      Agreed. The movie sucked. If I have to read a book to understand the sequel to a trilogy I watched 20 years ago, well... fuck the movie makers. It's lazy merchandising. They did everything wrong. Disney is the EA of movies. They cut out pieces of the story and sell it to you as comic books and novels.

    Bombs dropping ... in Space. Firing a Laser like a Mortar ... in Space. Leia becoming Space Jesus. Admiral Ackbar being replaced by Admiral Gender Studies. The Asian chick (she was so forgettable I can't even remember her name) "sacrificing" herself to stop Finn from saving the day. Losing all of your fleet and 99% of your command structure and still claiming victory while chastising the only guy that achieved something in the movie for losing a few bombers to destroy a fleetkiller.

      Nuke Detonator Thanks for that little strawman at the end there but I'd agree that those things were stupid as well. I'm just saying that The Last Jedi managed to condense all of that into one movie plus more, stretching the bounds of believability. I won't knock anyone who enjoyed the movie in spite of that as I still managed to find it mildly entertaining.

    • @NukeDetonator
      @NukeDetonator 6 років тому

      Lol those are literally the same things littered throughout Star Wars. The fact that you find something dumb because it isn't believable in a Star Wars movie makes you sound like an idiot. There are the same amount of dumb unrealistic shit in each Star Wars movie but yea sure its condensed all into this movie(even though you dont give examples except for two, and I can name more than two from the OT). Why even go to a Star Wars movie and then nitpick the science in it when the other previous installments shit all over that? It is not a legitimate criticism and the fact that you're watching a Star Wars movie expecting anything more than that is dumb too.

      Merely _contemplate_ killing his nephew, but... yeah. Unless there was some event in his past we don't see, where he had a similar choice and it ended in disaster, it's a rather weird change from "I can find the good in even the worst of us" to "I can't take any chances!"
      *refusing to leave a planet because you fucked up*
      Well, it's more that he's totally lost any faith in his capabilities and, as he says, he wants to end the Jedi for good.

    The whole "everybody can be a Jedi" thing is a very literal, post-modern interpretation of the star wars universe. star wars is meant to be mythical, archetypal, like a dream. It's not supposed to be a literal commentary about contemporary social mores. That type of commentary is relevant for about 5 minutes, archetypes are deeply embedded in the human psyche, which is why they still resonate so deeply 2 generations later

    The "They're setting it up" argument is not a good argument. First off, this is the SECOND movie of 3, we should be carrying forward the plot not being put in a stand still, "setting up" more of the same and second, alot was set up in TFA and RJ tried so hard to make sure no one got to have fun guessing what might happen that he threw everything away that was being set up in the prior movie. The only thing this movie did different than other Star Wars movies was not matter to the whole storyline or move it along in anyway other than killing off Luke in a lame ass way. Nothing fucking happens in this movie. They get chased, Luke break dances around Kylo and wipes his shoulder off like a cartoon character then dies, and then they get chased more with some future promise that Star Wars is going the Marvel route with Broom Kid being the first of the new Xmen. This movie is trash and I haven't heard one good argument defending it. Saying it's bold, new, and different isn't an argument. Why is it? How it it? Also, everyone agrees that the kanto bite bullshit is bad, even fans of the movie so how the hell can you argue the movie is anything more than alright if 1/3 of the movie is agreeable trash.

    • @NukeDetonator
      @NukeDetonator 6 років тому +2

      Seemed like you had your own set expectations and that ultimately failed you.
      SO this did nothing to advance plot? Are you serious? Did you even watch this movie? You're saying nothing happened at all in this movie? So the force wasn't expanded upon in several ways, Lukes arc didnt come to an end (I like how you say it was lame how he died yet he actually died to protect his sister and the Resistance, yet conveniently forget that Yoda died cracking a joke and telling Luke the plot so it could progress), Kylo and Reys arc went nowhere, and the Resistance wasn't reduced to 7 people? Not even in the originals were the good guys so numbered. You haven't heard one good argument defending it? Lmao then you dont read obviously. The Kanto Bite sequence was 7% of the movie quite fucking whining, it wasn't that bad. Also there are fans of the prequels which have longer and cringier scenes in them and yet there are fans of those. Its new in the fact that it takes some cliche star wars plot lines and turns them cleverly on their head while expanding the force in some ballsy ways (some work some dont: Leia space poppies-No Luke Projection-Yes Creating mass through the force-Yes). There are some legitimate problems with this movie, but it is in no way garbage.

