When the Equus was first came out, it was a symbol of a successful life in Korea. Most of people dreamed about sitting in the back seat of black Hyundai Equus with being chauffered at that time. Hyundai has had an excellent reputation in the US since the ' turn of the century'... and even more so with THE SEVERAL re-designs of both their ' Sonata' line & the 'Elantra' line and that was just the beginning of what is sure to be a product line 2nd to none....
That pulling the middle of the front seat gotta be the WEIRDEST QUIRK OF ALL TIME. I think whoever designed that could be a thief when he was a teen, then became a lawyer and eventually became a car designer.
I was working Seoul at the time and the company I was working for allocated me one of these along with a driver. If you've ever tried to drive in Seoul you understand why you have to have a driver. I'm English and I could never get anywhere because I was trained with, oh what was it? Oh yes, traffic rules. Foreigners were a lot better off in the backs of cars and because of what I was doing on behalf of a major animation studio they gave me one of these. And yes, my driver made sure to have my seat warm when he brought the car around. I never cared about performance, I cared about that passenger seat cutout which I used every day being driven to and from my office. Was I embarrassed about being luxuriously chauffeured around in a foreign country? Absolutely, but at the urging of my Korean colleagues, I got used to it. It is a car designed for a specific application, and that is to move the upper echelons of society (and a filthy foreigner who conned his way into a plum assignment) from point A to point B with the minimum of interaction with the world outside. Unless you were an important person or you have visited around the 90's(when there were I guess you got more than enough. Wish I could show you the situation I am in right now... (in a metro during rush hour)
I lived in Seoul back then as well. I drove a 1991 Kia Capital and never had any problems getting around. They probably gave you a chauffeured car because you're English and would have caused an accident if you drove yourself.

Isn't it kind of ironic that the Mitsubishi version failed in Japan, then became a badge engineered Nissan Cima/InifintiQ70 before flopping for good, while Equus ended up evolving to Genesis G90? I wish Mitsubishi would bring their A game back!
@@redbullrobertSame goes to the Mitsubishi Debonair. Mitsubishi axed the Debonair in 1999 in favor for the Proudia (Equus in Korea), while its Korean sibling, Hyundai Grandeur pressed on forward till this day. (XG in certain markets followed by the Azera in the US market) Bonus fact: Aside from the Hyundai Equus, the Grandeur is also a status car in the Korean society.
SFLD obviously stands for "Seinfeld," and you can choose the venue it sounds like he's performing in. Push the button, car goes "What's the deal with airline peanuts!"
That's because the LS400 was such a great choice for them to be "inspired" by. The Koreans were great borrowers of Japanese designs, until they snagged some of the best European car designers and created their own great looks.
Bro this looks like car model #6 from GTA 3 while playing on an iPhone. To each their own, but to say this generic thing is “elegant” is a stretch. Simple, sure. Beautiful? If I squint.
That's the one. We had several home sound systems in those days and each one had "sound field" and EQ options titled "hall", "rock", "jazz", "club", "stadium", "classical", etc. It's just a name for different EQ settings. They were just silly I remember and I don't mind at all that they're gone.
The untold morale of this video is: Hyundai has been relentlessly trying for decades to have a foot hold in almost every car category and that is why it has become what it is today. Whether you like its cars or not, it definitely deserves your respect.
S.FLD is likely short for Sound Field, based off what it does. Right rear seat heater button up front would be for preheating the seat before you arrive to pick up your boss I would assume
I’m Korean and this video made my day but there’s something different what you said 1. There is 3.5 V6 and 4.5 V8 model ----------------------- (He did mentioned that! my mistake XD) ----------------------- 2. The sunroof is optional. I think that model you reviewed is the cheapest trim of all 3. Horn is not the original parts. the original one sounds better than this horn the reason the car is front wheel drive, they didn’t had any technology to make rwd cars. many cars in korea is fwd. most recent version of this car is Genesis G90 I hope you review that car! (added) - more information in the comments!
I think -- and correct me if I'm wrong -- but I *THINK* Korea did have the technology to manufacture rear-wheel drive cars in 2002. I think they just didn't use it.
It looks like a hodge podge of 5-6 different cars to me. It has crown Vic taillights. Volvo body lines on the rear fenders. Cadillac STS headlights grill and dashboard top, the front side on looks like an old Acura rl, The window lines look Lexus LS,

