Found some Turkey Tails in Cumbria U.K 😃lookin forward to making this, thank you so much for such a fun easy to follow video; how many drops of tincture do you take?
Great video. I'll tell you my method for turkey tail alcohol extraction. I clean the mushrooms, trim where attached to the log, pop into a high speed blender with some chicken stock and a shot of white wine or sherry. Blend for about a minute, toss in a pot and thicken at a slow boil. Add some heavy cream and whatever else you want and you'll have the best cream of mushroom soup ever. I know they are medicinal but they work great blended into soup. Their flavor is very similar to oyster mushrooms- mild and pleasant- not woody or fibrous at all. You don't need to blend 100%. The bits that don't get blended become soft. I collect a bunch in July- clean, dry and toss in the pantry. I pull out whenever I want a quick bowl of great tasting soup.
Keith - Very cool... I've always utilized this mushroom in tincture. You mentioned the taste is a little like oysters... Does it have that almond flavor? Thanks
I know what you mean about the oysters having a slight almond taste and I wouldn't say the turkey tail has that same flavor- just very mild. The first time I decided to try turkey tail was when I felt a cold coming on. I didn't want to wait for the tincture so I just threw in the blender with some chicken stock, blended and cooked. I remember thinking it was going to be horribly bitter and probably chalky like an old chicken of the woods. But after I drank some, all I could think was,"wow this is pretty good!". So now it's my go to for a quick mushroom stock or soup.
@@nalwangapatricia1379 if you can't find any in the wild. I would recommend searching online... there are plenty of sites that offer quality turkey tail. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!

In the span of 24 hours I turned into a mushroom farmer. There is so much to unpack with how many people in my life need this daily, myself included.
Great video, I like how you crushed it up before hand. I put my mushrooms in whole but will now go back and blend them up! Then only way you could improve on this recipe is after the alcohol extract is done, simmering the leftover crushed mushroom in hot water for a few hours, about the same volume of water than the alcohol. Then you can blend the water into the alcohol making a double extract. It also ensures you are keeping the final tincture about 30% alcohol which maximizes shelf life. Too high of alcohol can degrade the medicinal compounds.

Soo, once you have the tincture made how much do you use? Do you do anything with the mushrooms after straining? Is there any more medicinal use for them? TIA!
I am in the process of making my first batch. I couldn't believe how easy the coffee grinder was. I used a dehydrator for a day or so and then broke the Turkey Tail into smaller pieces. I was wondering if a coffee filter in one of those small single cup serving gizmos wouldn't work. I'll try it and let you know. It did not work well with the elderberry tincture that I made; it started out well, but then just stopped dripping... I love this video. Thank you.
Found some turkey tail yesterday while out hiking. I think that's what I'm gonna do with mine. My wife has been making herbal tinctures might as well make one from mushrooms.
Right on!! Many years ago my wife and I started with plant tintures and then we eased into mushroom tinctures. Sounds like a good plan... Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!
I found Turkey Tail in my local area. I have dried and stored them in a jar. I make tea with them and add lemon grass and honey. I love your way of preserving. In Australia we are lucky to 60% alcohol, higher amounts are illegal. Can you use lower percentage and get the same results. Cheers, great video.
Thanks! If you can get vodka... 40% alcohol should work. I realize that's only 80 proof however you could let the mushrooms marinate longer... let's say 8 to 10 weeks before you strain. So yes it will still work... it just takes longer. The reverse is true too. The higher the proof the less time it needs. I hope that helps and thanks for watching! Happy hunting to ya!
I use 6 ml roughly one dropper in the morning and if I'm feeling under the weather I'll add another before bed. I'll keep doing this until I start feeling better. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!
I've been just getting into this and watching a few videos yours is awesome but I was just wondering why couldn't you get like a small pot in in like use it like a steal a copper line on top of it and just simmer it and let all the steam with the medicine like the purities of it drip into a smaller bottle just thinking I don't know or would that take it all away by
Good idea... but you would loose the medicinal value once it becomes steam. The trick is to not let it boil... bring the temp up to just under a boil and simmer to ensure you keep all the medicinal goodness. I hope that makes sense and thanks for watching!