    The problem isn’t building something new it’s shitting on established lore. Set things up for the last movie? Why shouldn’t we expect a high bar? It’s from a trilogy that created the bar. Should we expect nothing short of perfection from a series this well established? Disney wanted to buy the franchise they knew what they were getting into when they rebooted the damn franchise. The low high bar defense doesn’t sit with me because of that

    TJ is right. My main problem with the movie is the choices many of the characters made. For instance, the general whosits, she refused to tell anyone about her big plan. Her big plan would have mean the death of all involved but luckily Luke shows up to save the day. She had no way of knowing he would show up. Then gives everybody the "see, I told you so" look. And her being quiet about her "plan" caused a mutiny. etc, etc. I could go on but...

    the movie was just bad, filled with plot holes (whole chase sequence, arcing lazers?, dropbombing in space), character assassination of Luke (the same luke who would try and redeem vader would then jump to trying to murder his nephew over nothing), pointless sideplot with finn and rose, snoke wasted, rey's parent mystery wasted, Akbar wasted, the logic of the purple haired commander in not telling anyone her plan causing everything to screw up, Leia god powers, and Knights of Ren??? (where are they?)
    the whole point of a second film in a trilogy is to continue the story set points set up in the first, this movie throws out every single story point from the first movie with an FU to the fans and JJ abrams.

    I hated the last Jedi because Rey experiences 0 conflict
    She’s strong with the force sure but she has no training, same as Luke in the first movie but he only defeated anything in episode 6. Luke loses his hand, gets his ass handed to him by some screeching Arabs and needs years of refinement to defeat Vader and even then he didn’t even kill anyone, Vader kills Palpetine and succumbs to his injuries from the force lightning.
    Rey can sneak around unseen on star killer base, knows how to operate fucking everything on the millennium falcon despite having no piloting experience, fights off a way more powerful and trained Kylo Ren. And somehow I’m supposed to believe an emotional, wild, undisciplined Kylo Ren and an emotional, wounded, untrained, undisciplined Rey fucking wipe SNOKE AND 8 FORCE SENSITIVE PRAETORIAN GAURDS WITH LIGHTSABER RESISTANT ARMOR AND YEARS OF TRAINING BECAUSE PLOT?! BULLSHIT SOMEONE FIRE SOMEONE ELSE!

    • @NukeDetonator
      @NukeDetonator 6 років тому +10

      "Lightsaber resistant armor" *Rey and Kylo repeatedly stab clean through armored guards*
      In Episode 7 we see that Rey is very sufficient in warding off foe with her staff which we see her clumsily translate into the lightsaber fight with an injured Kylo at the end of that movie. In Episode 8 we see that she practices moves with her staff in front of a rock and then, a little more fluid this time, translates those moves with a lightsaber. Kylo is established to be reckless and not sufficiently trained, and in Episode 8 we see that he was a very young when he turned and can be assumed that he received limited training from Luke before he received some training from Snoke. In Episode 8 he does not complete his training, but it is established that he has enough raw power to scare Luke with Rey having the same raw power. I also love how Rey says to Snoke "you're underestimation of us will be your downfall" right before he underestimates Kylo and dies.
      "knows how to operate fucking everything on the millennium falcon despite having no piloting experience"
      Even though in episode seven Finn says "we need a pilot" and Rey says "we've got one" talking about herself, we see that she uses her knowledge of old Empire tech (at the beginning of episode 7 we see her collect a fuse) later in the film where she pulls out a fuse in Starkiller base. We also see Rey express that it is difficult to fly the Millennium Falcon without a co-pilot and then smashes her whole village to bits before clumsily flying it into the air. The millennium falcon also was around since she was a child which she also knew where Uncaar Plot (or whatever that guys name is) stole it from and who stole from them etc. Also to mention she knows what was modified on it and is able to remove it later.
      The other argument of Rey sneaking around is a nitpick and not really genuine criticism because I can turn around and say that its bullshit that the Stormtroopers miss %100 of the time in ANH and it would be the same type of argument. All of what I stated was in the films and I am sorry that you didnt pay attention.

