The Complete History Of Top Lane And The Top Lane META
Вставка

- This video will be covering a complete history of top lane, and the META around top lane. Recently, top lane has been the subject of a lot of debate due to hashinshin making the front page of reddit. Bruisers not having a keystone. Wickd, Adrian Riven, Dekar, ICU debate over bruisers and top lane. And I wanted to make a video covering the League of Legends history of the top lane role and the champions.
Thank you all who helped me research this video:

Dude... This took a bunch of time and effort to make, didn't it?
Much respect. Great content.
Rafael Ito thank you!!! Yeah it took about 10 days of research and editing etc
#UnMuteExil
Great video but in season 3 it wasnt just the champions who could abuse cleaver, EVERYONE stacked cleavers.
Example: forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/attachment.php?attachmentid=858864 Lulu support 4 cleavers
Turned out as a great history lesson tho :D really interesting to hear about all that since I've only played from the end of S6
Great work. I hope you get 10 days of ad revenue. 26 minutes, watched the entire thing. Great Video
This brought a tear to my eye... amazing video that hits early season players right in the feels.... i will never forget my awesome times in the top lane before my bruisers got gutted and left to rot away from the rest of the game.... but there is a bright side to this, we got to play other stuff too and we were tasked to deal with something completely different from last season, and it was a great way to get a better understanding of all the champion classes in the game, and the game’s “parts” themselves. From the early game aggression and lane sustain, to the late game, team focused gameplay, we have an opinion for everything, since we have played through all the metas and all these seasons. TOP LANE MAINS, UNITE!!!! ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼
AMEN
lol u can still play bruisers in solo queue. If you're playing against like elite players you'll be punished but it should be fine for the most part.
#United!
I found the light Tryndamere maining top lane. Still get to kill, still get to sustain, have great cs. but fails in an even skill match vs range.
Quit top went jungle and camp top= freelo biblethumb give athmog back😓
Oh man.. #demgoodolddays
Pretty accurate and well made video but you skipped over a lot of historical items that impacted how and why changes were made. Old Ninja tabi and dodge meta, Base crit chance (which is why gangplank was top) Heart of gold, Starks fervor, Executioners calling when it gave you 100% attack speed for 4 seconds, Sunfire Stacking, Boot enchantments, And one that is still in the meta today, corrupting potion which basically started the cancer of top that was Brand
nice old day when u just buy 6x Sunfire and burn enemy to ash with perma invis as Evelin , oh ... but u have point , this video really miss important stuf like dodge and other shit u say .
Fking hated old gangplank with crit runes. He almost 1 shots lv 1
Wasn't that sword of the devine
Also Juggernaut update completely changed every aspect of the meta in every lane.
no talk about philosopher's stone and heart of gold??
Imagine, there are currently people playing lol, who are younger than the game it's self.
Many people still play the original counter-strike which came out 9 years before league, it's not that uncommon
I have a kid that plays that was born a couple months after launch. :P
like I do, don't get me wrong, I have a pretty good PC (i7 7700k + gtx 1070, 16GB RAM etc), but I just cant stop playing CS1.6, I've been playing it since 2002...
Were his first words "Better jungler wins ggez"?
50% of the playerbase actually lul
Damn dude, as a pre season one player this really hit the mark. I've been through most of these metas, I remember the atmogs (we used to do a full 5 man team with atmogs or metagolem with trinity just to troll around), the black cleaver meta (had a lot of fun with pantheon and renekton there), the awful yorick top (which I did play sometime), the "build everything tank" (tank akali, for example), the dreaded elixir of fortitude (as a nasus player, that was awful to play against), the sunfire stacking (both garen, and evelyinn for trolling), the TP, the 2 v 1 sustain top (used to take vlad then, and renekton).
Hell, I remember a time when Lee's E was bugged for us south americans, it allowed us to cast it twice due to lag issues, and it did double damage. It was fun to have an edge on something lol. It all reminds me how much the game has changed, in visuals, meta, balance, items, everything.
I appreciate how much effort you put on your videos, I now this is an older one now since it's 2021 but it's still a good look to the past. Good job.
Rito pls bring back 15 health pot garen
Potion Master Garen was the most balanced
All the top laners is becoming jungle nidalee, shyvanna, camille jax ect
Shayehvana*
Shyvana was always a jungle.
Diamondprox actually revolutionized jungle with it and shown the power of counter jungling
All midlane become support
But rek'sai became top lane.
