Question: Why does John call the commandments not grievous in 1 John 5? My understanding is the commandments were called a burden in other places but John says they aren’t
In Acts 15, they call the law a burden because they are talking about sacrificial law like stoning people and sacrificing animals and circumcision. That's the stuff their fathers couldn't bear. But stuff like keeping the Sabbath (a day for man - Mark 2:27) and eating clean (something Peter was able to do - Acts 10:14) are not burdens, they are good for us to keep. You have to rightly divide the Word and understand which commandments are part of the covenants and which are part of the law that was added because of transgressions.
