    NEW INFO!! Updated 4/8/2019
    After using this technique for the past half year I have learned that although the Golden gel SHOULD be enough to create a barrier between the wood and the paper, it may be a best practice to apply a coat of Gesso onto the board and lightly sand away the bumps BEFORE adhering the paper using the gel. This will create an additional barrier between the wood panel and the paper just in case there is anything in the wood that may harm the paper. The gel should be fine, but this is an extra step you can take as an additional precaution.

      Actually looking at Golden’s website, they recommend using the soft gel over the heavy gel for more thorough adhesion. Also gloss over matte because the matting agents can obstruct adhesion. Also they recommend sealing the board with GAC 100 to prevent stains from leaching into the paper. Gesso will not do this. And GAC 100 is a liquid so no sanding necessary afterwards.

      @@carollelivelt8625 Thanks! I went to see if I could find the info and I may have found something different? On this page ( www.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo/technicalinfo_gelsmeds ) under the heading "Use as Glue" it says "The Gloss products are usually preferred for this purpose, since they offer the greatest transparency; however, the other sheens work just as well as a glue."
      If you found another page with more info I'll definitely take a look at it

    Hardboard and wood is not neutral ph. You’ll want to gesso board prior to adhering paper since acrylic gel probably isn’t thick enough to form a protective barrier. I think gac 100 will also work.

  • @stephanie.kilgast
    @stephanie.kilgast 4 роки тому +2

    Ideally when working on that raw panel, you want to saturate it with some sort of acrylic binder to avoid warping (wood will gather humidity) and also to prevent the wood resin to seep out. If working with acrylics then add gesso.
    Or do it the old way and layer with real gesso (made from rabbit skin glue) you basically want a primer that glues itself to the support while offering a tooth for the paint.
    I honestly am not too sure about using watercolor paper (I came here to gather info) but seeing how you didn't prepare the panel, I wanted to add that.

      Hi Stephanie, I think you missed my pinned comment where I cover this part. I learned after I made this video that other artists were using gesso to create a barrier on the wood before applying the gel and paper. I watched an old video put out by Golden themselves and this was the method they showed in their video so that's why I originally didn't gesso it. I'll make a new video some day with all the updated techniques I use for better panel preparation, but my current watercolors are all done on cradled panels (for extra stability and prevention of warping) and using gesso. So far they've all held up pretty well =]

    Hey Katie,
    Thanks for another great video.
    I have been doing this for years a collector of mine bought loads of work over the years and recently contacted me saying three older pieces had started to lift around the mdf block base.
    the pieces were done in around 2007 and I believe that they have been moved from hot to cold rooms and one where there may have been frost/condensation in winter and then really hot in summer which is what I feel caused this.
    I have managed to separate the prints from the mount and removed the double-sided adhesive used for the mounting and would now like to find a more secure/permanent fixture before returning them.
    What would you advise and how?
    Many thanks.
    Hugh

      Ahh gosh, I may not be the best person to answer that! I know how to mount fresh paper, but I can't recommend anything other than remounting with a new board like in my video here. I know that extreme temperature shifts and especially moisture are the top things that can damage art no matter how well protected they are, so the collector should be aware it might happen again.
      If you're uncomfortable with attempting to do a re-mount to board, a safer way to preserve work is always under glass, either using matboard or with spacers.

    Thanks so much for this video! I've been wanting to mount my watercolor paper to wood for a while now, but haven't yet learned how to do so. Your video was quick and informative, which I appreciate! One question I do have---do you have any suggestions on what to seal the finished painting with? Normally I use a spray, but this looks like it might be better served beneath a thicker, hand-applied medium.

      Hi Ali! I have not tried sealing a finished painting yet so I don't have a solid recommendation to give at this time, however I plan to try out the Golden brand Satin Archival Varnish Spray. I may also experiment with using a spray first then layering over a more heavy coat of something like liquid varnish in the future. I'm still figuring all of that out myself though!

      Hi Laura! I saw another artist use Mod Podge once, however I'm not familiar with it enough to know if it's safe for use on mounting paintings. You'll still want to seal the board with at least a layer of gesso (though GAC 100 would be better) because normally the Golden Gel I use would have sealed the board. Regular glue might possibly turn your painting yellow or brown over time if it's not acid free or PH Neutral.

  • @FuriedHearts

    Does this method fully prevent buckling? Or will warping still happen slightly?

    • @KatieCroonenberghs
      @KatieCroonenberghs  4 роки тому

      Yes indeed, the entire reason for using this method is to prevent buckling! I have water loaded the paper without any warping or buckling. As long as you apply the gel medium evenly and the paper is well glued down, it will stay flat.

    Hi Katie, thanks so much for sharing your technique and for all the tips!! Two questions: 1. what kind of board did you use? and 2. does the rolling pin/brayer flatten the surface of the watercolor paper? In other words, would it be better to use rough if you wanted a cold press surface, etc. Again, I appreciate you making this video for us.

    • @KatieCroonenberghs

      Hi Everart!
      1. The board I used in this video is an artboard painting panel, however you can use any unfinished wood board for artwork. Check out the links in the description for examples of different kinds of boards you can use

      I would steer clear of MDF or any non-acid-free board for mounting watercolour paper. Foam core/gatorboard is great! You can actually mount them using staples on Gatorfoam instead of gluing if you want to reuse your surface. It is also best to work with professional quality >140lb/300gsm weighted papers if you are gluing it. Anything less will have bleed through of the glue from personal experience.

    • @everartokelli

      Great, tips! Thanks @Zenica204!

    • @KatieCroonenberghs
      @KatieCroonenberghs  6 років тому +1

      Hi Zenica204, I highly recommend not using gaterboard to mount artwork on as it is not acid free or archival (some foam core is, but it needs to be specifically labeled). The technique for mounting watercolor paper in this video is a permanent method and should be used on a surface that is meant to last the lifetime of the piece. Heavy applications of watercolor may affect the board during it's use.
      While foam core and gaterboard are incredibly useful for temporary mounting, they are not meant to be used for artwork but better suited for lightweight building and display.

I used Golden extra heavy gel (gloss) and 140# paper but I guess I missed some spots. Will I need to pull it off and start again? Or, is it possible to cut the paper and squeeze in some gel? Or, should I just use it for a mixed media piece and leave it as is? I, in future, will not try this ever again, late at night!

      Hmm, unfortunately (or rather, fortunately since it's the purpose of mounting the paper lol) after the paper is on there it's pretty much permanent! I have a piece that had a tiny bump in the paper once it dried too and I painted over it anyway, but it was a dark area in the painting so it didn't affect it. You won't want to cut the paper because it will be extremely visible. I feel like your best bet is to use it as is for mixed media, since you won't be able to get the paper off of there again.

But for those who want special sizes, or already have the paper they like and board separate and want to mount it, knowing techniques for making art supplies can be very useful. It's like how you can purchase pre-primed canvas but a lot of artists also stretch their own canvas. Either is good!
