As for myself, in real life I come off as a little weird; as a manager I'm a creep. In real life, I have a deep laugh; as a manager I use it loudly and often. In real life, my speech tends to be slow, as a manager ... I ... re-lish ... ev-er-y ... syl-la-ble ... and ... word. So, anti-social and dark humour? Well, then, someone who hates the fans--loathes them one and all!--and finds their sorrows amusing would be perfect for a heel.
+Kortodov Umm you pretty much described Raven. Only difference was that Raven was a REALLY good actor (as was Vickie Guererro). In character he was a ball of misery but backstage he has been heralded as one of the biggest jokesters ever. It's oddly the same with Vickie Guererro, one of the biggest heat draws in the last decade but backstage she was almost like a mother figure to everyone or at least thats what she said when she was on Jericho's podcast.
Kortodov that's why you twist it into your own thing take that antisocial dark nature and turn yourself into the next Raven/Sting/Bray Wyatt/ or undertaker of course don't copy and paste but look at what they did with it turn that loneliness(no offense) into a crazy almost cultist like personality making a character isn't too hard just take some time

wuspoppin a new finisher can engergize a crowd but a classic finisher can pay homage or can cause the crowd to compare so depends on what you want

I think the most important thing about establishing a gimmick is to not be afraid to borrow freely from other established guys and combine gimmicks. For example I spent a very short time as a manager and I was a cross between The Rock (the 2003 Hollywood gimmick) and Raven. My opening line was "are you happy because I'm miserable?" It's something that Raven would say but my delivery was like The Rock's. And I was always talking up to the guy I was managing like Bill Alfonso did as well.
Most thought it would never work, but I drew about as much heat as Vickie Guererro. I mean as soon as I picked up the mic I got heat. And I reveled in it, which made the fans boo even more. I'd get dirty looks from fans cuz they were so bought in. Its also really good to know how to engage an audience well. Its far better as a bad guy to troll the audience than to just belligerently tell them to shut up. There was a guy where I was working who was a bad guy and he was getting dead reactions because he was really belligerent all the time and it was so predictable that I was copying his promos live backstage (which cracked people up). So I told him to act like he was gonna be belligerent but then just kind of shake his head at the fan who he wanted to be belligerent too.
Learning the psychology of performing, speaking, and audience interaction is A MUST if you want to pursue a performance role in wrestling. I mean I just ramble and talk out of my ass on my channel, but don't let that fool you lol

+Jaiden Docwra thing is, everyone has good and bad in them. There are very few pure good (faces) & pure evil (heels) in the world.
That's why I wish there were more tweeners in wrestling. People like Kevin Owens & Dead Ambrose I see as tweeners, and going into the past Roddy Piper & Stone Cold

By the way, whether Matt Borne, who I first saw in WCCW tag teaming with Jeff Jarrett, chose to be Doink or not is not the issue, the message that was being used "don't judge a book by it's cover" was custom made for "Maniac" Matt Borne because he was probably the best technical wrestler who was not a "Superstar". Yes, we all knew who Doink was when he debuted. I saw him evolve from Maniac Matt Borne to Big Josh to Doink and I think the Doink character allowed him not only to be himself albeit behind the makeup but to grow as a superstar.
I'm surprised to see you didn't recommend people try out their characters (or a variety of characters) in video games that feature "Create A Wrestler" modes. It gives them a good idea of how the character will project to an audience before they move on to bringing the character to life.

I've always liked the badass super heels that had some small semblance of a code of honor. They were mean and ruthless in the ring but they never had to cheat or fight too dirty. AND THEY DON'T RUN AWAY WHEN THINGS GET TOUGH!

Love these videos. If I had a gimmick, it would be based on using pop culture to taunt others, but also using obscure references that are understood by most, but would probably go over my opponent's head.