thmsodonoghue reverb adds a lot of depth and sonic quality. A small amount of tasteful reverb can really add to a surround sound playback. The different types of reverb (Hall, stadium, plate, etc.) all have different qualities and colors that can be tailored to the listener or the musician’s taste. The effect isn’t as dramatic as you think it is.
Don't you think the musician would account for their desired amount reverb in the final mix of the song? There is no way in hell a car stereo can match the sound system in a club or arena so why even pretend to try?
thmsodonoghue Yes! They do! Countless hours go into mixing and mastering a song a certain way. Personally, I hate overlaying reverb and effects on a playback device but some people like it. To each their own.
My friends dad had one of these in Europe, but it was called Hyundai Centennial, the year was 2000-2001. Felt like a king when he drove us, that nostalgia :)
That plastic hook on the spare tire compartment isn't just for opening it. It is designed to hook on the trunk opening to hold the lid open while changing the tire. My 2006 Azera (Grandeur) had the same feature.
that rear seat heat button is actually genius because you can preheat the seat before picking up your "Korean executive." The hook in the trunk spare tire cover is also to hook the cover to the edge of the trunk to hold it open while you pull out the tire change equipment too. My Chrysler has that.
I own the only 1st gen Centennial/Equus in Norway, and 1 of 37 in Europe. 35 of them came with the world soccer championship in 2006, and they are V8 cars. Mine is a V6. Lovely to drive, but maintenance intensive vehicles.
@WhiteBoard Finance - what are the qualifications to rent from Turo? Are they like Enterprise or Hertz? And what’s your experience with the car owners? Essentially, I’m asking what is the proper etiquette when renting on Turo?
They hooked him up, but also he doesnt want to upload all the content from there at once and also possibly shot alot of content and he had to edit all and didnt want to miss extra opportunity back in america?
This car is a result of joint development of Hyundai and Mitsubishi, So this car is not only for Korea but also for Japan market. Mitsubishi had no Luxury line up and neither did hyundai. But, from 2nd generation EQUUS is unrelated to Mishubishi.
In Germany these Hyundais were known as the Centennial, they were only offered in 2006 and most of its owners were higher employees/bosses of Hyundai in Europe. Only 35 cars were offered here in Germany Lucky me I spotted one of these Hyundais right next to my former workplace last year 😦😳
Hall, stadium, church, are standart DSP, it's a standart in audio for reverb, there are some more like big hall , studio, bathroom etc.... Seems like you never entered any hifi/radio menú as tons of them have that options (anyways they sound like shit)
He also should to get it out on the road and see how it drives, and for more of his thoughts about the marriage experience go to autotradr.com/oversteer
Funny you say that. My cousin had a Mazda back in the 90s that he bought getting out of the marine corps. And I remember he had air vents that would move back and forth. And then he got a daewoo right after and the car had literally the same style air vents and among other things. And it almost resembled the Mazda.
Hyundai has had a lengthy relationship with Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi Prisis was a rebadged Hyundai. Early Optima’s and Sonata’s looked like Mitsubishi galants. Hyundai wanted nothing more then to emulate Mitsubishi’s success. Today Hyundai and Kia enjoy a dominant position in the USA and Mitsubishi has faded into obscurity.
Hyundai just bought old Mitsubishi production lines when they started out diversifying into car-making when the government said to do that. That's where the relationship comes from. Just like Samsung's with Nissan and Daewoo's with GM and Ssangyong's with Mercedes. Well, i guess they are all a little different in the details.
