Hey Jake, this isn’t something I usually do, but I was wondering if you ever struggled with severe shame from struggling with a disability? How did you deal with that? I’m also really anxious about accepting any sort of money for it…
People love helping, and I was always taught that giving people a specific list of ways they can help you makes them feel really valued and helpful. Idk it's been healing to feel loved by strangers. I used to have a church lady come over and cuddle my baby so I could shower. It was great
I know this isn't directed at me, but I've felt that way so maybe I can offer a positive perspective? I've definitely felt that shame for a lot of reasons, partly because I felt like a burden when asking for help, partly because of societal standards I felt I didnt meet. But its important to remember that our ability to do things for other people or our productivity from a capitalistic viewpoint does not define our worth as humans. Theres so much more to us than society will have us think. For me, I felt like I was taking without being able to give back but I was reminded I do give back in my love, my words, personality, compassion, perspectives, art, and so much more. So where I was seeing it as me just taking, others saw it as a chance to give back the love I show them. You're giving to the people you love more than you even realize.
As a disabled person finally learning to accept myself, I’d say the things you’re incapable of don’t define you as a person. You’re still you and being disabled doesn’t separate you from anyone else
