Practice Painting Loose Carrot People
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week's BobBlast is all about how I surprise myself by loosely painting figures into my paintings. This is what I do to overcome any anxiety and excitement anticipating painting figures. Whether they are painted singularly or in a crowded landscape, there’s a story to tell when you paint these figures.
When I'm painting the illusion of the human form - I think "Carrot." A dot for the head and then brushing in an abstract carrot/figure shape underneath the dot. I practice the shapes over and over with only black acrylic paint and a big mop-style brush. Don’t forget to anchor your figure with a shadow!
While I am painting these carrots, I think about movement, motion, action… What are these goofy figures doing? Dancing, Stretching, Running, Fencing - the list is endless! Adding the illusion of action gives you and your viewer something fun to look at.
The other technique I like using when painting the illusion of a figure is what I call the “Rembrandt-style” lighting. Watch the video for this demonstration.
This short BobBlast was focused on creating the illusion of figures, starting off in black and white. What do you do next, after black and white? Add color!

I like the carrot people. Looks like they would be fun in watercolor or pen and ink.
They are! There is a BobBlast I did using "action" figures with inks.
That’s good. All I have is watercolors and I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to get it to work
