Conveniently, this mostly happens to Afroindigenous folk like me, pale-skinned indigenous folk, and Indigenous people who just aren't trotting out regalia for every TikTok or look like they're from the Plains region.

Then in the 1920s, when Tut’s tomb was opened there was a resurgence in everything Egypt and women started copying that “cat eyeliner” from ancient Egypt. Look up Josephine Baker. Then in the 1960s there was another real resurgence with the addition of false eyelashes. Thick cat eye liner was a convenient way to cover up the base of the falsies. Look up Sophia Loren or Marilyn Monroe. And who’s to say there weren’t other cultures who used that style between ancient Egypt and the 1920s? I'm 100% white, but, well--i started watching anime at 6, and i got into Japanese culture, followed by Korean and Chinese--i joke that I'm a weeb but with full understanding of how absolutely gross and toxic a lot of weebs can be. So obviously my experience is in no way comparable to yours, but a lot of aspects of Asian culture have been very normal to me for a very long time. I'm 30 years old and in my lifetime it has been baffling to watch people's attitudes towards various cultures change, particularly watching Japanese culture come over and suddenly become this elitist thing, with all these white people acting like experts. I've had my own brother and his wife mock me for preferring nigiri over the "exciting" Americanized rolls they prefer. I've eaten rambutans and canned lychee and gotten disgusted looks only for them to be telling me about this cool fruit they found online a few years later.
It has been wild to watch, even just as this third party viewer who just likes to learn about other cultures. Intellectually i understand like, oh the unknown is scary. But really, what unknown? It's just people. People from the other side of the world so of course they're different, but people all the same. I suppose I'm proud that i exposed myself to other cultures and proud of my upbringing that I'm...tolerant of differences? But gods. Could the bar be any lower? It's infuriating every time i hear of someone bullied as a child for their culture, because it's unacceptable that basic tolerance is so rare that not even one person was around to beat the snot out of those racist bullies. Because I'm thrilled to say i absolutely never let that happen around me and it's baffling that so many did. I once grabbed a boy and ah--i didn't actually say anything i just death glared him, then very loud told my friend to let me know if anyone said anything like that to her again lmao. I was pretty notorious so, well. Hopefully she would've told me if anyone did. It's so...incomprehensible to me that so many people choose complacency.
Ugh. Anyway. Hopefully this isn't like--i don't want to be talking over you or anything. Just....even as some dumb little weeb, I've seen this absolutely atrocious behavior as people go from negative racism to....positive racism? With a boatload of cultural appropriation and all sorts new and exciting grossness that i hope is at least marginally better but like. It's still pretty freaking bad. And they'll be having boba and sushi and then start talking shirt about Japan or something like. Be so for real right now!!!!! Or they'll infantize and entire culture like they're all innocent woowoo babies!!!! Everyone's just people why is this so hard!!!!!!!
But don't worry guys. Supreme court said there's no more racism!

Some people are really doing too much with it, but most people are just trying to participate in a trend rich wealthy influencers and celebrities generally get away with and praised for.
Like that one girl’s post in Reddit who had the wing and inner corners in black liquid liner. No, honey, you’re not Asian fishing. But that eyeliner REALLY is not for you simply because it doesn’t suit your features. Everyone’s eyes and the balance of their other features are individual, regardless of race or ethnicity. Even the makeup East Asians are doing rn on social media is just the current trend and isn’t going to suit every individual Asian person’s face.
And I think when someone is wearing another culture’s popular but not extreme style and get accused of racefishing or racebaiting, the accusers are just jealous that particular style doesn’t naturally suit their features but suits that other person.
I remember doing straight Korean eyebrows a few years ago because at the time the only trendy alternative was Western super arched eyebrows. In hindsight, neither actually suited me even though the Korean brows were better. If I’d bothered to study my face and step outside of what’s trendy sooner, I would’ve realized I need a slight gentle arch added. But it took the East Asian trends diversifying for me to realize that. Same with my lips, I was using dark brown liner because that’s what was trendy in the West on full lips and the alternative was sharply demarcated Asian gradient lips which didn’t suit me-in hindsight neither suited me. Took trends diversifying for me to realize single color blurred gradient with my natural darker pigmentated edges looks best on me. People need to 1. Do what looks good on them regardless of trend or origin of style 2. Stop throwing baseless accusations at people out of jealousy 3. Stop looking at ethnic groups as a monolith and dig deeper into who is doing what technique and why. E.g. Is this style of eyeliner because of the monolid? Oh. Well, what are people of this see ethnic group but with double eyelids doing? What about triple eyelids? Round eyes? Narrow eyes? How does that relate to my features? Etc.