      Cortosis-weave armor is the lightsaber-resistent armor, not what the guards were wearing. They had resistent gauntlets and weapons. Not armor. And just because it can resist something doesn't mean it 100% cannot be destroyed by it.
      There was a Star Wars comic issue where one of the characters went against Vader with a Cortosis weapon and was still struck down by Vader.

How do you not go after their only means of escape first? Poe said it himself "these things are fleet killers" so why would they make such a stupid move like that? I'm not the best judge of this, since I'm not really a huge Star Wars fan, but my problem with the movie was the goddamn plot holes. Why the fuck didn't the purple haired chick not tell Poe about her plan from the beginning? What did the movie even accomplish? How the fuck did Princess Leia survive getting sucked into space? The writing was a mess.

    The "bad movie" arguments were superior to the "good movie" arguments in every way. They didn't overly appeal to emotion, they were logical and showed train of thought, they asked good questions to which there are no good answers. That last part only doesn't have answers because this movie is trash. We waited 40 freaking years to see Luke again, and they make him a sniveling broken weakling that almost immediately dies?! The saviour of the univers... dies...like he's a punk loser... after 40 years of waiting. This whole franchise deserves to die. Only then will they sell the rights to someone else who can remake this movie the way it DESERVES to be made.

    I would go far as to say that The Last Jedi is the best film in the Star Wars franchise so far.
    The Canto Bight scenes were not a "distracting sub-plot", it was where the main plot went while the Resistance hangs about uselessly in space waiting to be destroyed. It showed the injustice in the galaxy and the motivations of ordinary people who joined the Rebellion/Resistance like Rose. All of that was taken for granted in the original trilogy, to its detriment. And as Scotty says, the Canto Bight scenes show that the Rebellion/Resistance isn't just made of space wizards and princesses, but regular and downtrodden people whose beliefs lead them to heroic actions. That's the key message of the film at the end, where the Resistance is all but destroyed, Luke is dead but Leia remarks that they have all they need to rebuild.
    After The Force Awakens I was dreading another soft-reboot of Empire Strikes Back. I can't wait for what follows The Last Jedi.

    I don't even think the best Star Wars movies were that great, so I didn't go into this movie with very high expectations, and yet I still thought it was dogshit. The character's motivations didn't make sense, most of them didn't develop in any meaningful way, and there was barely any world building, and what was there also didn't make sense. This movie felt small and pointless, but I don't blame the filmmakers... they did OK with what they had. It's just that this franchise is incredibly tired.

  • @IlljayGT

    Fan Fiction, that is all these movies are. They have no grand vision behind them, no overall direction for the characters, just people who sat there and said "wouldn't it be cool if that happened?" and that starts for every movie anew. I felt like this was the most amateurishly written wasted potential I've ever seen. The problem is not all with the bold steps and risks, it's the god awful execution.

    The problem with Scotty’s defense is not that the movie didn’t take risks, but that the person writing the plot and the characters is too thick to make this change of formula effective. This can be applied to almost all scenes in the movie, which is that the implementation of this paradigm shift in Star Wars is hollow because there is no effective discussion of philosophy.

  • @awesometealover
    @awesometealover 6 років тому

    I personally loved the Last Jedi, I'd go as far as to say it may be my favourite Star Wars movie. I liked to see Luke continue the tradition of his mentors Obi wan and Yoda by disappearing when he fucked up. I loved seeing the force-skype scene between Rey and Kylo Ren, as I feel their relationship and the conflict between them was one of the most intriguing aspects of the film, and seeing it play out was extremely entertaining. I liked the humour (which some call over the top and Marvel-like). I thought the entire story of showing how massive failure, distrust, and miscommunication can be to be fantastic! I loved seeing the heroes fight and fight but keep losing because of simple things like miscommunication because it upped the stakes so much.
    Are there problems? Obviously, but I feel like there are problems with all Star Wars movies. And maybe it was just this film particually catered to my tastes and not to others.

