IMHO, If it weren't for the explosion of Los Angeles style salsa in the late 90's and early 2000's through the videos posted on the Mayan Club website, Salsa wouldn't be as big as it is in the world today. In my eyes , it's the most eye-catching and exciting style of all the styles and has greatly influenced other styles of salsa. I'm very grateful to have started dancing salsa during that era, having been inspired by the likes of the Vasquez brothers, Edie the Salsa Freak, Alex Da Silva ( yes Alex for his dancing ) and Tropical Gem. It was a wonderful era and as things usually go through cycles, hopefully LA style will re-emerge to be discovered by dancers again... Oh and thank you for posting this walk down memory lane. Reminded me of why I started dancing here in Australia and making a career from it!
These were the good ol’ days. What a great video to reminisce. I wish I had more videos from that time when I danced with all these familiar faces. Best time of my life. Que viva la Salsa!!
Fantastic dancing. I feel that a lot of the Vasquez brothers style of dance pulls from their Mexican roots. The swinging and throwing of the woman and the large spacious steps reminds me of the Mexican partner dancing. That is definitely not related to typical salsa dancing. But you can see a little bit of it in the tricks of the cali salsa style as well. It definitely creates its own category and why they are considered to be the benchmark for the LA Style of salsa. Very interesting and dynamic. You can also feel the flashiness of that LA vibe. The dance and music will always reflect the experience and background of the dancers themselves as well as their current environment.
Yup. That's the way it was. We were all there... watching with awe. Back then this was "normal" every Sunday night - LATE... normally after midnight when we were all TRASHED from dancing NONSTOP to Salsa all night. Zero Bachata, Zero Merengue... just pure Salsa... all night long. It was unbelievable!! THAT'S how we got so good... dancing, dancing, dancing, until we just couldn't anymore. I lost 50 lbs during my first six months of dancing in LA. It was the most unbelievable time and place in the history of Salsa. Dancing with a single girl for a whole song meant one of two things: 1. It was her birthday 2. She just broke up with her ex. .:))) Somehow the Salseros of Los Angeles could "sense" she needed to feel "wanted by all men now..." and they sure provided that "healing" for all of us newly broken up Salseras!!! We love all of you for helping us during those times guys!!! Mua!!! We all have the Vazquez brothers to thank for making Salsa literally EXPLODE in the United States, and now all over the world. - Edie, The Salsa FREAK!!!
+miguel barrera You have to put into historical aspect...this was one of the beginning histories of LA salsa...put in perspective...before youtube... when women/men can spin more 3 two times, it was considered quite extraordinary. Salsa in LA, like many places around the world has changed and it should, bc dancing like any art forms change over time- it evolves. This clip brings great memories for all of us that have been part of that "generation". Enjoy your salsa dancing today bc in 5, 10 years from now, it will be a little different. :)
Edie, my first shines I‘ve learned from your dvds. The finger egg was the most popular style back then. It was great, thank you so much for everything ❤
the omly thing i can say is that the dancers of today don't have anything over the dancers of that era. the dancer then were really good...mssters of thier art 🎉.
Thomas Guererro of Santo Rico was also there, at Sidestreet, establishing himself as one of the best in NY and later the world. It was a magical place which started after Orchard Beach in the early evening and lasted till two or three in the morning.
The East Coast version of Steven's was a club in the Bronx called Sidestreet where future stars like Vitico de la Salsa and others would come to on Sundays night. It was an amazing school.

Who are the main two female dancers?
I 'think' that the blonde is Felicia June. Correct?
Me siempre gustó como bailaba el delgado chico alto: 0:00..., 5:43 ..., 8:15... Mientras como se mueve la mujer desde 12:08 es mejor.
