Its not an opinion, Elton John is OBJECTIVELY the best piano player there is in the pop/rock world. There's no happenstance in his playing, every single he touches has a place in the musical idea, . He plays so many notes and such complex with both hands and embellishes where neccessary but not too much. Its just always perfection at every performance.
Piano player all my life, and Elton is the bomb, as are a few others, Billy Joel's incredible. that guy that played keys for The Who, etc. It's hard to have a "best" among so much talent.
I caught him doing this song during his first US tour in 1970. It was three pieces with him on piano, Dee Murray on bass, and Nigel Olson on drums. He lit a fire under my ass that burns still today. I just HAD to become a player which led me to also be a composer, singer, audio engineer, producer and (oddly) a physicist because of that young, highly energetic man. He may sound somewhat different today, but he's still the best pure rock/blues pianist there is...
Have seen him a few times since I was 15 ,am 50 now and it's just magic to see him live isn't it.Try to play a bit myself,so really appreciate his talent.
omg LUCKY. that is amazing. i saw him a few fridays ago in philadelphia and he played an opening like this for the same song and he sounded so damn good on the piano still as a 72 year old.. but still so jealous of you, man!
I’m only 15 and despite never seeing him live, I saw a tribute concert in early 2020. This is an amazing song and the energy boost I get from hearing this song and singing it super loud makes it my favorite song of his
I saw this concert he was playing with Leon Russell I believe at the beacon theater he is a great performer this is one of my favorite songs by Elton John take me to the pilot.
And yet it's tame, relative to some of his other live takes on this same number. Take the "Greek Theater" clip, for example. Not for nothing is he the highest earning musician of all time.
He has a great technique of playing the left hand part a full octave below the lowest notes of the right hand part. It gives extra punch to the bass line.
If you feel that it's real I'm on trial And I'm here in your prison Like a coin in your mint I am dented and I'm spent with high treason Through a glass eye your throne Is the one danger zone Take me to the pilot for control Take me to the pilot of your soul Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na Well I know he's not old And I'm told, and I'm told he's a virgin For he may be she What I'm told and I'm never, never for certain Through a glass eye your throne Is the one danger zone Take me to the pilot for control Take me to the pilot of your soul Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na Through a glass eye your throne Is the one danger zone Take me to the pilot for control Take me to the pilot of your soul Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Take me to the pilot Lead me through the chamber Take me to the pilot I am but a stranger Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na, na na na Na na na na na na na na (Na na na, na na na) (Na na na na na na na na) (Na na na) take me, (na na na) take me (Na na na na na na na na) ooh, oh (Na na na) take me, (na na na) take me (Na na na na na na na na) yeah, yeah (Na na na) take me, (na na na) take me (Na na na na na na na na) (Na na na, na na na) (Na na na na na na na na)
I'm not a musician so I wouldn't know; is he pretty much making this up as he goes along? I understand that it is passages of songs pieced together like a medley or an overture. But I have a hunch that he is stringing them together extemporaneously, an improvising the segues outright. Can a musician educate me on this?

Charly Garcia is the best
And what about billy joel
Agree
It’s hard for me to decide it’s kind of a toss up between him an billy Joel

I watch this 10 times a day
i may have to. just discovered this version. GAH!

I envy you a lot, his sound and energy in 1970 was amazing!
omg LUCKY. that is amazing. i saw him a few fridays ago in philadelphia and he played an opening like this for the same song and he sounded so damn good on the piano still as a 72 year old.. but still so jealous of you, man!
The voice change is a combination of age, and a surgery done on his throat. He lost his falsetto range because of that and it sounds deeper.

Take me to the church, this is great gospel music!
And that my friends is why this great man is the most gifted pianist in rock history evah!
When he finally comes in with “Oh yeah” I stand up every time. And I have seen this video more than 200 times. Not exaggerating.
Back again
His voice sounds so good here. And his piano playing is crazy! All the fills as he sings! I don't know how he does it.
One of the most amazing artists, so lucky we got to be entertained by him
Outstanding!!! His piano playing has gotten better and better!
I saw this concert he was playing with Leon Russell I believe at the beacon theater he is a great performer this is one of my favorite songs by Elton John take me to the pilot.
It doesn't get any better than this. . .
This should be put in time capsule
Those close voicings are amazing!
holy shitttttt this. is. everything.
Thats the way a Yamaha grand Piano should be played. Fabulous performance from Sir Elton.
First of all, thank you for letting me hear that! Unbelievable the Sir!
Did he have voice problems that evening, he sounds a bit pressed?!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
3:59 The right hand going nuts.
And yet it's tame, relative to some of his other live takes on this same number.
Take the "Greek Theater" clip, for example.
Not for nothing is he the highest earning musician of all time.
Check out video of "Take me..." at the Greek Theater from maybe 15 years ago. I think he made Ray Cooper even cry. (Kidding.. maybe)
Unbelievable!
omg. you are right, that was INSANE.
Indeed. He was on fire throughout.
This is more thoughtful and reflective,
both are superb, matchless.
Wow! Belted that one out!
I need an Elton John concert!
This better than the performance at the Greek theatre in 1994
Elton John 😍
Maravilhoso!!🤩
😎💚💛
He has a great technique of playing the left hand part a full octave below the lowest notes of the right hand part. It gives extra punch to the bass line.
Elton on piano equals JImi on guitar
It's really good!)) Where was this concert? I want listen full concert)
A+++
If you feel that it's real I'm on trial
And I'm here in your prison
Like a coin in your mint
I am dented and I'm spent with high treason
Through a glass eye your throne
Is the one danger zone
Take me to the pilot for control
Take me to the pilot of your soul
Take me to the pilot
Lead me through the chamber
Take me to the pilot
I am but a stranger

Lead me through the chamber
Take me to the pilot
I am but a stranger
Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Well I know he's not old
And I'm told, and I'm told he's a virgin
For he may be she
What I'm told and I'm never, never for certain
Through a glass eye your throne
Is the one danger zone
Take me to the pilot for control
Take me to the pilot of your soul
Take me to the pilot
Lead me through the chamber
Take me to the pilot
I am but a stranger
Take me to the pilot
Lead me through the chamber
Take me to the pilot
I am but a stranger
Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na

Take me to the pilot of your soul
Take me to the pilot

Take me to the pilot
Lead me through the chamber
Take me to the pilot

Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na
Na na na na na na na na

If you think this is the best, see him at the Greek Theater in 1994 with Ray Cooper. You may have to re-title this video

Basically it’s a mix of riffs he’s created over the years, but yes, the rhythm, voicings and timings are all made up on the spot
Listen to his other live clips of this same song. The Greek Theatre one is a good start. All are entirely, almost unrecognisably _sui generis_
