Mary Ford - Dominique - English Version - 1964

- Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
At a time when Johnny Lackland
over England was the king
Dominique was in the backland
fighting sin like anything
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Now a heretic one day
among the thorns forced him to crawl
Dominique with just one prayer
made him hear the good Lord's call
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Without horse or fancy wagon
he crossed Europe up and down
Poverty was his companion
as he walked from town to town
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
One day in the budding Order
there was nothing left to eat
Suddenly two angels walked in
with a load of bread and meat
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Grant us now oh Dominique
the grace of love and simple mirth
That we all may help to quicken
godly life and truth on earth
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
IM VERY PROUD OF MYSELF BECAUSE I MEMORIZED THE FRENCH VERSION AND I KNOW NO FRECH😂✌🏼️
lol
+Cassidy Pagano now memorise how to Spell FRENCH :-)
+Cassidy Pagano GOOD FOR YOU THAT IS NEAT MY GRAND DAUGHTER WANTS TO LEARN THE FRENCH VERSION
Wow that is cool I like that My 14 year old gran daughter is learning the French version also
+Punksthetic the same in english
I just love Dominique both versions!
What a wholesome song. He never complained, traveled alone and endured hunger pangs. Yet he still managed to witness to people. This encourages me to be more bold about my faith and to be grateful with what I already have.
We should all try to be like Dominic
A shame so many heretics and Albigensians had to suffer to provide the backstory to this tuneful little ditty.
LMAO
@@liammurphy2725 "A shame"? Bro, they literally formed armies, attacked cities, killed people and destroyed farms, all so they could try to destroy matter, since they thought the material word was "evil" and created by the "bad God" who imprisoned the other God in the matter.
Remember that Jesus said that we are all priests if you find yourself making others aware of the gospel then you're a priest , it's just about the only thing I think about anymore. JESUS ✝️❤️
Best season of AHS brought me here.

Coven was the best in my opinion

I used to sing this as a kid in Zambia over 50 years ago. Suddenly I started remembering the lyrics and now I’m googling it!
Many years ago, I remembered hearing this song (or the original version) being played at the fourth of July fair in my home town.
I am very happy to discover the english version of this beautiful song. Thanks a lot Mary Ford. Jean K.
By far the best version i like debbie reynolds and the other versions but im ab ausie and mary dose the best english version sydney aus 10)12/2022

Sorry but I think it was amended I believe this is the direct English translation ua-cam.com/video/6g_G5U4Ze9Y/v-deo.html
They modified the translation so it would. That’s often done when music is translated to another language…
It's better in french...
.-.
It is better in French indead. Maybe if another woman song the song in English it sounds a bit better. At least nowe i nowe what the song is about
+kelsey backus I actually clicked the video because I thought it would sound terrible in English, and wanted to see how bad. Translating most songs from one language to another usually causes the song to not rhyme anymore, but this one actually still has a decent flow, though I'm sure they probably changed some words around. Is totally better in French though. Also, I think the Dominique the song is referring to is Saint Dominic, the guy who founded the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church, and may have been one of the main people involved with the Spanish Inquisition.
+Krus Kruse There is also a Czech version - I can understand even better :-)))
+Herman Bogaers. It's about 3 minutes (lol).
+kelsey backus. The arrangement and performance are just as good in English.
I wonder how AHS finds this music😂
I think it’s bc the person that sung this was a nun, or something. And it talks about the lord, in the season that they used this song in, (asylum) had nuns.
@@rusty_stars yeah but it's still a little difficult to find the songs, I didn't even know these were in ahs

In the French version there is mention of Dominic fighting the Albigensians. I hope he wasn't fighting them militarily. If so, he was part of one of the great genocides of the Middle Ages.
I remember my grandma singing ""Dominique nique nique" when I was very little. She sang in Portuguese and I doubt the lyrics were the same, because she was always saying he was my prince coming for me
No, because Dominique is The Lord !
In the Portuguese version the entire song talks about someone waiting for their ‘eternal boyfriend’ and Prince Charming, only for their life to pass by them, spent waiting, and for them to be sad. So uh, maybe go find your príncipe encantado instead of waiting
Thats a beautiful comment about your granmother. The sad, sarcastic comments? Well, they do not hear the true message as they haven't ears!!! that hear.🌹

