Batman is only 'prep dependent' versus characters that massively overpower him. Against 99% of the villains he fights, his skill and intellect are enough. And even against most mid level threats(and a good bit of upper tiers) His skill and intellect plus the gadgets regularly in his belt can see him through. He does not have to devise some grandiose plan to stop Joker, Riddler, LoS ninjas, Killer Croc, Clayface, most other peak human martial artists, etc etc.
But that's because Batman already knows all those villains, but when he meets a new one most of the time have troubles defeating them. Just like Bane broke his back on their first fight.