What about olaf and volibear? 1st one on season 4 was playing on top MOSTLY, 2nd one i see often on jung than on top
Aatrox was really good when zephyr was an item.
it basically gave everything that he needs
Irelia too
Godyr
Aatrox before rework was top3 toplaner RIP Aatrox who got replaced by Riven
I wiuldnt agree more i miss Full attack speed aatrox plus zyphyr
Great video but I think you forgot to include a huge point, the shift to tanks during season 6 was heavily impacted by the Juggernaut update Riot did towards tanks and them redisgning many champions.
"ranged champions are too good."
Well thanks a lot Exil now bruisers are played bot lane. xP
Meh, he's biased because he's a toplaner. In the end of the day, every player complains about it's counter. ADC's/mages complain about assasins, bruisers/tanks complain about ADC's, assasins complain about tanks/bruisers etc.
@@rickvangils100 nah its more like top lane is an island so if you get hard countered by a pick with no weaknesses he stonewalls and neither can play the game to win
@@rickvangils100 you literally couldn't be more wrong mate
@Gunner_kek Please try not to generalize everything. Many assassin mains complain about other assassins that have better burst than them, ADC mains complain about ADCs that have either a better laning or a stronger scaling.
OMG My heart litteraly poped out of my chest when he said "HotShot GG and his nedalee top" Till today when I hear top I remember that shit, never better times than those man...
There weren't ever better but the times of Heart of Gold.
Fabricio Clavel that and atma’s
Fabricio Clavel good meme, those were also the days of sword of divine draven. AKA everyone can be Tyler1
Jack Ream damn, sword of the divine with Draven, I remember when I was a noob and a Smurf fully stacked that item and we got one shotted lmao. Rip
Sword of Divine wasn't a stack item...
Jack Ream my bad Hahahahaha I confused with sword of the occult.
Jesus I nearly cried at 14:05 when you said: "...and armor penetration, the OLD version of lethality..." Man makes me feel old, I still know it as armor pen :(
I've only played seasons 1 and 2, so I can't really compare it to today's meta. But I can confirm how crazy it was to watch HotshotnidaleeGG back in the day. That and Doublelift's Blitzcrank. I think I watched that video "Gather No Rust" like twenty times.
I remember mostly midlane as I was mostly midlaner back in beta and launch of the game. Ashe and TF were always picked mid because of her ability to gank because of their ultimate. Toplane was mostly picks that could be good on their own but weren't as good for ganking if placed mid.
I genuinely miss the time when there was only 30 champs, it was so much fun and so diverse. Ashe mid in particular was such a simple but fun matchup.
i heard runescape music
That twisting frame transition and runescape background music at 15:21 though.
Lol, I remembered the time I played Darius years ago. His 2nd at max level had 99% ms slow for 2 seconds and his 3rd skill also had 99% ms slow for 3 seconds and if you have brutalizer as the first main item and turning it into Black Cleaver and have Randuin's Omen, he was fucking OP as hell! Also, if he got into full build, his popular build suggestions was Black Cleaver as main item for damage and sustainability, Randuin's Omen as his secondary item for defense and durability on mid games, Ninja Tabi or Mercury Threads for extra defense, Thornmail, Ravenous Hydra, and Sunfire Cape. Spirit Visage isn't his primary defensive item and for sustainability because he never had a heal on his 1st skill those days.
i wish that siv hd would come back
Then i have good news for you . He very recently announced on Reddit that he will be shortly getting back on streaming league again , like the good old days !
he uploaded some vids this week
yo
At S2 actually, Shen was picked at worlds because of the insane recovery he gets with Q, with enought AS you could have enough damage to kill the enemy top laner and you would have also a lot of sustain/defense using W (I think it was his shield abillity at the time right?) and Q. His Ult was also another great ability to support his team globally (it had no range requirement to use). Atmogs we're really strong and in SoloQ an Atmogs variant was used with Rammus without stacking Warmogs and it was really strong. I was not a Top laner at the time, but I remember that some of those top lane champions were so strong that they moved to the mid lane over time, where I was playing, and it was a chaos, Riven mid lane was stupid, and I can clearly remember Pobelter playing it flawlessly. Nidalee AD was also another pick that happened because of sustain with her E. And just a note, I really miss the old beta/S1 meta with ADC's in mid, mages/duo lanes on top and also poking supports at bottom, I loved playing Kassadin bot, we would share our farm and help at the start with Q damage and silence, mana drain on W would let you stay at your lane forever. Hope Riot change the game enough to make more champions and stategies viable. For me, the current meta is really, really boring.
