Disappointment can be dealt with by not going into experiences with expectations. Reality rarely matches up to your own fantasy, even in the small things like TacoBell or a venue, and all the more so for bigger things like changing countries.
Life is complex, just experience it as it comes. You'll be happier and experience wonder and satisfaction more often.
Beautiful monologue on daily life by the way, really enjoyed this vlog :)
Oooo I like this a lot!
Idk what you mean sis taco bell the only thing in life that hasn’t disappointed me
Very true. The best experiences I had where the ones where I had no expectations. (Except for gardens by the bay in Singapore, I had expectation but Gardens by the bay exceeded those expectations).
Damn.. This is what my parents said when they had me. Pretty much a disappointment.. then again they don't expect much.
Your life is boring if you don't have expectations in life
Hey everyone I just want to make things clear. I know it’s difficult to listen to longer stories and talking type videos. I kind of tune out sometimes as well. But like I said, a few times in this video, my experience moving to Japan is not like everyone else’s but there are some people out there who will have similar feelings when moving. I’m sharing my life and experiences in hopes that if you feel the same way, you’ll know how to deal with it. I completely understand whole heartedly that not everyone is the same 😆 I hope that makes sense.
おばさん、女優のヒラリー・バートンに少し似てるとかパチもんみたいってよく言われない?
You're videos are wonderful, thanks for sharing your perspective of life in Japan. It helps people like me who plan to move there someday!
Never tuned out once! Everytime I watch your vids I feel a sense of joy, excitement and curiosity as to what you will do next. You're easy on the eyes too beautiful 😘
Thank you.
I, for one, ADORE your realism and the authentic feel to your videos. So genuine and I truly feel as if I'm in Japan myself. So THANK YOU a million times :)
I love how you are able to bring a "real" feeling to your videos! So much time is spent on a lot of social platforms of people trying to sugarcoat everything, and have an image of perfection. With you I feel like you're able to connect with your viewer on a deeper emotional level because of how you speak, present yourself and provide a level of realism that not many people are able to. Thank you for sharing your time with us, and keep up the great personal growth and work you put into your every day!
Be You and Do You because its the only You, You got!
I hope I can continue doing that haha 😅
I know!!! This new style is very different from other J Vloggers! I'm really loving this series!
I recently subbed to your channel and am not disappointed. I've been toying with the idea to leave my job and move to Japan so your videos are very informative. I have been before and have a lot of international friends that live there... Keep up the amazing work!
Michael That’ll be a great move Michael! Hope you end up doing what’s best for you 😁
Create a routine and always look for the positive in your situation. Great advice!
Exactly
The whole concept of being able to decide who you want to be when you move is a huge draw for me. Right now, I don't really try to meet people, as I stick with a close group of about three or four friends from work; I usually don't do anything anymore that challenges me; and I'm not very active, partly because I have no reason to be and because I'm used to the American concept of living in as big a space as you possibly can, so you never really want to leave the comfort of your home. I plan on turning all these things upside down in Japan: I'd live in sort of a share house so my own personal space will be far smaller, so I'll have to socialize with the people who live around me; I'll be attending language school because it's both interesting to me but will be a huge challenge; and the desire to explore Tokyo as well as the need to regularly walk/commute all around the city will make me active, if only by necessity. But I think these changes are necessary to help me transition into the person I always envisioned myself being, so I'm so freaking excited for that.
I feel that! I studied abroad in Tokyo for 6 months and for a few weeks another time. While a location cant automatically make you a better person, achieving your goals & dreams & being in a place that constantly inspires you does. In the US I'm so uninspired that it makes me apathetic, i'm trying to change that cuz I wont be able to move to Tokyo for another year or 2 but I think how you set your life up matters a lot more than some people realize ^.^
Rooting for you! Go get that adventure
I really appreciate your positivity in face of "not what you expected". Yes I love people watching too.
Nice illumination. I think I'll visit Shiodome Station next month when I head over to Tokyo.