I live in Lyon France, but I was born in England, and I asked my friend why she was singing about the Lord, and some guy named Dominoqe
Always have sung pieces of this song… no idea where I learned it, maybe CCD classes. Listening to it makes me happy! So glad I thought to look it up… the wonders of the internet!
OK so atheist are not evil, as one, I love this song! I will teach this, happy tune song, to my babies, and will show them the animated version of "The Prince of Egypt" with a couple, awesome "Bible Stories" that I feel they should know. If they choose to be Christian or Catholic or Buddhist or nonaggressive Muslim, then I will be there for them and support them in their beliefs. Even if I hate the death of religion. BTW stop the hate on Jews! They are one of the first religions and they deserve respect from all of us. I am a Christian born and an atheist at heart, and will forever protect, share and love the Jewish people for their natural wisdom. At least give thanks to good morals and good raisings! May all be happy and content!
You are the first athiest whom I have ever come in contact with that was not hostile towards Christians or Christianity. Good on you. ✌ Now while you may not believe in God, He still believes in you. So, God bless, friend. 😉 😊
Me too born an raised a Methodist but a polytheist at heart. I acknowledge all the gods but I never worship any. If you believe your god is real, then it's real.

Thank you very much, it has been about 50 years I have loved this song, not knowing the words. I was so sorry when it was taken off the air back then, I understand the lack of reverence for the Lord when they were dancing to this tune. Today I wrote down the words, the words are as great as the music. I have had that tune in my head for several days, so I check it out and here are the words - again - thank you very much. I am James Elmer :-)
Oh, dear circumstance! I think I like Christian music.
it's not scary a man tells people about God and fights sin and don't want to be rewarded
Many thanks, a fantastic translation of the famous song in French from way back
and sung too by a lovely singer by the name of Mary Forde.
Its odd that it scares some people, its not the usual childrens rymes that people are used to maybe ie pop songs...thanks again for posting
I think I gives some ppl the creeps because it was played repeatedly on the TV show, American Horror Story Asylum.
I never watched American Horror Story. I remember this song in French by the Singing Nun in late 1963 and was a huge hit through early 1964, For some reason either I forgot, but most likely this English version wasn't played very much on the radio, only less than a year after the original release.
The Singing Nun's version went to unmber one in the United States in late 1963. It stayed at number, on the Billboard rock charts, for an entire month!
After AHS asylum it keeps playing on my head and im not yet over this thing
Dominique's good works served as their own reward.
Köszönöm, hogy feltöltötted! Egy gyerekkori élmény kapcsolódik ehhez a dalhoz! A középső bátyám miközben a metélt tésztát ette, ennek a dalnak ritmusára szedte fel a tésztát a villára, és közben az első sorát énekelte. Ettől nagyanyánk mindíg mérgesd lett, a mai napig sem tudjuk miért? De még a délutáni iskolába menet, a bátyám még az ablakból beénekelte az első sort! Ez körülbelül 1966-1967-ben történt.
Wow ! Love it ! The late great Mary Ford was a wonderfully gifted performer ! And she was the ex-wife of guitar legend Les Paul. The two of them produced some immortal music ! THANKS for sharing this with us !! :-)
I agree 100% but It still makes you think what she might have done had she not met Les Paul. Her talent was over shadowed by her legendary husband.
Thank you! I knew there was spirit in the guitar playing in this version of Dominique.... I love it❤
I went to a Dominican primary school. The nuns taught us the English version.
Still better than 1D songs!
Hilarious :/
one direction actually makes good music ...

