That actually confuses me because the LA county minimum wage is $13.25 an hour, and even if she’s not in LA county the CA minimum wage is $11 an hour. So for 40 hours a week the least she could legally make would be about $23,000 a year (pre-tax).
She is absolutely being robbed. Even I have made more money as an office administrator and I'm in my 20's. If she could even start making 30k a year literally at any other kind of office assistant/secretary/administrator job then she would feel so much relief. Plus if she worked a side hustle with Uber or something then she might be able to peck at some of this debt and move up the career ladder at the same time.

40 hours a week is light duty. She has to pick up another job until she goes to school to get a better job, and sell the car. She doesn't have anything yet she owns a car worth a years salary and paying on it. She can't afford more than a 1000 dollar car. But you have to look good right?
Sakib Bin Salam some people cannot grasp that they are poor. I am going through this. I have a car and insurance but I'm also paying a $5,000 credit card and paying for community college. Florida is minimal $100 monthly for insurance.
I'm thinking she probably committed to the car when times were good, before her ex-husband flushed their lives down the pan. I cannot begin to imagine how much stress this woman has gone through, it's also a reason why she is in such a tailspin that she is willing to work so much for so little.

I'm also assuming this is after taxes. What a lot of people in the comments are not realizing is that this was in 2017 when I think the minimum wage for small businesses was like $10.50/hr. You can also deduct a week or two for holiday closures which are usually unpaid for hourly workers. With all that considered she probably made about 20k before taxes so the $16,500 likely wasn't far off.

16,500 a year equates to $7.93 an hour. $10.50 an hour was minimum wage in California in 2017. ($12.00 if there were more than 25 employees.) Something is wrong here!
This breaks my heart, truly. It really puts things into perspective. I just spent $200 on headphones, and this caller is struggling just to feed her kids. This really makes me think about how I spend my money.
i dont get why people are sorry for her like that?? she's 38 and clearly she made tons of bad decisions in her past - like not making a career, no education, no real skillsets. On top of that they love to have kids, so if 2 weren't enough she chose to adopt another while she can't even feed them. Clearly she's digging a sink hole herself
If she's adopting the child from CPS, then she's going to get a monthly stipend ~$500-$550/month - almost her monthly salary. Her sobbing was inconsistent, but I can see to what end. There's something else happening.
What? Just what? She's making $1,375 a month. $500 is not close to half her monthly income. What's this about her sobbing? Not a good enough show for you I suppose?
how is it even legal for her to work full time in california and get paid 16k? Minimum wage is already $11. She's making way less than even McDonald's would pay.
Perfect example of why we need to raise the minimum wage and provide low cost (or free) options for job training for higher skilled jobs. (the data show a high long term return on investment for education and training) Dave is right about the car at least. It's never smart to finance a car.
Caller: 'I live in Los Angeles California and I make $16K a year, and I am a single mother' Dave: 'What do you do for a living' Caller: 'I am on full welfare bennies'
It is remarkable that SHE has to adopt the 6 months old, what kind of family is that. Also: she could go elsewhere and clean houses and make more money.
terrible situation but what I find crazy is there are people in WAY higher debt and seem to be fine. I watched another video where the family was literally 750k in debt but they seemed happy and lived in a nice house, etc. Lots of different factors i know but man I hope she pulls thru
That 6 month old will get snatched up easily by a good family. I hate how family gets first dibs even though they are in no position to have another child.
I can relate to this because in some locations the wage is so low that almost everyone is in poverty and employers cut hours to save money with part time workers. The car dealers take advantage of the poor with stupid finance charges and inexpensive vehicles are hard to find unless its a total POS... This is REAL LIFE and a typical hourly worker!
Illegals are almost never paid under the table. The IRS doesn't care about immigration status, they get their payroll taxes. Vast majority of business in CA have substantial assets and pay their payroll taxes.
Sad story, well she atleast kicked him out thats a good start. Sorry but adopting wasnt a good idea a foster parent will give that kid a much better life most likely.
That’s so sad that he decided to do drugs and be selfish - what made him turn to drugs as a married father knowing that his wife didn’t have the financial means to support everyone? I’m sorry this happened to her; poor thing.
She has a kind heart to adopt a small baby but she can't afford it. This baby would be better off adopted into a two parent home with the means to provide a good standard of living. This is not fair to the child to live in poverty with auntie.
I don't know how often Dave goes into this, but if this woman's story is correct, that she's somehow making less than minimum wage, she would qualify for SNAP, TANF, Medicaid for herself and her kids, Section 8 housing, WIC (for the 6 month old), and a whole host of other programs like Wheels to Work (DHS provides a car/assistance with your car). Does Dave ever talk about public assistance options? These could make a big difference for her; I know Section 8 can take years to get into but SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid are pretty fast to apply and be awarded.
Well the 18 year old can help, he has to get a part time, Deliver pizza, newspapers, coffee shop something... and the 15 year old can look for ways to make money, go around the neighborhood offering to wash their cars, mow their lawn, shovel snow, walk their dogs, they gotta help the their mom.
18 year old and 15 year old have no responsibility to their mother. 18 year old is inn college and 15 year old needs to focus on school to leave this mess behind. Adopted baby needs all attention
No, let them be kids, give back third baby, that one has two parents and four grand parents, or let it go to foster care, find a job for min wage. TELL your children this is what happens when you marry right out of HS and no job skills
Great idea, so the kids will end up uneducated like their parents since they won’t have the time to study. They will most likely end up like this anyway.
Don't go into debt for vehicles people unless you already have the $$ in the bank. Then you are building your credit. I buy all vehicles and equipment lightly used. Saves alot of $$.
If she really is working 40 hours per week for 16 grand she is being robbed. She could work almost anywhere else for more.