As for the two things:
1. Be the best version of yourself. Restart. Fresh new start.
2. Make a routine. Establish a routine/goal.
That and make the most out of unexpected or disappointing situations! Thanks for watching the video :)
I was just thinking, if you move to a new place, you don't leave your problems behind but bring them with you. They stay with you, you'll have to learn to live with them. A new place will allow you to put off a bit but not for ever.
This is so true. For a long time i thought i can escape my problems in Japan. But as soon as the initial superficial glitter fell off over the years it was the same thing just in a different location of the planet.
hmmm, yeah, I agree,... Japan is where I'll have to live but not really my first choice,... kind of a close second with associated problems ...
Hi, Kelly. I am new to your site and so far very impressed and love watching your videos. They are very informative and love the rawness of the experiences you share. I really want to work and live in Japan, I'm practically obsessed it, a little...that is. lol. Hope to see a lot more of your work and thanks for sharing. Oh, I realize my comment is late but figured you deserve to know you're awesome. :P …
Just started watching your videos and I got say my favorite part is hearing the Kingdom Hearts sounds, that’s just awesome
Yes, establishing a routine is great because it makes you feel like your day was more productive. I think moving to another country is hard because of the culture shock and it is even harder if you go alone like you did. I admire your courage.
Aww thanks!
I'll be honest, the thing I learned from this video is not about moving somewhere, but that disappointment is always around the corner, and you should make the best of it.
To be honest it's way past time for to learn this, but it's a very nice reminder
I love how your so real in your videos, sometimes you have make up sometimes you dont. Sometimes your having a great day, other times its terrible. I feel like you dont fake it all the time just because your vloging :)
Your videos have helped my wife a lot. We're moving to Munich, and I know what it'll be like and everything, but she doesn't. Getting your tips, and also seeing someone navigate a whole different alphabet, is really great for her. We didn't move for fun or anything, we literally can't stand America, but your videos really make things seem so much more normal, like life really does just move on.
I just recently stumbled upon your videos. I subscribed after binging the first few late at night, and all I can say is THANK YOU. I moved to Japan in 2011 and I left in 2013, I miss my old home SO very much. Your videos are taking me back and its fantastic! I hope to one day either visit, and hopefully with my children so they can experience what I got to experience. It really helped mold and change me as a person.
My vlog on this is coming out tomorrow ahah. Perfect timing!!
I love the little voice overs you added~ def ads a personal touch for sure!!! 🙌🏻♥️
Omg I’m so excited!!
I also really like the voiceovers! So cute
firstly I agree on the fact that a daily routine is very important as it makes us acknowledge the importance of internal locus of control when it comes to our comfort zone and second as you pointed out in episode 4 (park visit, monologue about close friends and family connection) and presented in this video, getting in touch with familiar faces has that cathartic effect, esp if you are in a foreign country which in turn makes it easier to adapt or spend time somewhere else than home. Thanks for sharing your life in Japan! Thumbs up :)
I live with my SO whose in the military. We move around every 2-3 years. I can agree the most difficult part is leaving family and friends behind and having to reestablish yourself with every move. You miss holidays with loved ones and left alone during deployments. You have to leave/start new jobs and say goodbye to friends you've just made. It's not easy, but you make the most out of every moment and soak up every amazing memory possible.
If I ever get to visit Japan 🤞 I would cry everyday from happiness for the beauty of that country. Disappointments can be found everywhere and anywhere, it all matters with what you do with that. ❤ You're so strong and great, I don't think you would have a problem coming up from it!
I’m Japanese and living in Sydney for 6 years. I haven’t been back for 3 years.
I feel nostalgia from your video and think you’re lucky having other countries friends in Japan.
Been working as a chef (which is different shift from 9-5 people) and spending time outdoor sports in Sydney make me feel alone sometimes.
Your technical ability of storytelling (editing, music, sound effects, graphics, etc) is really good. Even if the subject matter is not my style, the way you present it is very palatable. Also, your apparent honesty about some things (Aomori, etc) makes you more relatable. Hope you're happy providing this kind of content because you're pretty good at it.
I’m glad you’re enjoying this series and that you can relate!
