Chess Endgames- Checkmate with Two Bishops

- www.thechesswebsite.com The two bishop endgame shows the strength of both bishops working together. I have detailed what I think is the easiest and most straightforward way to approach this endgame and checkmate the black king.
Feel free to visit www.thechesswebsite.com to practice this endgame against the computer.
thankfully when i got into this endgame, my opponent resigned :
achintya this is much easier than checkmating with a knight and a bishop
Yes, but certainly harder than the 1 rook checkmate.
Anony Mouse Likes DAWs the one rook is much more simple. You just shuffle the king down the board and then go opposite him with your king then move the rook down again
Bloody hell!
Mine didn't and I never actually studied chess, I only knew I was winning and had
double bishop mate is equivalent to a snake constricting prey while the single rook check is like a machine gun spraying down a hallway
How does chess get harder with less pieces?
because there are more open squares on the board and thusly more possibilities for different moves & combinations
@@dannymuller7709 and there are less pieces that can check the king.
Because I'm usually the one with less pieces!!
Because the answers are more definitive. There is less “White is slightly better” or “Black has a small advantage”. The answers are clear cut. One wrong move loses half a point or even a full point. With certainty.

broo mating with 2 bishops is standard theory
Nobody can't relate
Start by learning some of the simplest but most important basic end games like king and queen vs king, king and rook vs king and two rooks vs king.
It's definitely not the most common, but if you are able to win a game with two bishops then it should help you to know how the bishops work together and should carry over into your middle game strategies and tactics.

LOL. I was thinking Lumberg every time I said "Go ahead and.." Glad it wasn't just me!!
Zafire063 so if you could just go ahead and checkmate the king with the two bishops that would be greeeeaaat. *sips mugachino*
I was gonna like but I didn't cause I saw that you had 3 1s or 111 likes may i make them 112 or just keep 111. Reply
Its all fun and games practicing this offline until you face this in real match
True. You can also practice this endgame on my website to make sure you have it mastered.

@@StagnantMizu yeah! I was thinking of trying that good idea
At 7:17, if black King goes H8 instead of F8, white King to F7 = checkmate.
That is stalemate
Robert Esparza On the contrary, my friend.
If Black is dumb enough to play Kh8, White can play Kf7#. It is a discovered attack from the dark bishop on e5 after the white king moves. The white king is closing off g8, and the white bishop is closing off h7.
www.dropbox.com/s/142l5rkbpce8uc6/2-bishop-alternate-checkmate.png?dl=0
Micah Nightwolf the king cannot move itself into check
After white plays Kf6, bishop is blocked so black can move Kh8. Then white Kg7 checkmate by discovered attack. I said Kf7 in original comment but g7 is what I meant.
Correct!
i'll work on that. I've just been experimenting with a few things as I get accustomed to youtube. As I get better with youtube the videos will be better. Thanks for checking them out and I'll try to bring the volume down.
Thank you so much for making it look so easy. Really appreciate that mate. Still, took me a while to copy it into solving an exercise as there's quite a bit to look out for, but I finally managed to grasp it.
Thank you sincerely again.
this opening is not a crappy opening but like any opening in chess takes dedication to learn the ins and outs. If you pin the knight the opening is the ruy lopez which i made a video on you can watch. You can also play Bc4 that will usually develop into Giuoco Piano which I also made a video on. I personally grew up playing the ruy lopez so I do pin the knight down but I don't usually take the knight as I prefer bishops early on. If you watch the videos and have questions let me know.
14 years later these are still the best chess tutorials on UA-cam. Clear, concise, and without all the awful attempts at comedy. Pure chess.
Take a drink every time he says "go ahead"
I'm gonna go ahead and say thanks for going ahead and showing us how to go ahead with this mating pattern. It's going to really help my chess get ahead.
The video still went ahead and helped me go ahead and learn 😂
I'm really struggling with this. The green shaded areas help, Thank you
This is a very good way to get consistent at checkmating with two bishops without messing up. I tried to learn the faster way first where you don't move your bishops as much after centralizing them, the king is used more, and later on you split your bishops up to push the enemy king into the corner. It is quicker if you do all the right moves but it's easy to mess up I feel.
With the method in this video you will just have to memorize the king bishop shuffle pattern. It is much easier.
Thank you! The only endgame checkmate left I needed to learn.
b+n?
Thank you so much for that tutorial. I was trying so hard but the king would escape. But now I am able to checkmate the king easily.
thank you so much. i learnt the two bishops mate from this video and i used this mate and defeated my oppenent just because of your video.
I came here to see this ,as just before I was winning in this situation in a game but didn’t know how to conclude , so I ended up with a draw ! ,! Thanks for your lesson ! I’ll have to practice this to be ready for the future !!
Thank you. My computer monitor appreciates me not hitting it in frustration so much!
That's awesome.
I remember the first time I did this successfully. Good Basic skill to know.
:) thx for your videos, theyve really helped me alot!!!! your website is awsome too :)
I lost track of how many times you said "go ahead and..." I'm not criticizing I just found it humorous. I enjoyed the tutorial :)
Cheers for the lesson