Everyone's here because of AHS..........the lyrics match the season tho
1964. Folk songs were big back then, and I guess they decided to make it folky when they translated it. Still makes me roll my eyes. The French version is definitely more the real deal.
Hmmm. I didn’t know what this was saying. I don’t know if they put it in AHS Asylum because they’re saying Dominque is crazy or because this series does have a lot of context in Biblical principals which are skillfully, and soundly exegeted. For instance when sister Mary Eunice talks about wrestling not with flesh and blood but principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12. The placing of that scripture, particularly out of the mouth of the Devil was fantastic. Not only because she was playing two characters but she was telling you from her pure side, no doubt, what was happening to her. But also the “madness” in the other patients, the doctors and religious characters in the story. They were all, all the same. Whoever wrote that or obtained help for writing that HAD or HAS to have some in-depth knowledge of the Bible. This song played over and over to torment the patients also hearing the words, they, like Sister Mary Eunice are pure. However, forcing someone, even to love God is corrupt, as in the way they used this song. It is brilliant. I love AHS, especially Asylum and Hotel. As a Christian, to me it is a look into the three temptations of mankind. Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Coven, in my book represents the pride of life. “I can use my power to get whatever I want!” Hotel in my opinion represents “lust of the flesh,” particularly with the “addiction demon” and Asylum, lust of the eyes. Lana Winters destroyed everything she once loved so she could get a top position that she saw herself or others in. “And when she saw that it was good, she ate.” Genesis 3:6. Sr. Jude., Dr. Ardin, as well as the Monseigneur all did the same thing. Brilliant, just brilliant. Perhaps the theme of it all is the story of Dominque.
i too remember hearing it as a kid and even to this day i sing along so gayley moving my hands and feet
thanks for all older post comment i didnt find the horror part or odd from this song or maybe i should plot it all and scrap all this post into somthing chart i guesss
the original was sung by two nuns who found out they were in love with eachother. they both killed themselves together because they 1) wanted to stop being a nun 2) if they didnt, the church wouldve killed them
Never heard this WASP version before. The Lyrics kind of keep the feeling and spirit of the original (not very Americans would know who the Albigeois were or the Albigensian Crusade). Cute and quaint.

What was it like in the 60s?
@@valance10 Much better than it is today, that's for sure. Life was simple and easy, people were polite. Crime rate was low, as well as racism and other problems. Gas was cheap. Cars were beautiful. Everybody was moral and God-fearing and went to church. And I am only getting started...
@@foureyedchick Hopefully we can return to such times.
After all these years, this dear, sweet song that I heard sung in French in the mid- to late 1960s by "The Singing Nun," is so delightful and heartwarming sung in English with wonderful words! Thank you so much for posting it!

Who is here because of Jeenie.Weenie
I'm here after this tune popped into my head. Heard it in French class when I was 10 or 12. Never knew what it was about. Just a catchy tune. Found it by googling "Dominique-nique-nique" remembering the French spelling. Read the lyrics first in French, then read the English translation. Then listened to the French singing nuns version. Wow, what a blast from the distant past. Must've been 1965 or thereabouts.
Sure beats the poison being pounded into the heads of subsequent generations. There is nothing so good that man can't corrupt, and nothing so evil that can't be turned to a Godly purpose.
Don't watch AHS. Too dark.
I imagine that's Les Paul on piano. I know my instruments!
I actually find the song very dainty and beautiful💓 not scary or creepy at all, I don't get it why some y'all find this creepy in a way.
The real question is who is here NOT because of AHS?
Me
This is so f-ing creepy
Wow! Is this the same Mary Ford who played along with Les Paul? Beautiful!!!!
MARY FORD RIP 1977....
my oldest sis had this record in the original french pressing. lovely to hear it in english.
Iqqiqqi, this is great, you did a wonderful job. Mary Ford is also awesome.
It is depressing to hear from so many people that are ignorant.
Firstly, I am a Christian, and the translation doesn't really matter. As some have said, the message is the same. Of course, it would be nice to translate cleanly, but if this were possible, why would we speak in different languages in the first place? For those who don't understand this, get over it.
Secondly, for those who don't get the message, or who criticize the message, get over it. This is not so much a religious message as it is a moral one. The point is that humble people who do their thing (work their job, live their life) right, and who don't ask for anything in return, will be rewarded for it later. It makes no difference where the reward comes from, or who it come from. Unfortunately, if you don't believe this, it's probably why you don't have anything of value in this world.
Thirdly, people should stop complaining about people not making any sense when they themselves a) don't make any sense, and b) can't spell or use proper grammar. Nothing is more annoying than a hypocrite.
The fact that the two nuns singing this were lesbians, and they killed theirselves right after this.
They killed themselves toghether

It has been 50+ years, and in all those years I've wondered what that song sounds like in English! I suspected that it had a religious theme to it.
Why do they play this in AHS2 ? I don’t get why
I was 7 years old when this song first came out in the U.S., I also had the original vinyl album. When the album was released on cd some 35 years later I bought that. The album and the cd contain the French and English lyrics, I looked at the cd lyrics (need special glasses to be able to see it), and the English lyrics were identical to the Mary Ford version except she substituted 'looking' with 'asking' and she omitted 2 of 7 verses.
At least they tried I don't see any of you making a youtube channel and singing
