And now my usual two cents about the topic. I'm a Chaos Magician, I've been so since I was sixteen and now I'm thirty. The real point of Chaos Magick is that Chaos Magick is all and nothing, its motto is "nothing is real, everything is permitted". One starts, just starts, with sigils, the concept of kia and books (please read that Carrol's book, sweet mother, if you want to start, please read that book!). Or also these are concepts are good for the casual pratictioner; but the real goal, for the one who wants to achieve a real experience in this practice, is to create your own magical "paradigm". This term is used also in the practice named "paradigm shifting", but if you want the real experience, aim at the creation of your own paradigm, made up by your own correspondeces, using the archetypes you want to use and the practices you feel are good for you, both in mind and in acts, words and all the rest. In this case sigils have a whole new usefulness, becoming links to that archetypes and forces you want to use or feel to have to use. To practice Chaos Magick is to understand that tradition has no real practical value, and in reality, all the people who started traditions, both in religion and magic, were in fact Chaos Magician. You can see this everywhere. Take for example the creation of the Ark of the Covenant as it is in the bible, you will see that it's not so different from a spirit box you can create employing hoodoo tecniques, that's clearly a magical practice aimed at the creation of a material sigil (and by the way, hoodoo is very similar to Chaos Magick, but that's another topic). Or look carefully at those gothic grimoires and those " "symbols" of the devils; those are really magic sigils created with the "literal sigil tecnique", really! Look for example the symbol of Malphas you can clearly see that is an elaborate literal sigil, for instances the two arrow shaped lines in the middle are a separation of the letter "M", or the round shape on the left with the two lines going up and down, that is the letter "P", the rectangular shape in the middle is an "H" rotated of 90 degrees, the two circle above the rectangular shape are a repetition of the letter "S" rotated in the same way, and you can distinguish the "A" like a rotation of 90 degrees of that "P" united with the two orizontal line of the rectangular shape as well as in those two arrow shaped lines in the middle. And the whole grimoire is like this, every symbol, knowing the way I showed, can be decomposed in the same way; maybe some are more elaborated like the example in Carrols book, certanly the style is different from that, but is the same in every symbol in the grimoire. Chaos Magick is everywhere and always has been, every sorceror that developed a practice, every priest that started a cult, they where Chaos Magician without knowing it, before the term was coined! So if you want to be a Chaos Magician, start your own little tradition, remembering that "nothing is real, everything is permitted" to you and to everyone who wants so. With creativity, we'll fill the space, we'll fill ourselves and be! For life itself is only a vision, a dream, nothing exists save empty space and you, and you are but a thought! I live in San Francisco and there is someone putting a bunch of this on a corner, newar Golden Gate park. It's really normally about transmutation with lots of pyramids, Star Wars characters, sometimes along with stuff about The U.S. ushering some ambiguousness. It goes almost around the block sometimes..There's always something about this country with other symbols and arrows pointing down or spiraling around.
I'm wondering if that's work put up by Joe Roberts, that sounds like him- he mixes up iconography like that, mixing DMT aliens and teenage mutant ninja turtles with pyramids and repeating glyphs. He has a book called "LSD WORLD PEACE", maybe check out his art and see if it looks familiar?
I couldn't help but notice a few similarities: First, that the Choas magick Techniques for Controlling the Mind (Posture/Breath/No-mind) is identical to the zen buddhist practice of mindfulness meditation. This is not just in how it is done, but also in its purpose of liberating one's self from Conditioned States (not to mention all the other benefits of mindfulness meditation). Second, that the Gnosis state, or "State of Full Potential", sounds a lot like the idea of Quantum Superposition in Quantum Physics, how unobserved particles exist in a fuzzy state of all possibilities until it is observed, then collapses into one result. Except in the Chaos method, that result is guided by Will. Thanks again for another illuminating vid!

