Your method was really great to manually adjust the speed for the effect (and of course, making a dynamic speed change) but the basic part is to use the "Overall Animation" then use "Flicker" tho lol

Did this before with our movie trailer project,syncning with the beats is really hard,when the music indicator does not show where the beats are...you have to repititively listen to the music and memorise how many beats,when,etc its all about timing...
