  • In April 2018, Hampshire College's R. W. Kern Center officially completed the Living Building Challenge (LBC). So, I made a massive chain reaction machine that demonstrates how the Kern Center fulfills all the requirements of the LBC. I spent 8 weeks building this machine, and it took 103 fails to get it to work all the way from start to finish. The Kern Center Machine is my largest machine yet, so I hope you enjoy!

    The Kern Center is a fully sustainable, net-zero building, and a "living building." LBC certification is the highest honor that a building of its kind can receive. Requirements of the LBC are divided into seven sections, or Petals: Materials, Beauty, Water, Place, Energy, Health & Happiness, and Equity. The Kern Center had to fulfill the requirements of each of these 7 Petals in order to be officially certified.
    This machine is split into 7 different sections (one for each Petal), each section containing tricks that convey the requirements of that Petal. For example, the dump truck in the Materials section represents the fact that all the construction materials were locally sourced, and the solar panels in the Energy section represent the fact that the building is entirely powered by solar energy.

    That was SOOOOO good!!! You nailed making a machine that meets the perfect amount of complexity for this, where the machine is impressive to a machine community member or your typical, everyday viewer. I loved how this machine looked and how well everything worked. The tricks that stood out to me were the spinning marble spiral, which was a genius idea that I've had in the past but never tried executing and you executed it perfectly. I also loved the dump truck trick and especially the part with the two silver cups and the yellow ball. Very impressive. The Beauty trick blew my mind and reminded me a lot of Spicing it Up. You took a common machine trick that was impressive on its own and rotated the can so the rod that pushed the ball into the can became the track for the ball? Genius! The multi use gear trick was genius as well and honestly one of the coolest machine tricks I have ever seen. Another favorite trick of mine was the chaotic solar panel sequence, which just looks awesome. A ball bouncing off of a moving board is always kind of sketchy, and I love how perfectly you pulled that off, along with the amazing hair dryer trickshot. And the battery autotilt was pure genius as well with off all the complex multi uses. I also loved the ball being shot into the funnel and the funnel being reused. That was a really clever idea as well. I also thought that the slinky trick was impressive and was surprised that you didn't really talk about that in your BTS.
    Overall this machine was one of my favorites of yours and in general and I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. I'll add any additional thoughts that I have to this comment later, but all in all, amazing job. The eight weeks of work you put into this machine were well worth it.

      I don't even know what to say about this except thank you! Thank you for taking the time to write out your thoughts about all your favorite tricks. It's so fun reading your thoughts on certain things, and seeing that someone else noticed the little details that I worked so hard on. I love reading your comments so much, and thank you!!

      I KNOW, RIGHT?? I even surprised myself at how beautiful (get it? Beauty section?) this trick ended up looking, since it was inspired by a trick that has lost all of its appeal to me since I've seen it so many times. Visually, one of the nicest tricks in the machine in my opinion.

    I got quite a few 6 simple machine vibes from this. I love seeing your style combined with different objects besides the typical hot wheels tracks, ping pong balls, and knex. It gives variety, and it’s always cool to see how you use them in connection with your own style to make new interesting tricks. This machine is probably one of my favorites from you for that reason. Incredible work.

      CubixRubeGoldberg Creations You're right, there are a lot of similarities between this one and 6SMIO. I actually talk about that a little in the Behind the Scenes, but they're similar in style, size, and purpose. They were also uploaded on almost the same day, just two years apart!
      And yeah, I know I always say I'm bad about incorporating foreign objects, but I should probably stop saying that at this point. I love what my style becomes when I use objects outside the typical ones I use all the time.