@@WildMeatLetsEat The alcohol bit is getting me, you mentioned moonshine, I'm in Ireland and we have potcheen would that be ok to use to make a tincture?
Great content! Have you tried evaporating off the alcohol? If so would love to know what kind of oil is left behind. You could then mix that with a wide range of other carrier oils, like olive oil, etc.

I made turkey tail, osha root, ginseng, dried mullein and fresh mullein extract like you did. I use it every morning since I got covid in november of 2019.
Do you have a legit link to order the turkey tail mushroom online ? How long before the turkey tail mushroom start to make an effect? What is the daily dosage to use pill or gram? Do you recommend another mushroom that will complete this turkey tail mushroom?
I don't order turkey tail because it's so prevalent in my area... you should start feeling the effects in two or three days. My daily dose is 6ml under the tongue once or twice a day, depending on how I feel. Reishi and chaga are an excellent choice to take in conjunction with turkey tail or as a stand alone mushroom. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!

Ace video! When you add it to the brown bottles and then start to take it, what doses do you recommend? My bottles have an in built pipette. Any advice would be hugely appreciated 🙏
@@WildMeatLetsEat Hi Mr Eat, if I dehydrate turkey tail, crush in a coffee and then put it into capsules do I lose much of its benefits? I've read its great defence against viruses but I've also read the human body doesn't digest turkey tail well.
@@dozzer536 the only way you'll receive the medical benefits is with a hot water extraction or alcohol... grinding it and putting it in a capsule is just like eating it... not much benefit if any. If you see it in capsule form in the store... remember all the extraction was done in a lab and a controlled environment. Hope that helps and Thanks for watching!!!
Hi, love your videos. Have you ever tried putting the tincture into a double boiler and burning off the alcohol? What would be left, I believe, would be the pure oils. I do that with cannabis for the thc and cbd for cancer treatment. Thanks.
Thank you! No I've never tried it... it would be interesting to see if it worked. If you try it please let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!!
When you use the double boiler and reduce cannabis flower with Ever Clear, you are making Rick Simpson Oil, or RSO! Let it get to about 160 degrees, but not much more, and dont reduce it too much, as it will reduce to a heavy tarr, But It has to get above 155 to release the wonderful Oils though. Mix the reduced portion about 1 part RSO with about 4 parts Coconut Oil, and store in the brown dripper bottles. It greatly reduces my back pain (especially helpful to get to sleep), when my wife rubbs it on my lumbar, and provides several hours of Relief! Be Very Careful if added to coffee, and Do Not Drive or operate Machinery, as you Will need to go to bed if you use a big drop!! And if you are subject to drug test, you will Fail. This is why Big Pharma lobbies CONNgress to keep it, and Many other homeopathic Natural medical remedies illegal. Be Careful until you learn the amount that provides the Relief you need. May God Bless you with the Benefits of the plants he Created, for our short life in this realm. Peace!!
When I made mine it had a slightly green tint to the booze now some of them had some green on top but was wondering if you think it will still be useful?
I'm not sure... this mushroom is known to have green algae that can grow on it sometimes. I have never had an extract turn green. I believe I would pass. I wish I could help more, but I'm just not sure.
Excellent video. I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I went hunting this weekend. Most of the Turkey Tail I found were older and past their prime, but I did find a lot of nice purple gilled laccaria and a sack ful of stump puffballs.
To avoid eating alcohol could i try to evaporate the alcohol using for example the base of a coffee machine and then mixing the extract with some oil? like doing a RSO....
No, the alcohol is what extracts the goodness, and it is next to impossible to separate.... however, you could use glycerin as a substitute. It will extract just as good without the alcohol. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
@@WildMeatLetsEat first thanks for the fast reply... but yes it's ok i will use alcohol for extraction and it's fine (probably alcohol works better then glycerine or maybe just faster) but once the tricomes or the good of the mushroom has been extracted i was meaning to leave the cup open for day to let the alcohol evaporate and it should remain just the extract more concentrate.... and then mixing it with an oil. Like a CBD or Full spectrum extraction for cannabis.... do you think could it work?