I love the character episode it's been one I been struggling with, but I am also am curious how to choose the right finisher for your gimmick or at least help define you better, I know names help. Where would Stone cold be without his classic middle finger, kick to the gut and stunner? or the rock with the rock bottom? Lesnar and the F5? Catching my drift?
Can you do a video on workout and diet regiment to get into the pro wrestler shape?

Thanks Mr. Zane your videos are awesome, but speaking on the subject of finding your character I was wondering if you could do a top 8 video of the most offense characters or gimmicks of all time. Obvious entries could include Eugene, Godfather, The Mexicools, Cryme Tyme, and many others. As degrading as some of these are, it also makes fans realize how much humiliation some wrestlers have to go through to try to make it in such an obvious cut throat biz. My research into the gear of technical wrestlers is that they go basic. Tights or trunks, wrist tape, and simple boots. Clean and classy.

I'm just starting out (I've been training since March 2015), still a bit out of shape but working on that. I've been learning at a school ran by The Hunter Brothers/Attack PRO!/Fight Club Pro wrestling for the past 6 months and a different school before that.
This video is rather helpful as I am looking to start working on my character; I do have an idea of a video gamer character (since I work in the games industry and have that as a hobby), with potential for face and heel roles, but it's more coming up with a name to match, as well as ring gear for my body shape. Any recommendations for ring gear? Singlets, perhaps?
+Craig Whitehouse If you're uncomfortable showing an exposed upper body, a singlet could work, or long tights with a singlet top (either with straps or full-chest-and-back covering). And if you're playing it up for heel heat, you can always wrestle shirtless! :)

I really don't know how to word this but when adopting finishers which is a better choice using something that fits the character you've adopted or something that you use way before said character and also is it frowned upon in the business using a well known finisher like say the pedigree as your own or then is it just better to create one
If I were a Wrestler i'd be THE STEALER... A character that tries to put each Wrestlers finishing move on him from the beginning of the match.. Could work... I'd have a mask, obviously... And a big question mark on my chest... Get people to chant 'Why ?' like they did with Austin's 'What ?'
Probably a good way for a heel to sign an autograph but somewhat keep kayfabe would be overestimating how valuable said autograph is worth ("Hold on to that kid, one day it'll be worth at least six figures!"). If I were to pick a character, it'd be a super bad ass tweener. He's a loner who doesn't play by any body's rules. Yet he gets massive face pops and sells lots of merch. That's never been done, right?
Isn't the character pretty much stone colds gimmick?
I'm training with Nick Dinsmore and I've been a boxer for years. I play a face, so I want to do a Dempsey Roll as my finisher. If you don't know, it's weaving the head and upper body in a figure 8 while you throw hooks and uppercuts. It can be a rhythmic thing, throwing a hook from whatever side you dodge from, but it can also switch it up fairly easily by changing the stance. I think it can work in wrestling and I've been trying it out. Do you think that could be successful?
Eugene says he's indifferent now, and it's up to me to make it look good. Maybe I could do the Dempsey roll into a superman punch? I'm 5'8" and 165lbs so I think I need a finisher that looks like death.

Ideally, make a character who could theoretically work as a heel.
If your character is egotistical, as a face you can have a goal to make the audience love him, always putting on the best matches. As a heel, he can cheat to win the belt, forsaking the audience because all that matters is how important the status of the belt is. Making a character that doesn't just completely change when his alignment does is a great thing.
Also: Just because your a face doesn't mean you have to be hogan levels of saintly, and just because your a heel doesn't mean you need to be MJF levels of evil. Being a face means you are the person people should cheer. You can be a flawed person while being loved. A heel just needs to be booed. It doesn't mean they can't be somewhat sympathetic or interesting.
If people are going to use the 3.5e DnD alignment system as a reference, I would recommend doing research into the intricacies of the alignments and looking for examples. Paladins are what everyone thinks of as Lawful Good, and in wrestling, this would be the realms of your Cena's, 1980's Hogan's, and Roman Reigns'. Keep in mind is that there is a huge difference between Lawful Good and Lawful Stupid or Lawful Asshole. You don't want to fall into the later categories, or else you'll get Eva Marie heat.