I think the hardest thing about moving to Japan is the difficulty in finding a good career. If you're a foreigner, for a long time you can get pushed into a position where you teach English. I'm interested in moving full time on our VLOG, but even if we make an income from it, Japan will still require you to work a normal job. It's quite a pickle.
Ya I’m lucky my job gives me so much free time. But once you live here for over 5 years you can apply for permanent residency and don’t need a visa. But there are companies that will give you a visa as a youtuber as well. It’s tough for sure though.
@@KellyMorita I should've come here 5 years ago 😂😂 keep the good videos rolling out. The long-form is great
Sean and Nami Yes, I struggled with this as well but decided doing my own business. It's a solution for woman following their husband abroad.
LoveLyzKelly This is interesting... plz make a video. 1st I have heard.
@Sean and Nami > ... even if we make an income from it, Japan will still require you to work a normal job.
What do you mean by this? I've seen some foreign youtuber that just doing youtube as full time and didn't do "normal job". Is this some kind of new law in Japan?
I honestly love your videos. Your honesty, your way of always know who you are and the fact that you allow Japan to keep shaping you into always a better human being.
I moved out of my parents house ( in Florida) for the first time and went to Los Angeles.. it was so scary. and I quickly realized how much a giant 22 year old baby i was. 4 years later im still here and doing really well, glad I did it too. Growing hurts but its totally worth it.
Congrats on making a beautiful video. Love all the areas you visited and last hang in there. Life will throw a curve ball, but will make you stronger.
So fun to see you hanging out with all the other youtubers I watch!! ❤️❤️❤️
I love your narration voice🙌
Your life hacks are really great! Thank you for sharing them. I'm moving to Japan soon so I've been watching a lot of your videos and they've been helping a lot!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 💕
I'm coming back to Japan in 2019 to study abroad in Tokyo!!! Was stationed in Yokosuka from 2013-2015 and I've missed it so much since I left!
I just started watching your videos and love them! I’m going thru a hard time in my life and you cheer me up every time.
I love watching your videos! I think it helps to be grounded and actually consider what life in Japan (or anywhere else) can be in reality Vs our expectations!
I hope if I go to Japan one day IL be able to follow your hints and tips because they are so helpful!
It is always hilarious when I hear people in Japan talk about working out, I think I list 20 pounds walking everywhere! If you ever get the chance to go over by the navy base it was awesome.
Your videos are so chill. I watch it to de-stress
Never knew she was a twin. You learn something new about her in every video!
your videos are so relaxing, i'm loving it!
Can totally relate from one day having family close by then moving thousands of miles away and having to grow up. No one ever tells you what that's going to be like. A small heads up and hacks to copeing with depression would've been nice, alas you live and you learn. Love the episode.
Moved to Melbourne, Australia nearly two years ago to be with my bf. The hardest part was saying goodbye and tbh, i haven't made a lot of friends here and i think that's part of the reason i'm sad about being here. i love my bf and i think Melbourne is great. i even found amazing jobs here, but missing my friends, family, important events, BASEBALL!!!!... it's just a lot to leave behind. however i think moving here has made me stronger and i've grown so much. i'm still glad i did it because i know i would've always wondered "what if" and that is something i could never live with.
enjoying your videos! now continuing to watch the next ones :)
In 2013 I was 27 and having my first and only baby and you we're going to Japan... I wish I would have traveled before having a child. But, these videos help me live vicariously through your experiences lol so good enough until I can!
I think the most important thing isn't something you said but rather something you showed. It is important to have a support system, especially when moving somewhere so far away. You appear to have found a wonderful group of friends that look like they'll be there for you in times when maybe your family can't be.
Hello! I'm new in your channel and all I have to say is that it is awesome! I'm going to Japan in one year, and watching your videos makes me really excited. I know it will be hard, but I love going through new experiences. Thanks for uploading such amazing content; you are awesome; keep it up!
I just found your chanel some days ago and I just wanted to say that I really enjoy and appreciate your videos, especially your "girl abroad" videos. They are so well made and thought through, I recognize some of your experiences and struggles from when I lived abroad a few years ago. Your voice overs are always so soothing and comforting and I wish I had your videos to watch during those times. Thank you for sharing!
