Good to see this part of our history coming out more. My family is from the Kingston/Mossy WV area off of Paint Creek. They were involved in the Mine Wars

Glad to hear this and great to connect with folks with ties to this area. It is an amazing period of history that deserves more attention, especially in terms of its longterm impacts on central Appalachia’s broader history.
By chance I was just in Beckley WV last week and drove along Paint Creek for a good while. Thanks for watching!

My dads whole side of the family is from Holly Grove, my mothers side is from a place called Whittaker which was taken when they put the turnpike in. They eventually moved to Holly Grove also. Fun fact, There was a point where it was called Holly Grove Station and the little town was called Hudnall WV, I have some old US geological survey maps first done in 1908 and then revised in 1928 listing it as such. I still have several family members that still live in Holly Grove to this day. I am 50 and my grandfather on my mothers side was born in the 1890s and my grandmother in 1900, my fathers parents were also born in the early 1900s so Im only one generation removed from this. Another fun fact, my father, who was born in 1937, went to East Bank high school with Jerry West who happens to be the guy dribbling on the NBA logo.

Thanks for sharing this! By chance do you know when Holly Grove Station and Hudnall combined together and if there was any particular story about when and why that happened?
I’m always sad to hear when towns are leveled by developments. Some of my early grad school research focused on old mountain cemeteries in WV and I can only imagine some were impacted by the turnpike whether being made inaccessible or outright destroyed.
The “Station” part of your story brought back a lot of memories for me as well. I grew up in rural East TN along an old rail line. Several geographic areas nearby had “Station” attached to the name to denote the old train stations once located there.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy the rest of this series.

Had something like this happened to me, I would have been inconsolable. There truly is no limit to the depravity of the capitalists when they are pressured

@OleNessie Thanks for watching! I feel that much of the reason for not reacting came down to the conditions in which workers and their families found themselves. Their backs were pretty much against the wall and they didn’t have the resources to fight for long. John Gaventa wrote a great history of power in this region which might interest you. It’s been a big influence for me. It’s called Power and Powerlessness. Thanks again for watching! Please share the channel with your buddies and check out the full minewars playlist for more heartbreaking history.
