Everyone comparing this to 88 Scouts, remember the context. This wasn’t the Cadets’ closer that year. It was their fun middle number. So yeah, no wonder it’s not as good or intense as 88 Scouts. It’s still a banger. :)
Also 88 Scouts was really REALLY close to the Stan Kenton big band arrangement. And that old chart kicks ass, so of course the show was great. This cadets show is a disconnected highlight reel of that classic chart.
I marched Madison Drumline in 88 (tenors) and I'm humble enough to give a big ass shout out to The Cadets( Garfield)'s drumline. They killed it!!! Much respect to them from " The corps if brothers" Madison Scouts- We Never Walk Alone.....
You guys came to Amsterdam that year. I was with Concord drum n bugle corp back then. You guys were so cool. I remember "Ziggy" He was so cool. I went on to do be a drummer playing for Britney, Nick JOnas, Boy George and others. When I saw the show, I knew you would win that year. We all said it and that was us LOVING BD!!!!
You guys killed it also!!! Don’t sell yourself short. 88 was an incredible year and turning point for Drum Corps. And you were part of it. Plus you were World Champs that year. You guys were the best of the best. Congrats
Im going down a rabbit hole of Malaguena here. This evening, with my little guy, I have put time in on the 1980, 88, 96 Scouts and now the 03 Cadets. Power... 88 Scouts. Electricity... 88 Scouts Tasty percussion... 03 Cadets. Precision, its a hard sell between 96 Scouts and 03 Cadets.
talk about SPICY!! The Cadets version had it ALL! This arrangement brought all the elements of a blockbuster Hollywood movie and then some! It had a subtle/smooth beginning, an intense climax, and a fantastic finish that left the audience breathless and wanting more!! Can't wait to see who tries to top this version of Malaguena. :) - to quote Christopher Walken "aka Bruce Dickenson" from SNL --> "..I've gotta fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell!" - The Kid, Cadets '79 - '84, snare drummer.
You should appreciate a little bit of both... Madison has my preferred key, tempo, emotion, trumpet seniority. Cadets have the demand, precision, ensemble balance and sound, variety (they had a few different styles mixed in to show off their dexterity) drill cleanliness and writing. I think one can love the Madison Version but agree that the Cadet version will always score better.
While not trying to diminish how well the Cadets played this or how good the players are, the Scouts utterly destroy the song, while the Cadets just play it pretty well. Plus the rendition of the song loses parts of what made it so amazing for the Scouts. It's a nice tribute but not nearly the same level. Although this is just my opinion, and this is the internet so people will probably flame me for it.
In 2003, Cadets did this better on an overall basis. But I dare anyone to tell me that the intro Boston did in 2003 wasn't just as intense, if not more so, at the start.
@Teder95 Because most kids own a trombone and it's an instrument you can transfer from marching band to marching band. a band director wont purchase 40 marching baritones just to use for the marching band, when he could buy 40 trombones that can be used for everything. pretty sure this isn't the only reason but it's a big reason why.
It was played up an octave. With so many trumpets, it may be hard to hear, but it's there. The leads that year were incredible. Also this isn't a very good recording of it.
Just F***ing FILTHY...Contra 1985. My favorite shows were 86 and 84. This is my fav performance! This is so stanky, I wonder if Hop was realty pissed again!
"bugles"have conical bores-the tubing gradually enlarges, whereas most American band brasses have cylindrical bores-makes a difference in tonal quality.
+April Linder as a musician who has performed this arrangement as well as having marched with Madison, I *much* prefer the Scouts 88 arrangement as well, for the same reasons. This version just sounds incomplete, unfinished, and while very likely closer to "the original arrangement", just doesn't have the same face-melting feel to it (partly due to use of B-flat horns instead of G bugles). I know you probably won't understand this, since being so high up on your horse and obviously you probably couldn't hear me for shouting (do you get nosebleeds up there?), and since you obviously aren't an accomplished enough a musician to have performed at this level (although you definitely do have the snobby prima donna attitude which might suggest otherwise, and with which I am also intimately familiar by way of having smacked it down more than once), but the performers in the corps actually aren't responsible for the arrangements they perform. The cadets played this quite well- it was just a less-than-stellar arrangement, and the Scouts 88 version, for all that they really weren't all that great overall (their win that year notwithstanding) just has a more complete feel to it. Or, to simplify my post in a vulgar colloquialism I'm using here because you're a language nanny and thus richly deserve to hear it: shut the fuck up.
Sweet Kyle Nally... u missed the entire beginning of this conversation, which Google deemed unfit to be seen & removed, in which an uneducated nincompoop was spouting & crowing about his little insignificant self while at the same time trying to tear me apart. FYI, I marched 5 years with DCI & have several awards & commendations from my time in the different Corps. I also graduated with a musical performance degree that has come in handy in my years playing in several nationally acclaimed orchestras. So until u know the whole story, maybe it should be u who, shuts the fuck up.
+April Linder Instead of slandering and putting people down, why don't you grow up a little and be positive and nice. One would think after 5 years of DCI, and a degree in music, that you would spend more time being productive and making UA-cam videos showing positivity, or actually spelling out the word "you", instead you show negative towards people for no reason. You ma'am, give a bad image for people who march DCI. Thankyou. Have a nice day. 😊
@DongleKumquat lol bullshit on #1 and #2. Last year me and another trombone player dominated the field. Our tone was so good the judge didn't know whether or not we were the baritone section lol. and for #1. Well there was one part of the show where we played FFF. All one of the judge's said was "oh!" and he was silent for the next 5 seconds. We literally overpowered our entire 60+ band...and that was just two of us. btw We were marching .500 bores. and 6 1/2 mouthpieces. nothing special
I love the Cadets. I do. But playing Malagueña after Madison in 1988 is like trying to play Spartacus after 2008 or Phantom of the Opera after 1989. It's just wrong. Sorry!
Where's the melody? The song? The music? All I heard was was an extended drum solo, then finally a minute of a half of flourishes at the end - not a song. Try singing this version to yourself. You can't. That has to tell you something. This can't hold 1980 Madison's jockstrap. If this is what DCI has "evolved" to, then that might explain why the bleachers are empty for DCI shows although the US population is 100 million larger than it was in 1980.
brother this was like...16 years ago...dci is nothing like this anymore. Besides, nothing wrong with some awesome drumline beats. And clearly the crowd went wild for all of it.
I remember being at this performance. I remember the crowd going crazy throughout the entire performance, and each time the crowd got crazy it got louder and louder. The Corps that year was genius. I marched with s s the v back in the 70s. Its so funny how so much has changed since then. The whole Corps is now in movement almost a hundred percent of the time. Back in the old days it was unheard of.
Overall...the Scout's version was more electrifying....Brass was OFF THE CHARTS in KC that year....I think I prefer the Percussion arrangement from this version (The Cadets). WAY MORE tasty. Great writing and great execution. Will always love the piece never the less.
SUCH an awesome song..... always. Cadets..... KILLIN IT!!!! Love this one. Yeah, love the Scouts '88 too. But hell, love that BLAST! version, too. I dunno. Enjoy music. Don't pick it apart too much..... some stuff is just meant to be loved.
Im a trumpet guy, but my absolute favorite part of this is the snare licks on this mvmt. I’ve no doubt the movement across the 50 was well rehearsed. I don’t know drums well, but the movement combined with the clean triplets around 3:00 is just awesome.
There is no better version than the Madison scouts. This trumpet trio can’t compete with the Scout trio. That show was insanely awesome. Madison will always have a special place in my heart. They knew how to put on a show.