Perfect example of why we need to raise the minimum wage and provide low cost (or free) options for job training for higher skilled jobs. (the data show a high long term return on investment for education and training)
Dave is right about the car at least.
It's never smart to finance a car.
Dave’s a genius he states the obvious. Wow how does he do it
Caller: 'I live in Los Angeles California and I make $16K a year, and I am a single mother'
Dave: 'What do you do for a living'
Caller: 'I am on full welfare bennies'
5/16/19....NO DRUGGIES IN MY HOUSE....OR ANYWHERE AROUND ME! NO EXCEPTIONS B/C MOST DRUGGIES DON'T STOP USING!
my dad fr
My heart goes out to this lady. ❤️
It is remarkable that SHE has to adopt the 6 months old, what kind of family is that. Also: she could go elsewhere and clean houses and make more money.
I make $13.50 as my first job. How do people find the lowest paying jobs ever created? I dont think i could find a job paying less than 9 or 10.
How do you call Mr. Ramsey?? I am so glad I found this show!!!
I'd say sell the husband because he's a bad investment, but that'd be a hard sale.
Listening to this broke my heart. Hope shes doing better
My heart breaks for them. . . I hope things are better now.
I pray she does better in the future. Her voice just says it all. She needs help. This wasn't easy to listen to
terrible situation but what I find crazy is there are people in WAY higher debt and seem to be fine. I watched another video where the family was literally 750k in debt but they seemed happy and lived in a nice house, etc. Lots of different factors i know but man I hope she pulls thru
If this was the ID channel he would be dead and she would be the recipient of a large insurance policy.
That 6 month old will get snatched up easily by a good family. I hate how family gets first dibs even though they are in no position to have another child.
Life is a bunch of crossroads, always make the decision with your head not your heart at every crossroad.
her story doesn't add up
I can relate to this because in some locations the wage is so low that almost everyone is in poverty and employers cut hours to save money with part time workers. The car dealers take advantage of the poor with stupid finance charges and inexpensive vehicles are hard to find unless its a total POS... This is REAL LIFE and a typical hourly worker!
Man my heart is breaking for her
Leave him immediately tf are you doing. He will only destroy you along with himself
Edit: listening in I learned she already divorced him. Good on her
Typical replulcian.
I completely agree, and she should also turn him into the police asap since he is breaking the law.
Drummergeorge what do you even mean?
Cameron You can delete the first part of your comment instead of adding an edit later since it doesn’t mean anything anymore.
Sorry Lady you're going thru this... i know it is not easy but leave him! Just leave him!!!!:(:(
The way her entire demeanor changes when she talks about her 3 kids😢❤ her husband is bringing on darkness to her life and her kids bring her life!!❤
Is she a legal citizen, because she said she is not even making minimum wage. Is she working "under the table"?
Under the table is tax free, so its equivalent to way more
Illegals are almost never paid under the table. The IRS doesn't care about immigration status, they get their payroll taxes. Vast majority of business in CA have substantial assets and pay their payroll taxes.
Tracee Johnson: Why is that even a question in this situation? She’s hurting. She needs help.
You picked a winner! Congrats!
She has a kind heart to adopt a small baby but she can't afford it. This baby would be better off adopted into a two parent home with the means to provide a good standard of living. This is not fair to the child to live in poverty with auntie.
Omg I feel so bad for this lady 😢😩
No matter what 45k or whatever is A LOT of money to spend on credit ...
LESSON, DONT GET MARRIED AND PREGNANT RIGHT AFTER HS.
As soon as he said she was from Los Angeles I was not surprised.
Poor lady. Hope she gets out of this mess.
How tf is this woman living in LA with that kind of income
I don't know how often Dave goes into this, but if this woman's story is correct, that she's somehow making less than minimum wage, she would qualify for SNAP, TANF, Medicaid for herself and her kids, Section 8 housing, WIC (for the 6 month old), and a whole host of other programs like Wheels to Work (DHS provides a car/assistance with your car). Does Dave ever talk about public assistance options? These could make a big difference for her; I know Section 8 can take years to get into but SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid are pretty fast to apply and be awarded.
Where do you find a job that pays that little. Must be hard to find
She needs to move out of LA... she can make $16,500 anywhere in America.
No it ain't the kids fault the parents are stupid
She sounds like a person who has made awesome decisions all her life
