      I believe it does as the voltage drops out of the capacitors.

    im learning, and trying to buy a belt grinder in my price range. im looking at frames with and without motors, vfd's, ect., and may end up buying these components in stages. i want variable speed. thats for sure. i dont know that much about electrical. so, neither the KB 24D or 27D will run a single phase motor? i was getting the impression from another guy that with 115vac from the wall to a single phase motor, i could just get a dimmer switch from home depot to control the speed. ive since found a deticated "vari-speed" switch online, like a dimmer switch but with heat-sinking fins. but would the dimmer switch not be as smooth of power delivery? be jumpy?
    i dont need fancy but i do want a smooth belt speed. id like 2 horsepower as well and about 3500 rpm max. energy effenciy isnt a priority. suggestions?

      I'm unfamiliar with the dimmer switch method but it sounds like it would work might be worth a shot or you can buy once cry once. You going to make the decision brother.

      Back in the day they would use DC motors to vary the speed check eBay maybe

      @@wildcatwilly yep! im learning all about that now.. permanant magnet PM motors. DC motors. youre right. lots of rotary switches in the market for DC motors. some start with AC from the wall and switch to DC for the motors. im getting the impression DC motors might have a lot more torque. anyway, DC or PM motors are big and heavy. with the tilting 2x72 frames im looking at theyd be to big at 1.5 or 2 hp.

    Will this work on a 2hp general purpose single phase motor?

    • @wildcatwilly
      @wildcatwilly  4 місяці тому +1

      No the motor has to be three phase to manipulate the speed.

    Will that run a 110 motor?

    • @wildcatwilly
      @wildcatwilly  5 місяців тому +1

      The vfd can run off of 110 volt. To manipulate the speed you have to have a three-phase motor.

      @wildcatwilly Thank you for the response. We have a 110 motor that can be converted to 220, but that would still be a single phase right? Still no good.

      As far as I understand it you can remove the capacitor from a single phase motor and convert it to a three-phase motor and use a vfd to power at and manipulate the speed.

    Any idea why the breaker trips when i connect my ground from the 3ph motor to the vfd but runs fine when i disconnect the ground?

    • @cablemanagement1524
      @cablemanagement1524 Рік тому +2

      is it a gfci breaker? a vfd output is pulsed, and the pulses induce high-frequency currents in the frame of the motor that then travel through the ground, and gfci outlets/breakers don't like that. they detect the currents and shut everything down. i wouldn't know how to help if it's just a normal breaker but i definitely have experienced immediate shutdowns when i have connected vfds to gfci outlets in the past.

    • @cablemanagement1524
      @cablemanagement1524 Рік тому +2

      these currents can also come out in the shaft and shock you, if the motor is very small

    • @S30Build
      @S30Build Рік тому

      @cablemanagement1524 Yes, i have an af/gf breaker on my garage circuit. i ended up changing the switching frequency of the kbac-24d by moving jumper j12 from 8k to the g2 sensitive jumper position for gfci. That fixed the breaker tripping, but the motor makes more of a higher pitched sound when running...

    • @cablemanagement1524
      @cablemanagement1524 Рік тому

      that's interesting, i didn't know you could change the carrier frequency on these drives. and yeah, the carrier frequency noise is part of the the trade-off. glad it fixed the tripping, though.
      i personally haven't worked with these KB units, although they look extremely solid. i use a Fuji Electric unit, which has an interesting feature that allows you to scramble the carrier frequency to make it sound more like white noise. the drawback is that the Fuji units are NOT nema 4 rated and they DO require programming and tuning. although a nema 1 conduit envlosure box can be purchased and installed.