    1) God dying outside of their body, so that magic can be shared inside reality
    2) Safety destroying danger, so that safety can be exposed as the true source of danger
    3) Absence attacking itself, so that absence can give itself a location
    4) Violence meeting violence, so that the opposite of violence can meet reality's original disconnection
    5) God having no ability to see, so that the opposite of God doesn't have to fear God

    Honestly, I think this movie was great. I'd even say it's the best Star Wars movie after the OT, maybe even on the same level as RotJ.
    The fact that the sideplot didn't lead anywhere - kind of irrelevant. It's still for the most part enjoyable, and there's no point in overanalysing a movie to the point where you say "well this didn't move the plot forward" - after all, it's about the journey and being entertained throughout, not about arriving at a certain destination.
    The nostalgia, I feel, was extremely toned down in this one. The only thing that struck me as purely nostalgic was the whole Yoda thing, but they made it so amazing that it actually doesn't really matter.
    And Rey's character - honestly, I think they did some interesting things with her. We finally get some motivation for her to be within the story - even if it's just "I want to understand my powers better" - and there's an interesting way she discovers herself in the force, with this whole mirror thing that's pretty metaphoric. What I disliked was her connection with Kylo, since it kind of removes from him being intimidating as a villain, but that's Disney for you, I guess.
    In general, I felt that the best part of the movie was how visible the "star wars ring theory" was in this. There's metaphoric connections to the other episodes everywhere, but they're not drilled home as nostalgic references like in TFA, but rather seem meaningfull in context. I especially enjoyed the little slave boy being a nod to young anakin and thus possibly sequelbait in some form.
    I also liked that we finally get to see a dark side guy straight up kill off his mentor to take the power. I think that was needed to drive home the point of recklessness and remove the feel of Kylo being a little emo bitch that TFA left behind.
    And lastly - the whole bit with Rose and Finn in the end, with her ramming his speeder and all, that everyone seems to love to hate on, was imo maybe one of the best scenes of the movie. They showed that despite all the inspiration and hope and moral righteousness you might have, sacrificing yourself for a futile battle still is pointless, and that you should fight for a cause, not just to destroy your enemies. It was kind of the moral of the story, and it felt like a great payoff tbh
    Maybe it also helped that I liked the character of Rose and apparently no one else did, but...eh.

    RE 1: Scotty
    The problem with the themes are that they don't work on the themes well enough and add enough depth, if Ray was teaching people the ways of the force and showing others how to grasp the ideals of the evolving craft of new ideas or Luke having weaker force powers because of the holding on the old and inefficient ways of the force, THAT would make more sense. Rather than having two characters talk about the force and show a little bit of the old force user using some bad ass ability from the grave.

  • @sirthumple7494
    @sirthumple7494 6 років тому

    I don't necessarily agree that Kylo just wants to be another Vader. In TFA, yes he wanted to be like Vader. But even in the beginning of this movie we see him begin to shed that off as he destroys his mask. And even later on, after he kills Snoke, he tells Rey that everything, the Jedi, the Sith, the First Order, the Rebellion should be done away with, and changed into something more.
    Rey certainly wasn't that great of a character, though I'd say she was far from underdeveloped. When she first arrived on the planet she thought the Force was just some tool to be used. But as she went along further she began to understand from Luke that it's everything, it's called the Force for a reason. She begins to respect it more, learns to control it better. She even makes the mistake of believing that she could turn Kylo from the dark side because of her naivety and ambition. She was too reckless, and has begun to learn from it.
    Though I do agree that Finn and Rose were fairly weak characters, though I did like her interactions with Finn at first.

    When people ask me if I like "The Last Jedi" my answer is "sort of", I think half of the movie is great and the other half is boring. I agree that the weakest part of this movie is the entire Finn/Casino Planet sub-plot, it's only purposes are to give characters we don't really care about something to do and create more one scene creatures they can make toys of. I don't have any problem with Luke going into hiding, as matter of fact that seems to be what Jedi do when things go bad, remember that's exactly what Obi-wan and Yoda do at the end of "Revenge of the Sith".

    This movie was garbage. Reason? They invited the nostalgia by continuing Luke's storyline, and including shit characters, killed him off, and said, "hey get over it."
    It obviously did something different, it killed off the main character, Luke. And told us to fuck off, we got your money.
    End of the day, these sequels are written by too many people, and it shows. Poor writting will be star war's downfall.
