I never heard Sprituals sang with this intensity and sumptuousness before. God Almighty Bless our Great Shirley Verrett.

This woman is truly one of the most underrated artists of the past 50 years! She could sing almost anything. Her artistry knows few limitations! Thank you for helping to add to my admiration of her!
Shirley Verette was not underrated at all. She was one of the bightest stars at the Met, and at Opera Houses worldwide!

One of the greatest singers ever! Someone once said that if God does listen to the songs we, men, made to praise Him, He certainly favours the Negro Spiritual. And now Shirley is singing for Him!
The UA-cam Continuum just turned up this. Oh. My. Gosh. I saw her live several times in Boston -- twice in *Aida,* once in *Otello* as Desdemona (I kid you not), and once in recital. Bostonians adored her.
I attended one *Aida* performance with my friend Brenda and one of *her* friends, a hardboiled music snob. Afterward, we were so shaken we could hardly speak. I said, "Where did those pianissimi come from?" Brenda's friend replied, "From Heaven." She was close to tears.
Thank you so much to share the magnificence of this sublime singer, a great Queen of our time infortunatly I never had the privilege to ear Her on stage!
I'd not heard her sing spirituals. Masterful. What a loss.
Glorious singing! You can feel the sorry, the sadness & the quite powerful in every phrase. It is a shame that many African Americans are ashamed of these songs and other spirituals like it because many have allowed sophistication or what they perceive as sophistication to consider this art form to be an insult when compared to where we as African Americans have come from. When in fact the spirituals are what got us through and are just one of the delicious facets in our rich heritage!

lei ha saputo portare nel campo musicale le sue origini con uno studio ...viscerale che ha regalato a tutto il suo repertorio lirico...sopratutto nella dizione...e nelle variazion... mai forzate...il suo pathos ed eleganza credo siano...un quid che completava il suo fascino.

This arrangement is by Julia Perry, and it might be hard to find now. Years ago, I had this arrangement, but someone borrowed it, did not return it, and I don't know who in the world it was!
