THING TO NOTE: That stretch that he does in the beginning only applies if you're already warmed up and/or actually play often. If you do that cold or inexperienced, you could tear something. I would do that stretch and "shake it out" between warmups. Remember, he was a marching drummer and a lot of his warmups come from drumline warmups where they would literally play for HOURS a day and HARD. Beginners and average joes should be careful of that first stretch he shows you!
Thank you UA-cam for adding reduced and increased speed options for videos. The reducing speed to .5 is particularly helpful for me in seeing/hearing exactly what he's doing starting around 3:19. As far Travis, the stretches at the beginning and warm ups themselves seem to all be very decent.
Anyone who says he's a bad drummer and that you're better needs to get their heads exams. He's not overrated, honestly he deserves everything he accomplished great drummer. Makes every blink 182 song better anyone who hates on em does it because he's an easy target. I'm not even that big of a blink 182 fan I'm just stating the truth
Christian E More than anything, the reason behind criticism against him has to do with comparing him to other drummers. But, I totally agree that, when in comparison with the likes of Mike Mangini, Blake Richardson, Steve Gadd, Benny Grebb, Matt Garstka, etc., Travis is nothing.
+ThatCheapDrummer Well how do you know? Do you play? Do you know what aspects of his playing make him nothing compared to them? How do you determine that? Just because the other drummers play more complex things and are in different bands doesn't mean they are automatically on another level and Travis is nothing.
Christian E Yeah, I've been playing for a few years (and love it to death!). I never said he wasn't a solid drummer. He sure knows how to keep time and make a simple but effective groove that fits a song he plays. I was just saying purely from the technicality point of view, he isn't too crazy. Sorry man, didn't mean to make my last response sound so negative.
+ThatCheapDrummer garstka is insane and yea travis isn't a bad drummer but I hear people say shit like "he's the best drummer in the world" pretty much just he's the only drummer they even know which is annoying but yea he's solid ... he's no meg white lol
I use to critique Travis horribly. But I don't anymore. He's actually a pretty good drummer. He can be on the beat like no other drummer I've seen. I also think, through the years, he's gotten alot better with his rolls and stick tricks. Another thing I admire is the fact that he sticks to a basic drumset. Nothing fancy, like everyone else, including me. I've bought just about everything you can shake a stick at. Ha Ha
With regards to being on the beat I agree but I was lucky enough to see Foo Fighters with Queen and Taylor Hawkins also plays right on top of the beat it is fantastic whereas Roger Taylor plays slightly behind it and pushing it along. This is how Dave Grohl plays too.
he is good a rudiments and drumline stuff always has been...... in the last year or soo he is actually starting to get really good.... i also critique him in his years with blink 182 he was average at best on a kit
beatlemania54 hes far away from being the best drummer in the world (as a lot of probably pretty young guys say and i think its stupid to look for the best, because there are so many styles and genres and there are heros everywhere), but he knows his shit and he plays with fire. :)
Don't know enough about drumming to say he is the best; however out of millions of drummers in the world, Travis hustled to make a name for himself! That I admire!
I never knew how important stretching is until I felt a strain. Newbie here but willing to learn so thank you for this vid. Got m'self a practice drum pad from SLINT on Amazon and practicing more in this quarantine situation.
Can't believe all the criticism, this dude plays with some killer sound quality through the doubles singles exercise. To everyone saying he needs to work on technique: first off, he's a drum set player so ease up. Second off, post a video of yourself doing these exercises at high tempos with better sound quality instead of hiding behind a keyboard posting ignorant statements.
I think a lot of people critique technique either because they do not understand what he is playing or they judge him on his personality. I do not think a lot of people realise behind the bravado and stunts and stick twirling there is a very accomplished musician with all the right technique.
This is a great video, all drummers should do this exercise, even at a slow tempo to build technique. Speed comes with the practice and repetition of your playing and this is a great way of doing that. I'm glad he did this, too many drummers these days don't pay attention to technique.
I know some will now like Travis but as someone who spent many hours practicing on a pad just like this there is no doubting his technique and he also has great feet too if you listen to the first 22 seconds of Feeling This where he channels John Bonham and it sounds great.
Barker isn't a bad drummer by any means, he's very creative and his chops are fantastic but I can't stand when people call him the "Best ever!" He certainly isn't one of the best from the technical standpoint or even from a chop standpoint. He's more like a pounder with some great chops. (I can see that he's had some basic High School marching band training, leading to some moderate technique.) Again don't get me wrong, he is very good at what he does but he can't touch guys like Papa Joe Jones, Buddy RIch, Max Roach, Carter Beauford, Akira Jimbo and others who have completely mastered both chops and control.
He's a skilled drummer who way overrated . Those warm ups were basically his drum solo's . Iv'e heard better drummer at guitar center and on the streets . He's over hyped because he's stylish and is in a decent band . Popularity doesn't make someone a awesome drummer .
Robert Rodriguez If you're in a college Marching band , most of what he's teaching here is basic rudiments for the college drummer . He only plays Hip Hop and with intermediate skills and style , people regard this guy as one of the best drummers . Geez . Get educated
+Leandro Martins all I'm asking is why is everyone on this clowns' nuts? He play exercises any 9th grader would know. Realize how ridiculous some of you sound
Someone did a high school marching band. Add more velocity to the stick. You can use arm, just not a full arm extension. FF should be 15/3 for Accents and Taps. 8-8-16 is the very basic warm up. The quicker you get, the lower and easier it should be. So far I haven't seen much of a gradual change and difference between taps and accents from him.
By the way he handles his sticks, you can say that he had a Jazz Drummer for teacher. That's why a movie like "Whiplash" is shit, they concentrate everything on the effort and strength to go fast, whereas you can go faster with less efforts on drums when you have the right moves and positions.
Yeah, and i'm not even a drummer, but i worked with some, and they fucking hate that movie. It's a good movie, but the message of "competition" through the music, and what they show about drums is so wrong ..
When he played 8's, is he switching hands on the and of 4? It looked like he would only play 7 beats and then the opposite would take over on the and. And he ended the exercise on the same hand that he had played the last full bar with which was odd.
I came here in hopes of finding something to be critical about, I mostly played within the marching genre... Kind of a stickler for technique as it were. But the exercises he uses (stretches notwithstanding) are pretty solid. 8/10. Could comment on sound quality but meh, it's for a kit/set and not marching instrument.
I'm glad that Travis is up to par with your standards. I think I speak for everyone in the comments section when I say that we were anxiously waiting for the guy in marching band to weigh in on the correctness of Travis's technique.