    I know I'm late for writing a long comment but I was busy breaking physics in my very secret and not spoiled to you machine project. This is easily among the best projects you've ever worked on. I don't know for sure if it's my favourite machine of yours, but in terms of a professional project I believe this to be your best work. The ideas are fantastic, the themes well represented, and the layout/organization -make me a large nut.- If I could sum up my feelings of your machine style (I believe Carson's said this before but whatever) it would be *AAAAAAAAAAAAAA.* Every single machine you make, regardless of complexity or compactness, ends up having this satisfying flow to it, in which every aspect of the machine manages to captivate me. I know this is attributed to your elegant style/thought process and your natural ability to formulate ideas for connections that don't suck and them piece them together in literally any level of compactness imaginable, but honestly it's something I seriously admire as a machine builder (who struggles to do exactly that)
    JoJ™ Certified Tricks:
    ★ marble spinny boi 0:53
    Very clever idea to increase the speed of a marble spinning in a funnel by spinning the funnel itself. Extremely satisfying, and the large to small gear mechanism you have setup to do it is clean af
    ★ section of liquid icc tricks starting at 1:22
    I know from experience that water is complete ass to deal with in machines, so I was legit shocked when you revealed not just one but *two* water tricks for this project. They ended up being super smooth and seemingly reliable, so once again props to you for being j e s u s
    ★ s l o n k 2:37
    Reminds me of the slinky trick I did for CCC a while back, and I'm sure you made that comparison as well. Quick and simple, but visually pleasing, and I hope to see more mini s l o n k from you in the future!
    ★ large launch 3:04
    Similar to the launching trick I did back in 11I7, and I know you showed that clip in the bts so thanks for thiefing my chontent >:(. In all seriousness though I want more people to do vertical launch tricks they're dope but too uncommon in the community
    I genuinely loved all the tricks in this machine, but due to me not wanting to type for over an hour I only mentioned four of them, so hopefully that's enough to satisfy. Awesome work, hope you get an Æ+ on your assignment, and I can't wait to see the first episode of JOASS!

    ok here's the long-awaited comment
    0:53 love the use of the gear to get extra spin in the marble run, and how it also "energizes" the marble
    1:04 so many things happening at once is confusing but the timing is soooo perfect, makes it a cooler trick
    1:11 soooooo aesthetically pleasing. Best part of the trick is its smoothness, and very smart of you to use a ruler instead of a track
    1:24 never thought of water pushing a ping pong ball and rolling down multiple ramps - blows my water video out of the water..... hehe... seriously I don't understand how it was so easy for you to control the water
    1:28 even more water!! Using the weight to pull the bottle up completely to pour all the water in was clever
    1:35 so much k'nex I have no idea how this works except for that gears are used somehow. But it's extremely cool anyway
    1:43 very good take on the ball lift.
    1:50 also very cool. I love flippy combinations
    1:54 the best type of transition
    1:57 awesome knowing that you used the plug to release the car
    2:00 this is real, true scrappy building. I have thought of many ways to use things that look like random trash, but never to use the wire that connects to an electrical appliance. Very good idea
    2:05 you're a master of timing. Idk why you decided to add the complexity of having the track fall into place or having the bounce happen, but you did it successfully
    2:13 two fans in one machine, working at the same time? Blasphemy!
    2:14 reminds me of both toothpaste35 and pitagora suichi, interesting how they fall in place perfectly for a track
    2:20 definitely didn't see that coming. I'm wondering how you even managed to get the batteries to not roll in the first place before both reactions happened.
    2:27 roll is so satisfying
    2:33 this is the best type of multi use element
    2:38 tricks like this prove that you're a master of k'nex
    2:55 love how the whole trick gets revealed
    3:04 There's so much going on in one second, but the way the track falls into place is very elegant.
    3:11 Interesting take on the autotilt.
    Overall likely the best machine I've ever seen

    Dang this machine was just so good and so clean! My favorite parts were tricks with the foreign objects like the dump truck or the Gatorade bottle pouring water through that zig zag panel thing. I also loved the launchers that were throughout the machine, and things like when you moved the funnel, and the glass panes as dominoes was also very cool. The trick at 3:04 was pretty neat also.
    Overall, great machine and I can't wait to see more of your future machines! - also nice drone shot at the beginnig

    Wow this takes everything I love about your style (Your multi-use tricks and complexity) and amps it up even more with how visual some of the tricks were. There were so many insane launches and other risky tricks that it helps you appreciate this machine more. My favorite three tricks were the yard stick rick at 1:11, the spinny track trick at 1:40, and the multiple launches in a row at 2:05. Overall this is arguably your best machine trick wise but easily my favorite visual wise.

      I think your last point really sums up how I feel about this machine right now. I haven't decided whether or not I think it's my best machine, but I do think it is the most appealing visually. All the tricks you mentioned, and a few others, definitely have a really nice aesthetic to them, even though they are (in most cases) slightly simpler than what I'd make for machine in my signature compact & complex style.