Excellent lesson!!!
thank you really helped me
I finally succeed ! Thanks a lot.
7:30 if the opponent goes h8, easy thing to remember is king f7 mate
Spot on mate.
Kf7#. Mindblown.
thanks this helped me
Thanks for the video
its just very specific piece setups that get complicated..... if i remember correctly from my chess classes, we also had a routine to end a game, with just a bishop, a knight and the king, that was the hardest ender imo
Interestingly enough, at 7:34, if the black king were to move to h8, simply king f7 would be a “revealed” checkmate
Nice video!! Very interesting to know a CHECKMATE is possible in this situation, should I ever find myself in this situation.
Nice video!! I looked for this video after I stalemated with two bishop because I didn't know how to check mate the whites king :(
+Richard Viade Ssame here
same bro
As others have suggested, Stockfish is the way to learn this mate. Centralizing your pieces is always the best start in my opinion - then use the Stockfish method which is 10x more intuitive
I'm gonna go ahead and say gonna go ahead again.
I think I will need a lot of practice with this
Me : tries this
Also me : hangs the bishop and draws
stale mate is a real threat in end games. in this vid alone i spotted multiple stale mates
thank you!
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Just came here to say this:
I watched this video multiple times and studied it and had no help. I used stockfish to show me how to do it and I picked it up right away. I can consistently do this mate noe in about 20 moves average and as low as 14 moves. Not saying this video sucks but if it isn't working for you, try what I did and get stockfish to show you the patterns
me too

thank you, was playting stockfish and got a two bishop endgame :D
Waw, amzing video. I love you(this channel)
My technique is to try to force the king into a corner and move the bishops in one line at the time always one line behind. Maybe not the best but its the one I find to be the easiest.
13 years later, this is still a nice video. The last mating pattern I find unintuitive... the dance between the bishops and king will take some practice.
Thanks Dan. I agree with your assessment. You can try out the end games on my website for extra practice. It's a fun way to keep the end game mind sharp.
thanks bro
I've literally come across this once in my whole life, but at least i'll be prepared if it ever happens again
It's a very rare ending but pretty fun if you can actually pull it off. I have practice boards on my website and I like to go practice every now and then for fun.
At 6:45 you already had checkmate. The move was Bg6 toBf7.Checkmate.
Tried the drills, blundered something like 8/8. Ready to put my practice into work
You can practice on my website if you'd like. I have different board positions with two bishops vs a king and you can play against the computer.
I just had this position online on a chess server. I reached the position here at 7:09, but made the wrong moves from there . It ended in an embarassing stalemate. The two bishop retreats to make way for the King are essential. Hope , I will remember it next time!
thanks
Thanks
thnk you very much
Just Played this endgame, match drawn but I want to learn this how to checkmate😌
Thanks.
at 7:45 if the black king moves to h8 then instead of Be5 to d6 you can just move Kf6 to f7 mate
Pls tell me in what opening this position occurs I am waiting to do this mate
Glad you decided to go ahead and made this video. I wasn't able to go ahead and work it out by myself. Gona go ahead and apply it to my play now.
I can always work the king to the last rank but probably half the time I stalemate or can't complete the checkmate
I just tried to mate with bishops and I managed to figure out how to do it but it took some running around the board and when we got to it the mating move was move 51 so it ended up as a draw. I couldn't believe it.
Man that is too hard
What about at 3:18 Black King moves to f8 or g8 then what
I like the usage of word "fate" haha
Thx for the vid. Ive seen one like this before but not this good. The only problem is, that you most probbably never get to such a situation.
I caint get this to save my life. is the main object to get the king in position? or to move the bishops to drive the king in the corner
thx
Thanks alot it's VERY hard to learn but it did help me. ^﹏^
is it possible to win just by not allowing the king to move like if the bishops form an V mark ish around king?meaning its blacks turn to move but the king cant since hes blocked off, but its not check
That's called stalemate, and it's a draw.
I just draw a game because I didn't know this and ran out of time, thanks!
If you ran out of time you lost you didnt draw
@@zisischartampilas6601 thanks Sherlock

Yesterday I just checkmate with having a king and one bishop. That's a very interesting match...
At 3:20 what if the king goes from F7 to F8 instead of F7 to E8? I’m having trouble with this solution.
same
I got up to 3:33 but the king just keeps going to f8 and f7 what do i do
I have practiced this and am now hoping to use it in a real game, but the chances are very low unless when promoting a pawn you choose a bishop, and in which case you need to be careful to ensure that you end up with both a white square bishop and a black square bishop. Only yesterday I nearly had the opportunity but my opponent, seeing that I was about to promote a pawn, assumed I would choose a queen and resigned!
Sir here repeat steps then what to do
Thanks. I just encountered this endgame for the first time. Ended in a draw unfortunately after 50 moves.
i really like it
Glad you enjoyed it.
After spending bloody 40 minutes on practice trying to do this checkmate I gave up and came to this video...
thnx
@wahimbay98 nope, because of the discovered check.
this happed to me and i lost on time i didn’t know how to checkmate
whats the name of the msuic at the biggining?
Isn't at 7:38, Kh8 just followed by Kf7 discovered checkmate?
can you help me on chess. my opening is e4,e5 nf3, nc8. should i pin his knight with my bishop or develop next knight. tell me if this opening is good or not. all my friends now beat me, because of this crappty opening.
Seriously, I keep on watching, and I keep on trying, and there is only one outcome every time. If this ever comes up then I will just offer a draw and get it over with.
this is helpful to get a general idea of how to do it, but ur black king moves as if he had given up already, real players will try to disrupt you to get rid of 1 bishop, and will play more agressive, constantly trying to get close to your bishops, with every move, in this example he makes it really easy
go ahead, go ahead go ahead oh my god
Now do one where the king h1, a1
At 7:12, if instead of playing Kf6 he plays Bf7+, after ...Kf8, Bd6# is mate without giving the black king two options.
1:33 What if black goes b6? Need answers asap thanks!
Then you get him to the a8 corner and mate him there as shown
This is a rare occupancy
The easiest way to remember this mate:
Box the King in on the b / g file.
7:45 if black goes to h8,then white king f7 would be checkmate
it's a discovered attack, check the board, it's mate
Hard
this is so hard
if the king goes to the h8 square cant you just move your king to f7 mate right?? he should have told that.
at 7:17 if black king goes h8 wight king f7 checkmate
