I just noticed that for the first time. As a mother of a Waldorf circus child I LOVED this show so much. And Steven Schwartz and I went to the same school!
The difference from the 1973 Tony’s to 2013 is mind blowing. So much has changed in 40 years. Not just the concept and song/dance itself, but also the technology, the illusions, and the acrobatics. It’s so much more impressive now
it is impressive, buit Fosse will stand the test of time, as he showed what cordination can do Granted there are tohers that are worthy, like the west end version, but Pippin is always about what the performer can do.
This brings a tear to my eye because it just shows the beauty of performance and theater. The costumes, the music, the choreography, the tricks, the lights, the movement...just UGH!
An incredible production! I only wish it had been recorded and made available after the production (Broadway and on the road) were over. The production really deserved to be preserved.
holy moly. i've always loved this musical (and this song), but had no idea the broadway performance was so incredible. bravo ladies and gents. bra! vo!! =))
Back in '98 I was asked by my flute tutor if I wanted to be in the orchestra/band for a show in our nearest city of Leicester, UK. They were looking for a flute player and apparently I was to be the one. I had never heard of Pippin, but I showed up , was given the music and we got to practising. I loved the energy of being in "the pit" but I confess to remembering so little of the show itself because my brain was focused on being ready to play 😅 Now in my mid-40s and a few songs spring to mind regularly even now, Magic To Do, Ordinary Woman and Corner of the Sky remain my faves til this day. How wonderful that I can view the show here on UA-cam and actually watch it properly 😄💓
Enjoy! I played recorder in a school band and usually watched the show while playing unless it was a difficult part. Dunno if that's a superpower or just double-dipping.
I saw this show in previews 9 years ago at the Music Box Theater. I loved the circus staging. It was magical 👐. Best version ever and the leading player was absolutely fantastic.
Pippin is not at all about a circus spectacle. It is about showmanship, illusion and deception - most emphatically self-deception. No special effects can add or take away from its original message.
Magic to Do is one of those songs that like, just fits with a lot of different things. I once saw this college Shakespeare troupe that opened their production of The Tempest with this song. It was super cool. ua-cam.com/video/Pw9t0Vb9gB4/v-deo.html
Now that you mention it, this would probably also work super well at the start of a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I can totally picture Puck singing LP's part.
ffffff this is going to be in Japan soon and now I want to see it (if there are still tickets, if I haven't missed it...) Crystal Kay is the Leading Player, I only know her from the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist, I have no idea if she's good in this, but still.
I recently saw a video of her singing this song, and she's absolutely dazzling as the Leading Player. I don't know Japanese, and I was still utterly enthralled. If you still can, definitely go see it!
It's always possible to add bells, whistles, clowns, and acrobats to anything. Then that thing becomes a full blow circus, a spectacle, and not the thing intended. Bob Fosse's extraordinary original choreography integrated the opening with the story. The original is still the greatest.
I like it. It shows that it's old and they've been doing this "scam" for a long time and probably have hundreds or thousands of victims before Pippin showed up.
They call it the cycloroma the back drop and its a mark of a bad technically run show if you can see the seams like that. Theater is supposed to be a show with no distractions. Shows win awards based on set running crew excellence like they do the cast. And that wrinkled cycloroma is amaturish even by high school standards for theater.
well that’s the point of a revival, to bring something new to a show that was already produced, to try new things. they may not always work out but they’ll never know unless they try.
I love that the Leading Player works as a unisex role. A variety of voices can kill it and it really adds a special touch to each show.
My high school performed this show my junior year, and the Leading Player was a girl. She nailed it.
You can even have multiple! we did that at my theater.
She can’t sing the score. She is so talented but she was unbelievably wrong in this role but she won a Tony award so there you have it.
She got it. She got it. She has it...she owned it.. and made it better. With respect to ben
Can we just take a second to appreciate the man singing while standing on his hands?
Truth be told he admitted he can't sing at all.
I just noticed that for the first time. As a mother of a Waldorf circus child I LOVED this show so much. And Steven Schwartz and I went to the same school!
the original greatest showman

Lily I really liked the revivals take on the story. I had no idea what it was about going in and by the end I was like, woah.
@@troykawahara4496 Yh they actually hired a real circus troupe as the chorus as well 😭