Then how do you explain Ric Flair? He based his entire gimmick almost entirely off "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, the first WWE champion.
+dstebbin There are exceptions to every rule, of course. Flair and Rogers also worked very different eras, so it's not like the two of them wrestled as the Nature Boy at the same time. Lots of Hardy Boy knockoffs walk the earth and those two guys are still working.
Hey Brian new to the biz and have a question if you have a sec. so my character is a mix between Kane,Abyss, and Foley (I know super original) haha well I add my own stuff in to make it my own like most wrestlers do. I also make sure to stay away from any of there moves to help separate my gimmick. well long story short my promoter has been wanting me to use the choke slam as a finish because he thinks it will get a good pop. Since I'm so tall 6' 8" and look like Kane. I have avoided doing anything that will make you think of those wrestlers to this point but should I just give in and do the chokeslam? It kinda goes along with your other vid. Getting Booked. and just do what the promoter wants to make sure I get booked? or continue what I'm doing for my character to help separate me from those legends? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.
+Branden Carr You are your biggest advocate, and if a promoter asks you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can respectfully tell him why you object. Hopefully you two can come to a good compromise.

hey Brian. I really wanna get into the business but I haven't started to train yet. I have a job. 2 things, If I wanna get into the biz how should I balance my budget for wrestling school. And I'm a 130 lbs. I work out but not often so should I start working out more before or when I train. and im 20 is that a good age to start. I do know some things. like how to take bumps and how to sell and how to do punch and kick while stomping cuz my friend who's in the biz taught me the basics.

At least I have multiple character ideas... but how would they fit in a manager role?
Before I broke into the business back in 2002, I had an idea of six different gimmicks, one of them was called Darkshadow, which would mostly be a Sting ripoff, which I'd be wearing black and white, with black and white facepaint, with long black hair, and my theme music would be Coma by Guns N Roses, I never told anybody in the business about this gimmick, but Mitch Ryder had this idea of a gimmick for me, where I'd wear hospital scrubs, a Hannibal mask, and these pair of steel-toe boots that I was wearing at the time, and the back story of my character is that I work at an asylum, and I go crazy by putting up with the inmates, (I love that gimmick, it's an awesome idea) so if I ever try to get back into the business and try to be a wrestler, I'm going to go with that gimmick, the job I work at, I might as well call it an asylum, So I think that would make my back story more convincing, Mitch also said he had a certain music for my character, but he never told me what it was, but I have a few music ideas, I plan to use Coma by Guns N Roses (I feel it's a perfect fit for that gimmick) but I'd only use that song at a venue that would turn their lights out, the lights would turn out as the song begins, right at the 26 second mark, a crew member would shine a big flashlight behind me as the fans would just see a shadow of me, at the 34 second mark, the venue lights turn on, and I do my gimmick where I spit a red mist in the air (like Triple H with his water mist) other musics with no light effects would be Poison by Alice Cooper, Keep Away by Godsmack, Clowns and All The Things She Said (sometimes Victoria's version) by TATU, and Shocker theme to Wes Craven's Shocker each of those themes, I'll still be spitting the red mist when I come out of the curtain and do a slow walk to the ring (fast walk if I enter with Clowns) and when I see a fan reaching out for a five, I'll give them a light five, another idea I have to the Hannibal mask, if my opponents pull off my mask, I start biting them, I won't take the mask off myself because I believe it's actually my face. my moves would be Shock-Pad Submission (I rub my fist together like doctors do with shock pads, squeeze the opponent with one fist of their rib-cage, the other in their upper back when they're standing, or I press both fists into their chest when they're flat of their back) Here's Johnny (my opponent would be in the corner, I set a croquet in between their legs and hit the ball with a croquet mallet "a shoutout to both versions of The Shining, The famous quote in Kubrick's version as the move name, and the croquet mallet being Jack's weapon in King's version") Blood Mist (a/k/a red mist) Redrum-Murder (A flip DDT, which would look like a Northern Lights Suplex except I'm doing the damage, and the name isn't only a shoutout to The Shining, but it's also because the damage is in reverse, just like Redrum is Murder in reverse) and The Totem Driver (I get on my opponent's shoulders causing them to fall forward into a inverted pedigree).
Sometimes there's even aspects that don't NEED to be taken up to eleven--I have a naturally deep voice, and EVERYONE finds my real laugh really, really creepy. Works well in the role of Gentleman John Lynx.