Yeah mine are toast now
Ya know I should’ve listened to that comment when I read it before the video buffered
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Mine blew up
😂

yeah, I felt that
That akward "hey whats up" at the beginning gets me everytime XD
Loooool
he said lil quicker .. after that I couldn't see the sticks 😑
true

This is an opinion from a non-drummer. It's very obvious
not quite my tempo
Everyone here doesn't like jazz they only like punk so they wouldn't have seen the movie aye haha
+Jayson Brady musically inclined people will know
TheMaximmas He should of played at 188 beat all his warm ups
I use to critique Travis horribly. But I don't anymore. He's actually a pretty good drummer. He can be on the beat like no other drummer I've seen. gospelplayer2 - General RAWR the solid rudiments make the best drum players
Same here, but it was my "he's just a punk drummer" mentality. I was just being a hater.

2:00 sounds so relaxing actually
RIP Speakers
lol this cracked me up man
RIP eardrums
"A little quicker". -Speeds up by a factor of 700-.
Simply the best drummer in existence. Respect ✊
He is definately the most talented guy in Blink, if that means something...
That's like saying he's the sharpest spoon in the drawer 😂
Or the smartest kid in special ed
Dude is considered one of the top 5 best punk drummers of all time so yeah I'd say that means something.
8 on a hand was one of the first things i learned as a drummer and i still use it today
I concur
never a huge fan of blink 182 but i like Travis as a drummer. his singles to doubles sounded pretty good.
That stereo on the couch looks like a face with the crease in the middle of the couch being the mouth and the stereo being the eyes 0.0
Don't know enough about drumming to say he is the best; however out of millions of drummers in the world, Travis hustled to make a name for himself! That I admire!
only because he plays for an awful band. all he does is 4/4 lol.
True...but he does have presence on stage, which a lot of better drummers dont have.
I never knew how important stretching is until I felt a strain. Newbie here but willing to learn so thank you for this vid. Got m'self a practice drum pad from SLINT on Amazon and practicing more in this quarantine situation.

misfit u
The beginning hurt my ears.... I had head phones on....
2011LegoMan Holy crap you're still alive
huh... that is interesting. lol
Still going hard! 🔥
wow thanks for adding static and a bunch of loud noises, really makes a difference to the video

I completely agree technique is important but a lot of the drummers I listen to tend to have it.
can someone break down that last warm up for me. i watched it over too many times. lol
You probably found out a long time ago ahah but i believe it’s RRLL RLRL RRLLRR LRLRLR // LL RR LR LR LLRRLL RLRLRL
Travis has awesome chops. Forget the naysayers.
I know some will now like Travis but as someone who spent many hours practicing on a pad just like this there is no doubting his technique and he also has great feet too if you listen to the first 22 seconds of Feeling This where he channels John Bonham and it sounds great.
He has bad technique
Brings me back to when I was in drumline
As an avid pro drummer and lifter this stretch routine is a good one..for hard hitting guys..and very animated
Great Moeller technique and rudiments….good timing also…..
Travis is a friend of WFD and owns 2 Drumometers too! Which is cool!
Simply explanation but great !
I need more of this stuff PLS dude.
DUUDE THIS IS AWESOME,THANX TRAVIS BARKER
when your sticking is so good, you can't tell between doubles and singles.
Barker isn't a bad drummer by any means, he's very creative and his chops are fantastic but I can't stand when people call him the "Best ever!" He certainly isn't one of the best from the technical standpoint or even from a chop standpoint.

