Owner of 81 300d and a 84 300TD both family owned. My wife’s father drives a 92 240dl and a 89 Saab 900s. Lol. We been best friends and rivals since she introduced me to her parents when we started dating.
I recently purchased a 1982 300TD wagon, it’s in kind of rough shape now but keeps up in traffic and I really enjoy daily driving it. I used to have the 4 cylinder Mercedes 240d which is unfortunately too slow to be comfortable in traffic with modern cars, but I love the W123!
Mine 1997 Volvo 960 Mk.II (Last Real Volvo, last RWD Classic Brick Volvo) have 455,000 Kilometers on it / ~285,000 Miles on it and it is still going perfectly! Such a good period of automotive engineering before some incidents in automotive industry in yearly 2000s, golden old era ❤👌😎.
Two of the greatest cars from a bygone era, when luxury meant excellent build quality. Sadly, features and tech are now the standard that cars are measured against each other with.
…letting the MBZ go for reasons as smart and practical as yours is quite admirable. I on the other hand am never letting them go. Got ‘em both, but mine are wagons, 1990 240 DL with 53K miles and a 1985 MBZ 300 TD Turbo with 74K miles. Both weee given to me, the Volvo from my Great Aunt in 1996 and the MBZ from my Grandmother her sister in 1990.
I love Volvo 240s, but man, the interiors do not age near as well as W123s. The plastics in particular in the Volvos just crumble over time. And after working on many of both, I think I prefer W123s. Maybe I'm biased after owning one...
on my search for a box car type like this i test drove a volvo 240 and i absolutely loved it. then i came across a w123 and test drove it and i absolutely loved it entirely front and back and everything about it. that was 6 years ago and now i finally own one. i had the chance to buy a 240 but i waited for the w123
certainly I am a 240 guy. I have a 1989 model and a 1992 model. Although I like the old 123 Mercedes. I would like to get an old diesel W123 model as well (preferably a 240D), but just like the Volvo 240, they have gone up in price, but to a much greater extent.
My two cars (over 30 years) have been a Volvo Amazon and a W123. Much more of a difference but both super-strong reliable cars. This was such a fun video, thanks.
I love them both so much. The W123 has a better interior but the Volvo is super comfortable still. However between the two the Mercedes is better looking but the 242 GT is badass. Honestly take your pick these are the two best cars ever made ever.
Those are two great car. Once I ownd 960 n C230 at the same periode. Absolutely very very nice cars. I owned them them for 17years. Love Volvo n Mercedes...Very nice couple of car,bro...👍👍👍
I love both cars. I have a 240 and my uncle (RIP) had a 300 Turbo Diesel. Both cars are still ubiquitous in the real world and in the Minecraft universe.
Great comparison video! Having owned a lot of e28s that were thought to be plentiful, I sold all of mine (one was an m5) and regretted it thinking another would come along at a great price (I was wrong about that). So, if your having doubts about the w123, keep it. I’ve been looking for w123s and e28s for the last 3-4 years and haven’t found one that checks the boxes and is reasonably priced (but I live in SoCal which means prices are higher). Again, great comparison video!
I've been driving these Volvos for longer than you've been alive and the one thing that I have never much liked is their width. I have always wished that they were 2" or 3" wider. For their length and height they look disproportionately narrow. An additional 2" or 3" would have helped with their appearance as well as created a larger cabin, engine compartment, trunk and also helped with the handling - a wider stance. As well, the front footwells would have been a little wider. I have always found the pedals a little too close together and offset from the driver's seat. I think the Mercedes is a much more pleasing car to the eye just because of it's wider body. It's height, length and width are much more in balance.
I have both cars, identical to the video except my 1992 Volvo 240 and 1983 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesels both have tan interiors (Volvo cloth, Mercedes leather). Both cars are like-new and fabulous. The Volvo just turned 100,000 original miles, and the Mercedes has 44,500 original miles and is like it was just driven off of the sales lot brand new. I am not selling either. :)
I love them both , the sight lines are a dream in both but they will cost you a bit to get up and running if you go for a good deal on purchase price .If your a diy mechanic ? and have some change ... go for it . the 240n looks better without the black tape window bottom line .center beam painted same as car color ups the look as well .
I sold my 4-speed manual, euro-spec '84 240d, and bought a 5-speed manual '90 volvo 240dl wagon. The Benz 240d was just too slow for safety (even with manual trans, the valves adjusted and all filters changed), but would have kept it if it was a manual 300d. The volvo 240 wagon is a great replacement, especially being manual and a wagon; w123 wagons are getting too expensive for my toy budget. The volvo isn't quite the same experience to drive as the w123 is, but the is a fantastic summer daily, has much better seats, and is growing on my quickly.
They're both very good and very safe cars! I happen to have both and drive them. The 300D turbo Mercedes 1984 is more comfortable to drive and no smog test required. The 240 Volvo '93 is a faster car. But I drive the Mercedes 300D more than the 240 Volvo. These 2 cars can outlast any newer car because with the newer cars manufacturers factored in obsolescence. They're both easy to maintain and even to fix yourself. I will encourage anybody to buy them if given the chance. I owned a 1987 240DL which had a mileage of 435K miles before I sold it.
I have both. No comparison here. This Benz is a Tank. And I have seen them in a crash , the Volvo got destroyed. If you are a reasonably big person , you will find the doors of the Volvo too small . But the Volvo is faster period
Volvo is better. Not rusting too much, parts are more cheap, more available. In plus heated seats - not each car manufactured today does having it onboard!
The Volvo wagon has far more storage capacity than the MB wagon (41 cu ft vs 31 cu ft) , the turning circle is much smaller (32 ft vs 37 ft), and has a much better road crash safety record. Also cheaper parts.
Been excited for this, can almost mistake them from a distance. Couple of great old tanks.

