we did this many times in the mid 60s in a 1937 Ford 10. The run to Tophouse, spending a couple of nights in the hut at lake Tennyson and on the way back we would go down the Awatere
Gr8 video!!!!! Takes me back to late November 1987, me and a couple of mates travelled down from Wellington to Christchurch then headed up to lake Coleridge....we travelled in a series three up Mathis river (I think) to a hut opposite the amphitheatre valley!!!! Lake Coleridge was white cold in colour!!!! We were in for three days!!!! Dinner on the first night was Thar steaks 🥩 The most delicious meat I’ve ever eaten!!!! Second night was salmon steaks..... again bloody brill!!! Third night was saveloys!!!! From the Ritz to the pits!!!! Also it bloody snowed over night on the final night!!!! Then we bounce down the river and back to civilisation!!! Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿🏉
Its a cool wee track - went in there Show weekend last year. You weren't very far from the hot pools - 5 minute walk from those posts. Some one had pulled one of the posts out so you can drive on a short bit further now.
I was born, lived and worked all my life in London until my Irish wife said about moving to Ireland to the village her family are from. I thought the scenery in Ireland was amazing but you guys, well, it simply cannot be said enough times: your scenery there is simply out of this world. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us and those drone shots are just the icing on the cake! Cheers
Thanks so much. We truly are lucky in this country. I'm planning a trip that will take us past 2 locations where they shot some of Lord of the rings.... Stay tuned 😉 😎
My wife and I drove through Molesworth Station a few summers ago. It was a stunner of a day and something I would recommend everyone who can, does. Given a suitable vehicle of course.
The similitude with Puerto Aysen, in the Patagonia of my country is awesome, start my working day at home office with your videos, currently have some bleeding issues in my Series III.
Greetings from Indonesia. I learned how to drive when I was 12 in my father’s 1975 Series 3. Now I own a 1979 Series 3 and a 2014 Defender 110. So I really enjoy watching your video. Thanks for sharing your experience and that amazing landscape, Bro.
Thanks so much Galuh. My story is similar. I learnt how to drive in this Land Rover when I was 15. If you can drive an old Land Rover, you can drive anything!!!
My backyard there. Glad DOC put those posts in to protect the 2 flattish camp areas from becoming rutted bog holes. It's only a 2 minute stroll down to the pools but don't tell everybody!
DOC put the posts in to stop 4wds playing in that wet spot and making a mess ! you could only go another 30mtrs, it is only a short 5mins walk to the pools. The road goes a few k's past the hut.
Hi Hayden, that was another great ride along, thanks for ' taking' me with you, I hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year
Thanks for video Hayden. I love it in that neck of the woods. I would rather camp out like the guy at Scotties Camp Hut too for the reason that I often need to get up to go to the toilet a couple of times at least during the night so I don’t want to disturb the rest of the hut. Of course on the other side of the coin, the loudest snorer I ever heard was in a DOC hut.
Another good vid Hayden, your nephew will be picking up some good driving skills off you, must catch up and show you some photos of my old 2A that I had back in the early 1980,s
I envy you - so reminds me when hubby & I, 3 boys always took off to Keneperu Sounds to go camping - family own Land there and it was awesome too., Kids all grown up with their own kids all in Aussie but keep the videos' coming please Hayden I still love the outdoors. Cheers.
Disco IIs can be had cheap in America because the gas V8 they put in them for this market sooner or later has head gasket problems. It was so bad that Land Rover dropped the Discovery name and called the next two series LR3 and LR4.
Often wore ear protection taking my 2.5 NA diesel Defender on the motorway. When you pressed the accelerator at 65 she didn't get any faster, just louder!
Hey Hayden! - Thanks for the great videos. I'm visiting from the UK in a few months. ....Sadly can't bring my Landy, but will be in a hire truck. Any guidance on a few easy tracks to check out please? (experienced driver, but nothing too crazy, as we'll be on our own) - Cheers! :)
Sorry for the late reply. It's up edwards river. Near the Clarence river. You need to contact DOC for the key number to unlock the gate at the start of the track.
@@hayden_jones I get it. I've been into UA-cam stuff for a while. It's not easy. I hope we keep seeing vids from you and I especially hope we get more snow vids. They're awesome!
Well we went in there in February we went over that saddle the track goes to the right for 3 or 4 k’s and down to the river we camped the night in there the track was good you can tell there has been a machine in there that has touched up the track because there are bee hives in there it’s a big area
Hey Hayden, was the gate code protected or could you drive straight in to the edwards valley? Great video by the way, love seeing the landies in action

I've been up through there on the motorbike, such beautiful scenery and a bloody fun trip.

Thank you for Sharing.
South Island last place visited, Love to be First place to return.
Stunning Island!

It's where they belong 🙂

Great photography. Thanks Hayden.

Much appreciated. More to come.
i like your spirit... 'wonder where that track leads?' then you proceed to find out. Great stuff bloke.

Beautiful part of the world. Looks a lot like British Columbia and Alberta where I drive me '68 and '64. thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much. Don't forget to subscribe 😀🙏
Love the scenery, one place in my bucket list to visit!
You should! I'll definitely be going back there at some stage, so I can actually check out the hot pools !!

Gotta love the disco on road tyres😂
Thanks for the video mate. Champion.
No worries mate. Hope you liked it ! 😃
Oh man, you were so close to the hot pools. Definitely worth to check it out next time !
Yeah I definitely will !!
Another fantastic video. The 2 drone shots at the end are amazing. Well done.
Thank you very much Frank. Yeah i wish i put those drone shots at the beginning of the video !!
Great video, the Stampers were something else. There are a few in Tasmania but the second lot you fellas saw was stunning.
Cheers.
Yeah, there's a few up that way. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to check them all out.
Ah what! I've always wanted to go there, farmers must've put those posts in... great vid though mate, your nephew will be hooked for life now
Thanks mate. Yeah I was gutted seeing those posts !!
Yeah you're right about my nephew!! He loved it.
Not farmers. Its public land. DEPT OF CONSERVATION put them in
Exelentes vehículos 4x4 ....para disfrutar de la naturaleza
Muchas gracias 🙂😀
Awesome stuff. My Landy has only been in 4wd for about 3 days in the last 18 months, bloody UK 😆
Move to NZ, and bring your Landy with you !!!

Hey again super video.
nice land rover series and i like view
Thanks 👍🏽 😊
Looks like my Series 2A! Notice how the two vehicles negotiate ruts and rocks differently.
Yeah the difference was huge. The disco's traction control works so well. A luxury series vehicles don't have !
Great video. 😀
Great video !! Would love to check out the natural hot pools one day.
Same !! 🤣

Hi bud did you do the toyota conversion?
Did you use a 5 speed toyota box aswell?
Are you running a power steering box aswell?
Hi Matt, no the conversion was done over 27 years ago, before my dad bought it. It's running a Toyota celica gearbox. No power steering 🙁
What maps you looking at ?
Cheers
It's called NZtopo50
There's 2 versions, 1 for the South Island and one for the North Island.
The cost is around $7, I think. Highly worth it.
One of the most satisfying offroading/adventuring channels on UA-cam. You'll get big one day!

Not 100% sure, we turned around at Charlie's saddle.

What engine is in the old truck??
It's a Toyota B
3.0ltr Diesel engine
How much petrol do you take with you on your trips
I always take a spare 20 Litres of diesel with me.
probably woken up the neighbours.. leaves it idling
Gotta warm the old girl up mate 😁
