Because the movies came out long before Bobby did in the comics. Mystique has never been depicted as being bisexual in any of the movies, and in the last two, she was in implied to be in a relationship with Beast. Despite that, she’s openly bisexual in the comics and married to her lover, Destiny. The movies and the comics are separate things
@@thatoneguywho3434 I know. Jean using her powers to out him and her proceeding to him what his Own sexuality is was absolutely terrible. His coming out should have been much better and with care
0:41 The way he's drawn here just screams "conservative dad who hates his kids"! 3:12 I saw TV movie about two girls who were allergic to light and the townspeople called them vampires and attacked them and their family and this happened in the early 90s.
Bobby isn't gay. He spent years trying to get with Firestar in competition with Spider-Man. Marvel should have created a new character instead of messing up the IG Iceman.
I agree, but I have two questions: How _would_ they theoretically "walk back" this particular retcon? How would so many of his newer fans who glomed onto Bobby mostly because of him being gay(I've personally met a few fans like this)? Seeing as he now represents that group of individuals.
@@brunop299 That's a possibility, but many of the writers, potentially the editors in chiefs as well as some of the more recent fans, would probably rail against Bobby, not kissing another guy or constantly affirming his homosexuality every other issue or something. A 'burden' that most straight characters don't really deal with on a regular basis. These "fans" would probably complain if he had a relationship with another biologically legitimate female character.
I don't recall any of those jokes seeing as he was with several women and *genuinely in love with* at least one of them. Hell I only really recall any after the Singer-Men movies. And I don't really like the idea that getting tied up with that nonce is the origin of the retcons.
I never liked the retcon personally. Not cause of any problem with a character being gay. More just how forced in it felt. Came off as if the writers or some corporate committee went "we gotta have a gay character here" and in turn fundamentally clouslded his character history as a result. Either that or they secretly meant for it to come off as Jean psychically changing Bobby for some reason. Would've made more sense for them to at least say he was Bi instead of gay. Probably would've still seemed forced but not nearly as much and wouldn't have invalidated investment in past relationships of the character that fans had .
In morrison's run where they first made him bi wasn't it a reference to the actor's alleged gay ties to Singer(You know, the pedophile director) and how singer had his parents do the whole thing. Then Bendis did the Jean thing which was just disgusting on top.
Same. I didnt like what young Jean did and I also dont agree with the theory that someone who has flings is closeted or the false logic that most closeted gay people come out later therefore Bobby must be gay because it can be applied to anyone straight. Not against gay characters but I need stronger evidence because it undermines all his past relationship and his identity as a straight character. If he started as a gay character would it be acceptable to turn him straight? He dated an alien that switched genders and was uncomfortable by it, he must be gay. He brought Rogue to dinnre with his overly conservative and bigoted dad, he must be gay. Not all his relationships where flings and for a closeted gay man he showed a lot of emotion towards the women he's dated. Polaris, Darkstar etc. So if anything being bi makes more sense.
Actually what bugs me is the concept that he was closeted all this time implying his hetero life and feelings wasnt real. I think had they written it as him discovering new feelings and evolving them from there I would be ok with this change. This would still make him bi though.
Good video although I feel you missed some really strong storylines but made sure to focus a good amount on one of the worst witch was Jean Grey outing him as gay. It was very poorly executed. Looking at his track record with women him coming to the realization later on in life makes a lot more sense than he's always been gay and always knew it. We have literally been reading his thought bubbles for decades. Hell maybe he was just questioning his sexuality is a young man and she pushed him into something he later in life comes to grips with. Overall a good video I'm just pointing out crappy writing for that particular time.
All good and fine. Now could someone explain how, 30 years after joining the X Men, he was the only one not old enough to drink at Scott's bachelor party?
Everyone who knows about Bobby's homosexuality: Wasn't it just some sort of gag with the mutant Northstar? This video: Explains everything and turns out Northstar was so unimportant it wasn't even a footnote!
So this “Cloud” character is a gender-fluid being of pure stardust? Bobby, my guy, repression or no, how do you turn that down? That’s like the diamond-studded platinum medal of datefreinds!
Iceman used to be an amazing character, much like nearly every DC/Marvel character though he has been destroyed by a litany of despicable leftists pushing "The Message." It is truly sad those people have nothing but destruction and hatred inside them and not an ounce of good or creativity. DC and Marvel have been dead for years now thanks to them. Truly a sad end to once great companies full of truly wonderful and talented people. Thankfully all the good writers/artists started their own "indy" comics and are outselling the big two and making more than they ever did before these dark times.
Which animated movie or TV Show do you think did a great job in portraying Iceman? What do you think he would be like if he appeared in the MCU? Which actor do you think should play him?
