the noctua NF-S12B redux may not be pressure optimized, but it still produces more static pressure, pushes more air and is QUIETER!!! than Corsair's popular SP120 "quiet edition" fan. however, the 140mm NF-P14s produces more static pressure AND airflow than anything corsair has in that size while producing less noise. plus there is a 6 year warranty. personally, i think this is a win.
+Commander Shepard are you referring to the SP120 fans with the LED lights? those are the only ones that you can get for $20 a pair. and they suck balls. i'd never use them in a build. i wouldn't even take them if they were free. i have a box of them here and they are totally worthless. when you mount them to a radiator, even a thin one, they start making horrible whining noises because the motor can't handle the back flow of air. however, the proper SP120 PWM fans with noise insulation and a proper motor that CAN somwhat handle air back flow cost $40 for a pack of two directly from corsair (part number CO-9050012-WW), or $30 from newegg or some other place like that. they don't push much air at all and you can't get those for $20 for a pair. for $5 more a pop, the noctuas are hands down the superior option. i've had them all. noctua. noiseblocker NB eLoop, ek vardars, etc. currently both of my gaming computers are outfitted with nidec servo gentle typhoons on 120mm rads. and noctua redux on the 140mm rads.
A bit late to comment, but I've been using 4 redux and 2 regular high end noctua fans in my 2003 case. High end as intakes, 1 redux as cpu side panel intake going through a funnel that hangs over the oem cpu fan as a easy cold air intake. And the remaining 3 redux fans as exhaust. All controlled with a GELID 6sp touchscreen controller. This setup has provided my system with a very efficient and cool way to revamp my aging pc case. Filters on all intakes as well. Love it !
I've always wondered if Noctua has even considered the fact that removing the ugly brown from their fans would boost sales drastically.... I would much rather have another brands black fan than a brown noctua just because of appearance.
The Rat Prince I use the fans that came with my NZXT S340 case and an NZXT X61 cooler mounted on the front and my temperatures are great. I feel noctua fans are overhyped.
MercilessHobo they're quiet, powerfull and good für overclocking without watercooling... thats it, if you don't like the colours ... then don't buy it, but you can*t ignore their performance...
I love the new color on these, works well in an all white or all black build, without making it just look boring, plus the fans will still stand out as Noctua. Gray is my favorite color, and monochrome is a simple color scheme which these fans will fit into perfectly. Typically a monochrome build wont have the gray, just some white and some black components, so these help fill the gap nicely.
Noctua may be quiet but their fans are still not the best ones,i mean you can find other fans like gentle typhoons and other nidec fans that have bigger motor assembly, heavier and thicker design and more sturdiness to it.they might not be as quiet but they are definitely going to be more "server grade".Cannot say the same about the industryppc ones though.
Thanks for turning down the volume on the intro. Every time I'd have to turn down the volume because it was always louder than the introduction to the video.
They've added the 120mm static pressure fan since this video was made. I've got two of the 140mm Redux fans in front of my case, one 120mm for the exhaust, and replaced the ugly semi-translucent black fan on my Hyper 212 with the static pressure 120 Redux, all PWM. I like them, except one of the 140mm doesn't run below 40% power, whereas the other 140 and the 120s do run basically all the way down to 1%.
***** The pressure & Flow is WAY better than the Silent typhoons. I replaced 3x Ap-14s and the Pressure fan moves a lot more air. Same DBA and dropped my temps 3C. I do have a double thick 360 rad though.
In my upgraded mid tower, I installed a Noctua 92mm NF-A9-PWM as the rear case fan. I also installed a Noctua NH-U9S CPU cooler, having the same NF-A9-PWM fan. I chose Noctua 'cause I concluded that their products would perform very well. The modded case, allowing cooling air to be drawn ONLY from the front and bottom, slightly biased towards the right/mobo side. Both the 92mm Noctua case fan, and the single 92mm Noctua, CPU, (i7-8086K stock), fan were running my extra silent fan curve, with the case fan running 105 - 120 rpm faster. Max CPU load temps were 15 - 25°C below stock temps. Excellent!
I love the brown color scheme. It’s like a badge of honor that it doesn’t fit with the rest of my build, because you KNOW what it is and you KNOW it’s good.