How do you change your character at right moments? I think a great example is with Jericho returning and at first being a face but not getting as huge a pop as he used to, so 2008 heel jericho comes in, and people loathe him, how do you time it right?
+Blazin Rko tman I think your character evolutions come in time. But lots of times, face and heel turns are dictated by the bookers, and not by the wrestlers themselves.

I want my character to be a badass heel or maybe a twener, who doesn't care about nothing and no one and just kicks everybodys ass. I have also practicing promos and i thing they a prety good but i don't know if people gona buy in to it. I mean it basicly something like Kevin Steen or Stone Cold Steve Austin. I feel like a lot of people have used it before but i don't know.
Question if you want to be a face what should you not do in the ring, same with the heel what should you not do in the ring.
+Ryan Burgess (Knight of Loyalty) I won't go into the details here, but if you want to learn about effective faces and heels, you should watch 80's wrestling because that's when it was at it's most clear-cut. You'll also learn about that if you go into wrestling training!

Well yes of course, there are exceptions to the rule and shades of gray and all that. Flair was one of the rare guys in the 80s who could straddle that line. Again, I advise you just study tape of the wrestlers you want to emulate and see how they work the crowd!

I haven't trained in a while, but when I did, I learned under Buddy Rose and Col. DeBeers in Portland back when I was in college.

Around 1989-1990 Flair was in town. I saw him at the gas station, asked for his autograph, he smiled an said, "i dont have time for that shit kid" an messed up my hair. I cried. But looking back, he gave me more than an autograph,. He gave me a story and lesson.
Which is better "i got his autogrpah" or "the dude was so kayfabe he smiled, but then shot me down" This was back when it was "real"

+jason newstead In my opinion, Lethal as Macho Man was fine because 1) Lethal was already established as himself before taking on the Macho Man character, 2) it was probably something that started out as a rib between the boys that got over and took off as a tribute gimmick, and 3) Savage himself allegedly gave Lethal his blessing to do it!
TRAVELING! I don't mean like traveling to go to training, but I know lot of wrestlers have wrestled around the globe before getting into bigger promotions like WWE, like Mexico, or Japan or Germany or anywhere else but how would a growing professional wrestler go about it?
+Blazin Rko tman Usually, you can work for smaller wrestling feds around the world as long as your documents are good and you get there on your own dime. Now, for tours with actual paying promotions, a lot of it is networking, and/or a killer highlight reel or resume.
I actually have a good chance of making it into the wrestling business. My dad's best friend is a referee for independent promotions in Louisville, Ky where OVW is. My question is, is it good to have connections to independent wrestling shows?