I was 9 years old when I first saw the original show with Ben Vereen. This version is cleaner, sophisticated, and a showstopper!
Cleaner as in more family friendly? Or cleaner as in more put-together?
@@JordanSmith-jd1ee oh sorry for not clarifying. Cleaner as in it's cohesive and put together.
@@JordanSmith-jd1ee definitely not family friendly

That grand reveal though...I'm crying

IM A BOB FOSSE SUPERFAN AND IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REALIZE THAT PIPPIN WAS DIRECTED BY HIM IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
I was fortunate enough to see this production on Broadway. Truly amazing.
I saw it in Boston, first run!
Spectacular spectacular! Loved the show, so glad this is here to relive the opening.
I would love to see this show
One of the best musicals to hit Broadway, I loved both versions
that flip at 1:50 where she's thrown into the air and then comes down alongside the bow with the rest of the cast
That throw and catch in a lift at 2:43 is just about as impressive.

Damn to have talent like what those performers have ! As for whoever conceived this , beyond genius !
Still got it's magic even 7 years later.😍😲🤹🏾♀️🎭

this is my favorite show
Probably my favorite tony awards live performance 🥰
Great show. Great Music. Patina!!!!!
she is part of one terrific circus act
Absolument superbe merci beaucoup cordialement Gerard
Patina Miller is FABULOUS!
Lewis is so underrated I love him so much
I love Pippin
This is playing at USC soon and I can't wait to see my daughter as leading player!!!!❤
omg aghhhhhhh this is amazing patina miller is a goddess
When the Eartha Kitt musical eventually becomes a reality, Patina better get first refusal. Her facial structure and expressions are soooo Eartha!
I saw this in 2013 with my family. We were in the 2nd row. Amazing.
I’m doing this for my eighth grade graduation but never have seen the actual performance yet! It’s incredible
I love this performance so much
This would make a great live broadcast
I'm in love
Pippin is not at all about a circus spectacle. It is about showmanship, illusion and deception - most emphatically self-deception. No special effects can add or take away from its original message.
I think the circus theatrics help sell that point.
Yes chorus is intended for background not the main attraction.

Consider all the TV shows and movies about magical characters. Why hasn't any of them recorded a cover?
Very cool idea

We’re performing this at a camp and we def got the best song ‼️‼️‼️
Yes! That's how it's done.
I feel like this is how everyone at Burning Man sees themselves.
oof that moment when i realize Patina is basically doing trapeze contortion...
2:29 lol the second one from the left looks like she wants to be Anna from Frozen! She even got the hair!
Patina is a godess!
great circus act ...
I love this performance even though I still don’t understand what the entire musical is about.
It’s about a young man who’s trying to find meaning to his life and it turns out to be a case of “careful what you wish for.”
I prefer the tony awards version over the cast recording. It has more power and "magic"
Is it too late to get this sent out in the time capsule going out to space?
0:49 The OG Broadway Javert and Beast.
Deloris Van Cartier joined the circus!!! 😮
idk what’s happening but i’m in to it
I've always loved this number! And this version is even better than the original.
My first Broadway play, 1974
Wish I'd kept the playbill.
I’m doing the exact musical

Did they get Charlemagne‘s costume on Amazon?
Is that Patina?
Is anyone else really distracted by how wrinkly the fabric is? 😂😂😂

@@doctortimetv1577 but it may have been a stylistic choice for this particular show
@@taylorhope4651 Yeah, I read it as intentionally wrinkly since The Troupe itself is supposed to be kind of a ragtag crew of shady characters

Does anyone else think Patina Miller sounds similarly like Eartha Kitt?
Patina was great, but Ben Vereen was magical.
Hi performing arts people
My roommate Emily Tharp is in that song
We doing best of broadway and I have to sing some parts in this song
This is like The Greatest Showman!
Caroline Lizares this was BEFORE greatest showman :D
patina miller wife me challenge
Why does the unisex aspect matter. The narrator played by a good actor sets the scene
My acting troupe did this song to open The Tempest and it was so awesome! ua-cam.com/video/Pw9t0Vb9gB4/v-deo.html
A superior production of a mediocre show. Much improved over the original from the early '70s, but still hard to sit through the whole show.
Ben Vereen did it better.
Looks and Sounds like an episode of "Glee" ....
Matilda should’ve won
Almost sounded as if Patina was lip syncing.
A sad revival of the original 1972 production, Fosse's staging is dead this this, Not Close to BEN VEREEN & Orignal cast
Thank goodness this version is nowhere near as dreary and passe as that old 1972 staging