    Another machine from you that's cleaner than a Kidz Bop album! I am LOVING this combo of complexity and cleanliness -- there's definitely not a dichotomy there because you pull both off with ease, and with timing tricks thrown in to boot! I know it's been said a lot, but one thing I really do love about your style is how your transitional tricks are very very cool in and of themselves (particular ideas that come to mind are the little kicker knex thing that facilitated the clothespin jump and the trigger sequence for the dump truck, as well as the sequence triggered by it, but there are so so many others). That being said, I love me a good timing trick simply because the complexity I tend to appreciate in machines is when the impulse is broken into multiple concurrent paths that then reunite, and timing in the mix is a big plus. To add to that, I love when they split and recombine _naturally_, if you know what I mean? Like it doesn't appear that you've gone out of your way to have two things occurring at once -- instead, you've taken a trick and had it naturally trigger two things and had those two paths then recombine naturally, and I love that so much!!
    Okay so that was a very long digression into something fairly simple -- aside from that, I would normally go through with time stamps and point out tricks I love but I have said much of what I'd like to say already. What I want to say most in this comment is that it may not seem like it, but I definitely notice the small details in the machines -- the small things that make it work, not just the flashy big tricks, and a lot of the time I appreciate those just as much, if not more, because they're often just as brilliant as the tricks themselves. Even something as simple as catching a bottle cap to prevent water from spraying, or a die to hold back the release for a weight, or a small pair of magnets to prevent motor death is an intrinsic part of the overall elegance of the machine, and it deserves to be appreciated because it's often the biggest testament to how much work you've put into a machine. The true labor in the machine isn't in the ideas -- it's in making them happen. Amazing machine, as always! I love your complex connections and I can't wait to see what you do in the future!

    • @jackofallspades98
      @jackofallspades98  6 років тому +1

      I'd have to say that the revelation about my connections being just as interesting as the main ideas is a fairly recent one, considering how long I'd say that's been true about my style. I think it may have been Joel who originally pointed it out, and since then it's been something I've consciously thought about while building. I'm not sure if that's actually changed my style at all, though. I agree with all the things you mentioned in your comment, particularly your point about timing tricks with natural split-offs, instead of several things happening at once for seemingly unrelated reasons. I also echo your point about the main ideas and motions being just as impressive (at least to machine builders, probably not to laymen) as the smaller mechanisms that allow those tricks to function perfectly and reliably. It's like two waves of amazement when I watch other builders' machines. The first wave of appreciation when I watch the surprising/elegant/clever motion of the trick itself for the first time, and the second wave of appreciation when I watch it in slow motion and dissect the trick more closely and figure out all the little levers and release mechanisms that work in the background.

    Yeah, you know I'm a sucker for elegance. This machine had so many lovely clean movements: my favourites are 0:53, 1:11, 1:35 (this is my favourite trick in the machine, the way it rotates around is just unbelievable, and I was not expecting this to have more than one use) 2:06, 2:37. A few other small things I'd like to appreciate, 2:07, the way the ball flies up at that curve is such a small little detail but it's so beautiful, like it's just so much greater than it just hitting a domino or something. I love your creative ways of just making connections!! 2:15 is seriously just so insane. 1:04 I'd like to note just how crazy precise those timings were, my goodness. I feel like there's so many small things to note about your machines that make it so enjoyable. I'll have to watch this again to find more fine details.. and one of the most important things about your machines that I feel doesn't really get mentioned enough: the perpendicular nature of it :DDD Simply makes the whole thing look beautiful, and it's definitely something I've got to do more in my future machines. My last machine, looking back, I'm a bit unhappy with how unaligned some things are... Ok pretty cool machine as usual.

    • @jackofallspades98
      @jackofallspades98  6 років тому +2

      I'm glad you mentioned the elegance of a lot of the tricks in this machine, it's definitely something I aimed for while making this. I'm surprised by your choice for your favorite trick in the machine, people seem to be really liking that trick more than I expected. Thank you so much for writing out all your thoughts about all the things you liked, it's really cool when other people notice the little details. That's what makes building complex ideas worth it to me, when people like you point out the little lever or release mechanism that made it all work.
      Of course this machine is all perpendicular! I wouldn't have it any other way! It really helps me pack more ideas into each space and it's the main reason I'm able to achieve such a high level of compactness in my other machines.