Even if the person wants to do their makeup in a way that knowingly "makes them look more asian", its still a non-issue unless theyre outwardly trying to CONVINCE people they are. I sometimes get confused as Wasian or asian passing, despite only being a quarter. At times I will further accentuate my features in a way that makes me 100% look mixed, but thats only because of a style I happen to like and choose to use on my face. I know exactly what it does, but theres no intentional misdirection at all, and people would see that if they properly interacted with me -.-

many eastern europeans have asian looking features from the hunnic, mongol, scythian conquests back in the day. even if you friend is 100% bulgarian, it is so normal for bulgarians to have that type of dna that it's considered standard.

@chegu613 That's definitely true. But it's still seen as a rarity here to have asian looking features. Both me and my friend have often been mistaken for foreigners by other Bulgarians on multiple occasions. But I guess the only way to find out the full truth would be a DNA test. Plus a lot of Bulgarians outright deny the fact that there's Asian presence in our ancestry, for some reason they find that as "insulting". It's just weird, ya know. Especially considering that Bulgaria's location is pretty much on a crossroad between so many different ethnicities. It's like the locals forget that we're actually more ethically diverse than they like to believe. Not to mention the big minority of Romani people here, or the fact that our lands were under the Ottoman empire for roughly 500 years.

@ that’s not what the term means.
Racial fetishizing EXCLUSIVELY-means the sexual associations based on race beyond a mere preference which everyone has.
Aka “yellow fever” for Asian fixation.
That example about skin color is not a crime. It is simply someone who had a stereotype about what a Korean looks like from limited contact. It’s the no different then the brilliant comedian Ronnie Chieng saying Indians are not Asian not realizing that north West Indians have racial “Asian” features (race is no longer biologically recognized) but Asian becomes a bizarre geographical context too broad to mean anything.
And concepts like modern borders are not the limits of culture or retired forms of human taxonomy.
You may also be experiencing internalized racism where there are East Asians and yes Asians will tell other eastern Asians you must not be Korean, Japanese etc because of skin color…
Fun fact as someone devoted to East Asian History or more specifically north East Asian studies I am tired of of westerners and Americans specifically who hear anthropological terms do not research it beyond an American centric view that white is bad and off white is always the victim of the other and topics can never be nuanced unique nor require clarification beyond stereotypes you learned in tiktok…
let me guess you get your exposure on these issues from tiktok and read nothing beyond?! The world is not black and white and Asians have been serving stereotypes about skin color purity and being civilized well before the Europeans arrived.

Yeah I'm also Latino or at least mixed with it as I'm also half white but people always try to fight on behalf of other people's races and think "these people of this particular race must be offended by this so I'm gonna defend them on their behalf" but like 90% of the time it's just some white dude/person getting offended for Mexicans and it's like we could care less because latinos learn to have a thick skin from a young age and can learn to take a joke unlike some people who clearly can't. I see people wear sombreros and do I get offended, nope. Is it a bit stereotypical to assume all Mexicans or Latinos wear sombreros or ponchos or eat tacos or eat tortillas or eat spicy food or eat frijoles or are full blown brown or that they all fully know Spanish and speak it all the time. Plus also have mariachi band music that they dance around to doing the salsa like nope not all Mexicans/Latinos do those things or like those things. It's a stereotype and it can be true for some things or some people but not everyone and yet people who are again most likely white people or not Mexican/Latino themselves will get offended on our behalf for crap we don't care about and are literally ok with. I mean I literally eat at Taco bell and it's white as all heck not even authentic at all but I don't get offended that the food isn't fully authentic like girl I already knew that but i still like it anyways. Plus I see so many people make fun of Mexicans in movies, shows, books, games, real life, UA-cam maybe for a skit or a joke and it's not meant to be taken seriously or personally like why should I get offended by things that don't matter. It's all stupid. I don't fight on behalf of other people's races as that's also stupid. I just live and take everything as a joke and I laugh because laughing and not caring is good for the soul and frankly more people should do it more often. I don't know why white people get all butthurt for Asians or any other race when they can't even relate to them so why do they even care so much? 🤷🏽‍♀️😑

Woww I never realized just how crazy this whole topic is to think about. Especially, concerning looking like another race. Even though i’m a black woman, I get a lot of comments asking if im blasian, a pacific islander, and/or middle eastern. Particularly when I wear my hair straight or naturally wavy, its almost always someone trying to TELL ME what I am. Even after I state I’m simply black (okkk I did find out im a third scandinavian via ancestry DNA, so that’s probably where my complexion/eyes come from), its like people accuse me of lying or assume me to be something else. I tend to where my hair now in very distinctive “black hairstyles”, such as braids and twists, to reduce this (also I genuinely love them haha). Which I think sucks, as I want to be able to express myself fully as a black woman - without being seen as potentially asian-fishing or claiming to be something I KNOW I’m not. Also, it’s weird bc I can tell people (guys mainly) almost like the fact that I look racially ambiguous - which is both offensive and disgusting to fetishize in general 🫠😂. It’s definitely made it easier to weed out men who only want to date a woman who doesn’t look “too black” for them!