Mitsubishi wasn't that good from the first place as they just came out of the blue seeking and hoping that one day they'll sit on a pile of money and just live the rich life but that will never worked or will work for them b'cuz they never listened to the customer /consumer and just made basic cars with no main features plus they came out with cars that are almost the same with one or to differences which are changing the interior of the car, the width or the cargo space. In addition to all that they didn't focus on there car production and started making pencils and correctors (white outs) for pens and the're latest version of the lancer evolution which was made in 2015/2016 which was primarily titled as a sports sedan had no screen no automatic cargo door no heated seats and the black plastic piece that goes around fell off and the ac took 15mins to work in conclusion automakers like kia, doge, jeep, fait,Nissan,Lexus, GMC,Lincoln,Cadillac and much much much more that I can sit here all day and night naming automakers that are enjoying their lives
You mentioned it was co-developed with Mitsubishi, and I'm intrigued that you say that because the rear-end tail lights look EXACTLY like the same year model Mitsubishi diamante (just with orange colored bottom lenses instead of clear). I noticed that right off the bat! It's as if they couldn't be bothered to make their own tail lights and just said, "meh, we'll use the ones off the diamante."
Fun fact: The new Genesis flagship is G90, which is a spiritual successor of the Equus. In Korea the name Equus means a lot to many people, so the G90 in Korea are named EQ900 to pay homage to the Equus name.
ch dn I always figured that Hyundai changed the name from Equus to G90 in the US to compete with the identifier of the Infinity. Kind of like Mercedes changing there car identifier to match what BMW was doing. I also thought maybe the name Equus didn’t resonate well here in the US so they changed it for sales and likeness. Either way I remember when I first say one down in south Florida visiting my parents. It’s a super rich area and people were driving them all over so I finally asked an older gentleman and when he told me it was a Hyundai I almost died laughing but out of respect I held my composer till later that evening when I got home and did some research and I was shocked.
The hall, stadium, club, and so forth "sounds' are not odd. Pioneer Car Audio released digital sound processing on their high-end Premier series units, back in the 90's. It changes the acoustics of the sound, via Fourier analysis (mathematical manipulation of waves which is what music is), that makes it, for instance, sound like you're in a stadium. It usually takes a dedicated sound processor to do this especially if the music is dealing with lossless music files like wav.files or AAC.files. You also see this type of digital sound processing on DJ mixers and high-end music/home theater systems. Doug, yes, if it's a high end digital processor it well make the sound like the chosen environment. In stadium, the music has an enormous echo, where the bass is decreased, with some reverb. This echoing, reverb in bass, delay, and so forth are specific to certain frequencies. Overall, it will sound like the chosen acoustical environment.
I forgot they weren't EQ but actual DSP effects. We had a 5.1 Home Theatre in those days and it had tonnes of settings for echo and reverb, they were goofy but my favourite was just leaving the sound dry and upfront.
My grandma had a 2000 Mercedes S500 W220 with the Bose Audiopiolot feature that did the same thing. You could choose from 3 spacial areas that would dictate what the car would sound like. Ie small, medium, and large room. Worked well and drastically changed the sound.
Come on now Doug. The Driver "heated rear seat" button is for when the driver comes to pick up Mr. Businessman from the airport, making sure the rear seat is already warm when he gets inside.
"S. FLD" "Sound Field". It's what they call the different pre-set EQs (Hall, Church, Stadium, Club). The difference is basically the amount of echo depth in the music.
In the 90s this kind of preset was very popular on several HiFi equipment ... But apparently Dough is only interested in cars and never check home audio equipment while visiting friends :-D
I appreciate the fact that Doug has traveled abroad. The EQUUS's lineage started in 1999. The front hood emblem ornament is of the horse, Pegasus. Bonus fact: Aside from the Hyundai Equus, the Grandeur is also a status car in the Korean society.

