When i was young i found my father, almost agnostic, and a medical doctor, almost moved to tears listening to Kirtan (in this instance Bengali kirtan based on the Vaishnav - Krishna - tradition). it would freak me out, to see my rather scientifically tempered and rational father melt midst the strains of what i then thought was rather chaotic cacophony of cymbals and chant and drums.
today, nearing fifty, i respond to kirtan just as my did did, with tears in my eyes and a big leap in my heart, glipsing shards of what might be called a spiritual experience in the Sufi sense --- of abandonmnet from all sense of self. the thing is, i have moved from my dad's near antagonistic believes to abject atheism.
so Kirtan does things to people -- to foreign ears, i suppose it must sound different, but the throaty strains of unconsciously rendered kirtan to raucous music is something else ...