I will admit I do get wary when people say they’re into Chinese, Korean, or Japanese culture, I’ve gotten way too many weird comments about East Asian people not to be, but I can tell real fast when people genuinely are interested in the language and culture and not just fetishize it. And if people do take offense to that, they’re not people worth interacting with.

The thing with Lerowillberunningaround being accused of Asian fishing was wild because like… she’s so Korean her descriptions were in Korean and back when that video blew up I remember seeing a tiktok account claiming she “used google translate” because “if you reverse translate her descriptions you can barely understand them”. And I swear I thought I was going crazyyyyy because the reason they couldn’t translate properly it’s because Lero’s Korean if so fluent it’s full of slang and onomatopeias or other common use of their mothertongue, like when you say wassup instead of what’s up. That account vanished as soon as that video became somewhat relevant but it was so crazy to think someone put that much effort just to lie and blame a Korean if not actually being from said country.

Wow. None of my reasons for not having Tik Tok involved my ethnicity before, but now I know I'd be torn apart on that platform. I'm south Asian, Scottish and nordic. I've got my south Asian parent's eyes and hair, and my white parent's nose and skin tone. I used to get bullied for looking like "an Asian girl who's had nose and eye surgery". I think I'd get accused of asianfishing even without makeup on! Why are we backsliding into defining people with ethnic clichés, instead of accepting that people are infinitely variable?

I had a friend with blond hair, blue eyes, and looked like Barbie. I just assumed she was white until I saw her mom one day, who was very clearly Asian. (I believe her mother was 1/2 and she was 1/4).
Incidentally, that was also the day I was introduced to Hi-Chews by my friend! This was shortly before they hit the American market, so the little packages had Japanese writing on them.
Overall, you don’t really know anyone’s race(s) until you ask.

A quarter is significantly more than a drop, and it's kind of ridiculous to treat quarter-mixed ppl like they're the same as those who play up a ~5% mix (@ that one commenter). I'm 1/4 korean myself and it really depends on the person as to whether I 'look asian'. I've had a lot of people straight up ask me or weirdly assume which asian country I'm from (this older white dude customer went "arigato, right?" at the end of the checkout 😭 and I've had other odd stuff like that happen). For others I probably pass as fully white. Trust that a lot of people already contend with their 'not white enough, but not x enough either' mixed identity without others being weird about it too! Regardless, other people's perception doesn't change mine or anyone else's background.

6:50 Girl that's called a cat eye liner. Eyeliner is DESIGNED AND MEANT to change the shape of your eye. Assuming that a specific eyeliner style is intended to make an eye look "Asian" feels racially ignorant, like you said Asian people don't just have one eye shape.
Eyeliner has existed in countless cultures ever since humans decided to start applying pigment to their faces. Gatekeeping any eyeliner style as only for one race, only indicative of one race, or only intended to emulate a specific race feels racist as fuck to me.

Whenever I wear aegyo or douyin makeup people ask if I'm Asian fishing. Makeup isn't supposed to be gatekept by cultures, it's meant to be shared and I'm literally Asian. Im not trying to claim that I'm Korean I'm just doing makeup that I like. It just sucks because I'm just trying to be me, I can't change my race or ethnicity. And if people tell me I'm trying to make my eyes look the certain way most Koreans make them I literally would just walk away bc my eyes are almond shaped. Its so ridiculous 😭

there's a clear difference in context between people who just wanted to try modern asian make up trends, people who shaped their entire look, personality, mannerisms, lifestyle, and even manifestations to "become an asian", and people who accessorize the asian look by covering their natural features to make themselves look asian.
the difference between the three is that the 1st one is not supposedly an issue.
ironically despite the false accusations on the 1st people, the 2nd and 3rd are seemingly being praised in tiktok and ig more.

I have lived in China and Japan and have worked with MANY SEA people. Everyone of them was happy whenever I want to learn their language and about their culture. They have always been very happy to help me whenever I had trouble understanding anything. In fact, I was forced to wear a kimono and dance at a Japanese festival (I cannot dance and didn't want to wear the kimono lol). The old ladies loved making me dance (their freaking stamina is unreal). China and Japan also were very keen on getting me to try every food they could think of. Honestly, most people just wanted to share their way of living with others. As long as you don't pretend to be someone or something you aren't, I don't think you'll have an issue.

I don't think some of these people think about what their point of view says about their attitude and the way they view other people.
What kind of upbringing would you need to have, in order to think that not only are you the arbiter of what is good and right in the world, but you also decide (based on absolutely nothing) what other people think and feel about things that might affect them?
The lack of self awareness is pungent.
