in about 30 mins. I did hesitate about the price but with the weather we've been having it has been well worth it. I can see it getting a lot of recreational use too!
Had large Halfords coolbox for years. Great product, especially if you add ice at £1 a large bag from anywhere. Keeps cold for days. This might be useful for very remote pretty extreme places but looks like a miss to me
An interesting concept. For cooling, and assuming you have your van on site, there are plenty of mini car refrigerators that would do a similar job for half the price.
Mate I don't know what I've done I've bought he halfords 50L rechargable cool box for £240 as it was on offer. It's just so big! Lol# I'm now thinking I'll get a smaller cool box that I can plug into 12v instead as I would like an inverter battery on my van. But I'm now looking at portable power stations and I'm thinking you could set the portable power station to charge off the van while its running, then you can use any 12v or AC equipment you want LOL HAVE I GONE MAD
I have a large heater/cooler box in the boot of my car, when I need it on cooler on hot days i force cool it with a couple of frozen cooler packs, to the lower the internal temp significantly and quickly, the cooler then just maintaines the the temp.
Great cooler. Take a 70mm pvc pipe. Cut a door with hinge and clasp into the pipes with glued end caps. Put the can in with ice and salt. Just keep rotating the pipe and the drink will chill super fast
I would have considered it if it charged the batteries and was a little cheaper as I a couple of Makita LXT products but this seems a little too expensive for a portable battery powered cooler
One thing to mention is this is a compressor fridge, but also uses Peltier for heating, hence the price it's not just a "cooler" it is in every way a actual fridge freezer
The professional series of 18v makita can have the batteries modified to fit the standard or lxt range of tools. Small tab gets in the way that can be removed if I remember right
Going by the label on the side, this IS NOT a Peltier fridge. It seems to be a compressor based fridge. Side label mentions refrigerant type of R-1234yf . So this has to be a compressor. It's used in car air conditioning, so what they have done here is shoved a car AC unit into a box .
£400 though !! Christ, Halfords do a 30 litre compressor cooler now for £220. Ok it doesn’t take batteries so has to be plugged into 12v but little over half the cost.
Price has put me off - I could get two huge cool boxes and load them up with ice and drinks for less! Like you say if it charged the batteries I might be more persuaded but as it stands it's £200 more than I'd be willing to pay for it
There have been some comments regarding the price, is that the Makita's price as there are distributors out there that buy in Makita bulk and sell at a substantially discounted rate. Also, any company out there would offset against tax

Company called badaptor do. I have makita tools but purchased the ryobi brad nailer, the badaptor lets me use the makita battery on the ryobi tool. They make it for different brands
@@frazer26 I have 2 of the ryobi 18guage brad nailors and they work great, also have the dewalt battery powered brad nailer as well but I don't like it as much cause it uses a brushless motor to spin up a flywheel or something to hit the nails instead of the ryobi which uses like a little compressor and is so much quieter as well. Also the dewalt comes with these 3 clear non marring tips that just fall off and I lost all of them in the first week...it also doesn't have a safety over ride like the Ryobi so you don't have to push hard on the material your shooting, I'm a cabinet builder and trim carpenter so I use these things constantly. You in the states or the UK?
@@smooth_ops2942 UK. Built a wardrobe at the start of lockdown and the ryobi was 1/2 the price and reviews were excellent. Could not justify the makita for a DIY project
@@frazer26 I haven't seen the makita one... I'm not the biggest fan of Ryobi but the nail gun is great. Ryobi does have alot of cool things that are battery powered though.

NOOO not ginster get a proper pasty. It sounds a great idea but the price is 5 times the one I got Halfords powered by van / car. I know it does have the battery option which is a big interest. I am makita user
I suspect the Halfords one won't cool nearly a low as this Makita one. They tend to take the temp down by 15 - 20 degrees below ambient so on a really hot day your drinks may not be as cool as you would have liked. However I do agree the price difference is big enough to offset this disadvantage.
Ha! I thought you were putting real thermocouples on the cans there.. For nearly half a grand it should make coffee too* AND charge your batteries! "Significant Investment" ? Yup *Yes I KNOW they do a coffee maker, but come ON guys, really, I'd rather spend my money to just, like, just drill drive and chop things ;)
would you voice your opinion why do they have two battery ranges? or you don't want to alienate sponsors? i would bet it's because of planned-obsolescence!
This isn’t sponsored and we are quite vocal on Makita products (see coffee machine review) The CXT batteries are a legacy platform and they haven’t allowed for the new XGT 40 volt.

much more efficient than pelter units.
More than likely more like a campervan compressor fridge , very efficient on 12v compared to ‘absorption’ type coolers.

If it's plugged into a 12v outlet and you turn you vehicle off, does it automatically switch over to 18 volt?
Good question - we will check this

How much time does the batteries last?
Can you pick a certain degree say -3 or -8 or is it all pre set to -18 0 and 10 degree
If you use the mains input will it also charge the batteries as well in the cooler

Got to allow for thermal mass..of the items you put in to be cooled..
Not good as a cooler, but great as a cold retainer.

Yup - that’s our conclusion
Who makes the compressor in this cooler?
I just placed an order for this for 613 USD. What you think at this price ?
Seems about the price we paid in GBP 🇬🇧
Great review thanks guys.
Why would my cooler have a battery charger on it? The point of using batteries is because you are remote from power. Why add the weight of a charger?
