  • Oprah talks to trauma therapist, minister, and author Dr. Anita Phillips about her New York Times bestselling new book, The Garden Within: Where the War with Your Emotions Ends and Your Most Powerful Life Begins. Dr. Anita explains how embracing our emotions rather than suppressing them is the key to living our most powerful life. Blending faith, the latest discoveries in neurobiology, and her own research, Dr. Anita shows us how to reach a state of emotional well-being. She describes this as our internal garden, our heart, that needs cultivating and that starts by letting ourselves be present in our feelings before rushing to understand or resolve.

I'm grateful for her and the work she is doing. Be encougaged. Oh, do will with your studies.

I have a mother wound, as the oldest, labeled as ungrateful, selfish, etc as I tried to “be good” while mother navigated her two abusive marriages. Not nurtured it’s taking time and through therapy am finding nurturing self and healing. I Am NOT crazy as labeled by family. I believe God has another report. I am His workmanship. I find that feeling feelings until they release brings me joy. In the past I suffered from depression and found mantra meditation helped me. I would write down my negative thoughts and come up with a positive mantra that was the opposite of my negative thoughts. I would focus my mind on my breath and repeating my positive mantra and any time my mind wandered bring my focus back to my breath and my mantra. I did this 45 minutes a day 5 days a week for a year in a half changing my mantra weekly. After a few weeks of doing this I was feeling much happier and calmer and after a year and a half I had a lot more positive thoughts about myself.

Great interview and greatly needed. I love how Dr. Phillips talked about being vulnerable. We are so apt to push those feelings back. I think this is why so many people are hurting because they have stored up pain that needs to be released. I remember when my mom died, I would do my normal stuff, grocery shopping, and tears would be flowing. It made so many people uncomfortable. They would say oh my can we help, are you okay? I would say no, I'm not okay, but I will be. I just needed to not stuff it, or stay at home because I might cry. It is so freeing when you can cry when you need to because, for me, it hurts my body when I need to cry and I don't. Thank you, Oprah, for having Dr. Phillips on your Podcast.

Yesterday I was blessed to celebrate my birthday. When I opened my YT account today, this is the first video that I saw. This is the absolute best gift. Dr. Phillips is so awesome, so gifted, so anointed for such a time as this! I am most definitely going to purchase her book. Thank you Oprah for blessing us this way. I'm appreciative.

      @tayamikakachete5291 "Faded Flower"
      By Steven F Gooden-Cohen
      I lay you down
      Gently
      I Hold you
      Not so tight
      I speak to you softly
      Before Your Bloom
      Has Turned to Night
The Color in Your Hair's Gone Grey
AndvLifes Sweet Scent Has Flown Away
      But The Memory of
      You in Your Glory
      Is What With Me
      Will Always Stay
      Faded Flower
      Even When Your Bloom
      Has Turned To
      Grey
Youre Still my Favorite Faded Flower
      Though Your Sweet Scent
      Has Blown Away
      I knew That This Day
      Would Come
      I Knew Your
      Sun would Set
But We Are Never Really Ready
It Seems To Sudden Comes That Rest
      Thank You
      For All The Spring
Times When i held Your Bloom In My Careess
      For All The Joy
      And Warm Embrace
You Gave Us All Your Very Best
      Faded Flower
      You Once Bloomed
      In The Sun & Played
      MY Beautiful Favorite Flower
      Your Sweet Scent
      With Me Will Stay
      Faded Flower
      Soon Again
      Your Night
      Will Turn
      To Day
For You My Favorite Flower In My Memory
      Your Bloom
      Will Never
      Fade Away
      My Sweet Faded Flower
      I'll always See
      You Bloomed
      In Every Memory
      Following
      Morning, Night, And
      Noon.
      You'll Bloom Again
      I Promise
      You'll Bloom Again
      Soon.
      You'll Bloom Again
      Faded Flower
      Where the Sun
      Will Never Set
      Faded Favorite Flower
      I'll see You Too
      When My Spring
      Has Passed.

I love this episodes. It validates what I've always felt and thought about being human, and how we should be human to human. What I'm still bothered by though are the cultural constraints that people encounter when they express emotions such as anger, hurt, or sadness. They are often labelled as negative and shunned. That I believe has led to many people withholding their emotions and inflicting self-harm.