Fresh is always best... but I'm sure there's some medicinal values left. I would be more worried about mold or green algae with a mushroom that old. If it was me... they're so abundant I would only havest the fresh ones. Anyway, I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!
Maybe it was the video... Sorry to say the cheese cloth was just some cheap stuff from the grocery store. I'll try to check the name of it when I get back to the house. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!
Great easy video! How much of three tincture do you use and how often? Do you know what the difference is in using the alcohol, then water soak extraction methods? Does it make it any more beneficial?
Thanks! A dual extraction will give you the best of both worlds. The simple answer is... The video you just watched is for anti-inflammatory... a tea or decoction is more of an immune system modular. Now, there are many more health benefits, and I would encourage you to check in to all the wonderful things this mushroom has to offer. Dose: I will take 6ml under the tongue once or twice a day, depending on how I feel. Usually, I don't take it longer than a week or two. Remember, this is what I do, and each person is a little different. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
So for some reason I thought you were supposed to soak them to get all the dirt off of them. I soaked them for a day and a half and they started smelling foul so I rinsed them all off and set them on paper towel to try to dry them tell me did I ruin them?
Yeah... when you soak them in water, especially warm water... you'll pull out the polysaccharides. Soaking them that long, you basically made a weak tea/decoction. With a fresh flush, all you need to do is dry brush... just knock off any dirt and remove any bark. I would definitely pass... the good news is that this mushroom is prevalent. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
Technically, you can harvest the small ones. However, I would use extreme caution... when trying to identify a wild mushroom, it's best to wait until full maturity to ensure that all the key features are visible. Otherwise, you could run the risk of making a harmful decision. So I would recommend only mature ones. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!!
@@WildMeatLetsEat thanks for ur quick reply. The reason I asked about the smaller size, they're all growing together on same logs. And they're all bright orange/reddish/brown. But I see what U mean. I was even LUCKY to find the grey/blue turkey tail these eve. 😎 happy to have found u here.
I’m going to try this. My Turkey Tail mushrooms are very colorful orange/red. Everyone I see using/has the more grey/blue tint. I wondering if they got the exact potentially medicinally potencies or maybe this Orange one I got isn’t as good🤔😔
Consider comparing to Stereum ostrea... it's a common look alike and is a crust fungi... not a true polypore. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
Does it ever grow to the point that it goes bad? I just harvested some super fresh TT but it had mold underneath the upper layers on a cut stump that had 3 layers & was multi colored.
Yes, it can be too old... I would avoid any TT with mold on the fruiting body. Mold is your enemy when it comes to mushrooms. Sometimes, it will be brittle with no mold... that would be another time to pass... too old. Fresh is always best. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

The liquid you pour into the mason jar is only alcohol? Sorry I didn’t quite understand what you said when you were explaining that part
It was moonshine only... you can use vodka too. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!
How many drops per day is necessary to consume? I mean what is daily serving?
Great preparation vid but, what do you do with the extract now?
Thank you! This is what I do... roughly 6 ml under the tongue once a day to maintain a balanced immune system or... when I'm feeling under the weather, twice a day. First thing in the morning and right before bed. I hope that helps and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video! Just got interested in turkey tail as I'm seeing lots of it here on the Florida Trail. By your accent, you must be nearby.
Awesome! What a fantastic mushroom... glad to hear you're finding a lot. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!
yeah we getting a lot here in Florida because IRMA knocked down a lot of trees, now a few years later the shrooms are popping and easy to find
@@andrefecteau that's perfect! Down trees in abundance is always a good thing with mushrooms and its hard to go wrong with turkey tail.
@@WildMeatLetsEat yeah I'm excited to get back out and pick some
@@WildMeatLetsEat doin some basic beer battered fried browns for lunch...be a good vid if you have time...nothing like the crappy restaurant ones.