I love watching your videos! They are so calming and really give us an insight into your serene soul. Even when I am having a bad day your videos always calm me down and help me take a breath.
My life goal is to visit Japan many times, and it's really refreshing to see such a pure take on the country. You aren't trying wrap it in a bow and show us the most beautiful aspects of the country, your videos are just honest; and I love that about this chanel! So thank you for always staying true and for taking us with you on your journey and staying real with us! :)
you go girl!!!! coming to Japan this summer and gonna move there around next spring!! keep up the good work!
I like videos such as this. They allow others to see & hear what the vlogger went through and the viewer can gain some insight what they could possibly face. Glad you clarified that this was your experience and others can totally have a opposite time in Japan. That way you don't receive any repercussions.
It was nice that you were able to have some fun girl time with Sam, Jennifer & Arianna!
Btw - I love the post 5 year option for an opportunity at permanent residency.
I plan on visiting Tokyo in 2020! Seeing Japan has been a life’s goal for years and years haha
I really enjoy your videos. I'm not sure how I stumbled on them, but I love watching them. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
You’re welcome!
I've just applied for the JET Programme and, being completely honest, have not even properly considered my placement to be a potential challenge. I have lived overseas before but I knew exactly where I would be. These videos are fantastic because not only are you pointing out potential challenges but also possible solutions. Thank you!
I've worked in quite a few countries! My 1st job abroad (I'm from the UK), was in Germany when I was 21. Our working contract was for 6 days a week for 9 months, with no vacation time. It was a real shock moving abroad after living at home, but as there was a large group of us it made making friends much easier! I made sure to make friends outside work though, as working with people, living in the same house and socializing with them too, was sometimes a bit much! Lol. It was nice to escape and be with other people!
I've lived/worked in France, Belgium, Thailand, Portugal and Syria as well. Most of my time was in Germany though, and I love it there!
Take those disappointing moments and run with them. After all if you can take those and make something out of them you will be much better for it. Its an inevitable thing we are likely to experience throughout the course of our life. Learning to take the disappoint as it comes and laugh about it, learn something from it, or even embrace it is almost an essential part of life.
Second thing is to see the positives, even in the bad. I struggle the most with this one. Like how does one see those positive points when you are sad and down or upset. Its harddddd but totally doable, its like retraining your mind.
Thank you for this video! I just found you on youtube and now follow you on instagram as well. I love your videos, and would loveeee to pick your brain for more information about your experience as i hope to move to japan within the next year or so.
Any change can be confusing, frustrating and difficult. You're awesome for moving so far away from family and friends to live your dream. Culture shock and all, thanks for letting us share the journey. with you. What do you miss the most about the USA and how often do you visit your family back home? Look forward to more adventures.
I've been following a lot of jvloggers, and recently I found yours. I find your videos very relatable and genuine. Please keep up the good work. You've definitely gain a fan today.
Dope shit kelly. And I HIGHLY SECOND the giving yourself routine. I've been chasing that for the last 6 years in Japan.
I’m not perfect with my many jobs haha but I’m trying! We can motivate each other!
Only 5 mins in and you had mentioned depression. Girl. Yes. My husband was stationed in sasebo for 3 years. Of those 3 years my son and I went and lived with him for a year & 6 months. Thought living there would be an amazing thing. Which it was.. but my anxiety & depression got so much worse living there. So big props to you!!! ✨💕
I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm currently studying at university and I think my goal once I finish is to teach in Japan. It's a long way away yet but your videos are so informative and realistic which is great!
I love this series so much! After so many UA-camrs left Japan, I was afraid I wouldn't see good Japan videos anymore and then suddenly your channel appears :D
I also like people watching, seeing them happy. Live in the moment! Great job!
Enjoy what you bring to this world
Love the way you capture the essence of daily life with all its good and bad... And then sharing your personal thoughts and reflection on it. Keep them coming... 👍👍👍
Joking about a boyfriend who’s a photographer and look at you now. You mentioned it to the universe and you got him honey. I love your videos. I feel like I’m right there with you. I just can’t get enough. Happy engagement miss soon to be Mrs Kelly 🥰 ❤️
The lights are so beautiful!
