The Sabols were the single most important men in the history of the NFL after Halas. Every single image, memory, any of have, and will pass on to our grandchilden is thanks to NFL Films. The reason players got nominated to Canton is because of NFL films. If the Sabols took a liking to your image, you made it.
I use to watch this with my dad and brother loved the music it really got you pumped up great ole days of the game ! I still watch the old shows on UA-cam.
I love the prediction segment. Two veteran NFL football players turned announcers, and if they had a different opinion on a game, they just respected each other's opinion and moved on to the next pick. Today it would be obnoxious ESPN "take artists" like Screamin' A Smith or Skip Brainless yelling at each other because MUST HAVE CONFLICT FOR TV.
I love hearing the names like Jerry Rome and knowing he went on to be an offense coordinator, I also love how back them teams had the capability and no problem with playing a back up quarterback to replace the starter in a game

Here we are 50 years later and on this fine weekend there is one identical matchup, NY Jets VS. Buffalo Bills, in NYC, 50 years later to the day. In 1970 it was at Shea Stadium, in 2020 it is at Metlife Stadium. It would be fun to use the time tunnel and have each 2020 team play against the 1970 team. The 1970 Bills might actually have a chance against the 2020 Jets.

Everyone used to beat the crap out of the Pats back then and for many years to come. That 1970 team was one of the worst. The next season, they drafted Jim Plunkett, moved to a new stadium in Foxborough and went 6-8. It was almost like having a real professional football team.
When I was 8 or 9, when I went out to play football against my brother in the back yard, I would start singing one of these songs to drive my brother and his team crazy.

Great point. I love watching the video of the games from back then, but I’m surprised by the lack of fundamental tackling in that era. A lot of the time it looks like the defensive player is trying to inflict pain or physical damage more than get the ball carrier on the ground with a fundamental tackle.

The Cowboys and Chief also battled over the services of two historic player/ The Chiefs out maneuvered the Cowboys over Otis Taylor. The Cowboys won the tug over a long-shot future prospect. That of course being one Roger Staubach. beating the champs was a big stepping stone for the Cowboys. It showed they can compete and win against the top teams. Of course that culminated the next season when Dallas ran over the Dolphins in Super Bowl VI 24-3. How Bout Them Cowboys

Speaking of the Lions, Wayne Rasmussen was the last one to hold for kicks with no facemask, as late as 1972; the rest of the time, when he played defensive back and on coverage/return teams, he always wore his regular helmet, which had a double-bar facemask.
Hughes Sports Network, which syndicated TWIPF for a year or two, had bid on the Monday Night Football package, but the NFL ended up going with ABC instead. Both CBS and NBC passed, wanting to keep their regular Monday night lineups intact.
A couple of interesting items: 1) The Bengals flea flicker in their own end zone at 29:20 2) I counted at least five TDs shown that were nullified by penalty - why bother showing them at all?
Yeah I was surprised by the number of plays they showed that were nullified by penalty. But they all made for great highlights and after all it was a highlight show. They could have been devious and not mentioned the penalties since I don't think any of the highlights showed the ref throwing the flat.
Keep in mind this is 1970. The deep pass was a major weapon in the late 60's. So to combat this many defenses went full zone coverages. This forced offenses to drive with alternate go-to receivers. Checkdowns became the norm. This opened the door the best response to the Zone. Running the Ball. The running game exploded in the 1970's. Naturally scoring went down. This compelled the league to liberate the passing game. 1978 saw many rule changes that helped the pass.
You would think the NFL would try to ban all media sources from showing these highlights. I mean, it illustrates just how much worse todays' game is. Not saying the players today aren't bigger, or faster, or can't bench press more, or put up better measurables in a combine, or make more money. It's just that the game is so much worse. I won't go into the reasons because this is UA-cam, no one came here to read a book. And that's pretty much what it would take.

In those days the Cowboys had a mixed record against the top teams. Even that season they got trounced by the Vikings and humiliated by the Cardinals. So playing against the World Champion Chiefs in KC and prevailing proved a benchmark. Of course that year the Cowboys did reach that next level. Even going toe -toe against the Colts in SB V. This shows that yes they can play at a top level. And of course they put everything together in 1971 and RAN OVER Miami 24-3 in SB VI. And of course we know what how America's Team would fare during the rest of the 1970's. How Bout My Dallas Cowboys.
Dallas was first nicknamed "Next Year's Champions" because they had the reputation of not able to win the big one. They lost both NFL championship games that sent the Packers to the first two Super Bowls in the last seconds, then choked the next two years against the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs. Next, they will lose Superbowl V against the Colts in this season.
@@jackmessick2869 The years from 1966 through 1970. These were growing pains for the Cowboys. The players had begun to buy into Tom Landry's system. But it can be said that he over-complicated things. The teams the Cowboys lost to(Packers, Browns and the Colts) were rich in fundementals and knew how to exploit weaknesses. Tom realized he had to make adjustments. So he changed his philosophy to a more run-heavy attack. I think this led to his decision to make Roger(a running QB) the starter in 1971. And what a decision that was. The running game ran for over 250 yards in Super Bowl VI against Miami.
Partly because 1970 was the year that the NFL and AFL finally completed their merger, and the teams from the two leagues could finally play each other in the regular season. And the Chiefs had been the Dallas Texans from 1960-62, competing with the NFL's Cowboys for the attention (and attendance) of the area's football fans.
Football used to be so great and TWIPF was so well done and we really looked forward to it. Now with 24/7 hilties it all pretty much stinks and looks the same, Pure Crap

How can beating a team not even from your own division(Kansas City) be considered the "Most important" game your team(Dallas)'s history(LOL)?
In those days the Cowboys had a mixed record against the top teams. Even that season they got trounced by the Vikings and humiliated by the Cardinals. So playing against the World Champion Chiefs in KC and prevailing proved a benchmark. Of course that year the Cowboys did reach that next level. Even going toe -toe against the Colts in SB V. This shows that yes they can play at a top level. And of course they put everything together in 1971 and RAN OVER Miami 24-3 in SB VI. And of course we know what how America's Team would fare during the rest of the 1970's. How Bout My Dallas Cowboys.
Dallas was first nicknamed "Next Year's Champions" because they had the reputation of not able to win the big one. They lost both NFL championship games that sent the Packers to the first two Super Bowls in the last seconds, then choked the next two years against the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs. Next, they will lose Superbowl V against the Colts in this season.
@@jackmessick2869 The years from 1966 through 1970. These were growing pains for the Cowboys. The players had begun to buy into Tom Landry's system. But it can be said that he over-complicated things. The teams the Cowboys lost to(Packers, Browns and the Colts) were rich in fundementals and knew how to exploit weaknesses. Tom realized he had to make adjustments. So he changed his philosophy to a more run-heavy attack. I think this led to his decision to make Roger(a running QB) the starter in 1971. And what a decision that was. The running game ran for over 250 yards in Super Bowl VI against Miami.
Partly because 1970 was the year that the NFL and AFL finally completed their merger, and the teams from the two leagues could finally play each other in the regular season. And the Chiefs had been the Dallas Texans from 1960-62, competing with the NFL's Cowboys for the attention (and attendance) of the area's football fans.