This is a great video! I'm a dragon magick practioner (which you definitely should do a video on) and I've been really looking into adding chaos magick to my practice. I love how chaos magick is against dogma as well as ritual when it's unnecessary to accomplish the same result. Thanks for this video! I also see that you edit with Davinci Resolve which is what I use as well. 👍👍
The idea of making a personal sigil makes sense in light of some ways I can imagine magic working - i.e. it focuses the mind, and it's highly secretive, which might dispel any self-doubts based on what you think others might think. At the same time, I've heard the general idea that what gives traditional words and rituals their power is that all the other people who have used or participated in them have given them an enduring existence in the collective unconscious. That makes sense to me too. It's a bit like the idea that shared thoughts can create structures in the astral plane, which I've also read somewhere - possibly Dionne Fortune's Psychic Self Defence. These two ideas - of a personal sigil and if a traditional ritual - seem contradictory, but perhaps they're both equally valid. I can imagine that highly focused personal intent can be a factor, whilst being able to draw in some way on an established recognition of what symbols and rituals mean has advantages too. Perhaps it's like being able to pull very hard in a tug of war versus having some help. Then again, I'm sure people have argued that focused intention is all that matters, and the only advantage of using time-honoured procedures is that it gives people the confidence that what they're doing is effective. It's hard to imagine how anyone could test these competing ideas - at least in a standard scientific way.

My personal theory based on some of the pre-Kabbalistic/Gnostic texts I've read, is that Chaos is the natural state of Creation before the divine gnosis, the Word so to speak, gave shape to it. Chaos magic is using that divine spark with a person to shape Creation in the same way at a much, much, much smaller scale.

I read a little bit of Peter J Carroll and Phil Hines' works. Very interesting material. I think you did a great job of giving a condensed breakdown of the basics. I really enjoyed the video.
I started on this path in an unrealized way years ago. Didn't really practice persay, but my inquisitive mind saw the truths and personally enlightening qualities in different religions and spiritual roads, as well as commonalities that linked them. Couple of years ago, I was incredibly interested in realizing my own power but didn't really know where to start. So like, eventually I randomly (honestly I don't remember how) I came across a video from a conference of some sort and the speaker was Grant Morrison, mostly known as a great comic writer, but also Chaos Magician. I heard him reference it and I remember thinking that it sounds cringy like someone trying to be edgy but it didn't take long for me to understand why it was called such and then his description of sigils and their prevalence in society itself made SO much sense to me. I just... Got it. So from there I studied and have been a practicing magician since. Ashamedly, I seem to lean into it in times of distress more than times of normality. I'm not sure if this is common or not. Anyway, it was nice to have a refresher on basics and history from such a beautiful person, and I absolutely love your scholarly intellect. *Oh! In trying to not make an essay, I forgot to mention that I did learn something new from this that I want to look into more. The creation of a Mantra sigil. Never thought about this, but I love the idea. Wonder if creating not only a typical sigil but a complimenting mantra would have any real additional effects?

It is so interesting to find out that the practice that I have endeavored in for the past several decades has a name and to some extent been codified, and labeled. I haven't read Crowley, Carroll, or the like but through reading Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Some small bits I have gathered from other sources, but I never seemed to finish the books. High ceremony seemed like a waste of time, and I never had the space anyways. The sigils shown were more than I ever went through, I used simple one word focus, either in a circle, or out. Finding the point of affectation (in the meditation)is like pushing a boat in to a lake, or ocean, and expecting to reach a destination. It works on occasion. Active, and passive practice are key. Once gnosis has been found, even if just a little, then the untrodden path opens before you.
Excellent job, lovely Angela! I read Peter Carroll in the 90's sometime. I find his methods to be a little wonky at times but usually extremely effective. It takes discipline to be an effective magician and I think once that is understood then any system that applies to ones proclivity is going to be affective.
I love this explanation! Of not having intrinsic ontological nature! I'd often thought of it as being a catalyst of sorts that only activates when blended or alchemized with purpose and actually explosive outward rather than inward in itself! Very cool!! More impactful in its tools and methods and applications and reasoning versus innate philosophy or innate searching for meaning! That's where it's strongest, I think. As a powerful tool. Otherwise it nudges into a kind of philosophical nihilism perhaps, which may not be helpful for some in drawing conclusions about meaning of life and even reality itself?
Have you read any of the Gallery of Magick's books? I find their very simple methods refreshing and I have gotten results. This was a quick but informative video, thank you, and Happy New Year.