I'm ok with this, you can get the older model for the Pressure optimized fan and hide it between the radiator and the computer case, while for the airflow you need to put them in sight like the back of the case, then you can get the greyish reduz airflow 120mm
I prefer the tan and brown over the two-tone grey. I actually love the standard Noctua colour-scheme the only problem is no one makes parts to compliment it. I wish MoBo manufacturers started making Noctua themed boards.
got one of the 140mm fans in my power supply (the original fan died but the psu still works fine) its the only fan i could find thats powerful enough to cool my psu and its been doing so without any issues for like 2 years now
The best thing Noctua could do, would be to bring out a set of fan's based on the (at this time) ugly brown lineup and color it black with maybe exchangeble rubber mounts in different colors.
On the topic of pressure optimized and air-flow optimized fans, could you do an episode of "As Fast as Possible" discussing the differences and benefits of both?
100% agree. C'mon Noctua. I love your fans and want to put another 6 in my future case that I'll get in 7 months, but the price is just too much to fork over. Fix this lineup so I can have 6 extra noctua fans please!
And thats the reason why I either stick with Corsair or NoiseBlockers... around the same price.. around the same performance.. but much better looking.
Agreed, I'd love to use noctua fans but Corsair fans look great, have SP and AF fans and always look good. LED's make the corsair fans stand out for me.
Spencer Funk the SP and AF fans are fine if you have fan controller's. I have seen water cooled computers with purely SP and AF fans, and they are on the Linus's standard of silent (which is really quiet). Ronny Finseth NoiseBlockers, the good ones (the ones around the same price as Noctuas) are also about 1500 to 2000 RPM, which is what Noctua fans are.
Wait, 9 years ago? I have been shopping for case fans plenty over the past couple years. This week I am building a budget PC and this is the first I have ever come across this line of Noctua fans 😅 P.s. I ended up ordering the 120mm NF-P12
Watched TTLs video on these already and I agree with both of you, not being able to kit out my entire rig with the same style of fans is a big turn off from these just like with their new top of the line series (min rotation speed is too high), which is why I've started replacing my 'retiring to other rigs' Akasa Apaches with Corsair (started with a 120mm AF HP) which also have the sweet colour rings. Oh Noctua, many of us love you, but you make it SO hard for us to give you our money instead of just our caveat-ed recommendations.
I'm a big proponent of the redux idea - and it makes sense that they won't be shooting themselves in the foot by undercutting their own products...I want noctua performance for my watercooling, at bare minimum price...Might as well splurge and get the real deal.
I think the idea is that if you want a pressure-optimised 120mm fan you could still get the NF-P14r since it has 120mm mounting holes. EDIT: What I really want is an airflow-optimised 140mm though, they don't offer that at all.
I would agree with the issue on the SP fan, mostly due to some/ maybe most people moving to either Custom Water Loop, or a Self Contained Water Loop. There are even air CPU coolers that do better with SP fans.
I bought two of these P14-1200 last week, and returned them the same day. They both ticked. not exaggerating either. The first one was OK sitting on the desk at 5V, however once installed ticked quite audibly. 7V was considerably louder, and 12V - don't even go there. The second fan was worse, and even on desktop ticked badly at 5V.
I loved the other Noctua release of fans. But these.. Nah.. I would perfer the old noctua fans the brownish ones. Cause actually. Those look great. But never fit in, in any system build. If only the old ones where repainted to some fitting colors, like Blue, red, green, purple and such! :) thumbs up LinusTechTips and keep up your great work! :D
Gratz Noctua on giving us fans that are not ugly and are affordable. Grey colour scheme will go with black cases which are common place and what I buy. As for performance I will need to see charts to understand better what these are like compared to the more expensive versions by Noctua and other fans out there. Still one thing Noctua ... Seriously wth is stopping you from going all black?
Seems to me like the redux-lineup is more aimed at people with aircoolers. High-end cpu-aircoolers already use mostly 140mm-fans, so the pressusre-optimized 140 is a good fit, and for the rest of the case the airflow-optimized 120s should be fine.
At least at that price, people will jump on it when it hit the stores here. The NF-P14 and NF-S12B were great fans, especially the NF-P14 since many people are not exactly satisfied with the newer NF-A14 and NF-A15 and would rather have the NF-P14 in square frame, and now they do. Especially people who buy the H110. Same complain though, we want the NF-P12 redux (same complain to Corsair, SP140 please). They probably not selling that right now because the non-redux one is not out of production yet, not even the 3 pin version, probably they don't want to hurt their sales yet.
I think Linus is absolutely right about the Redux series. Noctua is a great company with high quality products and leaving out a pressure optimized model doesn't seem to match Noctuas otherwise thoughtful decisions.