I do blame players for meta issues as well. For example, say you wanted to unbalance the other team by taking an APC/support team to the mid lane and putting someone with wave clear in bot lane. It would be very hard to get conservative-minded players to give it a try because it's not a strategy that they've seen in Worlds. But in other MOBAs and Real-Time Strategy games, you are free to try different approaches.
@@arthurfranklin9315 Yeah, but the problem is how the lanes got structured by Riot to enforce the current meta. Like the turret extra defense before 10 minutes making the old lane swap strategie unviable. That also make experimenting a lot harder, cause the game structure have been "evolving" to make junglers a necessary role, as an example. They also did it changing items in a way that supports must have some necessary itens that make experimenting with other champions harder, "buy this item, otherwise you will not have wards to place". How would you be able to play with an assassin as a scaling support if you HAVE to buy a kinda crappy item (for an assassin) to play your role. They're trying to change, just look at Pyke. But again, it's another champion that is basically stuck as a support, because of the damage scaling in his abilities. They are creating different ways to play by creating new champions, not by changing the ones that already exist.
Thank you! Very well researched and informational. Be sure to post it on Reddit, forums, and other outlets.
I started playing league in season 5 - preseason 6. Really fun to see what the game used to be like. Great video
17:52 Nice vídeo my guy, keep up the good work
You forgot the time when sunfire cape was stackable. I expected more than you did, but it was a good video.
Has the biggest throwback moment when Hotshotgg came up
Oh boy I miss my Athmogs+Black Cleaver, Trinity GP.. Never had this much fun since than
Clarification on Black Cleaver. Before season 3 (maaaan was it really that long ago), it was an attack speed/AD item that shredded armor on hit. Only occasionally picked up by ADCs, it wasn't very popular. The rework before League of Black Cleavers seemed to come out of nowhere, and the item suddenly only kinda did what it used to.
Also, before metagolem, we had stacking Sunfires. Fun times.
Amazing short documentary
You forgot "Tankgar Toplane!" Why does everyone forget this period of time! For months after people finally figured out Rengar was better as a bruiser/tank then he was a glass cannon he was pick/ban 100% of the time in nearly every elo until his W got nerfed TWICE along side his original rework that saw his E changed to a skill shot (direct nerf to top lane Rengar btw).
Not too mention when he was first released he was played as a full tank split pushing monster who could do it for free thanks to his ult and W at the time, which was nerfed shortly thereafter. But no one remembers that time either.
It's weird, it's like people refuse to accept the times when Rengar wasn't built as a full glass-cannon assassin, even though for many seasons Koreans never built him as such and dominated far more then anyone else did with him. People only ever want to talk about his Quad-Q and then triple-Q, followed by his "insta-kill combo" and deletion potential, and most of the time those same players are completely oblivious to the Tankgar metas that are the real reason he got reworked so many times. Hell, Rengar's greatest worlds performance was at the hands of DanDy who would build two damage items then straight tank items afterwards!
I think you should do a history of Rengar segment, now that I'm already ranting, cause 90% of players seem to have just forgotten or ignored large swathes of time when Rengar wasn't a glass-cannon and was better off for it. I mean the champ wasn't even designed as an assassin to begin with and only adopted that image after all the meme "deletion" clips that kept making the rounds on the forums and eventually reddit..... but people actually get defensive when given this knowledge, it's like so many just refuse to accept this truth about Rengar, and I seriously do not know why.
Shh you're a tank now Harry xD
This video made me sub. This is the first video I've seen of yours. Very well made.
you should do history of adc, with mordekaiser when he got the buff to take dragons, ziggs when AD teams were meta, twisted fate adc and so on
Red Elixor was always risky to buy. You had to get the kil or you're behind. If you get the kill you're slightly ahead.
I haven't played league since 2013 but this piqued my interest and I'm glad in watched it. Great content!
I was a beta tester for LoL. It had issues for the start. Jax could go into 5v1 fights an win back during beta and they didn't fix it until after launch. But I loved the game even still... until the meta formed. I came from DOTA where you picked counters and had a wide variety of lane strategies. There was no bruser top every time, jungler every time, mid caster every time, carry/support bottom every time. I HATE being locked into one set strategy. It's not fun.
