I remember being like 14 years old when this match happened that little run was significant in Rugby 🏉 as we never saw many Speedstars like Howlett and Robinson go against each other
Pause around 0:40 you can compare the distance the players have from the goal post, and clearly Robinson is atleast 12-15 metres closer to the goal post. Now when you measure the circumference between the two players and the distance they would have to run to score near the corner post, it's pretty much even. If it were anyone else, Robinson would've caught them but it was none other than Dougie Howlett.
In Rugby 08 Howlett's speed are rated at 95 whilst Robinson's are at 92, Bryan Habana at 94, Breyton Paulse at 95 and Rydell, Rocokoko at 91, Rupeni at 97 and a Japanese winger...
Over 20-30m I'd back Robinson due to his acceleration off the mark (note in this Howlett runs onto the ball at pace and this makes a big difference), but anything over that then Howlett every day of the week
I'm a kiwi, but I'm sure if the roles were reversed Jason Robinson would have scored in that situation also. Saying that, when Howlett was at his peak he was rapid, he had great rugby instincts, and importantly his timing was deadly accurate.

What a stupid headline , Robinson was no where near Howlett when Howlett received the ball. THis is not a one one one. Superman wouldn't have caught Howlett from that starting point. The fact is Howlett did not burn Robinson in this play
@DavidHURST1 How are you not getting this. They are the same distance from the corner. Howlett is closer to the touchline by 20m, Robinson is closer to the try line by 20m. The corner is in between, meaning the 20m cancel each other out. And looking at it, Howlett doesn't even go all the way to the corner, meaning Robinson has 5m less to run than Howlett, Howlett is also carrying a ball (slowing him down), yet Robinson still doesn't get near him. Pause at 0:40!! GO LOOK AT THE STATS WEBSITE!!!
@DavidHURST1 the angle's confusing you. Robinson may be 20m away from him to the side, but he's also 20m further back than him, meaning that in the time it would have taken Howlett to run 20m forwards, Robinson should have had time to cover those 20m sideways. Howlett is faster.

At ua-cam.com/video/FwUkFz3e8mk/v-deo.html when you freeze the pic you can see Robinson has him covered and should have easily tackled him. However Robinson had not fully recovered from being in the ruck a few second earlier which affected his chase.
@tennisrulesok We're still going on about this? Howlett has to run a good 60m diagonally, Robinson has to cover about 30-40m, Howlett beats him easily. It's closer than the commentators make it out to be. But he still beats him. Robinson's faster over 10m, Howlett's faster on anything over that.

Dougie Howlett sure was one quick Tongan
Some of the argument on here are quite funny to read! Basically Howlett was faster than Robinson, end of story. HOWEVER Howlett couldn't hold a candle to Robinson in terms of acceleration, agility and beating a man one on one. In fairness to Howlett, I don't think there has ever been anyone as lethal one on one (Lomu doesn't fall into this category, as he didn't so much as beat men, rather chewed them up and spat them out! Lol).
no he wasnt howlett had more distance to run it showed it on tv
Robinson does have to cover the width of the pitch though...
@bingsarac9 dude dougie caught the ball on the half way line and ran approximately 60 meters to where their paths crossed while robinson was 35 meters from the side line and ran at an angle where he ran for approximately 50 meters. their is no debate. look at the pitch dimensions you will see they showed it on tv and mapped it out. stop the video at 1.09 thats where you will see you are wrong dougie had a further distance to run
robinson didnt even get burned, if you look on the replay, robinson was on the far side the pitch from where the ball was passed and still caught up with howlett, if there was extra 20 meters robinson would had him, but good try from new zealand! :D