Hey thats pretty good

So fucking lame dude
sound field. it's reverb settings
😂😂😂
The stereo "hall" "stadium" "church" thing refers to reverb types. It essentially adds echo to mimic the location chosen
and S. FLD = Sound Field.
SFLD obviously stands for "Seinfeld," and you can choose the venue it sounds like he's performing in.

I actually love the styling of this. So simple, elegant and beautiful.
Just like the Mercedes W126. They took the design from there also from the W140 and maybe the back is from somewhere else or maybe it's even theirs.
Looks like that mood button got alot of use. Lol

S.Fld. = Sound Field.
LMacNeill I was guessing sound frequency location dynamics, yours makes more sense
That's the one. We had several home sound systems in those days and each one had "sound field" and EQ options titled "hall", "rock", "jazz", "club", "stadium", "classical", etc. It's just a name for different EQ settings. They were just silly I remember and I don't mind at all that they're gone.
This guy audios.
LMacNeill , how did he nort know 🤪

quite embarrasing that the author did not know that....

The untold morale of this video is: Hyundai has been relentlessly trying for decades to have a foot hold in almost every car category and that is why it has become what it is today. Whether you like its cars or not, it definitely deserves your respect.
the rear light dome looks like it's been in a knife fight
S.FLD is likely short for Sound Field, based off what it does. Right rear seat heater button up front would be for preheating the seat before you arrive to pick up your boss I would assume
I’m Korean and this video made my day
but there’s something different what you said
1. There is 3.5 V6 and 4.5 V8 model

(He did mentioned that! my mistake XD)

2. The sunroof is optional. I think that model you reviewed is the cheapest trim of all
3. Horn is not the original parts. the original one sounds better than this horn
the reason the car is front wheel drive, they didn’t had any technology to make rwd cars. many cars in korea is fwd.
most recent version of this car is Genesis G90
I hope you review that car!
(added) - more information in the comments!
he did mention that there is 4.5L V8 option tho?
This car was way better than american car back in 2002.
korea8844 He did? oh I didn’t catch that Thanks!

Hall, church, stadium, and club are highly used reverb/EQ characteristics. Actually very common pro audio terms.
What this guy says, there actually is a huge difference between Hall and Church
why would you want the inside of your car to sound like a stadium?
thmsodonoghue reverb adds a lot of depth and sonic quality.

Hyundai makes cars just for fun, they're actually a biggest shipbuilder in the world.
Make Semi trailers too, oddly enough
They also weirdly produce hard drives and memory cards
They also make TVs, washing machines, mini ovens and many more electronics.
Yes, huge Korean companies that are partly owned/governed by the S. Korean government are into everything. Chebols, I believe they are called.
Hyundai is not owned by any govenment. and they don't make those white electronics since like 20 years ago
that rear seat heat button is actually genius because you can preheat the seat before picking up your "Korean executive." The hook in the trunk spare tire cover is also to hook the cover to the edge of the trunk to hold it open while you pull out the tire change equipment too.
Interesting, i have one here in sweden. A 2002 taken in to traffic 2004. 1 of 8 sold new in sweden. Are yours sold new i norway? /Thomas

Doug "I rented this car on Turo, it's kind of like an Airbnb for cars" DeMuro
I loved Turo when they were "Relay Rides". Lot of nice cars on there too.
@WhiteBoard Finance - what are the qualifications to rent from Turo? Are they like Enterprise or Hertz? And what’s your experience with the car owners? Essentially, I’m asking what is the proper etiquette when renting on Turo?
lmaooo😂😂😂
I'm in the UK and checked Turo for cars in my area, only thing available was a Ford Focus......
@Wet Lettuce - I’m in the United States. Saw a Tesla Model X along with several other very nice cars. Most rent from $400US per day to $800.