After watching the last few videos covering the practical divergence of the left from a right, I felt compelled to emphasize that, with such potential, whether bound by canon or within ritualistic methodology, or the unbound, all magick exists as we know it, philosophically and practically, remains singular in the aspect that it is the alpha AND the omega, drawing from and returning to everything. Even when attempting to subvert anything in favor for another, everything remains to serve us BECAUSE we are aware that if we don't encourage the servitude of everything, there would be nothing. Everything affects personal ethos and personal ethos affect everything but it is still an affectation so, while some of us practice from the inside outward and others from the outside inward, this is NOT what is being portrayed as the benevolent versus the malevolent, BOTH are on the path you take, the left AND the right. Angela, I have noticed there are several similarities in some of the practices and ideals of Chaos magic to Daoist practices. Although the core of pretty much all energy and intent practices are stillness, observation, and breath control. Chaos magic seems more comparable to Daoist practices than those of an Indian yogic approach. I was wondering if you have done any research with Daoist Magic, talismans, meditation, and energy practices? It is a very deep rabbit hole to go down of different areas practices. A good resource for Daoist magical practices if you are interested. is Jerry Alan Johnson's Daoist magical materials.
You should go easy take time. Make curves experiment making words. That's it. Artistic view is of also Venus ,moon . And these booth are good for boosting intentions as magic. Try it

This and the philosophy one, are a pretty good Chaos magick intro 1.01. Speaking from experience tho, people need to be damn sure their thinkings clear and straight, their hearts committed to the unknowable outcome, and their will (which is manifested thru the sigal) is clear and unambiguous. In the early days of experiments with C... M... some will use terms like *abundance* as an outcome. Big mistake 1.01. The ALL ie the mental construction we call reality, does not differentiate between between black and white, thus can deliver what we could experience as disastrous. Then again, it could be your secrets hearts desire, -which again, is not always a good thing, especially if, say addiction prone, or such. The levers of the universe are there waiting ifif you dare but it always freaking pays to be very aware of many a sudden Sticky snare on the iron road to the final freaky fair. where everything is said to be lighter than air, but don't get fooled by the costumes. I'm more into the way of thinking of Chaos Magick than into its most common practices, concepts and authors. I followed Aleister Crowley so much, that at some point my view of spirituality became what you explain in your video about the philosophical features of Chaos Magick, but everything else about the system bores me to death

Chaos Magick spells also sometimes require a power scource it can be cosmic like a Constellation of stars a nebula the Universe a black hole a Magnatar, Could be biological energy from a group or single person animal or nature itself. There are other power sources electrical, cosmic, electromagnetic magnetic, life force, frequency, light, chemical, crystal, otherworldly dimensions underworld or spiritual.
I invented a method of creating audible sigils using a combination of the methods in this video and a little music theory a few years back. If you like, I could record a small demonstration of it for you sometime.

The idea of making a personal sigil makes sense in light of some ways I can imagine magic working - i.e. it focuses the mind, and it's highly secretive, which might dispel any self-doubts based on what you think others might think. At the same time, I've heard the general idea that what gives traditional words and rituals their power is that all the other people who have used or participated in them have given them an enduring existence in the collective unconscious. That makes sense to me too. It's a bit like the idea that shared thoughts can create structures in the astral plane, which I've also read somewhere - possibly Dionne Fortune's Psychic Self Defence.
These two ideas - of a personal sigil and if a traditional ritual - seem contradictory, but perhaps they're both equally valid. I can imagine that highly focused personal intent can be a factor, whilst being able to draw in some way on an established recognition of what symbols and rituals mean has advantages too. Perhaps it's like being able to pull very hard in a tug of war versus having some help.
Then again, I'm sure people have argued that focused intention is all that matters, and the only advantage of using time-honoured procedures is that it gives people the confidence that what they're doing is effective. It's hard to imagine how anyone could test these competing ideas - at least in a standard scientific way.

My personal theory based on some of the pre-Kabbalistic/Gnostic texts I've read, is that Chaos is the natural state of Creation before the divine gnosis, the Word so to speak, gave shape to it. Chaos magic is using that divine spark with a person to shape Creation in the same way at a much, much, much smaller scale.