    Okay jeez. Your ability to create ginormous machines is incredible and they are executed so well.I absolutely love the deep meaning behind each of your design decisions and how they represent each of the seven petals of the machine. This machine was really clean and easy to follow and complex at the same time. I also think its wild how you gave me so many spoilers about the machine and STILL was able to surprise me. That just goes to show how huge this machine is. Anyway, top 5 time:
    5. 1:36- You're insane
    4. 2:38- Real clever multi-use of the slinky. It makes for a great side trick and looks super slick
    3. 3:00- SMOOTH. NICELY DONE. The really quick-paced
    2. 1:11- Perhaps the best part about this tricl for me was that A) it was a spicing it up type trick B) it was s p i c y a f and C) the spice up used another trick as the spice up. I recognized both the original trick and the spice up, and the fusion of those two makes the trick absolutely genius. Maybe fusions will be a theme for a future SIUTS episode.
    1. 1:05- Everything moving in the background combined with the main purpose of it (the metal cups) is SO GOOOD. The metal cups specifically blew me away. The nicely timed movement of it all just makes for a great trick.
    Just some final thoughts about the machine as a whole. I love the sequence in the beginning with the pool balls and the cards revealing all of the signs. That gives me an idea (that I might use for some special occasion). I also thought it was nice how you made the path of the machine pretty easy to follow. Just one table after the other. Granted, a complex path makes the machine more interesting, but for a purpose like this, it makes more sense to involve a simple path. The behind the scenes video was also really entertaining to watch. I will probably make one for the Vat19 Machine. I also noticed the timing of the music throughout the machine, such as when 2:25 when the drop in the song occurs and multiple times throughout when it switches tone. I don't know it that was intentional or not but it really characterizes what is going on in the machine. As things start to move more, more instruments may join in, or when a really cool or chaotic motion occurs the drop in the song.
    Also, was this set off live for anyone?
    Anyway, such a great job man. Can't wait to see what you will do next.

    • @jackofallspades98
      @jackofallspades98  6 років тому +1

      First of all, thank you for such a detailed comment. Not to put so much pressure on you, but I always look forward to reading your thoughts on my videos. You have a way of pointing out things about my machines that even I didn't notice before. For example, you immediately noticed that the can tilt trick is basically a SIU idea, and I hadn't even noticed until you pointed it out. And you're totally right. It takes a classic machine trick and adds a fresh new twist to it. And that fusion idea gives me a great idea for a potential video...I'll message you privately... ;)
      The balance between clean and complex was definitely one I had to keep in mind throughout the building process. There were a few occasions where I caught myself wanting to attempt an idea that I knew would be too complex. (I added those ideas to my idea document; they're not going to waste, don't worry!) What resulted was a slightly simpler machine than my signature compact & complex style, but that doesn't mean that I'm not proud of each and every one of the tricks in this machine. As someone else pointed out, there's something in this machine for everyone, from the casual watcher to the experienced machine builder.
      Interesting point about the metal cups: those were actually one of the very last things to be added to the table, and even the machine as a whole. For the longest time, all I had was the yellow ball roll off the end of the Hot Wheels track, and I didn't even have the board section after the dump truck. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to fill that first table. I knew I eventually had to get the yellow ball into that clear tube (the one that the yellow marble rolls down first) but I needed to fill the right side of that table, and doing something else with that yellow ball first was the only way I could think of to do that. I added the first cup (the one with the short orange track on top) first, with no actual idea of how I was going to lift the ball back up so it could roll down that track. I even experimented with another lifting method using the K'nex chain (shown in the BTS), but it didn't work out. I'm not exactly sure how I thought of just having another cup that lifts up. Regardless, I love how it turned out. Not just the timing aspect of it, but just the general aesthetic of the two identical moving metal cups.
      That trick inspired by the card-revealing billiard ball chain sounds like it has the potential to be really neat. Is the special occasion CDM by any chance??? If not, could it be???
      It would be great if you made a BTS for the Vat19 machine! Have you been recording tests and stuff throughout the process and stuff? That's really what makes a BTS video in this style watchable.
      The only music synchronizations in this video were the ones at 0:10 (which I do for literally every video), 0:26, 0:41, and 4:48. The other ones you mentioned, particularly the one at 2:25, were all unintentional. The original song I used for this video is slightly shorter than this video, so I had to stretch the length to fit the video. To do this, I used the Remix feature in Adobe Audition that allows you to take any song and specify a new length for it and it will try to find mesh points to extend the song by looping parts of it naturally. That's why the drops in the song in this video are so much shorter than the drops in the actual song. Using this tool is challenging because I can't specify a length for the song in Audition until I know how long the video is, but I don't know how long the video is until I synchronize it to the song properly. So I just edited together the parts that couldn't be adjusted in length (the machine, the talking part after, the outro) with the rest of the video that could be adjusted in length (the intro, the drone shot, the slideshow, and the sped-up footage of the curtain) to get a general idea of the length of the video. I told Audition to extend the song to slightly longer than that amount (the product is usually shorter than your specified length since it has to find the perfect transition points in the song), imported that into Premiere, and adjusted the parts that could change in length to fit points in the song based on the extended version. Wow, that was a long answer.
      Yes, after I already got the full one-take version of the machine (what you see in this video), I had live demonstrations of the machine. There were a lot of people who came to see it, including several science professors, other students in science-related classes, people who worked in the Kern Center, creative producers who filmed/took photos (that's how I got some of those nice photos/videos that I used in the slideshow in this video and throughout the BTS), and even the President of the college. They all seemed to love it, although I never had a perfect test for an audience. :D
      Again, thanks for such a long comment, I always appreciate it when people take the time to give their detailed thoughts about my work. It's such a huge part of why I love what I do.