Best one was X-Men: Evolution's Bobby. He was just mischievous enough and cocky enough while also being a tertiary character. SMAHAF had Bobby often be the butt of everyone's jokes. And he was pretty stiff. "Wolverine & The X-Men" had almost the same problem. He was played more as the dope rather than genuine prankster. And, in the movies, he was way more responsible, made the counteract Pyro. As for who should play him in the MCU, if he were still alive, I would 100% vote for Cameron Boyce! He had that Bobby Drake energy. So, without him.... it's a bit more difficult. I wouldn't want any of the "Stranger Things" kids because they're too big. I dunno maybe someone like Jake Short from "A.N.T. Farm." Though, his style is a bit more nervous and less flashy, but he could grow into the role. Possibly.
you know. as a queer person, bobby's sudden gayness made no since until i found out the only reason was to piss off ike purlmutter. LONG LIVE GAY ICEMAN!
Well if u remember chuck Austin’s X-men (I totally understand if you don’t) from around 2003-2004 it’s implied Bobby might be gay so I’m not sure if it was intentional but it wasn’t really out of nowhere. It definitely would of been worse if they turned any of the other OG X-men gay cause they’ve all had long running romances with important female characters. The only character I can think of Bobby having anything with was Polaris but I’m pretty sure modern writers have forgotten this. Edit: actually Beast toyed with being gay in the Morrison run now that I think about it, but that didn’t last.
Makes sense now, Purlmutter was the head of the Creative Comity for the MCU that kept Keven Figie (sp?) in check up to End Game, so 90’s Sitcom gay stereotype Iceman fits in perfectly with the modern MCU that nobody cares about or watches
Who do you think is the best girl who Bobby dated before he accepted the fact that he was gay? Who was his first gay relationship with anyway, is he like Hulking and Wiccan? Can you do history of Hulking?
Can you do history of the Living_Brain, the Elementals, Cyclone, Hydro Man, Molten Man, the Spot, Sandman, Rom_the_Spaceknight, Stingray, Quasar, Starbrand, Nightmask, Ava Ayala the White Tiger, Crossfire, Living Laser, Century, Lore and Technovore?
That’s the problem with sliding timescales, for both Marvel and DC, when it comes to things like these. Batwoman, Kathy Kane, was expelled from West Point because she was lesbian and refused to disclose who she was fraternizing with. She was created in 2006 with said rule being abolished later in 2011. That’s fine at the time but as time moves forward as well as the present day and relative past being pulled forward, it would be odd now when that bit backstory is shifted forward to the late 2010s. Same with another gay DC character, Metropolis Detective Maggie Sawyer. She was in her 30s when she was outed as gay in ‘87 with an angst-filled failed marriage and her daughter was given custody to her ex-husband. But time moved forward again and the timeline also shifted forward and in 2012, she references being out her entire life, making the backstory of her hiding in hetero marraige out of place. This causes hiccups in character backstories orginally tied to a certain aspect of society only for social change to happen later.
@@foldabotZ Yeah, although in their cases, they were gay pretty much from the start of their characters, so their story was constructed with that understanding the entire time. In Bobby's case, he wasn't converted gay until 2015, so everything prior to that was invented after that and projected backwards into prior events.
Can you do history of Ironheart, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Arno_Stark Iron Man, Squirrel_Girl, Constrictor, Deathlok, Amadeus_Cho, the Griever, Pepper Potts AKA Rescue and the Agents of Atlas along with Crescent, Morgan_Le_Fey, White Fox and Luna Snow?
I forgot that they ruined Iceman story by making him gay for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I was excited to watch this video and was like damn I don't really fuck with Iceman like that no more when he used to be one of my favorite X-Man characters. Then once I got halfway through the video I remembered why I don't fuck with Iceman no more. 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽
In the early 80's the cartoon Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends he dated women. In comics they didn't always focus on relationships instead focus on the stories. Smdh! Agenda pushing folks this why I can't stand comics because of this mess. Give me back comics when it wasn't so called " WOKE ".
@@raikagekamikaze pretty left leaning myself but I don’t like character pandering like that either. Changing up a race for separate content like movies and other universes is fine and even making him gay in those same other sources is fine. But making them different from who they originally were in the original stories feels like needless lazy pandering. However, I’m still open to whatever changes a story makes so long as the story is good or within valid reason. Try not to lean to hard into buzzwords like “woke” these days. It’s basically a blanket term recently.
@@comicbookking3446 I was introduced to Iceman through Spidey and his Amazing Friends, the original X-Men comics, Champions, and Defenders, where he could encase himself in icy armor, project ice blasts and small projectiles, and travel by making slides. In 1987, Simonson had Loki "unlock" his potential, then later, I think Emma Frost did something similar. Basically, Iceman went from a mutant with an exceptional ability to a near-cosmic level elemental. As a kid, I always liked Marvel characters, because they had more defined limits than DC characters. It made them more relatable. DC had Superman, who could move planets and such. The original X-Men, had similar abilities as him (flight, laser vision, strength, cold) divided among multiple teenagers, but none of them could take on a supervillain alone. They were vulnerable, "everymen" who had one special talent, which made their courage significant and interesting. I loved seeing them develop from students to proficient characters, until each one became god-like in some way.