I started on this path in an unrealized way years ago. Didn't really practice persay, but my inquisitive mind saw the truths and personally enlightening qualities in different religions and spiritual roads, as well as commonalities that linked them.
Couple of years ago, I was incredibly interested in realizing my own power but didn't really know where to start. So like, eventually I randomly (honestly I don't remember how) I came across a video from a conference of some sort and the speaker was Grant Morrison, mostly known as a great comic writer, but also Chaos Magician.
I heard him reference it and I remember thinking that it sounds cringy like someone trying to be edgy but it didn't take long for me to understand why it was called such and then his description of sigils and their prevalence in society itself made SO much sense to me. I just... Got it. So from there I studied and have been a practicing magician since. Ashamedly, I seem to lean into it in times of distress more than times of normality. I'm not sure if this is common or not.
Anyway, it was nice to have a refresher on basics and history from such a beautiful person, and I absolutely love your scholarly intellect.
*Oh! In trying to not make an essay, I forgot to mention that I did learn something new from this that I want to look into more. The creation of a Mantra sigil. Never thought about this, but I love the idea. Wonder if creating not only a typical sigil but a complimenting mantra would have any real additional effects?

It is so interesting to find out that the practice that I have endeavored in for the past several decades has a name and to some extent been codified, and labeled. I haven't read Crowley, Carroll, or the like but through reading Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Some small bits I have gathered from other sources, but I never seemed to finish the books. High ceremony seemed like a waste of time, and I never had the space anyways. The sigils shown were more than I ever went through, I used simple one word focus, either in a circle, or out. Finding the point of affectation (in the meditation)is like pushing a boat in to a lake, or ocean, and expecting to reach a destination. It works on occasion. Active, and passive practice are key. Once gnosis has been found, even if just a little, then the untrodden path opens before you.

Excellent job, lovely Angela! I read Peter Carroll in the 90's sometime. I find his methods to be a little wonky at times but usually extremely effective. It takes discipline to be an effective magician and I think once that is understood then any system that applies to ones proclivity is going to be affective.

I love this explanation! Of not having intrinsic ontological nature! I'd often thought of it as being a catalyst of sorts that only activates when blended or alchemized with purpose and actually explosive outward rather than inward in itself! Very cool!! More impactful in its tools and methods and applications and reasoning versus innate philosophy or innate searching for meaning! That's where it's strongest, I think. As a powerful tool. Otherwise it nudges into a kind of philosophical nihilism perhaps, which may not be helpful for some in drawing conclusions about meaning of life and even reality itself?

Love the channel, thank you for your offering. After watching the last few videos covering the practical divergence of the left from a right, I felt compelled to emphasize that, with such potential, whether bound by canon or within ritualistic methodology, or the unbound, all magick exists as we know it, philosophically and practically, remains singular in the aspect that it is the alpha AND the omega, drawing from and returning to everything. Even when attempting to subvert anything in favor for another, everything remains to serve us BECAUSE we are aware that if we don't encourage the servitude of everything, there would be nothing. Everything affects personal ethos and personal ethos affect everything but it is still an affectation so, while some of us practice from the inside outward and others from the outside inward, this is NOT what is being portrayed as the benevolent versus the malevolent, BOTH are on the path you take, the left AND the right. Angela, I have noticed there are several similarities in some of the practices and ideals of Chaos magic to Daoist practices. Although the core of pretty much all energy and intent practices are stillness, observation, and breath control. Chaos magic seems more comparable to Daoist practices than those of an Indian yogic approach. I was wondering if you have done any research with Daoist Magic, talismans, meditation, and energy practices? It is a very deep rabbit hole to go down of different areas practices.

Sutcliffe's paper is _great_ if you can get a copy of that Paganism Today compilation cheap. I could not find it free accessible on the internet. This and the philosophy one, are a pretty good Chaos magick intro 1.01. Speaking from experience tho, people need to be damn sure their thinkings clear and straight, their hearts committed to the unknowable outcome, and their will (which is manifested thru the sigal) is clear and unambiguous.
In the early days of experiments with C... M... some will use terms like *abundance* as an outcome. Big mistake 1.01. The ALL ie the mental construction we call reality, does not differentiate between between black and white, thus can deliver what we could experience as disastrous. Then again, it could be your secrets hearts desire, -which again, is not always a good thing, especially if, say addiction prone, or such.

I followed Aleister Crowley so much, that at some point my view of spirituality became what you explain in your video about the philosophical features of Chaos Magick, but everything else about the system bores me to death