      jackofallspades98 No problem man! Lemme just write a reply to your reply...
      About the fusion trick: yeah I knew we would find a better idea 😂
      Yeah, that special occasion is CDM.
      In the BTS for the Vat19 Machine, I planned in describing how some of the tricks work and what products I could have used. I wasn’t planning on talking about past designs but maybe that’s something I should start documenting.
      About the music: really? That’s a huge coincidence. And I’ll definitely have to use that feature in audition at some point.

    2 incredible uploads from 2 incredible builders less than 24 hours apart of each other. (You and Konrad) Wow o.O
    This is seriously incredible! There wasn’t a single moment I wasn’t impressed by. I have a lot of questions too. How did you reset the water part? How long did it take to perfect that ball launch???? But seriously, though, what an incredible video. You’re a true master of machines.

      I talk about resetting the water section in the Behind the Scenes video! The launch was extremely easy to figure out, since those launchers are so amazingly accurate. I only had to make minor adjustments to the placement of the last table so that it would make it into the funnel properly.

      Destructotz Domino Haha yeah. Although four tables is a lot easier to manage with this style of building. This machine would've taken like a year if I made it in the same level of complexity/compactness as Bet-Losing Machine!

    Just one question, In your JustOfferAnySuggestion announcment video you said the first episode of this series will be your next video. What happened to it ?

    • @jackofallspades98
      @jackofallspades98  6 років тому

      It's still coming, for sure! Like I mentioned at the end of the BTS, this machine came out of nowhere for me a little bit. I had no idea I would be doing this project until well after I released that announcement video for JOAS. If I don't have any other projects come out of nowhere and surprise me, the debut episode of JOAS should be my next video. I'm super excited about it and I think it will be a great video, I just have to finish making it first!

      Apollo14 I was referring to my signature compact & complex style of building when I said that. This machine is more spread out and less complicated. For right now, I'm sticking to single-table machines when I build with that style.

    • @apollo1493
      @apollo1493 6 років тому +1

      That was really just a joke, and I don't think this machine is any less impressive than the BLM. My favorite section was probably the Water section, because even the tricks that didn't involve water were mainly the smoothest moving tricks in the machine. My favorite for that section was probably the swinging track at 1:36, it felt like a somehow more complicated version of Is It Possible #16. Btw, how the heck did you reset the water bottle trick at 1:29? (Haven't watched the BTS video yet, so it might be explained there, idk :P)

    Hey man, I've been a fan of yours for a while now and I really love your stuff. I've been following the Rube Goldberg community probably since I started UA-cam. But I just posted my first big machine in a long time, so maybe you can check it out and tell me what you think? Sorry I hate to self advertise but I honesty want to know what a skilled machine builder like yourself would think of it. Thanks! Keep up the awesome work.

    No machine as a screenlink?

    • @jackofallspades98
      @jackofallspades98  6 років тому

      I didn't have the time for it, since building the machine took longer than I expected, but then I got the machine to work really late as well, and I still had to make time for the live demonstrations of the machine over the course of two days. Any extra time after that was devoted to the BTS video. Especially with a machine of this length, filming the Machine as a Screenlink segment would've taken at least a day, which I didn't have the time for. Besides, I think everything is pretty easy to understand from the single camera view, but if not, the BTS also has some overhead shots in it and stuff. It was a sacrifice I was comfortable making.