Just ordered my i7 4790k and a H100i, was going to get two noctua redux fans for it but since they aren't radiator optimised ill just use the stock fans until there is a pressure optimised 120mm redux fan, eh maybe ill buy some normal ones later ill choose when i decide if the stock corsair h100i fans are as bad as people say or not :D
they work well in a black and grey themed system tho. still super silent, still noctua, still uber performance compared to most other options...and they actually cost the same here as the newest version of the corsair af-series. who wants led in a black and grey system anyway;)
It's probably like you said, they don't want to cannibalise their own sales, the NF-F12 and NF-P12 are their best sellers, either alone or on heatsinks, so they don't want to, effectively, let them go for cheaper.
you can use 2 noctua nf-p14r redux (140mm) for your radiator, because they are without frame and mount over 120mm retention pins used in noctua radiators. and they're pwm.. so i don't see the point of your complaint.
I was going to get corsair performance fans, I'd consider getting the Noctua 120 redux airflow fans instead. I already have pressure optimized Noctua fans and they work much better than stock corsair pressure fans that came with my H80i.
i rather enjoy the color scheme but the fact that there is still no 200mm is a deal breaker for me. i tend to lean towards the " all one brand" when it comes to my fans. i actually would have liked to see them have been an all white design, something one can dye effectively without using paint and thereby unbalancing the product.
I got the H440 case and got the Brown/tan 120 mm airflows for the front intake (not visible at all) and a pressure 140 mm redux for my x41 kraken because i dont want to ruin the whole look of my system with the regular fans. Good compromize i hope.
+Will Ozellman Where did you mount the X41 on that case? The top? I might consider doing something similar, since I was planning on using that case. Although some of the cases from CES are making me reconsider.
Mounted it in the middle slot in the top as an exhaust. Works well however i would not recommend the case. Alot of screw threads broke for no apparent reason and also one of the front usb3 ports doesnt work. The case was the only dissappointing part of the build,
Aww dang, that stinks. Thanks for the heads up though! I'll probably go with one of the cases they reviewed from CES then. Some pretty cheap nice-looking cases coming out.
Or the can just offer their regular fans in brown and black. Brown plastic isnt any wundercolor or something, they perform just as good if they purge them from black plastic.. And it woulndt canbalize because they are the same fans, just black or grey or white, whatever floats their boat. I think it has to do with branding. Tey are different and that keeps people talking. Once they feel their brand is strong enough they will start offering other collors i think. There has te be something behind it. Because its costing them money atm.
I am preparing to swap out my case to get better cooling and was looking for fans to go with it and I can not bring my self to pay that extra premium for a less noise and a little more heat so this is disappointing. The AF 120's still seem to be my best bet.
Thinking about getting them for a rendering rig. Even thinking about just getting a couple to plug into my main rig, and mount them on a little slab for laptop cooling outside of my case (HP laptop melted internally, I fixed it Frankenstein style and now it sits idly on a desk for my girlfriend to occasionally game on)
In short, air flow (Corsair's AF series, for example) fans prioritize the net movement of air in a case (intake, exhaust fans) and pressure fans (Corsair's SP fans) are usually used in conjunction with a radiator unit for a pull/push/push-pull configuration.
Airflow optimized fans are designed to be mounted in PC cases to "fill" the case with fresh, cool air, while static pressure fans offer airflow in one direction, and with more force. Airflow-optimized fans are better for the fan mounts on your case, whereas SP fans are better suited for more restrictive situations, such as radiators, heatsinks, and in front of hard drive cages
Here's another way to think of it: Airflow fans move air like a shotgun fires - everywhere Static pressure fans push air through thicker and denser objects with force, like a sniper
Pressure is for penetrate over dificult flow, such as radiator, a bay full of HDDs/SSDs, a bunch of cables or any obstacle. Full airflow is for open areas where you just need the air to travel far, such as botton fan to blow air to the up exaust fan.
Grey fans would look ok on silver heatsinks, but for rads and most cases black is more like a "one for all" solution so i dont know why they didnt do the cheaper line black.. Still: brown fans are their trademark so it wouldn't matter if they doesn't match the rest of the build, it is like having a brand logo!
I just wish Corsair would make a 140mm Static Pressure fan for my H110. Currently using their 140mm High Airflow fan, cools the rad fine but SP would do better and I'd like to keep a common theme.
It's been 8 years, and I finally saved up enough to afford 2 of these fans. Hopefully they'll be worth the wait, and still worth it in 2022!
How expensive were they for you? I'm looking on amazon and it's £12

Well I have a 280mm radiator that I was going to fit with NF-A14s but these look like a convenient way of buying cheaper Noctua fans :)
In australia, these are more expensive than ones with rubber screws and more sophisticated ones from corsair or other brands.