I recently came across your channel and I’d like to say - I love it. I’ve only watched a few videos, including this one, but I enjoy the overall feeling it gives me. I watched a few videos last night and it just gave me a sense of calm and relaxation. I like your choice of music, sound effects, and overall video composition. Thank you for making these videos. 😊 ありがとございます。
I am a new subscriber to your channel and I must say I find your videos so far pretty cool I’ve never traveled to Japan or any other foreign country so by you sharing your experience makes me feel as if I am there so cool😊
Your voice is so soothing. Love watching the videos when unwinding from a stressful day.
I love your kiki delivery service blanket its very cute and the Christmas lights are amazing shots
First time I'm watching your video. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks for another awesome, genuine video. Recently found this gem of a channel and it has me psyched to get to Japan tomorrow.
Love your honesty, the"real life" here in Tokyo.
I can totally relate to what you are saying, especially about expectations versus realities. I'm also trying to look for the bright side, be positive.
Wishing you will have lots of wonderful and happy surprises coming in the future, perhaps starting today. Happy Sunday!
the one thing i've learnt during my time studying aboard and meeting/getting to know people or even living with friends in a same house is DO NOT have expectation(s) for anyone or anything in life (yes i do aware it sounds negative af). But really if you dont expect anything then you will probably live a better/happier life because you won't be disappointed (duh), at least that is how i think
I’m going to a language school in Kyoto and the program is 1 year. I’m super excited but I know that there will be moments that I’ll get anxious but since I have family close by I think I should be okay. This is going to be my first year living by myself and in a a country that I love. I love watching your videos recently to help me prepare for all the fun things that are coming my way!
-Hana
I am so happy I stumbled across this because I’m really going through all these things right now! I’m studying abroad in Tokyo for a year and honestly it’s all these really small mundane things that really sneak up on you.
Of course it's important to get yourself a fine routine that makes you organized & ready for everything.. starting fresh each day!.feeling less stressed & less messy through your life
As always it was lovely watching this..💛
Will be waiting for the next vid.🙌🏻
Love all the music you picked out for this video. Your editing in general is lovely as well. :)
Funny cause the dream guy you girls thought up who would take your Instagram photos/professional photos and edit them for you really did show up for you Kelly... Hope you have a wonderful time meeting your long distance love for the first time in LA!
Your videos helps a lot to get prepared mentally for moving to Tokyo. Thank you for making them!! :)
Love the background music, Love the advice, Love this channel. Seriously, keep it up, such an upbeat upload!
Hey! Watching your "Girl Abroad"-Series for several hours already and I love it!
Living on your own at a young age can be a little scary with family and friends close by. The further away your family and friends are the higher the scare factor. Routines definitely help ground you. I always wanted to visit Japan. I love their culture. You are so young and pretty, you have a long life of exploration ahead of you with a great start. I wish you well and hope you enjoy living in Japan. Have fun.
Thanks for the Tips @LoveLyzKelly I love to Visit Tokyo someday and check out the festivals. Great video by the way :)
Loved every bit of this vid !
Made my sat. Night, special !
Thanks !
I really need to establish a routine again in the morning. It's so easy to just want as much sleep as possible, especially with a 3 year old in the house. But you never feel rested when you spend your day rushing, and the anxiety is so exhausting.
Although I lived in Japan about ten years ago, I experienced a very similar first year teaching English in an International school. It was very isolating and I didn't learn enough Japanese to make friends where I was located. Although I was prepared to live on my own, I definitely didn't set proper expectations ahead of time. By the time I moved to Tokyo I had learned and changed so much as a person that I was much happier with my day to day. Routines also help so much! Perhaps if I return someday in my mid 30's my journey will be very different!
Also, I'm incredibly jealous of people who can travel to japan with smartphones nowadays! I had to carry a dictionary everywhere and got lost many times. Internet wasn't all that fast yet and I had to go to my school to even get access to it.
thank you so much for sharing your honest feelings! i experienced similar feelings when i first moved out on my own. its true having a schedule or routine helps. good for u.
