Hello! He’s so cute! You did a great job! I have some tips that might help you for your next 3d pen art project :) I would use a wood burning tool instead of a soldering tool. Wood burning tools are shorter in length (more control and you can get hard parts better) and come with many tips while a soldering tool don’t. You want a good/high quality wood burning tool that your able to control the temp. But you must make sure it’s stainless steel and not brass or it’ll make your project turn brownish streaks. Also need a really small torch gun or torch lighter (I’m not sure what they’re called sorry) you can attach parts ends by melting whatever it is you want to attach and it also will help get a smooth surface after wood burning and filing.

There is different plastics used in 3d printing. PLA is a softer low heat plastic vs ABS which takes much more heat to melt. PLA starts smoothing out at around 60°C. And ABS is close to 80°C. One positive of ABS is you can smooth it with acetone. Hope this helps! My toddler loves your squirtle.

This is beautiful (and I'm not even a Pokemon fan)! I actually loved it with the texture of the 3D pen, before you smoothed it out with the iron. I'd love to see you do a Harry Potter character. You could do one with a big head and small body (like a Funko Pop style). P.s. The iron is used in sewing to iron out creases and hems in fiddly, small areas!
Constructive feedback: Maybe you could've done it all in white and painted the features onto it it would've maybe been less expensive and easier maybe try it next time to see if it works! But other than that I loved how it turned out! If you just buy a bunch of white filament ( or if you're like me and everything starts looking the same after an hour , buy pink ) then paint it up, you don't have to worry about burn marks then and can smooth it out with a wood burner as much as you like. Also you can use any type of varnish after you put paint on so long as its pla filament you painted on. I'm not sure about ABS but I doubt it will behave under varnish or paint.

wait i think a youtuber used the heating tool and then sanded it afterwards, and rinsed it to remove the “dust” from the sanding you could try it and i hope that could help!

This video is so old but the reason why there are brownish stuff when you used the heater/iron is because it's not made out of stainless steel. If you manage to find an iron made by stainless steel, it won't leave brownish stuff :)
If I remember, somebody actually used sandpaper, *sandpaper,* to smooth out the thing. So you could use that as an alternative if you can Edit 2: well, a nailsander works I guess. And hey, you actually used sandpaper! Edit: so you have theorized that the melting point depends on the brand. However, I have seen a UA-camr melt Crayola (it is a requirement for a toy) and realizing that even if it’s the same brand, cool colors tend to melt slower than the warm ones. Since brown and light yellow are warm colors, I guess they melt faster because they are... well, warm colors, not because of the brand. But hey, that’s just a theory.