Tom Adams Ditto. In some cases some of my students that still go to High School could match him.
Haha Someone marked the comments as spam...Really?
Robert Rodriguez If you're in a college Marching band , most of what he's teaching here is basic rudiments for the college drummer . He only plays Hip Hop and with intermediate skills and style , people regard this guy as one of the best drummers . Geez . Get educated
Tom Adams ...and if you knew anything about College technique you would know that his technique is horrible. ;)
Metronomes everywhere should be scared!! WOW! Amazing skills.
+Damon Lindsey what skills..? he's warming up...
+somericanguy still, it's not THAT simple.
Leandro Martins if you've ever drummed for more than 3 lessons, you'd know those same exercises
somericanguy Don't act like you're superior. Everyone has their time to learn things
+Leandro Martins all I'm asking is why is everyone on this clowns' nuts? He play exercises any 9th grader would know. Realize how ridiculous some of you sound
great one
PROFESSIONAL!!!
I see you barker hittin that moeller technique, good stuff
That boombox is awesome
Wow travis top 🔝
He was, he said in an interview before, thats why he's really good with snare work in a lot of blink songs :)
love the last exercise, it's so much fun to do!
hi bb
Travis is so TechNical
=) Awesome Drummer
I noticed it too, sometimes he does all 8 and sometimes he does 7. I thought I was going crazy trying to count it
pad sounds so spot on for my taste
nice warmups

Kit drumming is from the wrist not the arm
Awesome speed bro....
you're always the best on my life haha
How are those sticks not on fire 🤩 😳 wow
legend
god damn i love this man to this day. step aside kard ass ian
Intro scared the shit out of me
What kind of practice pad and stand is that? I want it!
Insane
Travis 😍

3pac son yes it is i hate that movie and drum line . Check out the blues devils drum line from concord California thier beast
Antonio Giron vanguard and crown
De quanto é esse pad???? Não acho desse tamanho de jeito algum...
Damn that noise in the beginning.
nice BOOMBOX back there...
what kind of drum sticks is travis using?
rip headphone :"""v
did you March drum corps
Jaden McCallum of course he knows how to grid his triplets he marched snare in high school and auditions for Blue Devils
I don't know if he "auditioned" for the Blue Devils, but from what I saw here, he wouldn't make the snare line for Blue Devils "C". LOL
Pan Námrďák !!!!
When he played 8's, is he switching hands on the and of 4? It looked like he would only play 7 beats and then the opposite would take over on the and. And he ended the exercise on the same hand that he had played the last full bar with which was odd.
Nice bombox in back
Look me up,My name is Varo...Varo drums... out of Chicago
That's crazy
hi, dont you get annoyed by the difference of pitch in your sticks?
what pad is he using
Signature travis barker pad. By zildjian. Its pretty decent, check it out.
His sticks are two different pitches and its driving me crazy on the slow shit....
My God, his singles to doubles sounded really even. Cool warm up though but I'd also take the advice from the xymbalreborn guy below.
does anyone else notice that he's not doing 8-8-16? he's doing 7-7-15
He is using 12" pad but they are selling 6" pad. Where do I find the 12" pad?
lesuelong xymox you can customize your own
WOW!
That first stretch he does is so bad for your tendons in your elbows oh my god I really hope he doesn't do that
Dang he must've been in drumline...he sure knows a lot about rudiments and stuff
nice twitch, moeller as well
Noise
yeah exactly
his tacet hands make me want to cry
Did you ever think that is for a purpose... It is to show the definition between left and right stick.. pretty logical tbh for a tutorial..
Play triple rolls inverted and some flam drags
Travis goo
RIP headphones
do you know how to count to 8? he's doing 8-8-16

Benny greb alphabet at second exercise
I noticed that too lol
I gained more respect for him for doing drum line exercises, but have you ever heard of controlled stick heights?
Nice stretching
Good for Velocity Olimpiadas... But for the music... Mhhhhhh
robot chicken transitions
🤘
I doubt it was done on purpose. I would chalk it up to imbalanced and different weight sticks right from the factory. Happens to me all the time.
I don't really understand with 42 people who dislike this video...
Non drummers