I think being away from home is one of the hardest things you can experience, as it should be since you are leaving behind where you grew up and where most of your memories took place. There is no way you can be ready for that, it's just something that can't be taught, and although you are having exciting new experiences you always feel like there is a part of you missing. I moved away from home 5 years ago, I'm now living alone in a different country and I've realized that even when sometimes I didn't feel like going out, maybe because I didn't feel completely comfortable with the language, or maybe I just wanted to be alone for a day I ended up feeling even worse. One day I meet a guy who told that he simply can't be alone, he would go crazy, start overthinking and worrying about things that were ok and then I clicked, I isolated myself for so long that I felt completely apart from this country's culture, maybe I didn't have friends because I assumed everyone would only think I was a foreign that couldn't express himself right. I started doing things that I always mocked people for, chitchatting with strangers, going to those lame seasonal events at the square, hanging out with the few friends I had, forcing myself to go out and never stay inside unless I was sick or tired. It took 5 years to realize what I put myself through, 5 years to start living again. I've grown so much, so much more that I thought I could. I believe it was really hard because I experienced two huge phases at once, how to be a grown up and moving to a different country. To everyone who is going through this, don't you think for a second cancelling plans last second, or thinking dating in another language is just out of boundaries. Go put yourself out there, live your life, never forget where you come from and be grateful.
Hello, I recently found your channel and I’m loving your new series where you share your experiences with complete honesty. I’m currently studying Japanese at my university and was looking into the Jet Program as my way to get into Japan!
Do it! It was worth an amazing life.
Yes, I love it when you take us to places!
Such a nice video. Ur friends are so funny. Ty 4 sharing👏✌️
That was a wonderful video. I agree with what you mentioned. They are life hacks and very useful. Routine is something that I can implement.
I’m not perfect but I’m trying!
your videos are always so calming and insightful ^^
This remixed Ghibli music is so relaxing!
I loved the music so much! Can't wait for the next upload!!~
You just feel positive in these vlogs I love it ❤
Speaking as someone who grew up in a U.S. Foreign Service family, one of the most basic building blocks -- for me, the actual foundation -- of living overseas (and I suspect pretty much anywhere even in your "home" country) is to not worry about rebooting your life, but rebooting your idea of "home." It's not where you came from and it's not necessarily where you grew up, but it IS where YOU decide it is, and deciding that where you've moved to is "home" (even when feeling homesick, or scared, or confused) makes all other adjustments smaller & easier. The more one concentrates on the feeling of being away from home, the farther away & more isolated one feels; the more one concentrates on the feeling of being home where one has chosen to live, the more rooted & comfortable one becomes. (The caveat, of course, is that if one can't get over that feeling of being a stranger in a strange land no matter how hard one tries... well, you're probably not where you belong and some soul-searching is in order.)
i recently subbed and honestly im in love. there is something so relaxing about you and your videos. i love it! i reaaaally enjoy the vlogs. and btw you are gorgeous and i LOVE your smile :) ♡
Trello is great--I use it for work stuff--but if you want a more "fun" version, Habitica is a way to gamify your daily routine/habits/stuff you need to do and make it more enjoyable. You create an avatar, and you gain or lose points based on whether you do the tasks you've assigned yourself.
I love these videos since Im planning to move to japan after college
Good luck!
I love your videos, you are so honest and open!!
Neat video! I've been to Japan twice. Once for a ~5 month study abroad to Nagasaki. The biggest life hack there is figuring out how to properly deal with garbage in every situation, haha. The second for a week in Tokyo. The biggest life hack for that one was to not use luggage that isn't completely waterproof because someone must have had bottles of wine in their bag that shattered above my bag. That seeped into my vinyl rolling duffel bag, destroying a good amount of my clothes I had brought.
16:02 I would have been like "WTF" too. HAHAHAHA! Their faces are priceless.
Thanks for making these great vlog. We are living through you, in a way. Great work.