They are so set on the meta that you will get reported and banned for trolling if you don't do what the other players demand you do. For a while I would just keep making alts to play at low levels where the meta wasn't enforced but that wasn't fun.
dont make up that bs please, i agree with you on the first part but please XD "you will get reported and banned for trolling if you don't do what the other players deamnd you do." 1st, you can get reported by anybody, for no reason at all. 2nd if u get reported for no reason at all you will not be punished, report will vanish. 3rd "banned for trolling" yes if u run it down, go 0/15 or some shit, if you play zilean top, or whatever the fucking champion you want, you can't get banned for that, you won't be punished as long as you don't intentionally feed. you can pick sona top, get reported by 9 people in ur match, you wont get punished as long as u didn't int so dont make up so much bullshit please.
Either way, nothing was more fun to play then Vlad top, with spell vamp and maxing E.
Not only that you cleared whole wave with one spell, but you damaged the shit outta them AND healed it all back :^)
Wriggle's Lantern was also huge for lane sustain back in the day.
This on olaf top free ward to go agro with rip
give this man a medal, great content every video
That was an extremely well made video. Kudos man
3:33 this man is gaming in heaven
best part of the video was hearing runescape music throughout the vid!
Wow, good job.
thank you man :D
So true, i play top lane.
And its definitely more about enemy jungle pressure and a competition on farming minions.
Thanks for the awesome video. Memories of season 3 came back to me.
"RIGHT THROUGH THE COUNTERSTRIKE!"-Hashinshin
You missed old guinsoo's, sword of the occult, sword of the divine and old fiora
Started playing league in season 4 with Fiora toplane and now im an adc main...
Funny how things change, huh? Started in S2 with jungling tanks, moved to top lane to escape tanks... then tanks still follow. :(
Quickly, go main adc so tank adcs are a thing!
Calm down satan... tank adcs already existed thanks to how absurd Warmogs was back then, Vayne was queen in those few patches.
or you just give the adc a janna.
Hell yeah I mained the old Fiora too and It was one of the must fun things I've ever played en LoL
The Intro song is Home-We're finally landing and yes its the one from summoning salt
I'll be honest, I am still bitter that my Atmogs GP (with Mallet or Trinity of course, because the Q needs to be more annoying) does no longer exist. In hindsight it was kinda stupid but damn I loved it.
15:13 is lee blind or something kappa
i used Elixir of Fortitude with top Rengar, double Q, and sometimes i wouldn't even need ignite. First Blood everytime
Xin Zhao in season 2 with old black cleaver was somewhat OP too
Dang he's playing the video essay song. I'm excited for the video, but I've heard this music too much
The juggernaut meta made me want to die. Fiora, Garen, Darius were the 3 most rip your hair out frustrating top Laners to play against.
been playing since season 2.. i agree the worst top lane meta was season 5 and 6, ice born, grasp, and sunfire were redic vs any bruiser top lane
Amazing to randomly hear that lovely Runescape soundtrack, really enjoyed the video!
Im surprised you didnt talk about stoneplate and chogath meta
It's important to know that part of all of it was players getting way better at the game. LS kind of went over this in a video that defense is always superior to offense no matter what it is, video games or actual sports, and as league players figured that out it was inevitable that league would become a "tank" meta. Also at the beginning, you mentioned morgana kennen and other mages; morgana is only a counter pick to other mage tops like rumble kennen and lulu. Kennen is a meta dependent champion.
man I remember Atmogs/Metagolem. Played a bunch of J4 back in those days.
Watching the first championship is always funny to me. It looks like a backyard wedding compared to now
How can you not talk about when season 5 hit and every toplaner was running smite with the jungle item??? and also trinity fizz
I know it takes time, and sooo much effort on your part, but could you do this with the bot lane since this season basically went back to season 1?
Getting some real summoning salt vibes
Final note, it depends on the players to who is better in the Zed vs Azir. Because one of them might be an ape and blow combo, and get returned full combo'd this putting them behind.
Please... click my lantern!
