Hearing this by its own without Lars clearly says a few things.
1. The mixing was bad
2. Guitars sound sloppy, playing was fine but the tone lacks gain.
3. My liking to Kirk's solo ideas are plumetting.
Metallica needs to get their shit together and produce a good sounding album irregardless what they want to play. I have ear fatigue listening to the overly loud drums, overused of wah pedal, drowned bass and muddy guitars.

About the mixing in general: The musical industry as a whole is, unfortunaly, moving towards this kind of mixing (lots of compression, vocal burying and whatnot)... It's down to us to have audio gear and manual equalization to (try to) make things sound "better".
About the solos: Everything since Hardwired is being improvised by Kirk so, for me, those recent solos sounds just like random shreding lol (which is kind of a bumer since his Portals EP sounds amazing).

@@multitracking yes i agree, Portals sounded great, composition and the sound mixing was good.
I was hoping Metallica learnt something from the Portals album, but nah.. Lars and James still prefer Louds drums and mellowed down guitar tones. I have ear fatigue listening and figuring out the playing and parts

​@@multitracking exactly, i expected more craftsmanship from Kirk and James musically since Kirk had blooded teeth sice he lost his phone, and i think the ep is a great redemption but for the new Metallica him and Rob should have more in a sense, just imagine what kinds of riffs that didn't make it on the ep, and just imagine robs flamingo style what cool things they could do to accompany James and Larses cool rythm, riffs and drumming senssions can bring to the table, Altho i think this seasons album is good enough to warrant an "beyond seasons" ep where they make 4 new bonus songs from the stuff that was cool enough but didn't quite make it on the record.

it's not metallica's fault but it's of the app he used. you can hear the REAL isolated guitar track in songs like room of mirrors, chasing light and too far gone when the intro ends and starts the main riff played only by james.
