It's the technical part of my brain that won't let me fully enjoy this version. I get transgender and accept it fully, it's just the anatomy bits/making love that play with my head. Looking at it from one way, David was born a boy in a girl's body, excuse me a gay boy, so he wants surgery to gain boy anatomy, but in the mean time he still has a vagina, breast, attracted to boys, and Matteo is a boy who's confused whether he's gay or not ends up attracted to what he thinks is a normal boy, but he's actually attracted to another female so they are both still in a hetero relationship having hetero sex technically. It's a lot to wrap your head around, for me anyhow, I can understand why str8 ppl have an even harder time accepting it all. It's a lot to absorb. Add from what I've seen of both m2f & f2m sex changes, it's easier or I mean comes out looking more accurate and functional for m2f than it is f2m. They barely get a pinky size stubby that just doesn't look or work the same as a normal penis. I wonder why they can't use donors like they do with heart transplants etc. To get a real one. They can attack everything else no? There's 2 more angles to look at it but too much to explain. It's fascinating, yet mind blowing. Even for a gay dude like me. That's gotta be a hard life to live in many ways.
It's regrettable that they didn't address Mateo's confusion when he asked whether he can label himself as gay since knowing David is transgender. He is gay. He is in love with a boy ('who just have to try harder to be a boy'). Would've been nice if the 'gay guru' has mentioned this when they had the talk. Anyway, when it comes to the 'technicality' of sexual intercourse between them, I guess the whole point of never pointing it out aside from it's a teen show is that it really is the business of the people involved. I mean would you ask a transgender how they have sex? No.
