This is very useful but I feel it's incomplete. It would have been useful to show what steps the victim should take to prevent this happening, eg verifying the email by hovering the curser over the email address, not clicking on any links from an untrusted source etc.

I think the problem here is not the 2FA but rather the user himself not paying attention to :
1. The URL of the sites you access and ask for your password
2. The email sending you the "security alert."
Simple things like this can save you, or ruin your account if not paid attention
When you are dealing with very old people the trick is saying: NEVER PUT YOUR CREDENTIALS IF AN E-MAIL ASKS YOU TO, only if the site with a legit URL itself says so. That's what i did with my old relatives and still no attacks thankfully
Tbh some of them are really clever. One recent with steam imitated a new popup window looking exactly like your native browser with the real address (the popup was for sso). If you didn't try to drag the window outside of your browser, you couldn't tell at all it was fake.
@@UnknownString88 The trick is using the program or legit site manually or, in the case of the bank or cards, calling them directly.
Yeah ultimately a trick like this will work even with a 2FA app or clicking a button that pops up on your phone.
The main thing here is the attacker is time limited.. So they can't just have a normal phishing site that just scoops up credentials for later.
An attacker could even have a site that provides a small remote desktop viewport aimed at the attacker's own web browser showing a Google login page, and track a user into logging in for the attacker.
The best defense is to use your web browser's built in tools:
1. Verify the URL on the address bar and that the green lock with optional org name matches what you expect to see.
2. Verify that address bar is REAL and not a fake popup window that is part of the HTML page (so they can put whatever URL or green lock they want. I find the best way to do this is to customize your browser theme and OS color scheme away from their defaults; the fake window will most likely get the appearance wrong. Of course, the "window" also won't leave the
3. Verify the login is working as expected. For example the "popup window" may not be expected as you may expect a OAuth prompt with an Authorize button that takes you back to the original site.
4. If you expect to be logged in already, be suspicious of a login prompt.
5. Use your browser's password autofill. If autofill suddenly stops working for a site it used to work on, it's a good chance it's not the real site. Check it!
6. When in doubt access the actual site you are trying to log into using the official URL or a Google search rather than trusting the email or whatever tried to drive you to the site. If you had a legit notice of something you need to resolve on the site, you can look on the site itself directly, or contact their support and ask them to confirm there is a problem with your account.
7. If you go to a site which requires you to log in using another service (like Google) to perform some action you were asked to do, if the site seems to allow you ro register a new account with them instead, you may want to just go that route. If there is a login form for these types of accounts but creating a new account ONLY allows you to do so via Google or whatever, be suspicious (it is possible it's legitimate though).
A password manager would help to not allow this kind of a attack, since the password manager would realize that the URL was not the correct one. It would at least give you a heads up that the page might not be secure.

It happened to me. Exactly what he said . 😢I lost 400$ . The hackers sent me a log in page to my crypto currency wallet and I did not check the url so I automatically used my save iCloud chain username and password and put my Face ID. In 2 minutes when I realized url is suspicious I tried to withdraw my money . But it was already processing 😢. Good life lesson. I’m so lucky it happened to only 400$. So make sure use different passwords to you email accounts as well as other banking accounts. Always use 2FA

Really you use a password manager? Like for real. Nice to know this is about 2fa by pass and not hacking your password manager.
You could automate some of this, the fake page code can enter the password to the real page, send the SMS, then take the user response and log in to the real page. The two important points here is that you give the user a response, a fake web site to play with, while you access the real one. The other point is you (the hacker) needs to be on that real page fairly quickly or it may time out. Some kind of keep alive code might be useful for that.
Bottom line is stupid people who answer emails gonna get hacked. Even on legit emails from say the bank, I don't click the email, but go to the bank site and verify what is going on directly.
i make it a point to never click on anything in a email. and if i was to get an email alert about my account. i would be investigating it myself.

It is however bypassing 2FA as a 100% secure login method. It doesn't mean that it's a weakness specially for 2FA, but it means 2FA is still vulnerable to this social engineering exploit.