Not gonna lie..i miss this kind of linus tech tips. the kitchen setting was pretty badass

i really like the new color scheme. i wish they had fans that worked in all the categories.
I think Linus is absolutely right about the Redux series. Noctua is a great company with high quality products and leaving out a pressure optimized model doesn't seem to match Noctuas otherwise thoughtful decisions.
Just ordered my i7 4790k and a H100i, was going to get two noctua redux fans for it but since they aren't radiator optimised ill just use the stock fans until there is a pressure optimised 120mm redux fan, eh maybe ill buy some normal ones later ill choose when i decide if the stock corsair h100i fans are as bad as people say or not :D
personally i like the old color scheme it says look i'm nuctua i'm the best
nice change of colour for the redux but i'd rather stick with the new PPC or the classic ones for that extra performance
3 years later and the lineup didn't change.
They need a 120mm pressure optimized and a 140mm airflow fan in a decent looking color/form scheme so that I would consider them.
they work well in a black and grey themed system tho. still super silent, still noctua, still uber performance compared to most other options...and they actually cost the same here as the newest version of the corsair af-series. who wants led in a black and grey system anyway;)
I like the brown. This guy needs a voice modulator.
The properly colored brown and tan looks better than the Grey in my eyes
You aren't overreacting. I was thinking the same thing when I first saw their Redux lineup
I might be one of the few who likes the old colour scheme better. Anyone into pces can recognize a Noctua fan with there great reputation.
aw man from the thumb nail i thought the color would be brushed clear plastic which in my opinion would've looked a lot better then grey
It's probably like you said, they don't want to cannibalise their own sales, the NF-F12 and NF-P12 are their best sellers, either alone or on heatsinks, so they don't want to, effectively, let them go for cheaper.
Thank you for tuning down the intro volume :-)
Finally some cheaper Noctua fans... Now for some dealers in the Philippines...
you can use 2 noctua nf-p14r redux (140mm) for your radiator, because they are without frame and mount over 120mm retention pins used in noctua radiators. and they're pwm.. so i don't see the point of your complaint.
I was going to get corsair performance fans, I'd consider getting the Noctua 120 redux airflow fans instead. I already have pressure optimized Noctua fans and they work much better than stock corsair pressure fans that came with my H80i.
I like the black and brown. I would buy the industrial fans if they had lower RPM models and weren't as expensive as the industrial fans.
i rather enjoy the color scheme but the fact that there is still no 200mm is a deal breaker for me. i tend to lean towards the " all one brand" when it comes to my fans. i actually would have liked to see them have been an all white design, something one can dye effectively without using paint and thereby unbalancing the product.
They were the first thing that popped up on amazon, work good for me, but when they hit %100 they are loud but quieter than my one corsair fan.
I prefer the tan look personally. I'd like them to do a Henry Ford though.
I was like " Great, Im going for watercooling in august"
Linus " There is no pressureoptimized 120mm fan"
I " You have to be kidding me"
Or the can just offer their regular fans in brown and black.
What the heck? :D
Your comment doesn´t even deal a little bit with mine :D
Holllllyyy shit !
look at linus's eye!
OMG, THAT LENS YOU USE IS SOOOO SHARPPPP!!!
I am preparing to swap out my case to get better cooling and was looking for fans to go with it and I can not bring my self to pay that extra premium for a less noise and a little more heat so this is disappointing. The AF 120's still seem to be my best bet.
Thinking about getting them for a rendering rig. Even thinking about just getting a couple to plug into my main rig, and mount them on a little slab for laptop cooling outside of my case (HP laptop melted internally, I fixed it Frankenstein style and now it sits idly on a desk for my girlfriend to occasionally game on)
Quest Thanks for the life story pal....
Hey could somebody please explain the differences and uses of All-flow and pressure fans. Thanks in advance
Here's another way to think of it:
Airflow fans move air like a shotgun fires - everywhere
Static pressure fans push air through thicker and denser objects with force, like a sniper
Larry Sheng Wow you just made me feel like poop. Your explanation was way shorter and better lol
I'm going to buy the industrial too my high end 4K hackintosh later this year
PAINT ALL THE FANS
I love the noctua brown color :D
I just wish Corsair would make a 140mm Static Pressure fan for my H110. Currently using their 140mm High Airflow fan, cools the rad fine but SP would do better and I'd like to keep a common theme.
I liked more the brown ones. :(
Finally they have the NF P12 redux model released, in 2018
As of 2022 the NF-P12 Redus is nwo available :)