I never would have made the Jim Cornette comparison, but now that you mention it could see why some would make that assumption unfortunately.
How does choosing your finisher factor into the equation?
+SgtKeck I don't think it does all that much, really, as most finishers are just variations of one of 5-6 basic moves. The finisher should at least match up with your wrestling style ... for example, if you're a high-flyer, don't use a submission as your finisher. Other than that I think the choice is yours.
+Wrestling With Wregret Let me rephrase the question, lets say you have a guy like Brock Lesner. why does the F-5 fit better then the multiple powerbombs he came in with, or say Ron Simmons spinbuster work better than the Dominator? Is it just that the moves demonstrate the physical strength they're trying to get across or does an element of the wrestlers character factor into it?
+SgtKeck I don't think those choices were made because they were a better fit for their characters, they were probably made for aesthetic purposes, or perhaps because one move is easier to do on a regular basis than another. In those two examples you listed, both are set-up just like a powerbomb, which takes more work on the part of the opponent to get into the proper position to take the bump than, say, a fireman's carry into a face bump, or a high flat back bump.
Out of those, Cena is definitely the best choice. I can't really think of anyone else either.
I would be something like a crazy physcopath locked in a asylum for many years who is heavily agressive. The Character is a tweener.
He does promos in dark light backstage. He uses mind games to confuse opponents. Do you think it is a great gimmick
Best video of the collection!!! I am a use yourself exaggerated. The biggest mistake I see is someone trying to be something they are not. How can you be a lucha and not know ANYTHING about lucha or a undertaker type dark character who doesn't know what being dark means. Be you and turn it all the way up.

My wrestling influence is Eddie Guerrero's father, Gory Guerrero. How could I emulate Gory's wrestling style?
I waned to get your thought on a character what about just a nerdy guy who loves Anime and other nerdy stuff. But is also antisocial like a cross between Raven, and Eugene(Eugene by interest not "special" gimmick). Who went by Otaku which is the term anime fans use to describe themsleves, what's your opinion Zane?
+Xtravmon I welcome the idea of a fun "nerdy" gimmick, not enough good ones in wrestling!

If you have a speech impairment (such as myself), can you still have a gimmick? Pretty much most wrestlers do need to talk. (Even silent characters like The Undertaker do talk once in a while)
+Scott Vickery That all depends on your character, I suppose. You might be able to find some kind of gimmick that allows you to stay mostly silent and not have to cut promos. Depending on the severity of your speech impediment, you could make it part of your gimmick I suppose (think Matt Morgan or Bubba Ray Dudley and their short-lived "stuttering" gimmicks). Or you could do what Cody Rhodes and Jack Swagger did and coach yourself not to have the impediment anymore! :)

I have a pretty unique character, the problem for me is finding a company that would use it well on a storyline instead of throwing me aside for fear of making people angry with the storyline.
What is your character's storyline that might make people angry?
Daniel Blair verbal and physical abuse, which I would accept if it works for the storyline, the reason why it could work is the same reason why it could anger people, I'm transgender so it is not much far from the real life, I could accept a storyline based on the myth that transgender girls are stronger than common girls but the problem is that I would probably have to be a heel for it to work, this could anger some people who would think the company is making me have that heelish character because they actually hate me and it is not simply a storyline.
Daniel Blair not being sure if it is real or not is good when you are a face, but when you are heel, it will make bad controversy, I prefer the storyline related to abuse because it is a more extreme version of the Daniel Bryan storyline in 2013-2014, but it would need the right booking and moments for it to work.
Daniel Blair from that story I could build myself to any angle basically, and just become another person in the roster, a different one but another one nonetheless.
Daniel Blair it may sound confusing when I tell how I think it should go, because I can't really show to people how it would be.
This is very interesting to me. For years I'v had a dream of bringing my character to live. I'm concerned it might be too late for me though. I'm 35 now.
My question though, comes from this one and another video you made on religious gimmicks. You made fun of there being a tone of Raven/Undertaker hybrid guys out in the indies. Those two guys are my top influences when it came to persona. Can you (or anyone else reading this) tell me if my guy is unique enough? I do have two other characters that I could easily shift to though.
Vengeance. A man who sees himself as the hand of justice. He will go to any length to see a wrong righted and see the wicked be punished. One can even call upon him to serve as their vehicle of retribution. He wrestles to maintain a balance. Sure, championships matter to him, but a higher calling is slaying the wicked.
As far as gear, I have designed this guy to look all sorts of ways, so that's pretty flexible. Anyway, like I said I'm 35 and fat so I worry for my chances. I know I won't see the big leagues if I start now, but that's ok. I can always pray for ROH or NJPW eh?
That sounds pretty badass, just try that gimmick and see if it sticks, if you don't really like the gimmick, then try something different until it sticks. That gimmick sounds pretty cool and I hope that it'll work. Maybe work out a bit

