I met Michael Jayston, who played Rochester in the 1973 version. We talked about the miniseries, and he even spoke about how to properly pronounce his co-star's first name. Even got him to autograph my DVD copy. Sadly he recently passed away.

I love your number one as well!! I used to think the 1983 version was the best until I saw the 2006 one!

Thanks for your video. I liked the 2006 version the best as well. Toby Stevens was a 3 dimensional Rochester, really showed the motivation for his actions, and made the character more sympathetic. The flashback scenes you mentioned made sense to me. If Charlotte had written a scene on Jane’s bed, the book would been tossed directly into the bin and not been published, but in 2006 makes more sense.

I love your number 1. Ruth Wilson gave an exquisite performance. The one with Timothy Dalton has the most detail but I didn't find them believable as a couple. Unpopular opinion, I love the one with Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds. Each version has its' own strengths. Agree the one with George C Scott, yeah he looked way too old even though a gorgeous man. I saw a clip of the one with William Hurt and I normally love him but thought he was terrible as Rochester so I haven't rented it yet. Fun to see someone else a bit obsessed with JE.

@@Sheneahsbeauty I heard someone makes one each decade. So yes, hopefully someone will make one for the 2020's. I've been thinking Adam Driver would make a great Rochester. It's from watching him as Kylo Ren that I have this idea. He'd be awesome, I think, not positive, but thinking.

I love Samantha Morton's portrayal! And I absolutely agree, Timothy and Zelah are not a believable couple! I so wish he had had a more responsive, and younger, partner.

The 2006 is my favorite. It has a scene from the book that I always loved and no other adaptation has that I know of, and that is the smack- down between the two Reed sisters! Even the 1983, which is my second favorite, doesn't include it. I admit the 1997 movie is flames, but I like it that Rochester shows kindness to Little Adele, and doesn't make snide remarks about her. Also we get to see Blanche's reaction to Rochester picking the governess over her. 2011 is everything you say, but I do hate being cut short at the end like that! My favorite part of it is Mrs. Rochester! Stunning! They do seem determined to make her so beautiful. Of course in the book she was anything but.

My favorite miniseries versions were the 1973 and 1983 versions. The best movie version was 2011, followed by 1970. The 1970 version was scored by John Williams. Bernard Hermann scored the 1940s version. The 2006 version deviated from the book, but it was well done. I will downgrade a version if Rochester calls Jane by her first name too early because it marks a shift in their relationship in the book. (It's in the fire scene, not earlier.)

Yesssss, the 70s and 80s knew how to do the best adapatations for our fav books, the latest ones make me cringe lmao, but I love the 2006 and 2011 version for this series.

For me, each adaptations has its good and bad points. I haven't found one which is complete. I either like the Rochesters or the Janes. Unpopular opinion: I found both Zelah's and Ruth's portrayals unconvincing, the former was too demure, the latter too modern and flirtatious. My favourite is Samantha Morton, followed by Charlotte, Mia and even Sorcha (1973). I like most Rochesters, though. Especially Timothy and Toby whom I'd have liked to have been paired with a different partner for the reasons stated above. I suppose we all have different tastes, this novel really touches our ❤

I watched the 1983 version and really liked it. I might try the 2011 version. I started watching the 2006 version, but I had to turn it off. If you hadn't read the book, her childhood scenes felt very rushed and disjointed and unnecessary. Some scenes were also too dramatic, like the Red Room was just like all red, and the music got too intense for some parts. BUT I did like Rochester's sense of humour. I honestly think he's protrayed too grouchy sometimes. Some of his book lines are hilarious, and what little I watched of the 2006 version seemed to capture that aspect.
I feel the same about the 2005? Pride & Prejudice. Didn't like it. I guess I prefer the old dry BBC versions that are closer to the book and not catered to modern audiences, lol. (except 1995 Sense & Sensibility. LOVE that film.)

The 2011 version is nice, the actors really understood the assignment! Lol the 2006 version is dramatic as I don't know what, but I like how it just gives off a different vibe from the others, this director lived for the dramatics.
I do prefer the old versions too, it has way more depth, those are my old faithful watches. But I love keira knightly in P&P, she embodied Jane well. 1995 S&S I consider to be on the older side bc it still has a nice touch.

Agree I enjoyed the 1973 BBC version any day over the 1983 BBC version. The 1973 Jane Eyre is a secret pleasure to watch. Loved the details of the background, loved the acting of Michael Jayston especially during the church interruption scene and after the fire scene where Rochester whispers "Jane" as she walks out the door......sooooo damn good. Yes it is a bit long and there are parts where they could have cut, HOWEVER this is the only version know of that Rochester sings!

You forgot the 1973 version, Rochester (MIchael Jayston) is great, but he had the misfortune of a very badly cast: one of the Cusack's girls, Sorcha. She is ugly (and a very bad actress). But the adaptation is better than the 1983 version, in my opinion.

Yeah, some of the viewers brought this up to me, it's funny b/c when I was researching, that one didn't pop up. Oh wow, I really gotta watch it now, 1983 version got me in a chokehold lol.