A review I was looking to since ever ! Awesome job ! The Merc was ahead of its time, design wise and technical wise.
240 wins. Design is subjective. Technical? Redblocks have the world record of km made without majour repairs.

I've been daily driving a 91 240 wagon for over five years with very few issues.

Glad you liked it!
I like to roof racks you put I the 240. Where can I get those? I have a 1992 240. It's really grown on me.
Amazon
Those old Mercedes diesels are appreciating in value. I have seen some crazy sales prices in the last couple of years for some 80's cars
I love them both so much. The W123 has a better interior but the Volvo is super comfortable still. However between the two the Mercedes is better looking but the 242 GT is badass. Honestly take your pick these are the two best cars ever made ever.
Never realized they both have that high up rubber beltline.

Awesome cars! I remember these two cars from when I was a boy in the 1980s. It's impossible for me to choose a favourite of the two cars. 🙂
Great comparison video!

Agreed. Very narrow track.
Two classic Titans of Richmond's west end set. The purr of Mercedes diesel is as pleasing to the ear as a Harley Davidson Shovelhead.
slightly older Mercedes W114/115 though is also a sick brick with Volvo brick lines
No comparison, VOLVO!
Same thought. Volvo 240 for life.
Volvo all day

Volvo 240 Started in 75 , thx for your vid…i own both, lucky!

i will drive the mercedes til the tires fall off.
Great video, but I chuckle when you mention the word aerodynamic in Volvo 240 in the same breath.
I’d love to see a video where you talk about all of the cars you’ve owned
Howdy, I have a couple of these videos already. check out the rest of my videos.

Did you sell the W123?
Yes.
They don't make cars like these anymore
I am on the market for a 300d! How soon are you looking to sell it?
Not really in a rush, but its on the to-do list.
The irony is that both brands are known for their unreliability nowaday.
Hi what's the price on the 300
Sold

Ahahah
240 wins by a small margin

All the fixes you can do on your own.

if you want diesel it is mercedes if you want petrol get the volvo
Well put
Volvo for life!
I have a 1988 volvo 245 wagon polished black 159,000 miles I want to trade for a black w123.
Volvo please