This car is a result of joint development of Hyundai and Mitsubishi, So this car is not only for Korea but also for Japan market. Mitsubishi had no Luxury line up and neither did hyundai. But, from 2nd generation EQUUS is unrelated to Mishubishi.
Japanese version is Praudia
Interesting
And Mitsubishi model wasn't popular, and looks pretty boring. I much more prefer it's predecessor, Debonair.
Doug the kind of guy who doesnt realize that SFLD on a stereo stands for soundfield
In Germany these Hyundais were known as the Centennial, they were only offered in 2006 and most of its owners were higher employees/bosses of Hyundai in Europe.
Only 35 cars were offered here in Germany
Lucky me I spotted one of these Hyundais right next to my former workplace last year 😦😳
The were called Centennial in Sweden too, sold only for two years (2002-2003)
these are going to shoot up in price after this video
Your mood is green, look at your shirt
Hall, stadium, church, are standart DSP, it's a standart in audio for reverb, there are some more like big hall , studio, bathroom etc.... Seems like you never entered any hifi/radio menú as tons of them have that options (anyways they sound like shit)
The control for the rear seat heat being upfront is so when the chauffeur is on his way to pick you up the seat will be warm.
That wood trim is absolutely awful.
AversaS not really lol
3rd World Garage looks like the Karelian Birch, but I'm not sure.
Yes it looks so ugly
I've seen wood like that in older Bentleys. I actually like the trim.

"Korea's *original* answer to the Lexus LS..." by making it look like the LS. Ahh love Koreans xD
SFLD stands for Stereo Field, and the settings are different reverberation effects.
Angie Whitlock or sound field depending on which car company you're dealing with
Doug, you should look into some of the Daewoo cars from the 90s, they made knockoffs of all kinds of cars.
jason starek like?
You do know that they were owned by GM at the time?
Funny you say that. My cousin had a Mazda back in the 90s that he bought getting out of the marine corps. And I remember he had air vents that would move back and forth. And then he got a daewoo right after and the car had literally the same style air vents and among other things. And it almost resembled the Mazda.
I have a 9mm pistol made by Daewoo lol
Guerrilla Gaming no way. Lol that’s nuts
Bobby G. That's what I said when I got it lmao
That seat trick blew my mind!
I replayed it.
I'm surprised the dudes in a foreign country knows better about Korean automobile manufacturers than any other local Koreans
Marc Scordato obvious Diamante parts-bin taillights...
In addition to all that they didn't focus on there car production and started making pencils and correctors (white outs) for pens and the're latest version of the lancer evolution which was made in 2015/2016 which was primarily titled as a sports sedan had no screen no automatic cargo door no heated seats and the black plastic piece that goes around fell off and the ac took 15mins to work in conclusion automakers like kia, doge, jeep, fait,Nissan,Lexus,
GMC,Lincoln,Cadillac and much much much more that I can sit here all day and night naming automakers that are enjoying their lives
Mitsubishi died with the Evo.
Being that Mitsubishi teamed up with Hyundai it’s safe to say that the taillights are from a Diamanté
The rear heated seat at the front would be used to eat the seat before the passenger arrived, so it would be nice and warm when he seated.
Front Screen has less lag than 99% of modern cars LOL

Doug is the kind of guy who likes to travel in the trunk
Come on now Doug. The Driver "heated rear seat" button is for when the driver comes to pick up Mr. Businessman from the airport, making sure the rear seat is already warm when he gets inside.
i think its to keep food warm if the guy orders cary out and the driver is sent to pick it up
Exactly! Im glad some one else understands this awesome feature!
wouldn't it also make it feel like you just sat on a seat someone tooted on? like that uncomfortable warm feeling of a toilet seat
Stephen Greer Sometimes on a particularly cold day a warm toilet seat is preferable to sitting on a super cold one.
Yes Doug frequently seems to lack common sense when it comes to various car features. He has lived a sheltered life.
"S. FLD"
"Sound Field".
