I WAS LIVING AT ALAGOMEJI YABA WHEN REX AND HIS BAND ARRIVE TO LAGOS FOR THE FIRST TIME THEY WERE AT ALBERT MERCULEY IN FRONT OF CENTRAL HOTEL AND CLOSE TO SEGUN BUCKNORS FAMILY, THEY GO TO JOLLY PAPA'S PLACE AND HAVING FUN DRINKING SMOKING AND SINGING, THEY WERE LIKE FAMILY AND I JUST LOVE TO BE AROUND THEM.MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PERFECT PEACE CARDINAL REX LAWSON
the drums, his voice . Saw him strolling his house in Gborokiri Portharcourt in 1967 while I was a student at St. Pius Ogoni and watched him play this tune in Elele town during the Biafra war in 1968. As a kid he just smiled at me. Legendary. You will live forever!!
He is, without question, the best musician Nigeria has ever produced. His angelic voice is so soothing that it can be compared to a sedative. The day he died in a vehicular accident will, forever, remain in infamy. What a colossal loss!
Great Icon of our generation. My Dad your friend told me about you as a highlife legend and haven listened to your music speaks so much about you. RIP Erikosima
In those days...and years...1962,1963,1964...There was a certain dance step called MADISON...Very popular among Secondary/High School Students...They danced it during Ukonu's Club on TV every Saturday...Reminds me of the Producer of that programme,A.E.Ukonu..Anyaogu Ukonu...wonderful personality,dancer,Tv-programmes producer, trained professional at his job...Back to the MADISON dance step in vogue at that time...Rex Lawson's hit song/track TAMUNO GBO IBROMA was used, played and danced to showcase MADISON..fitted like a glove...People enjoyed dancing The Cha-Cha-Cha...Native blues,Rhumba...Rex was a super dancer...we tried to copy his stagewalk...his simple and handsome hairstyle..His dressing code on the bandstand stage.. Rex was the first guy I saw, wearing an exquisite suit of very expensive woolen fabric, yet the white shirt he wore under the jacket was not tucked into his trousers/pants...Everything he did...people copied...Take a cool look at his picture(above)..His goatee beard, dark sunglasses,he even wore during midnight gigs, his cap...the expression on his face...He was almost every woman's or lady's man,too...He was truly handsome, exhuberant and more..and more..He drank and smoked...but Never Never Ever Messed Up...He was truly on a mission...He finished as his creator wanted him to....Phiam!!!...He left us when the ovation was loudest and ear- bursting..
I will be very very very if all of Rex records could be rewax i mean @ one or three places so we could enjoy it better and publish it so that it will be knowing for us