There is no such thing as too old. In fact there was a wrestler who literally started at 35 and got into the wwe at like 38. So with that said, it all comes down to you. Doesn’t matter about age,style, it comes down to YOU.
what if my promos are too edgy like holocaust jokes, racist jokes, vulgar humor, humiliating the crowd, making fun of elderly and mentally disabled,
is it still possible to get a good push or get into big indie promotions like czw,pwg,omega maybe even ohio valley or roh maybe even major promotions like impact or wwe or njpw
What about being an antihero character? What would i have to put into that?
+chase gray My advice would be to look at films and TV shows featuring antiheroes and draw inspiration from them. It all goes back to finding out what makes your own character tick.
+Wrestling With Wregret well the main ones that inspire me is eric draven from the crow,the punisher,mad max,deathstroke,deadpool,etc etc. Also the other thing being the outfit i would use now my character would just wear all black but i don't know what to add to my thing besides the boots and a black trench coat and i know what you said about street clothes but is there anyway i could make that work or if not then what kind of gear could i wear for an anti hero look?

Eh, the trenchcoat thing is iffy, you can wear it to the ring as it would make a good accent, but then again, people will likely make comparisons to guys like Sting and Edge. But if you're going for that kind of gimmick, I suggest darker, more muted colors,
maybe stay away from flashy designs (less can be more in wrestling), that sort of thing. Really, the look matters, but the vibe you give off with your personality matters more IMO.
I'm Polish, so is it going to be good, when I'll be something like Rusev, but obviously Polish?
+Siwy Dpends. Can you convincingly play a character like Rusev? Do you have the build, do you feel comfortable wrestling in that style? If yes, go ahead. In the end, your audience will tell you if your gimmick is working.
Can there be a face who cheats to win but isn't like Eddie Guerrero? I imagine myself with a gimmick like a rebellious person, sort of like Corey Graves' entrance music personified but uses stuff like brass knuckles to make his submissions look powerful.

Wrestling With Wregret Not every match, but I'd use it to defeat the people like Roman Reigns and John Cena, not Heath Slater and stuff. My submissions would knock them out anyway.

Learning the fundamentals and getting experience in front of crowds is probably your best bet!
You know I just watched the famous Dusty Rhodes “hard times” promo and it brought tears to my eyes. He was one of the greatest talkers ever I just love his promo style. Pillman is another favorite of mine, I like a sadistic character and would like to portray that style. I’ll try that someday.
Ok I need to know where you and other people stand because my friends think I'm crazy but the fact that Kevin Owens as a Canadian is not part of the league of nations that the long term plan for him is to become the next Austin a loner now given his past matches I am sure it's a stretch but their is a reason he is not in the league instead Alberto is when he already has another gimmick going on with zeb tell me what you think?

From what I know about the legal aspects of wrestling, I'd think another bit of advice would be to not wrestle under your real name, seeing as in many cases, the promotion will own the rights to your character as opposed to you (or is that just with the biggest promotions?), so trying to leave a promotion when they own the legal rights to your real name could be a bit of a legal kerfuffle.

I am 2awesome4u I certainly wouldn't try to use the last name of a famous wrestler! No problem using a combination of real name / fake name though.

Zane, just hear me out here. I think you should shave your head and wear a pimp hat while also keeping you suits and spray bottle. Its outlandish but its different and also people would stop calling you a Cornette rip off. Also if you sprayed the guy while holding the spray bottle sideways like a thug would a gun that would be amazing.