Ffs this is the cringiest comment on here, ffs get over yourself, you are not a victim.
Bobby isn't gay. He spent years trying to get with Firestar in competition with Spider-Man. Marvel should have created a new character instead of messing up the IG Iceman.
That is actually somewhat common for gay people, especially those who belong to religious groups who are anti-gay.
Fr, even in the X-Men movies and cartoons, Bobby's either strongly romantically linked with Rogue, Kitty Pryde, or even Polaris.
I agree, but I have two questions: How _would_ they theoretically "walk back" this particular retcon? How would so many of his newer fans who glomed onto Bobby mostly because of him being gay(I've personally met a few fans like this)? Seeing as he now represents that group of individuals.
@@DaidriveCJ he could just be bi? i dont see why they made him specifically gay seeing as he has been with a bunch of girls
I'd like to see episodes on Banshee and Hank McCoy aka the Beast.
Could you do a video on Jack Munro/Nomad?

People when Iceman actually comes out as gay: 😡😡😡

@@LunaticReason Right? It feels like a fanfiction-eque leap in logic
So, no Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends reference?
you should do the authority
All good and fine. Now could someone explain how, 30 years after joining the X Men, he was the only one not old enough to drink at Scott's bachelor party?
Everyone who knows about Bobby's homosexuality: Wasn't it just some sort of gag with the mutant Northstar?
This video: Explains everything and turns out Northstar was so unimportant it wasn't even a footnote!
Bobby isn't gay, he just sells propane!
I'm not feeling the LGBTQ BS, either.

Iceman used to be an amazing character, much like nearly every DC/Marvel character though he has been destroyed by a litany of despicable leftists pushing "The Message."
It is truly sad those people have nothing but destruction and hatred inside them and not an ounce of good or creativity. DC and Marvel have been dead for years now thanks to them. Truly a sad end to once great companies full of truly wonderful and talented people. Thankfully all the good writers/artists started their own "indy" comics and are outselling the big two and making more than they ever did before these dark times.
Iceman, Spider-man, and Human Torch were always like frat buddies always trying to get the girls. Dudes not gay.

Possibly.
Gay iceman was the worst x-men retcon
you know. as a queer person, bobby's sudden gayness made no since until i found out the only reason was to piss off ike purlmutter.
Lol, "more accepting than in the time that they came from. . ." 2004 or so. :D

Then once I got halfway through the video I remembered why I don't fuck with Iceman no more. 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽
Iceman was never gay
In Fox's X-Men movies, he was dating both Rogue and Shadowcat
In the early 80's the cartoon Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends he dated women. In comics they didn't always focus on relationships instead focus on the stories. Smdh! Agenda pushing folks this why I can't stand comics because of this mess. Give me back comics when it wasn't so called " WOKE ".
@RAIKAGE KAMIKAZE what are you talking about 💯💯💯
@@raikagekamikaze pretty left leaning myself but I don’t like character pandering like that either.

By overpowering him and retconning his character, Marvel ruined one of my favorite characters.
What was wrong with overpowering Iceman ?