Ace video! When you add it to the brown bottles and then start to take it, what doses do you recommend? My bottles have an in built pipette. Any advice would be hugely appreciated 🙏
I do 6ml under the tongue once a day for maintenance and twice a day if I'm feeling rough. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
@Wild Meat Let's Eat legend! Thank you very much :)
Great video, please continue, love the movie excerps
So glad you enjoyed it!!! Hope it was helpful. Thanks for watching!!
How much and how often do you drink this? Straight from the little bottle?
I only take 6ml... about one dropper, once or twice a day, depending on how I feel.
I just take a tsp of Turkey tail ground in my coffee. With a few cacao disks that have multiple other mushroom blends added into them.
Very cool!! Any time we can avoid pharmaceuticals it's a great thing! Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!
Let it get to about 160 degrees, but not much more, and dont reduce it too much, as it will reduce to a heavy tarr,
But It has to get above 155 to release the wonderful Oils though.
Peace!!
How often do you use the turkey tail. I am sure it’s good for you but what specifically.
Thank you for much for your videos I really learn alot ❤️
Glad you enjoy them and thanks for watching!
How much tincture is recommended on a daily basis ? Thanks
Roughly 6ml under the tongue daily.
Love this video, well all your videos so far. Love how you keep things informative yet humorous!
Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching!!!
Thank you for making this process easy to go by😊
Just one thing can I wash the turkey tail in water?
You're welcome and yes but don't soak them... just run it under some water. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!
Excellent video. I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I went hunting this weekend. Most of the Turkey Tail I found were older and past their prime, but I did find a lot of nice purple gilled laccaria and a sack ful of stump puffballs.
Thank you! That's awesome. It's always a good day when you can get out in the woods! Hopefully you'll find some fresh ones soon.
I just subbed. Keep the Fungi videos coming man. Thanks
Thanks man!!
@Flowers Yes... l believe so. I'm not 100% sure, but it's worth a try. Please let me know how it turns out. Thanks.
@@WildMeatLetsEat will try and let you know once made :) thanks
Hi...I read somewhere that alcohol kills the enzymes of the mushroom. What do you know about this?
Is dried harvested in November still potent?
(4 months old)
Fresh is always best... but I'm sure there's some medicinal values left. I would be more worried about mold or green algae with a mushroom that old. If it was me... they're so abundant I would only havest the fresh ones. Anyway, I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!
Any recommendations on cheese cloth. That looks way nice than the nylon stuff I used
Maybe it was the video... Sorry to say the cheese cloth was just some cheap stuff from the grocery store. I'll try to check the name of it when I get back to the house. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!
HDX cheese cloth is the name.
So what do we use it for? And how much?
That was a nice video but at the end you forgot to tell how to use it one or two drops per day or what
Yes... 6ml under the tongue, once in the morning or twice a day, morning and night, depending on how I feel. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
Do you put it in tea? Put under tongue?
You can do both... but I just put it under my tongue. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!!
What's your daily dosage for this particular recipe?
6ml... I typically don't take it longer than a week or two.
So do u add water to it? Or do a double boil? Or just do this and use the alcohol
No water... only alcohol. That's moonshine in the milk jug.... sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching!
@@WildMeatLetsEat so no need to double boil and add water after 2nd extraction?
@@WildMeatLetsEat appreciate you getting back to me
How much do u take?
What does it treat?
Do you not cut it with water at the end
No water... that milk jug is full of moonshine.
Imma jus take the whole course, professor 💪🏼🍄😂🙌🏼
When picking the mushrooms can I use tiny to the very large mature mushrooms or ONLY mature ones???
😎 happy to have found u here.
it's great mixed with coffee...let it soak overnight as a cold brew, heat, strain and go !
Absolutely! It's hard to wrong with coffee. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya !!
Yum Great idea
How much tincture to take daily?
Thats great but what would the doses be?
6ml under the tongue once or twice a day is what I do... depending on how I feel. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
What is the dosage recommended?
What is the point of baking it? What's the difference between not baking and baking?
Storage... I didn't use all of it. I can make a tea or tincture at a later date.
Great video!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!!
cool. whats the dosage you recommend?
6ml under the tongue is what I do... once a day.