15:10 that runescape music tho
as a jax main from season 1 i wanna cry right now
Two years later and I really fucking wish it was a tank vs tank toplane (but then again I main tanks)
So much respect for the Runescape music
Thx for this VOD so good
18:16 I remember watching that when gosu put it up. I think the vid was called I love being adc. That was the season ADC's were useless and top lane tanks were king. He was super popular and thought to be the best vayne then. He was a faceless legend until QT 1v1 him to death and kicked his ass constantly
Great video. But it’s a little wrong now because the tank meta is over with conqueror and Irelia and Aatrox and other fighters and AP like rumble and swain and Kenneth top
I play top but its kinda fun tanking 50 tower shots for your team to get that 350 gold shutdown
That RuneScape nostalgia... OMG
should have mentioned the patch where range minions got nerfed giving a very helpful hand against ranged top laners playing as a melee bruiser early on was a nightmare vs ranged top laners.
Did I miss the part talking about smite cinderhulk top, that was my least favorite time, however short it may have been
tanks can fight even with bruisers in lane in early game, after becoming too tanky for a bruiser to kill, they still deal crazy amount of damage, thats just stupid
It's almost 6 in the morning and I don't even play top lane why did I watch this entire video....
fuck fuck fuck fuck, why did i see the season 3 ryze, i got goosebumps , full tank mage that still oneshot a entire team
Thanks for reminding all those thing !!!
You didnt mention AP Rengar with DFG and LichBane top lane oneshotting the ENTIRE ENEMY team
u forgot 2 mention the dodge rate meta like jax with ninja tabis with 80% dodge rate
last year (2017) felt like it was a lot of carry top lanes at least in Korea with Khan. they won cus no one els in the whole league couldnt carry from top not even Smeb. Also you have to look at the rest of the meta for ever other lane, if its a bot heavy meta you need a strong tank usually top lane cus its easier to fit in then in the jungle or mid.
They don't even list bruisers as a class in the game anymore, only fighters.
remember when fiora's ult was a gigantic yi Q?
Much prefer her old ultimate, hell her entire old kit to the current Fiora.
That vid bring lots of Vieatnam Flashbacks
That runescape background music though
Thumbs up for the effort good sir!
What is the creepy music that plays during the Elixir of Fortitude section?
Still miss my atma’s impaler on Garen top. ☹️
Top lane main since season 1. Remarkably accurate.
And yes, Atmogs meta was stage 4 cancer. People built it on Malphite, ffs. Like, does the champ ever auto-attack? Does it have a health bar? Then build atmogs, gg. And BC meta, oh lord. Literally 10 BC in some games. Every champ.
You kids today don't know. Back in my day...etc.
Damn, not even a mention on the juggernaut meta.
Oh force of nature i've missed you
You know, its funny. I absolutely hated playing in s6 because of tank meta but i made it to diamond one tricking kat xD
I don't know what to say. Some of this stuff is a little funny to me, since Yorick, Jin, Riven, and Skarner were all considered broken and overpowered on release. Plenty of the initial cast of characters had high sustain, with Poppy, Singed, Mord, Olaf, etc. that would go top, mostly because the Jungle was /hard/, something you're not mentioning. Monsters in the jungle gave less stuff, few buffs, and hit like bricks, so you had to really, really understand your timing and get help with off-Jungle characters, or rely on characters like Udyr or Warwick. Sustain WAS a thing. Sustain, for FREE, wasn't. Cooldown based top lane heroes, high damage with no damage item heroes, and the introduction of ranged "melee" (Riven, Darius) ruined top lane and shifted it away from the variety you used to be able to get. Take characters like Sion, whom spammed their abilities over and over - long cooldowns, HUGE mana costs. Mord lost a LOT of hp in casting his abilities, unlike Vlad. I feel this video very, very, VERY poorly represents the state of pre-Season 1, and then the Post-Season 1 releases of champions that caused massive power-creep that led, directly, to a majority of the original cast to have entire and repeated reworks, or for characters to be left in the dust for years (Poppy) only to be ruined later. Singed, one of my favorite characters, seems to be the only one to escape unscathed in both his general item selection, and his kit, and is one of the few recognizable old characters and I count my luck every time. Fans of AD bruiser Nidalee, fans of AP Tristana, fans of the simple variety of being able to choose between two major playstyles for at least half of the cast have been left behind in the new streamlined system of stuns, flashes, and "knockups". This game needs a proper CLEANSE-ing.
I loved tank meta. S6 was so fun
15:25 holy moly iS THAT RUNESCAPE MUSIC??
19:50 Runescape Music =D
I love all the Runescape music in this.
Used to main lulu top, that shit was fun