@TheJugernaut9 I really dont think they have the same sound. Baritones DO have a much richer tone... dont get me wrong I love trombone, its a fun instrument, but not for corps.

yes, I particularly love this movement for the general timbre, drill, anyway, I love it.
Michael says it the same way

I can appreciate this version but for me 1988 Madison Scouts is the Standard for this chart.......
What about ‘80 Scouts?
‘88 or ‘96 Scouts is almost a toss up for me. Both are superior to this version.
Chris Wire yep. Those are THE years!
‘80 Scouts is my favorite
Madison's is excellent but I believe The Cadets rendition is equally superb.

Wow brings back fond memories, because I was there; the world championships were held on the campus of UCF in Orlando FL.
Jeez the tenor player pointing at the judge after their feature was badass
This is what Marching band and drum corps is about for me
Damn,,, I forgot about the Cadets Drumline this year. Shame on me. Freakin Bravo!!!!!
Best summer experience of my life 😊
J J what did you play/spin?
Point at the judge after the quad solo. HELL YESSS
Hot damn drumline! Those are some nice clean beats!
I like this show better than the Cavie's spin cycle that year... The BD show was pretty nuts tho.
So much respect.
one of the soloist from this show I met him yesterday ^.^
POWER!!!!!
I honestly love The Cadets playing this but When northwestern State demon band played this song it sent shivers down my spine.
nobody but Madison can really pull off Malaguena. Sorry to everybody else that has tried to do it and will try.
I have been a Madison Scouts fan for over 40 years but this has to be the most exciting version of Malaguena that I have ever heard. Incredible!
That was fucking crazy.
Very nice rendition of what the Cabs have been doing for centuries

what great!verycoo!!
2 or 3 valve, meh, but gotta agree on the key of G . . . miss it :(
The corps had one free day all season and hated every minute of it
88 and 96 Scouts were better in my opinion. I just feel like you need G bugles to really do that song justice.
@thedypunisher Well I found out very recently that there is such a thing as a bell front marching trombone. 3 valved, no slide
